With interest now high on both sides of the Atlantic, Aoife O’Donovan’s shows are not to be missed. RACHEL RIES hails from the inspiring, vast expanses of South Dakota, by way of Zaire. Her formative years were filled with Mennonite hymns, Suzuki violin and The Carpenters. Currently splitting her time between rural Vermont and New York City, she crafts sly and compassionate songs for the crooked hearted. With a clear voice and steady hand, she pulls the listener into her world of city grit, country dirt, and her open-eyed search for redemption and reason. The Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Edinburgh.

BLUE ROSE CODE: ‘The Ballads Of Peckham Rye’ UK Launch Tour. At Northern Roots Festival, Inverness. Blue Rose Code is not folk music. Or so he’s been told. Ross Wilson, the Edinburgh-born songwriter who labours under that name doesn’t write folk songs. But having discovered the traditional music of the British Isles whilst in exile down south, he fell in love with what he heard. Those sounds informed what happened next. His new album 'The Ballads Of Peckham Rye' features a remarkable roll call of musicians from the folk side of the fence, including Karine Polwart, Mattie Foulds, Lau’s Aidan O’Rourke and Rachel Newton from The Furrow Collective. To make it harder for our few remaining record shops to file Blue Rose Code in a rack, the new album also features two of the Scottish jazz scene’s supreme talents in trumpeter Colin Steele and pianist Dave Milligan. And on bass, the unclassifiable but unutterably classy Danny Thompson warms and grounds these songs, as only he can. www.facebook.com/bluerosecode www.bluerosecode.com FAT GOTH: Album launch show. for 'One Hundred Percent Suave' At Hootananny's, Inverness. MAY Southside Fringe Glasgow 9-25 May It’s an incredibly exciting time in the Southside with fantastic new venues The Glad Café and The Bungo actively encouraging creativity and supporting local Southside talent. The ethos of the Southside Fringe is very much ‘strength in numbers’ : the more facets of the community and local businesses who get involved the louder our voice and the bigger the Southside’s profile will be on the festival map. www.southsidefringe.org.uk Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival Dumfries and Galloway 16-25 May Our 9-day festival has taken place since 1979. The founding aim was to bring international per-formers of the highest quality to a region con-taining many scattered rural communities since then this region has produced some of its own talent of international standing and we’re proud to also be able to present these artistes from time to time. We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the vis-ual arts and films. Events take place in a range of venues throughout the region, from large to small, formal to informal, urban to rural. www.dgartsfestival.org.uk Knockengorroch World Ceilidh Kirkcudbright 22-25 May If you prefer a bigger festival in a smaller pot you are a Knockengorrocher! Join us beside the glittering Water of Deugh beneath the broad shoulders of southwest Scotland's great moun-tain peaks to celebrate some of the finest music from the Celtic diaspora and everywhere in-between. The World Ceilidh melds together the most ancient roots music with the latest cutting edge sounds. This first truly backwoods upland music fest in Scotland hosts some of the best musicians and performers from across the world. All are invited to journey over hill and dale by rock and stream to our natural greenfield auditorium and to our upland stage to experience the biggest little festival this side of anywhere! www.knockengorroch.org.uk Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 22-25 May Here we are folks – Orkney Folk Festival number 32! Once again we have some big names com-ing north to join in the fun in May, and from the ceilidh bands to the almost indie strand, we have brought together a broad mix of artists that we hope appeals to everyone’s interpreta-tion of the increasingly expansive folk genre. As ever, our local traditions and musicians – both established and emerging – will be centre stage alongside those visiting the festival. You would be hard pushed to find another festival through-out the country that has such a strong home

representation, and it is one that we are hugely proud of. www.orkneyfolkfestival.com Doune & Dunblane Fling Dunblane 22-15 May Like many others, the Fling was conceived with the help of music and alcohol. It began as an idea at the Dunblane Folk Club, among a group of people fond of music and fun. And so in May 1993 the first Fling happened. Since then the Fling has gone from strength to strength. Some-where along the line the first 'Fling by the River' began. Held each Fling Saturday on Dunblane's historic Drying Green, its activities have ranged from an open stage for local young musicians, fire engines, space-hopper races and fire-eating jugglers, to the annual Rotary Club race for 4,000 plastic ducks down the Allan Water. Gradually a 'Fringe Fling' has developed, featur-ing over the years everything from ghost walks, pub quizzes, plays from the local Drama Group, master classes in everything from fiddling or mandolins to harmony singing or bodhran, and the now-annual Thursday Jazz Night. www.dunblanefling.com Perth Festival of the Arts Perth 22 May - 1 June Perth Festival of the Arts is one if the highlights in Perth's cultural calendar in Scotland. Now its 43rd year, it covers a wide range of artforms from classical music and opera to rock music and drama. Concerts are staged in Perth Concert Hall and St John's Kirk. www.perthfestival.co.uk Kilmarnock's Dirty Weekender Kilmarnock 23-25 May Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender music festival was established in 2012. In 2013 the event ex-panded with over 40 acts performing and a third venue being added to include an all agers stage. In 2014 Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender will see further growth with the inclusion of the 1300 ca-pacity Grand Hall venue. 2014 will also see the development and implementation of Glasgow’s Dirty Weekender. This will take place between the 28 February and the 1 March over three of the city’s venues, Pivo Pivo, Ivory Blacks and Stereo. The Dirty Weekender crew will take its years of experience and deliver a unique and di-verse event to Glasgow for the first time. www.killieweekender.com Montrose Music Festival Montrose 23-25 May Montrose Music Festival is a Scottish music festi-val which takes place at the end of May in Mon-trose, Angus.
