We may have mentioned that this year is our 25th birthday.

We planned to put on some special shows & a few extra special shows to celebrate & as an excuse to see some of our ‘favs’ back in the venue. What we hadn’t planned for was how much fun we’d have doing it. As we’re roughly three quarters of the way through the year we want to say a big thank you to everyone that has come out to enjoy any of the crazy shows we’ve had on this year.

But it doesn’t stop there... August will kick off with some of the heaviest hitters we’ve seen with Aswad, Jocelyn Brown, Sugarhill Gang vs Melle Mel & The Furious Five, KRS-One, Slum Village & Junior Marvin (The Wailers) all in the first two weeks!

September brings more of the same with Third World, Jungle Brothers, Oddissee & Compny & Alexandra Burke! We really do advise you to check out the listings (hint: you’ve already gone past them).

Read on for our full August & September listings as well as an interview with Leee John (Imagination) & a special hidden gem that tells of things to come...

Leee, you have had great success in both the music industry and the acting industry and have been on many television shows, what inspired you to start acting as well as continuing your career in music?I was acting as a child in theatre groups. My sister created the Hewanorra Strolling Players which I was part of - singing, dancing, acting, writing etc. - and I also went to Anna Schers acting school (where a lot of the actors off of Eastenders came from).

Including the acting, performing, radio work what has been the highlight of your career so far? There have been so many highlights of my career, but after doing some charity work with Zindsi Mandela for Operation Hunger charity for the community in Joburg South Africa, I was invited to the Mandela house for dinner which was cooked by Winnie and met and ate with the family which was amazing, singing for Marvin Gaye back stage in the Soul Train studios, the list is endless, it’s a book.

You have a book called ‘From Within the Heart’ about your work with the SOS Children can you tell us about this experience?I have been a patron for SOS children for more than a decade and help bring awareness of the charity for orphan children on a worldwide basis , I have visited Cote d’Ivoire , Angola, South Africa, I even produced a documentary in Zambia about the work SOS does you can see some of it on Youtube.

INTERVIEW: LEEE JOHN

Page 16: Jazz Cafe Brochure August/September Edition

16 AUGUST SEPTEMBER THE JAZZ CAFE www.thejazzcafelondon.com

What has it been like for you to be performing with Imagination 30 years on? My two ex-partners of the group left by the end of the 1980s so I have been the heart and soul of Imagination and I’m very close to all the fans throughout the years as they have helped support and sustain my career.

What do you see yourself doing in the next few years? I’m a multi faceted creature of the arts so I enjoy performing, writing , creating projects, right now I have made an album with the British Collective - the cream of British RnB - which features Noel McKoy, Omar, Don-E and Jr Giscombe which should be out soon. I’m due to finish Flashback; a documentary film of the history of black music check www.flashbackprojectuk.com for the trailer. And I’m midway through an Imagination feat Leee John album for next year. I have just finished a European tour with Kool And The Gang and Earth Wind and Fire. So BIZEEE.

Fancy winning a pair of tickets for you & a friend to see Leee John live at The Jazz Cafe on Friday 16th October? You’ll also get a goodie bag including signed CDs, exclusive pictures, t-shirts & you even get a ‘meet’n’greet’ with Leee himself on the night of the show!

To enter the competition simply answer the following question: What was Imagination’s first single?

Send your answer along with your name to [email protected] using the subject ‘Leee John Jazz Cafe Brochure Competition’. Submissions without this subject will not be counted. Last date for entry is 30th September 2015. Prizes subject to change.
