Over 300 young musicians from across the Highlands have been busy rehearsing for their unique showcase Concerts Festival which will feature the eight diverse groups working under the umbrella of Highland Young Musicians.

Held in Inverness at Eden Court’s Empire Theatre on Saturday 12 March, the festival will open with a performance of Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony by Highland Regional Youth Orchestra under the baton of Conductor Chris George, at 2.30pm. This opening performance will be followed by diverse programmes from Highland Youth Choir; ‘snas and Còisir G along with special guests ‘The Rolling Drones’.

This matchless festival of music continues for the rest of the afternoon and evening with the unique sounds of a percussion ensemble at 6pm followed by Highland Youth Pipe Band (with guests from Marion Munro School of Dance), Highland Youth String Orchestra and Highland Youth Big Band. The festival will end with the powerful sound of the Highland Youth Wind Band who are also competing in the final of the Scottish Concert Band Festival in Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 20th March.

The eight Highland Regional Music Groups are organised and run by The Highland Council as an extension to the work of its Instrumental Tuition Service. Membership for all groups is by invitation after an Audition Day held in May each year. Some of the musicians are also members of national instrumental ensembles.

The Council’s Music Development Officer, Norman Bolton said: “The groups are populated by some of Highland’s most talented young musicians from primary and secondary schools across the area and range in ages from 7 years up to 17. The groups give young players the experience of performing live at the highest standards and the chance to develop their skills beyond any opportunity available in individual schools. It is a testament to the standards of these groups that external organisations and musicians are more than happy to collaborate with us. I hope as many people as possible take this opportunity to come and enjoy some terrific music. This unique festival is something we should be very proud of in Highland. It really offers something for everyone and can’t fail

to prove that youth music-making in our area is flourishing.”

Festival entry, costs £10 for 18 years and over and £5 for children. This allows ticket holders to come and go throughout the day. Bookings can be made via Eden Court’s Box Office on 01463 234234 or at www.eden-court.co.uk . Food and refreshments will be available in the venue during the event.

Doune The Rabbit Hole, one of Scotland’s most intimate music and arts festivals, has revealed its line-up for this year, taking place at the idyllic Cardross Estate from 19-21 August. Scottish favourites Admiral Fallow and Treacherous Orchestra as well as Welsh Songstress Cate Le Bon will all be performing at the three day event.

Other newly announced acts include a whole host of Scottish talent including C Duncan, Mungo’s HiFi w/ Solo Banton, Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5 and Emma Pollock, amongst others. Adding a splash of international flavour to the line-up is the Italian longtime tropical and jazz DJ, Clap! Clap!; Rough Trade signee, Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts; and Japanese duo, Sax Ruins, featuring worldrenowned drummer Yoshida Tatsuya. Not to mention the masterful Awesome Tapes From Africa who has performed coveted slots across the world including many a Boiler Room session, London’s Café Oto and our very own CCA in Glasgow.

Described as ‘heaven’ by Clash Magazine, Doune The Rabbit Hole has been named among the best of family-friendly festivals by the likes of The Herald and this year will be no different. Having started life in 2010 near the town of Doune (hence the name!) the festival has since moved to Cardross Estate. Set near the tranquil Lake of Menteith (Scotland’s only one!) and within beautiful parkland grounds, the festival will not only host a variety of local and international acts but will also feature an activity-packed children’s area and a dedicated family campsite. As well as this, Doune the Rabbit Hole has also been lucky enough to receive funding from EventScotland to help celebrate the Year of Innovation Architecture and Design. This grant will be used to bring a selection of artists and architects together to design and build a brand new stage and will feature an eclectic programme of new, innovative music to be curated by The Tolbooth in Stirling.

Doune The Rabbit Hole has previously hosted a diverse bunch of acts from Glasgow indie icons The Pastels and SAY award winners Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat through to Optimo’s JD Twitch and post-electro outfit Errors. The festival is set to return with a spectacular multi-arts bill over the August bank holiday weekend featuring an eclectic mix of acts across a carefully curated line-up.

Line-up so far: Admiral Fallow, Cate Le Bon, Treacherous Orchestra, Mungo’s HiFi w/ Solo Banton, Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts, C Duncan, Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, Blanck Mass,

Richard Dawson, Clap! Clap!, Awesome Tapes from Africa, Emma Pollock, Bombskare, The Destroyers, Sax Ruins, Mickey 9’s, Shopping, BABE, De Rosa, Rozi Plain, Iona Fyfe Band, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Vasa, Sound of Yell, Woodenbox, Jo Mango, Bossy Love, Teen Canteen, The Crying Lion, Howie Reeve, Honey & The Herbs, Massicot, Urang Matang, The Creeping Ivies, Glad Community Choir Sings Bowie, Cairo Liberation Front, Upjumped Brass Band, Samedia Shebeen DJs, Hannah Lou Clark, Møgen, Alien Lullabies, Raza.

With an event capacity of only 3000, Doune The Rabbit Hole organisers pride themselves on being one of the country’s smallest festivals, giving the event a uniquely intimate and friendly atmosphere. Families are warmly welcomed at the festival with tickets for children aged 12 and under available for free, so all ages can experience the range of activities over the course of the weekend.

Jamie Murray, Director of Doune The Rabbit Hole Community Interest Group, said: “There is a real sense of community-spirit at Doune the Rabbit Hole and I guarantee you make friends for life. It is pretty rare to find an event that embraces a family-friendly culture whilst celebrating some amazing music from all genres. Where else would you see everyone, from toddlers to pensioners soaking up a festival atmosphere?”

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “We are delighted to support Doune the Rabbit Hole in 2016 and are confident event organisers have, once again, secured a line-up that will draw attendees from all over Scotland. Doune the Rabbit hole demonstrates exactly why Scotland is the perfect stage for music events by providing the opportunity for music lovers to witness terrific home-grown and international talent while enjoying a unique family-friendly atmosphere and stunning scenery.”

“Imagine a festival attended by all walks of life, from toddlers right

through to ageing hippies. Imagine a festival small enough that

everyone feels comfortable and safe with everyone around them. Imagine a festival where quite

often you find yourself questioning reality and art and wondering

whether the lines of the two have blurred somewhere perfectly in

A modern, energetic team are reigniting the Killin Music Festival running from 17-19 June, bringing numerous headline talent to the stage in Killin, Perthshire. In the festival's first maiden year KIllin will welcome Skipinnish, Trail West, BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2015 - Claire Hastings with her band, Donald Black, the Scott Wood Band plus many more incredibly talented artists to our stage. In years gone by, the Killin Traditional Music and Dance Festival was held in the area. Headed by the late Danny Kyle who lent his talent as the artisitic director, the festival starting in the 90's and lasting until the early 2000's. It was a prime

entry on the festival calendar and was much missed and fondly remembered when it fell by the wayside. The new modern, rebranded and rethought Killin Music Festival main stage is being run in the McLaren Hall, Killin. This will limit ticket numbers considerably compared to the other established festivals, resulting in smaller, more intimate gigs with Killin's packed lineup. Festival go-ers are encouraged to make use of local accommodation providers as Killin won't be running a festival campsite this year. This will be re-evaluated for next year, depending on this year's success. Remaining day tickets are on sale at the link above and selling fast! Killin is also encouraging impromptu music sessions throughout the village in their session bars. There will also be numerous workshops going on, with more details to be released nearer the time. The festival is holding a fundraising concert on 19 March in the Mclaren Hall to help with financing and to seek businesses who would be interested in our sponsorship opportunities. This will feature all the wonderful musicians Killin has

on its doorstep - and you can even buy an official festival t-shirt! The fantastic programme features: Alpine Road, Frances Morrison-Allen, Killin Community Choir, Siobhan Anderson, Duncan McKinnon, Tommy Weir and Willie Chisholm and many more to be announced. Tickets on the night with doors open at 7pm with the first performance beginning at 7.30pm. Killin Music Festival aims to make sure you will have a weekend filled with memory making moments!

HebCelt organisers are also aiming to ease accommodation pressure in Stornoway by joining forces for the first time with Glasgow based 'Pitch Village' to bring a new style of camping to the festival.

Pitch Village will provide 50 tents initially – pre-pitched and fully-equipped - on a site at Willowglen, allowing festival goers the chance to pre-book accommodation for two to eight people. The site will also offer showers, toilets, storage facilities, phone charging and dedicated security.

This will complement the existing campsites and other accommodation which is at a premium during festival week when about 15,000 people attend the four-day event – about twice the population of Stornoway.

The influx of visitors means hotels, guest houses and the campsites are usually fully booked during festival week and an annual appeal is made for local residents to make spare rooms or beds available.

Susan Millichip, one of the Pitch Village founders, said: “This is our first year providing this service at festivals and we think it will make a real difference to an event like HebCelt where accommodation can be a real issue.

“It’s hassle-free camping and because people don’t have to carry heavy equipment they don’t need to take their cars. That makes it cheaper and better for the environment.”

Caroline Maclennan added: “This is a new innovation for us and one I think will be very popular with people travelling to attend HebCelt.

“It offers the camper something entirely new

and is designed to complement the range of accommodation available on the island which are stretched beyond belief during the festival.

“The environmentally friendly approach is also in keeping with the festival’s ethos and we hope to attract light travellers which will also help reduce further the carbon footprint of the festival.”

HebCelt has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international showpiece for roots, Celtic and traditional music, generating more than £20 million for the local economy over two decades.

Last year, it marked its 20th anniversary by hosting its biggest number of live performances ever with more than 50 hours of music and arts events staged in the main arena in the grounds of Lews Castle, as well as at an Lanntair arts centre in the town centre and other venues in rural areas.
