LIMBO WITH SPECIAL GUESTS THE GILLYFLOWERS / KING EIDER / HAILEY BEAVIS; The Gillyflowers are lead by a hard-wired and intrinsic talent Kirsten Adamson. Spending time in Nashville with dad Stuart Adamson of Big Country, Kirsten, at the tender age of 12 recognized that her particular

songwriting style was 'a little more country' than a girl from Scotland's should be. Now 25 and living in Edinburgh, she has just finished writing her first album and has been lucky enough to meet like minded individuals, with talent and passion for her music. Edinburgh-based folk-blues band KING EIDER, are a talented five-piece who create a modern acoustic sound using traditional musicianship. From the loud to the soft, the haunting to the upbeat, the harmonic strength of this band lies in their unique mix of three-part harmonies, acoustic guitar, bass, drums and classical strings. Their sound encompasses certain aspects of Ben Howard’s melodic soulfulness, the drive of Mumford and Sons, and always shows a flair for the foot-stomping fun reminiscent of Arcade Fire. Hailey Beavis has toured the UK and Europe as part of The Forest Records Collective and plays folk music influenced by Ani DiFranco, Cat Power and Burt Bacharach. Tickets £7.50 CARSON CITY; Grand Ole Opry, 2-4 Govan Road, Glasgow. JD MCPHERSON, While making raw, visceral, booty-shaking

rockabilly and rhythm'n'blues music, with its heart firmly in the 1950s, Oklahoma native JD McPherson's deceptively sophisticated songwriting adds a smart contemporary spin to the mix, weaving in allusions and samples as diverse as the Smiths, Stiff Little Fingers and Wu-Tang Clan. Following a major online buzz, his self-released debut album Signs and Signifiers was reissued by Rounder in 2012. Glasgow four-piece The Shiverin’ Sheiks include members of The Five Aces, The Bottleneckers, The Hidden Masters and The Low Miffs, sharing their love of vintage rock’n’roll, gospel, doo-wop, country and swing. The Venue, Òran Mór,Top of Byres Road,Glasgow, Time 7:00pm, Tickets £14.50 A nTASTE OF CELTIC COLOURS; Since its inception in 1997, Celtic Colours in Cape Breton has been one of Celtic Connections’ closest kindred festivals, building on the island’s unique Scottish and Gaelic heritage with a fruitful two-way traffic of artists, ideas and audiences. exploring the possibilities of how they can push their sound. In making it, the group took to heart a quote from the sage Pasadena thinker David Lee Roth that goes something like: “The first rule of rock & roll is if it sounds good, it is good.” King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street Glasgow. KATY CARR; Though she certainly likes to dress the part, Katy Carr's musical journey through the 1940's is far removed from any mere fashion statement. While her 2009 album Coquette channelled the spirit and glamour of such World War II-era icons as Gracie Fields, Ginger Rogers and Vera Lynn into edgy alt-folk songwriting, alongside reworked period classics, Carr's new release Paszport, inspired by meeting an escapee from Auschwitz - one of only 144 in the camp's entire grim history - reconnects with her own Polish roots via his and other veterans' stories. Her performance incorporates specially-created short films and visual projections, reflecting the narrative behind the songs. The Venue, Òran Mór,Top of Byres Road,Glasgow, Time 7:00pm, Tickets £12. It's the most exciting, life-affirming noise that exists on this planet of ours, and London's indestructible masters of the furious form are Orange Goblin. Not just the UK's reigning champions of balls-out, party-starting, booze-fuelled metal, but one of the very best live rock bands of all time, the mighty Goblin have been a permanent and universally admired fixture on the British metal circuit for the past 16 years. And now they're back, with ‘A Eulogy for the Damned', their seventh and best studio album. A thunderous tour-de-force of gargantuan riffs, subterranean rumble and electrifying energy, it is the album the band have been threatening to make since they first crawled, with crumpled beer cans in hand, from the grubby Soho shadows back in the mid-90s. Time 8pm, Tickets £12/£10 THE COALTOWN DAISES fuse together the musical stylings of established singer-songwriters, Lynzy Moutter and Vivienne Bern. Described as 'spell-binding', 'spine-tingling' and 'breath-taking', The Coaltown Daisies have performed at an abundance of venues and festivals on their journey. and have a very busy future ahead; they want to continue sharing their music as far and wide as possible and already have great plans to keep on doing so in 2013. That was fuelled by the incredible afterlife of their fabled (and famously misspelt) 'Odessey and Oracle' album, released after the band's initial split in 1968. CHRISTINE BOVILL - PIAF. 25th and 26th. Scotland’s Little Sparrow and multi award winning songwriter and performer returns to the Lemon Tree with her show PIAF. Last year PIAF sold out the Lemon Tree and the entire run sold out at the Edinburgh Festival 2012 as well as all over the country. Bovill is the world’s best Piaf performer! Charles Dumont

himself, writer of “No Regrets” and 40 other songs for Edith Piaf flew into Edinburgh from Paris to appear on stage and play for her. He said “Christine sings so well, so beautifully.” Edinburgh Festival.org wrote, “It was as if Piaf had been alive again for a few moments with us as Christine performed.” No pretence. No gimmicks. Simply a voice. Pure and majestic. Singing of life's triumphs and tragedies, resisting the temptation of retelling her life story, PIAF focuses instead on the music. Stonehaven Folk Club, Community Centre, Bath Street, Stonehaven. 26 JANUARY THE PICTISH TRAIL + Eagleowl It’s not easy to pin down The Pictish Trail, aka Johnny Lynch. His critically acclaimed 2008 debut album, Secret Soundz Vol. 1, was a gloriously eclectic slice of lo-fi folk-pop, and he is also one half of demented dance-pop duo Silver Columns with Adem Ilhan. As if that wasn’t enough, Lynch also has his hands full with Fence Records, a DIY indie label based in the East Neuk of Fife, which he runs alongside Kenny Anderson, best known as King Creosote. Fence’s events, including the Home Game festival in Anstruther and Away Game on the remote Hebridean island of Eigg, are infamous for selling out in a matter of minutes and attract music fans from all over the world to Scotland. After a summer spent playing the pick of the UK’s music festivals with his band, Lynch is now back home on Eigg where he’s putting the finishing touches to Secret Soundz Vol 2, due to be released on January 21st, 2013. SHARON KING and the RECKLESS ANGELS with Laura Beth Salter. Sharon King and the Reckless Angels continues to build a reputation for vibrant, funny, relaxed and intimate live shows. She has recently recorded album number four: NOTHING = EVERYTHING to critical acclaim. Touring the UK in Autumn 2013 with her trio The Reckless Angels, King is a natural raconteur with an easy grace. Her astute observations on Scottish life are carried in contemporary song writing, delivered wrapped in laughter. Her songs and banter are peppered with tales of her travels: colours and textures are artfully woven through the narratives by the instruments and voices of The Reckless Angels. BABEL FISH; The marvellously mutant musical organism known as Babel Fish was first spawned well over a decade ago, at Glasgow's Celtic Connections festival. Emerging from the primordial soup of the infamous

Festival Club, Babel Fish developed a sound whose sources range from traditional Scottish to Jimi Hendrix, cross-fertilising Celtic, Balkan, jazz, rock and funk influences. Urquhart alternately muses and inveighs amidst music that roams from wayward adventure to anthemic euphoria. It might be a wholly untamed beast, but Babel Fish somehow engenders its own internal logic, a fusion of freedom and discipline to make you dance, smile, ponder and dream. Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre, Eastgate, Peebles, Time 7.30pm. £14 (£5 under 16s). Tickets: 01721 725 777 BURNS NIGHT BASH Undoubtedly one of our most popular nights of the whole year, the Burns Night Bash is a great opportunity for local musicians to come and play and have a good time. It’s the night when the String Jam Club’s stage is being thrown open to musicians everywhere who want to perform & share their music. Everyone will be a star for the night so please be there and take part in this magical musical marathon. Whether performing or just coming along to listen, you are very welcome. Such is the demand that performance spaces have nearly gone already, so if you want to play, get in touch NOW before you miss the boat. Whatever style of music you play, whether you're into jazz, folk, blues or singer-songwriters or whatever, whether you perform original material or do covers, whoever you are - we want to hear you play so come on down and enjoy the unique String Jam experience! And for musicians, it’s a great chance to play through a professional PA system with a fantastic engineer, so you’ll get the best sound possible. Please note you don’t have to perform a Burns song, but it will be very welcome if you do! Toasting the haggis, piper & festive raffle, AND the unforgettable unique rendition of Tam O’Shanter (complete with props) makes this a night to remember (not to mention the Lovehearts ,and the lovely Kathy Stewart who will be compering). The Burns Night Bash is a tribute to all the local musicians who have helped to create the enduring success of the String Jam Club "the Borders haven of acoustic music” - now in its 16th year. Thanks to everyone who helps keep this

“Border musical treasure” going, you are the life blood of live music in the area, and without you String Jam Club would not be the enduring success it has become. String Jam Club, Salmon Inn, Bank Street, Galashiels, Doors 7.15pm, music starts 8.00pm, Admission £8.00 to all on the door (includes haggis supper) Please note this is not a ticketed event 1 FEBRUARY RICHARD DURRANT IN CONCERT; Richard Durrant is a world class virtuoso with an imaginative flair for presentation and a warm and easy rapport with audiences.
