Brookfield Knights presents ….. RUSSELL DECARLE with LAURA CORTESE & THE DANCE CARDS: At Traverse Theatre Bar, Edinburgh. Legendary Canadian artist Russell deCarle famously fronted iconic country roots band Prairie Oyster, racking up an impressive list of awards, gold and platinum selling records and No 1 singles. Bound together by a superlative level of playing and performance that is rare and precious, deCarle, Keldie and Briggs are as close to joined-at-the-hip perfection as you will ever encounter. The Boston-based fiddler/vocalist and song-writer Laura Cortese who digs deep and aims high, is one of the busiest on the circuit. But, it’s been as Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards that she has made the biggest impact, their elegant music schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music and backed by grooves that alternately inspire Cajun two-stepping and rock ‘n’ roll swagger. www.facebook.com/RusselldeCarle www.thisislauracortese.com www.brookfield-knights.com 27 APRIL

JD KELLEHER supporting BLAIR DUNLOP: At Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh. Singer, Songwriter and Actor JD Kelleher, who is known for his roles as Willie Pearse in TV mini-series 1916 The Forgotten Seven and Breandán Mac Gearailt in Irish soap Ros na Rún has previously been at the forefront of Ireland’s “Yes Vote” ahead of the Marriage Equality Referendum. Kelleher explains the rousing cover of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” aimed to “Raise awareness to the need for a positive vote for freedom”. Raise awareness it did, and contributed to a change in the Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland and the legalization of same sex marriage. www.facebook.com/JDKelleher008 Edinburgh Folk Club presents ….. DAVE NACHMANOFF: At Pleasance Theatre Bar, Doors/bar 7:30pm; showtime 8pm £10 (non-members) :: £9 (concession) £7 (EFC members) Tickets at the door. With his personable, lively stage presence, there always seems to be time for a fun gig and good story.Dave writes in styles ranging from folk to pop and now has ten albums to his name. The latest, Spinoza’s

Dream (to be released May 2016), combines thought-provoking tenets of philosophy (he has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of California) with his subtly elegant folk sensibility. www.facebook.com/davenach 28 APRIL Nothing Ever Happens Here presents ….. SHONEN KNIFE, TEEN CANTEEN + LEGGY: At Summerhall, Edinburgh. 8-Late. A series of gig nights based out of Edinburgh's Summerhall Arts Venue. www.Summerhall.co.uk Soundhouse presents ..... EWAN MCLENNAN and SKY SMEED: At The Pleasance, Edinburgh. 8pm. £8/£10. Ewan McLennan has, in a short space of time, become known as a guitarist at the forefront of his generation. A troubadour, balladeer and storyteller cut in the old style; a singer that can move audiences with his passion and pathos and a songwriter for whom social justice is still a burning issue. His first album, Rags and Robes, received critical acclaim, putting him firmly on the folk circuit and won him the prestigious Horizon Award at the BBC Folk Awards. U.S. Folksinger Sky Smeed was born and raised outside of Chanute, Kansas and the first music he ever heard came from Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Van Morrison and Merle Haggard. Hearing this roots style of music playing on an old record player has stayed with Sky and is evident when he takes the stage to share his effortless, country tinged tunes of working hard, dogs, love, money, beer, coffee, and the call of the road. Listeners often compare Sky to Gram Parsons, Neil Young and John Prine, though his easy-going demeanor, off-the-

cuff banter and transparency link him to contemporaries like Todd Snider and Paul Thorn. www.soundhouse.org.uk Film Hub Scotland presents CineScore Live: Lost Treasure with live soundtrack from Drew Wright and Hamish Brown at Filmhouse Cinema, Edinburgh, 6.30pm - Part of The Folk Film Gathering. Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network CineScore Live tour - a unique season of three spectacular silent films, each accompanied by a specially-commissioned score performed live by some of Scotland’s most talented musicians at venues across the country. SONGS OF SEPARATION: At Edinburgh Queens Hall (with young people’s workshop). Songs of separation is an outstanding collaboration

between ten of Scotland and England’s leading female folk musicians. ANIMA MUNDI: At Voodoo Rooms, 19A W Register St. Edinburgh EH2 2AA. Doors: 7pm. Tickets: £16.50 (adv). Box Office: 0131 556 7060. The Cuban prog five-piece Anima Mundi, being a unique band in its homeland, it is impossible to understand the evolution of the band without having an understanding of the Cuban situation. It is a known fact that the phenomenon of migration is suffered by nearly every family on the Island. Nine musicians from Anima Mundi have left and live in other countries, leaving holes in the line-up which are difficult to fill with talented performers. Also acquiring instruments and equipment isn’t straight forwards, with the lack of freedom of information. The indifference of the Cuban media to rock music, which has foreign influences, is thought of as having a lack of national identity. This is the first time that the Mundi’s have played in the UK, but they have played some hugely successful gigs and festivals in Europe, and thought it was about time that here in the UK we had a taste of their style of Progressive Rock. www.animamundimusic.com 26 MAY

Edinburgh Alt.Blues/Soul singer songwriter Hugh Kelly has recently released his debut EP which is getting numerous plays on radio stations throughout UK, and he was ‘Artist of the Week’ in the Scotland on Sunday & Scotsman and was interviewed live on BBC Radio Scotland’s Janice Forsyth Show with one of his tracks making her ‘Single of the Week’. Almost Blue Promotions Presents ….. DANIEL ROMANO with support KACY & CLAYTON: At The Tunnels, Aberdeen. Doors 7.00pm. Daniel Romano’s fifth LP “Mosey” will be released in late spring through New West Records. The upcoming album is named after how he describes his own music. “Mosey music is a study in contrasts. There’s glitz and grit, reveling and wallowing, wretchedness and showmanship. Mosey music’s pioneers wore their battered hearts on sequined sleeves. From Bakersfield to Galveston, the legends traded their tragicomic highs and lows for gold records and white Cadillacs. But that was then; the days of Buckaroos, Nudie Suits and various Hanks are over, save for the museum displays. To quote a George Jones title track, “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes?” On this tour Daniel Romano has invited Kacy & Clayton to open up for him and his band. A duo from the wood mountain uplands of Southern Saskatchewan that gently melts British and North American folk tradition together and create something timeless and captivating. www.AlmostBluePromotions.com THE SPRINGSTEEN SESSIONS: At The Lemon Tree, West North Street, Aberdeen, at 8pm. Formed in Glasgow in 2010, The Springsteen Sessions are an homage to the music of one of the most iconic performers of the last 40 years. Almost Blue Promotions presents ….. CAHALEN MORRIOSON & ELI WEST: At The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen. 8pm. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West are, simply put, two of the most innovative and subtle roots musicians today. Their music draws from old folk sources, but it sounds vibrantly alive. Cahalen Morrison writes songs that sound like a Cormac McCarthy novel: simple, beautifully crafted, and seemingly formed from raw natural elements. Eli West brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time, but refracted through a 21st century lens. www.almostbluepromotions.com

Doune & Dunblane Fling Dunblane 26-28 May Like many others, the Fling was conceived with the help of music and alcohol. It began as an idea at the Dunblane Folk Club, among a group of people fond of music and fun. And so in May 1993 the first Fling happened. Since then the Fling has gone from strength to strength. Some-where along the line the first 'Fling by the River' began. Held each Fling Saturday on Dunblane's historic Drying Green, its activities have ranged from an open stage for local young musicians, fire engines, space-hopper races and fire-eating jugglers, to the annual Rotary Club race for 4,000 plastic ducks down the Allan Water. Gradually a 'Fringe Fling' has developed, featur-ing over the years everything from ghost walks, pub quizzes, plays from the local Drama Group, master classes in everything from fiddling or mandolins to harmony singing or bodhran, and the now-annual Thursday Jazz Night. www.dunblanefling.com
