Garbage greets visitors to this park in Anna Nagar

By N Rathi Chithra

The sight of piled up garbage greets visitors to a park main-tained by the Greater Chennai Corporation in I Block in 38th Street in Anna Nagar West. The park is used by people living in the 38th, 39th, 40th Street in I Block and others living in and around the vicinity on a regular basis for their early morning as

well as evening walks. The locality does not have

many parks and this is one open space where people come to in the hope of refreshing their minds and rejuvenating their bodies through regular walks and exercises. Some come just to sit on the benches in the park and chat for long hours as there is no other place in the immedi-ate vicinity where one could go

to chat in peace. However, right at the en-

trance of the park one can find a heap of garbage piled along-side the compound close to the main gate of the green lung space. “Isn’t this sight one of life’s many instant ironies,” asks Gomathi Ammal, an elderly resident of the locality. “You see, this park belongs to the Greater Chennai Corporation.

It is this very civic body that is responsible for the upkeep of the public infrastructure and roads. Clearance of garbage on a regu-lar basis is a task that has to be undertaken by this same civic agency. And here you are enter-ing a public facility maintained by the Corporation where gar-bage has piled up,” she adds in exasperation as if giving a vol-untary explanation.

Local residents, especially the elderly citizens, are clearly put off by the sight of the gar-bage mound near the park en-trance. “Why do we come to the park in the first place? We come here only to breathe fresh air and look at the greenery and relax our minds. But when the first thing that hits you when you are about to enter the park is this heap of garbage. Wouldn’t this put you off ? Why doesn’t the Greater Chennai Corporation understand that it has to keep not just the park but its surroundings clean so that elderly people like us could come here without any inhibi-tions,” asked Ananthakadak-sham, another senior citizen of the neighbourhood.

The following are some of the decisions taken at the gen-eral body meeting of Mogap-pair Eri Scheme House Own-ers’ Association according to Mr A Selvaraj, Secretary of the association.

u The Storm Water Drain Department of Greater Chen-nai Corporation has been asked to expedite the completion of the Storm Water Canal Project in Eri Scheme and to prevent the sewerage water mixing in this new canal construction.

u To complete the laying of Roads in Eri Scheme without any further delay.

u To remove any form of garbage dumping in the residen-tial area.

u City Traffic Police to re-move the abandoned vehicles in and around Eri scheme.

u Greater Chennai Corpora-tion to completely eradicate the Street Dogs menace and save both the children and the aged.

u TANGEDCO to look into the matter of Power Fluctua-tions posing damage to electri-cal appliances at homes.

Four new executive commit-tee members added to the as-sociation are S. Mohanasunda-ram, M.A.Sakthivel, V.Ramesh and H.Rajaraman.

Eri Scheme house owners’ meet

Parking only through Metro travel cards now

Starting this August, Metro Rail com-muters in Chennai will have to make only digital payments to park their vehicles at the stations. Chennai Metro Rail Lim-ited (CMRL) will accept transaction only through travel smart cards from August. Commuters who are using parking

spaces and who do not possess CMRL travel cards can buy and top up at cus-tomer care/ ticketing counters available at the metro stations.

Interim order passedBased on the PIL filed in the Madras

High Court by Anna Nagar Western Extension Association, the Hon’ble court has pronounced an interim order dated

22-7-2019.“Member’s of the petitioner’s Associa-

tion are directed to deposit 50% of the revised property tax within a period of four weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of this order, failing which it is made clear that the order of interim stay grant-ed will be vacated, without reference to further orders from the court.” Next hear-ing will be on 19.8.2019, according to Mr P Vadivel, secretary of the association.

Anna Nagar Police Raise Awareness on App

By Our Correspondent

The K4 Anna Nagar Police Station has put up flex boards at several key spots in its jurisdiction in the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood to raise aware-ness among members of the public about the newly launched ‘Kavalan’ mobile application (App) and im-portant phone numbers to be dialled during an emer-gency. The flex boards have come up at different loca-tions including the Blue Star junction and Sixth Avenue Junction in Anna Nagar.

The contents of the notice boards are also in Tamil, which is under-stood by a wide section of the resident of the vast bustling neighbourhood of Anna Nagar. According to police personnel working at the K4 Anna Nagar Police Station the flex boards have been installed for the benefit of the pub-

lic as many of them were not aware as to how to contact the police in case of need. “The Kavalan is an App launched for the protection of the people. This can be downloaded on the PlayStore in the android phones and the iStore in the Apple iPhone. It is enough if people seek-ing emergency attention merely press the SOS but-ton in the Kavalan App. The moment they press it through GPS tracking we will be able to identify the location from which the SOS button was pressed. There is also a facility to immediately call back the dialler and real time track-ing of the call,” the police officer explained.

“But many of them are unaware of the Kavalan App and its features. That is why we decided to in-crease the awareness about it among the people living in the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood by placing these

flex boards at important locations. We have received a good response from the public following this,” he added. The officer, how-ever, did not wish to be named for this report. The App will be particularly useful for women and se-nior citizens, he added.

The flex boards also have information about important phone numbers that people need to dial in case of an emergency where then need the ser-vices of the law and order enforcers. The people can dial 100 or 112 for emer-gency from their phones. “If someone wishes to lodge a complaint via Short Messaging Service (SMS) then they can send it to the number 79977-00100. This number is also the What-sApp number to reach us easily,” he added. Like-wise, the police could be found on social media on the Twitter handle @tnp-dial100, he said.

W h i l e d o c t o r s know that diabetes raises the risk of heart failure, a global study of 12 million people has found that this risk is greater for women than men.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), cur-rently 415 million adults world-wide live with diabetes - with approximately 199 million of them being women.

In India, which is often called the diabe-tes capital of the world, there were over 72 million cases of diabetes in 2017 - which means about 8.8 per cent of the country’s adult popu-lation had the disease.

While Type-1 dia-betes is associated with a 47 per cent ex-cess risk of heart fail-ure in women com-pared to men, Type-2 diabetes has a nine per cent higher excess risk of heart failure for women than men, says a study.

There are a number of reasons why wom-en with diabetes are at greater risk of heart complications.

Women were re-

ported to have two years’ longer duration of pre-diabetes than men and this increased duration may be as-sociated with greater excess risk of heart failure in women.

Some major con-cerns are that women are also being under treated for diabetes, are not taking the same levels of medica-tions as men and are less likely to receive intensive care.

The IDF reports that girls and women with diabetes experi-ence a range of chal-lenges. Gender roles, power imbalances, socioeconomic in-equalities resulting in poor diet and lack of physical activity can all influence vulnera-bility to diabetes.

The IDF expects by the year 2040 around 313 million women will be suffering from the disease.

Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women and claims 2.1 million fe-male lives every year, more so than men. The number one lead-ing cause of death for women is heart dis-ease.

Helming a true incident which sent the shivers down the spine of the countless turned out to be a keepsake experience for director SD Ramesh Selvan. No stranger to bring out the true happenings, like the Dharma-puri bus horror in Kalavaram, the director said he was more than happy to walk the extra mile to ensure that the facts were not disrupted and the narration stayed in the minds of the audience.

Overcoming a legal issue when a political party brought to light the non-existent caste issues resulting in him scurry for cover in Bengaluru and then reasoning with the censors, Selvan said he was emboldened by the support of the social media. “That kept me thinking that come what may, the movie has

to see the light of the day. Well, it has happened now after a team of cyber crime officials had a view of the content and flashed the green signal. There was no problem with the censors, only that the team felt the actual happening and the way it had been presented merited a U/A

verdict. Shooting at live spots near the hustle and bustle Nungambakkam was a challenge relished by the ex-tended crew. “The appalling truth of the victim hacked to death on a busy morning at the railway station and lay unattended for well over three hours spoke of the callous attitude of the police force. They tried to pass it on to the railway police when the victim needed urgent medical atten-tion. More than the gruesome mur-der, the attitude of the ones which mattered in the happening, left a bitter taste.”

Selvan said that the heroic efforts of the cop entrusted with the job of finding the murderer has got the space it deserved (Ajmal plays the investigatiing officer). “I have nar-rated the story from the eyes of the cop who forms a team to trace down the killer. When the team zeroes in on an engineering student, he tries to slit his throat. But the officer prevents

that and after collecting the facts he is set to reveal that to the public when the prison officials reveal that the suspect had bit a live

wire to end his life. So much of effort put in by the investigating team coming to nought was a hard pill to swallow. The facts were that it was an one-sided love and the girl was actually in love with another man.”

Not allowing the temptations doors to add a sprinke of imagina-tion, Selvan said that many were aware that he had started penning the script even before the accused was nabbed. “You could say I had an earlier start in a marathon race where I gathered stark facts from the near and dear ones of Swathi and Ram-kumar. The high point was in the interaction with police officials who had investigated the proceedings which went a long way in spelling out a few undisclosed facts which the audience may not have had a clue.”

Director Sundar C, known for his commer-cial and entertaining screenplay writing in Tamil cinema is ready to give another power-packed performance in his upcoming film ‘Iruttu’.

Durai VZ Known for his multiple genre films such as Ajith Kumar’s ‘Mugavari’, Vikram’s ‘Kadhal Sadukudukudu’, Simbu’s ‘Thotti Jaya’, B h a r a t h ’s ‘ N e p a l i ’ , Shaam’s ‘6’ and Samu-drakani’s ‘Yemaali’ is helming the film.

The film’s produced by l ead ing d i s t r i bu to r

‘Screen Scene Media En-tertainment’ who distrib-uted films such as Sanda-kozhi 2, Thadam, Neeya 2, Kalavaani 2, Kazhugu 2 and Kennedy Club. The company is also produc-ing three more films in which Jayam Ravi will play the lead. Horror films were based on Hin-du and Christian tradi-tions in Tamil cinema. There have never been more films with Islamic traditions. Thus, ‘Iruttu’ is a film based on Islamic traditions.

The film has wrapped up its shoot in Surat and

Ooty. It is a known fact that Sunder C has previ-ously directed and acted in horror films.

Actress Sakshi Chow-dhery, who debuted in Kollywood with the ‘Aay-irathil Iruvar’ is playing the female lead in this film. Sai Dhanshika, VTV Ga-nesh, Yogibabu, Vimala Raman, Shaji Sen, Raja S i m m a n a n d B a b y Manasvi play important roles. ‘Marina’ fame Girish Gopalakrishnan is on board for his music, Sudarshan for cinematog-raphy and editing is being handled by Krishnasamy.

Aishwaryaa Dhanush, who directed ‘3’ and ‘Vai Raja Vai’, has now donned the Hat of an investor. She is cur-rently investing on Sarva Yoga, which was started in 2016. The founders of this company are Sarvesh Shashi and Actress Malaika Arora. The company offers viewers and clients the benefits of yoga through digital and live plat-forms. Sarva has been financed by many Bollywood celebrities, including Malaika Arora, Shahid Kapoor and Pop Star Jennifer Lopez.

The company has received a total investment of Rs. 34.47 crores through global investment. The number of Sarva studios in India is expected to touch 100 next month. Sarva plans to set up 500 studios in partnership with Oyo by 2022.

Speaking of Sarva and Diva Yoga, Aishwarya R Dha-nush said, “Sarva will help increase operations in South India. In this modern way of life, we struggle daily with depression, anxiety, insomnia, and obesity. I have been looking at Malaika and Sarvesh’s, Sarva and Diva Yoga. It is amazing how our thinking processes align with ev-erything related to health. I am happy to work with both of them and hope that Sarva and Diva Yoga will increase in South India through this partnership. Sarva’s goal is to remind the world about the importance of mindfulness and holistic health, which is why I invested in it.”

The company plans to reach 10 crore people in the next five years. Sarva is to open 100 studios in India within the next month. The company conducts over 3500+ classes a week with 18,000 members per day. Sarva’s Diva Yoga Studio - an exclusive yoga center for women - is set to open in Chennai in the next two months.

With the Greater Chennai Cor-poration re-

cently launching the 'Con-certs at the Park' concept at the Dr Visveswaraya Tow-er Park, known popularly in the neighbourhood and elsewhere as the Anna Nagar Tower Park, a cross-section of residents in the Mogappair East and West neighbourhood is demand-ing that the facility be ex-tended in their localities too.

Under the 'Concerts at the Park', the Greater Chennai Corporation has roped in professional and amateur artistes to perform concerts at the 42 big parks in the city including in the Anna Nagar Tower Park.

It has formed an advisory group with representatives from Kalakshetra Founda-tion, The Music Academy, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and other forums to fix slots for these concerts at the parks and finalising artistes who would per-form at those venues dur-ing weekends. Not just music concerts but also dance forms including folk a r t a n d t r a d i t i o n a l Bharatanatyam would be performed by the artistes in the open areas in the park under the scheme.

"We do not know if any of the parks maintained by the Greater Chennai Cor-poration in the neighbour-hoods of Mogappair East, Mogappair West and Nol-ambur figure in the list of 42 parks chosen by the

civic body to have these free weekend concerts. No list is available in public domain. But usually such musical and art events are confined to the Anna Nagar Tower Park," said Raveendranath, a resident of First Block in Mogap-pair East and a lover of music.

Seethalakshmi, a senior citizen, who regularly visits the Mangal Eri Park in Mogappair, says that such concerts should be held in the parks in the Mogappair neighbourhood also. "At the Mangal Eri Park we do have an elevated platform where music concerts could be held. I am sure it will draw a lot of music enthusiasts, especially when the event is held free. I hope that our park is in-

Mogappair Residents too Seek Concerts at Parkcluded in the list of 42 parks where concerts are to be held. If not, this should be included as we too love music," she said.

"The Mogappair neigh-bourhood should not be treated as a poor cousin of

Anna Nagar. Our area has grown in development and we have as many facilities here as in Anna Nagar. Therefore the authorities must hold such events in the many parks here also," she added.

Velammal Main School, Mogappair defeated Little Flower Matric. Hr. Sec. School, Porur 15-8, 15-10 in the final of the Sethu Baskara State Level throwball Tournament held

here on recently. The team took home Rs 15000 and trophy.
