Queen's Hall, Edinburgh. www.breabach.com MEET MR CALLAGHAN: Live upstairs in the Fidders Elbow, 4 Picardy Place. Edinburgh. Time, 7pm. 8 JUNE VIVID VOICES: A celebration of the art of the singer-songwriter. Featuring Nick Harper, Carol Laula and Gavin Moore. Juniper Promotions have been bringing some of the best singer-songwriters to Edinburgh for over 15 years. However, all good things must come to an end and Juniper will shortly be going into ‘hibernation’. To mark this event, Vivid Voices is a celebration of the singer-songwriter, featuring some of the artists who have played under the Juniper banner. From chart toppers such as Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook and Colin Vearncombe to legends like Martin Stephenson and Allan Taylor, not forgetting rising young stars, which include Jon Gomm and Martha Tilson, Juniper has seen some of the best of the genre. However, for this special event, we have chosen three artists who epitomise the exceptional talent, hard work and all-round humanity of the singer-songwriter: Voodoo Rooms. West Register Street, Edinburgh. Doors open 7pm. Tickets: advance £12, at door £15. Tickets also from Tickets Scotland, Rose Street, Edinburgh Tel: 0131 220 3234. 11 JUNE KING EIDER - Single launch: Edinburgh-based folk-blues band King Eider are a talented five-piece who create a modern acoustic sound using traditional musicianship. From the loud to the soft, the haunting to the upbeat, the harmonic strength of this band lies in their unique mix of three-part harmonies, acoustic guitar, bass, drums and classical strings. The Ballroom, Voodoo Rooms 19a West Register Street, Edinburgh, Admission £5. From 7pm Over 18 only RIBBON ROAD: For the last 20 years, Brenda Heslop has been one of the undiscovered talents of songwriting. Only now is she starting to get the attention she has so long deserved, with singers taking up her lovely songs and spreading the word. By using a simple arrangement of guitar, accordion and vocals, the lyrics and meaning of the songs are allowed to come through and this, combined with Brenda’s lovely voice and the harmonies provided by Jill and Geoff provides a powerful combination and gives the music a directness which is often missing in contemporary song. "Ribbon Road is songwriter Brenda Heslop and her husband Geoff (famed producer of many classic releases). They sing in perfect balance and gentle close harmony on Brenda's acutely personal songs. Tender, intimate and haunting, these songs are genuinely moving and all the better for using absolutely minimal instrumental settings". Leith Folk Club. Victoria Park House Hotel, 221 Ferry Road, Edinburgh, Doors Open - 7.30pm, Price - £7. Tickets available from:- Website - www.leithfolkclub.com, Email - [email protected] Phone - 07502024852 15 JUNE THIRTEEN-SEVEN: Supporting touring Australian band VALENTIINE with support also from CABLE35. Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend, Gary Fletcher and Tom McGuinness. The Blues Band is acknowledged throughout Europe and beyond as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues. Howden Park Centre, Howden, Livingston. 28 JUNE The Queen’s Hall presents LEO BLANCO: Venezuelan pianist Leo Blanco is a genuine virtuoso with a huge musical personality. His music is rooted in the Africa-Latina rhythms of his homeland and enriched by the vast knowledge of jazz and understanding of the classical tradition that you might expect from a professor of piano at America’s premier music college, Berklee, who has worked alongside jazz masters Pat Metheny, George Garzone and Bob Moses and has guested with numerous symphony orchestras. As a composer Blanco has scored music for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, his own string quartet and most recently, Scottish horn quartet Brass Jaw, and his recordings have featured

saxophonists Dave Liebman and Donny McCaslin, West African guitarist Lionel Loueke, Grammy award-winning singer Luciana Souza, and drummer Antonio Sanchez. His solo concerts are enthralling and rhapsodic displays of technical command and emotional communication, showing why on previous visits to Scotland Blanco has earned five-star reviews from The Scotsman and The Herald, drawn standing ovations at Aberdeen Jazz Festival and is the proud winner of a coveted Bank of Scotland Herald Angel, awarded for outstanding performances during the Edinburgh Festival. The Queen's Hall, Clerk Street, Edinburgh. Tickets £13.00. Time 8pm. For almost 2 decades, he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with a mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado. For the last 10 years Gavin Moore has taken his time in tending his own branch of a family tree that is among the most celebrated in Irish music. With De Barras folk club in Clonakilty as his base, he has perfected his craft on the Irish, UK, US, European, Australian and Scandinavian folk circuits. THE HOT SEATS; Virginian livewires ‘The Hot Seats’ have wowed the crowds at big events such as Celtic Connections, Shetland Folk Festival, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, Maverick Festival, Speyfest and Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they picked up the biggest accolade possible – a Herald Angel – for their outstanding contribution to the event. Of course, they are now recognised as one of the most popular and entertaining touring bands on the UK roots music circuit too, pulling capacity crowds to many venues due to their solid reputation as an act that’s not to be missed. This band has the unique ability to appeal to all age groups – and cut across all musical boundaries. Guaranteed to put smiles on every face. Aros, Viewfield Road, Portree, Isle of Skye. It was this mix of musical styles and sounds that set the path for the band’s 2005 debut album, ‘West Coast Life.’ The more the fledgling band experimented with fusing together this mix of musical styles, the more their signature sound evolved, aided by the arrival of Barry Caulfield (bass & vocals) and Craig Espie (fiddle).
