It’s great to have you back! What isthe impetus for returning to the stageto play live shows?

I am very inspired, as I 'have been'for some years now to play publiclyagain. I did take a small break, whichI'm almost sure that by now, whoeverreads this, or knows 'anything' aboutme, should understand thatsometimes a hiatus becomesnecessary. The album release on Sonyhas been a big reason to get back outthere, but most of all, I am ready now,and excited to get back to London afterall these years. When was your last performance?

The last live performance I playedwas at the ‘Hollywood Palladium’, atthe 'Mos-Def' - 'Erykah Badu' concert. It was a unique experience playingwith samples 'only' for the first time, but it was fun. I played on ‘Blue BlackJack’. A song that Mos had asked meto play on for on ‘The New Danger’album.Earlier this year there was a limitededition 7’ release of InspirationInformation b/w Magic that magicallyappeared on the shelves forRecordStore Day 2012. I heard there'ssomething in store for early next yearcan you give any hints?

I am releasing a double albumpackage on Sony, so look out forsomething special for record store dayaround that. I am also currentlyrecording new material. I now own andrun my own company entitled:‘Shugiterius Enterprises LLC’.I have already started on mynew music, on analog tape, mypreferred method of recording.Inspiration Information inspiredmany musicians to hone their craft.Have you had an opportunity torecord anything recently? Whatinspires you these days?

As noted above, yes I am currentlyrecording brand new music for a 2013release. In fact, I have never stoppedrecording in my home studio since the'70s. My Inspiration’ comes from GOD.I believe that life is some sort of a'plan'. The ups and downs of amusician’s life are no different thananyone else. I happen to be veryinspired to play, and travel right now.Any chance for more dates nextyear around the InspirationInformation release?

Yes, plans are already in motion fortour dates around the album launch –watch this space!

There seems to be some confusionas to whether you are a jazz or arock drummer?

Unfortunately the press like torefer to me as a rock drummer. Ijust play how I play.Do you think there is a medianecessity to put you into apigeonhole?

I really don’t know! Cream was putinto this bag of being a rock and rollband and it wasn’t, 80 percent ofCream’s music if not more wasimprovised, we never played thesame two notes running. I was ableto become great friends, play withand have the respect of Max Roach,Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly JoeJones and Phil Seamen all Jazzplayers. I had the pleasure ofplaying with them and we allbecame inseparable friends, itmeans more to me than lots ofmoney and things, to have thefriendship and respect of the guys Iidolise means the world to me!At your age are you able tomaintain the level of drumming youare known for?

In some ways I think I am playingbetter than I have ever played, obviously I’ve not got the strengthand stamina to do a twenty-minutedrum solo but I certainly enjoyplaying. It’s about all I have got left,it’s quite a miracle that all thathasn’t been taken away from me ismy ability to play the drums, I’m 73now, still playing and enjoying it.

Is there a up and coming drummeryou like?

I don’t really know. NO! I don’tlisten to music, I never have done, except maybe before I became amusician or in my early years. I’venever had fantastic technique, butit’s not how many notes you play in abar it’s where you play them and thenotes that you don’t play. How do you react to statements like‘you are the most influentialdrummer of the 1960s’ and ‘it wasrare to see drummers with twokicks before you’?

That’s a lot of crap! In the DukeEllington band every drummer hadtwo bass drums it was Ellington’sinvention, actually (Keith) Moon got atwo bass drum before me. In1966 inwe watched a gig and I was veryimpressed with some of the stuff thedrummer played on two bass’s so Isaid to Moon I’m definitely going toget a two bass drum kit and we wentinto Premier Drum Shop and boughttwo identical kits, strung themtogether and made it fit to myspecifications but Moon actually wasplaying a two bass drum before I was.If you could re-create one momentfrom your time in Cream whichmoment would that be?

God knows… I dunno, (laughs)probably the first time we playedtogether, there was just a magicthere, it just worked immediately, just like the band now first time weplayed together we all enjoyed it, itjust works.
