The Greater Chennai Cor-poration has imposed restric-tions on parking of cars, two-wheelers and other vehicles alongside the EB Road Park on the Pari Salai end in Mogappair East.

The civic body has installed a board near the parking area stating that the zone is meant for the sole use of vehicles owned by park users and strictly not for others. “People other than those visiting the park should strictly not park their vehicles here. If found violating the vehicles would be handed over the police,” the notice board cautioned.

Inquiries with officials of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion and park users revealed that the action was taken after the parking zone was being utilised by random people to

park their vehicles, especially cars, vans and auto rickshaws overnight. This posed difficul-ties for park users as they were unable to find a spot nearby to park their two-wheelers and cars.

“We found that some call taxi drivers and even residents, who do not have parking spaces of their own, would park their vehicles outside the EB Road Park and leave them there overnight. Some of them would remove the vehicles only late in the morning. This affected the people who vis-ited the park regularly in the mornings as they did not have any parking space for their vehicles. In some cases, we found that the owners of the vehicles would not arrive even till late evening. That is why we tied a rope and in-stalled this board to caution them of action if they did not

comply with our warning,” said an official of the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Am-battur Division, requesting anonymity.

Regular visitors to the EB Road Park also said that in some cases, the owners who stationed their vehicles at the parking zone would not take them even for two days espe-cially during the weekend. This proved to be a menace to tackle following they ap-proached the civic agency to regulate parking in the vicinity.

“Now after seeing the no-tice board, not many venture to park their vehicles over-night at the spot. Instead they look for space in the bylanes to park their vehicles. This is a welcome change that we have noticed,” said Gopala-samy, a regular visitor to the park.

A cross-section of resi-dents belonging to the Di-vision 93 in Zone 7 of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion staged a peaceful dem-onstration recently de-manding revision of prop-erty tax rates in the neigh-bourhood of Mogappair East and its surroundings. Localities such as Pari Sa-lai, Ori Salai, EB Road, Padikuppam Road, Padi Pudu Nagar and Nerkun-dram fall under Division 93 of the Greater Chennai Corporation. Many resi-dents had in the recent past pointed out to serious anomalies in the revised property tax rates and the same was also highlighted in Mogappair Mail had in November last year high-lighted the same.

However, since the au-

thorities did not take any action on the plea for prop-erty tax revision, the resi-dents under the umbrella organisation Division 93 Federation of Welfare As-sociations staged a novel demonstration of sweeping the streets in Mogappair East to draw the attention of the authorities to their demand. The demonstra-tion was also supported by the Division 93 Traders’ Association and Auto Drivers’ Associations, ac-cording to a pamphlet is-sued by the protesting resi-dents. The residents alleged that the Greater Chennai Corporation had blindly undertaken an upwardly revision of property tax rates last year and is expect-ing residents to comply with the same. “In devel-oped localities like Anna Nagar, Adyar, T Nagar and

Kodambakkam, the Great-er Chennai Corporation has only fixed a revised property tax at the rate of Rs 1.40 per square feet. Whereas, in total contrast to this, for a locality like Mogappair, which has a mixed population drawn from various strata of soci-ety in terms of economic criteria, the authorities have fixed a much higher property tax at the rate of Rs 4 per square feet,” point-ed out Swamy, a resident of Mogappair East.

“This is completely un-justified and points to non-application of mind while undertaking the exercise of revision of property tax. Therefore, this tax slab needs to be scaled down and revised on a par with the posh localities such as Adyar, Anna Nagar and T Nagar,” he argued. Though there had been representa-tions to the authorities concerned to re-examine the tax, there has been no response. This prompted the residents to resort to the demonstration.

As many as six street dogs were allegedly poi-soned to death in S & P Garden’s Fourth Cross Street in Nolambur. They were killed late Thursday night and the residents came to know of it only on Friday morning. The car-casses have been removed without post-mortem though a complaint has been filed in the nearest Police Station. The dead animals were left scattered in different places and there were clear signs of poisoning.

There were no doubts about it as Biriyani kept in two places in that street had drastically changed colour.

“These dogs have been of great help to the community and it pains to think that they have been brutally killed. It is alleged that a strong poi-son has been mixed with Biriyani leading to the death of five dogs of the same street on the same day and one from the next street the follow-ing day”, said a dog lover from the colony who had been feeding them for years.

“The dogs were sterilised and anti virus injection administered. They were harmless and of great help to the residents. Outsiders were not allowed to have a free run”, he added. “In a gated community as such, there is every possibility of a few disliking the move of encourag-ing stray dogs. Though no one has the right to kill animals, efforts could have been taken to hand them over to the Blue Cross. Sad to say that a full street has been wiped off of no dogs in a cruel manner”, he concluded.

Trying to set that right in his second venture ‘Kap-ilavasthu’ (which had a de-cent opening Friday) Mu-rali said the script is the plight of the illegitimate children thrown out by their parents and the sorry state of the country turning a Nelson’s eye. “I have brought to light the ser-vices rendered by scores of orphanages which could do with government sup-port to keep up the good work. There are Corpo-rates willing to lend a help-ing hand but are not sure if the funds go to the right

education for a better to-morrow.”

Earth Mounds Back near kavimani salai

P M Abishikha of Nol-ambur who had won a lot of laurels in swimming added one more to her kitty finishing second in the 200m free style event at the State Games for the Chief Minister's Trophy in Swimming, representing Thiruvallur district and conducted by the Sports Development Authority of

Tamil Nadu at the Velach-ery Aquatic Complex. Her timing was 2:25.74 secs.

Apart from the Trophy she was richer by Rs 75,000. She received the award from Mr K A Sen-gottaiyan, Minister for State Education. The Stingrays swimming poll in Nolambur is run by Abishikha's parents.

The T-Junction at the point where the Eri Scheme First Main Road meets Kavimani Salai – which leads to Mogappair West and Nolambur (via Eri Scheme Sixth Main Road) on either direction – has turned into an eyesore yet again with the sight of mounds of earth greeting everyone. More than a year ago – December 2017 to be precise – Mogappair Mail had highlighted with pho-tograph as to how the river bed near Kavimani Salai had turned into a dumping ground for debris. Follow-ing this some months later, the debris was removed and the earth levelled at the spot raising the hopes of local residents who were battling against such indis-criminate dumping of earth and debris.

However, cut to the present, the mounds of earth are back at the spot, much to the chagrin and disappointment of local residents. Residents said that the ongoing desilting and concretising exercise along the water bodies and f lood carriers in and

around the neighbourhood of Mogappair East and West has led to dumping of the desilted earth.

Local residents com-plained that the presence

of the earth mounds has encouraged some outsiders and even local people to discard garbage and debris along the roadside near the riverbed.
