...and the aroma of pine needles, we can’t help but notice that Christmas will be upon us before we have a chance to blink. But before you start hanging the wreaths and mistletoe we must say a big thanks to everyone that came out to any of our crazy shows this autumn.

Now the soppy bits are out of the way it’s time to look ahead at what festive treats we have been planning for you. December will see Average White Band, Dwele & The Brand New Heavies take up Christmas residencies at The Jazz Cafe, do you need a better excuse to check out our brand new Christmas menu?
Not to mention our special New Years Eve show with Introducing:Live recreating Daft Punk’s Discovery album live onstage with support from The Correspondents & Kill The Robot. How else would you spend the last minutes of ?

08 DECEMBER THE JAZZ CAFE www.thejazzcafelondon.com
YOU’VE put on a number of outstanding performances at The Jazz Cafe over the past few years. How does it feel to return to the venue this December?
Well it’s definitely great to return home! When we first started out, many of our shows were in Camden so to be playing at The Jazz Cafe again brings back some great memories!
What can we expect fromyour show this year?
We’re planning on combining material from our latest album ‘Sweet Freaks’ with a selection of golden classics and some Christmas cheer to top it off!
You were originally called ‘Brothers International’. Is there any particular reason why you changed name to ‘The Brand New Heavies?
Originally we were called Diana Brown & The Brothers before we settled on The Brothers International, however after a lineup change and our first record deal we realised that the band was in need of a slight makeover. We came up with The Brand New Heavies after reading the back of a James Brown LP where he had declared himself as the minister of
the New Super Heavy Funk. We playe;d around with the words a little and the rest is history!
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
This interview! It’s difficult to pin point one particular moment from our career however playing live is always a priceless experience and definitely a personal highlight.
Do you enjoy performing to smaller or larger crowds?
When it comes to larger crowds nothing beats a large audience going crazy for the band and the music. Nonetheless, smaller venues are without a doubt my favourite as there’s a certain level of intimacy that creates a family affair of funk!
Where do you see the band in the next five years?
Who knows? Life eh! We’re really motivated and excited to create new music so hopefully we’ll be releasing new material and touring! • Don’t miss The Brand New Heavies live at The Jazz Cafe - Monday 15th, Tuesday 16th & Wednesday 17th December - Tickets £25 adv

INTRODUCING 2015: NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY WITH INTRODUCING: LIVE RECREATING DAFT PUNK’S ‘DISCOVERY’ + THE CORRESPONDENTS + KILL THE ROBOT
www.thejazzcafelondon.com THE JAZZ CAFE DECEMBER JANUARY 15
WE ARE excited to invite you to the most anticipated event of the year: New Years Eve (obviously)! To celebrate the occasion and bid farewell to 2014, we’ve invited some of the music industry’s most sought after acts to lend a helping hand and make it a night to remember. Headlining the night will be Introducing: Live the musical geniuses who are most renowned for their cover of Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’ and disco jams.
Joining them will be manic duo THE CORRESPONDENTS and electronic band KILL THE ROBOT who are set to get you in the party mood from the early hours of the evening. With a number of limited early bird tickets available and the restaurant open from 7pm onwards, The Jazz Cafe’s New Year’s Eve party is certainly not one to miss. Head over to our website where you can purchase tickets in advance to ensure that you welcome in the New Year in true style.
16 DECEMBER JANUARY THE JAZZ CAFE www.thejazzcafelondon.com
AFTER several sold out shows at The Jazz Cafe you’re set to perform at our infamous New Year’s Eve event alongside The Correspondents & Kill The Robot. How does it feel to be part of a first-class line-up?
We’re really excited about the show. We were flattered when The Jazz Cafe got in touch and asked us if we were up for doing NYE as it’s a proper prestige night and the party atmosphere is bound to be electric.
The gigs we’ve done over the years at JC have been great highlights for the band and the Daft Punk shows are the highlight of the highlights! I’ve also been keen to see the Correspondents live for a while now so to have the chance to play the same line-up as them is an added bonus. It’s going to be massive!
You’re known for recreating sampled and electronic music such as DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing’ and Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’. How do you decide on which artists to cover?
It all stems from Endtroducing, really. We never set out to become the band that recreates sample-based or electronic music live, as such. Matt Derbyshire was listening to Shadow’s
incredible album in 2006/7 and was struck by first, how amazing it is and second, how great it would be to hear it played live. Everyone told him he was mad and that it was impossible which only made him want to make it happen even more! Fortunately he knew the one drummer capable of playing the crazy beats from that album and the idea snowballed from there.
Whilst touring we had the chance to meet Mr. Scruff and with the band being big fans of his music the next project was a no-brainer. The weird thing about the Daft Punk show was that when we began work on it they were out of the news and hadn’t done anything for years.
It was only once we’d done our first couple of gigs that rumours emerged of Daft Punk’s new material and now they’re the biggest band on the planet again!
How long did it take to master Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’?
Making the sounds is usually the most time-consuming part of the process. The guys spend hours twiddling knobs until they are happy that they’ve got it right. One of the
INTERVIEW:INTRODUCING:LIVE
www.thejazzcafelondon.com THE JAZZ CAFE DECEMBER JANUARY 17
toughest challenges with ‘Discovery’ was nailing the vocal sounds. Daft Punk are masters of the vocoder and the talk-box so getting those right was essential. With the help of a TC Helicon vocal bo x and a plethora of vocoders I can now imitate almost anyone! I do a very respectable Kanye for starters. I’m still working on my Cher though!
Who are your musical inspirations?
I have an extremely eclectic taste, which is probably why I liked Endtroducing so much in the first place. The album goes from Drum and Bass to Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop and everything in between. Daft Punk are also a huge musical inspiration; it’s impossible to imagine the landscape of dance music without their influence.
Are there any plans to collaborate with any artists in the near future?
We are always looking to expand, evolve and change and are currently in the process of working on a new project. Collaborations are something we’d really like to do more of however.
We had the great honour of playing the Mr. Scruff show in Manchester and have the bassist from the original recording of Spandex Man join us on stage -the first time he’d played it live since the original recording session!
• Don’t go spending New Year’s Eve anywhere else but with us and Introducing:Live at The Jazz Cafe on Wednesday 31st December

25 YEARS SINCE THE DOORS FIRST OPENED and the memories started being made. Now, we may have been keeping it on the down low but we’ve also been working feverishly behind the scenes on our plans to make sure we celebrate in style all year long. After all we’re only going to be 25 once.
‘What have you been doing?’ we hear you ask. Well, firstly we have been inviting some of our favourite artists of the last 25 years to come back and celebrate with us.
So far we’ve already confirmed Roy Ayers, Alice Russell & DJ Jazzy Jeff, amongst others, to return for the festivities. Alongside these legends
we will be championing our own series of ‘future legends’ including the likes of Jarrod Lawson, Alexandra Burke & Jo Harman.
Also in its final stages of planning is our ‘official super birthday party extravaganza’ with a lineup that is sure to melt faces at the mere mention of it! Keep your ears peeled and eyes open for more details.
We will be announcing a whole heap more as the year goes on but this should be enough to wet your whistle for now.
Looking forward to receiving our birthday cards (and pressies)...
We’ve been keeping quiet about it, but... 2015 will mark the 25th birthday of The Jazz Cafe!
