REDD KROSS; Redd Kross have always been too good, too perfect, too true, to believe. Mythic. Could this tuneful hardcore punk EP really be the work of a brother band with the 15-year-old on vocals and guitar and the 11-year-old on bass? Did Redd Kross really open for Black Flag? Could Jeff and Steve really have been born and raised in the Beach Boys’ hometown of Hawthorne, California, and did Jeff really see the Beatles live in 1966? Did one of them, dressed in Gene Simmons makeup, really kill a Bruce Springsteen impersonator onstage? Is that really their hair? Could Researching the Blues, their first studio album in 15 years, be not just the hottest thing since Cher went solo but the best start-to-finish Redd Kross record ever King Tut's Wah Wah Hut 272a St Vincent Street, Glasgow. STAN WEBB'S CHICKEN SHACK: MaBlues band formed back in the mid-60s by Stan Webb, Chicken Shack are a mainstay of the British blues scene. Stan Webb is recognised high in the top ten of British blues guitarists. He started Chicken Shack in 1965 and within two years they were topping the charts with'I'd Rather Go Blind' featuring Christine Perfect (aka McVie), later of Fleetwood Mac' Rumours' era. Stan's style owes much to his friend and mentor, the legendary Freddie King, who inspired Stan Webb's delicate vibrato and sustain, and above all else his emotive blues tone. Aside from a stint with Canned Heat (the only UK guitarist to ever play with them) and Savoy Brown, Stan continues to tour Chickenshack in Europe and occasionally in the UK. Backstage at the Green Hotel, 2 The Muirs, Kinross. Tickets £22. 25 JANUARY

MICHAEL KATON: While it's entirely accurate to describe the music of Detroit legend Michael Katon as 'blues', it also fails to do justice to the power, intensity and raw Motor City attitude that Katon commands with every note and chord. Ever since he first started playing around the bars and clubs of Detroit at the tender age of fifteen, Katon has infused the traditional blues sound with his own Michigan. Backstage at the Green Hotel, 2 The Muirs, Kinross. It's a barnstorming opening to a real blockbuster of a concert from RSNO Music Director Peter Oundjian, and it's almost mild compared to William Walton's volcanic First Symphony. You'll want to cool down between them - and Mozart's deliciously playful piano concerto is perfect for the job, especially when performed by master-

Mozartian Richard Goode. 'Richard Goode's ability to clothe the intellectual backbone of his interpretations in playing of airy mercuriality may not be unique, but it is rare and individual enough to make his recitals unmissable.' (The Guardian). Time 7.30pm. Tickets £20, £16, £12; concessions £18, £14, £10 Horsecross, Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre 185 High Street, Perth. Individually they're two of the best players around but collectively they create a chemistry which is almost magic. They are not only vastly talented but have created a sound that is bursting with emotion and energy - a fusion of pipes and flutes which pushes the boundaries of what the instruments can achieve in a performance which is a vibrant mix of new and original compositions along with traditional tunes. Two of the most major talents in contemporary Celtic piping, Scotland's Ross Ainslie and Tyrone-born Jarlath Henderson first met back in 2003 at the William Kennedy Piping Festival in Armagh. After taking their time to hone and perfect their unique partnership of Scottish bagpipes and Irish uilleann pipes, each also playing a variety of whistles, the pair exploded onto the scene with 2009's stunning debut album, Partners in Crime. Taking a couple of years off, Radio 2 Musician of the Year Award nominee Ross performed with Salsa Celtica, The Treacherous Orchestra and

Dougie Maclean whilst Jarlath became a doctor. With new album Air-Fix now released they are back on the road doing what they do best. Ross and Jarlath will be backed by the wonderfully talented Ali Hutton on guitar.
