No friend to animalsI am disgusted at the footagescreened over two weeks on TVNZ’sSunday programme which showedthat pigs have been kept in appallingconditions with rats, dead carcassesand now subject to shocking vio-lence caught on camera.

It is the responsibility of NathanGuy to ensure there is a regulatoryprogramme which is fit for purpose.

A responsibility that he seemsincapable of.

A minister must send the mess-age that such actions as kicking andbludgeoning pigs slowly with a ham-mer for over an hour, are notacceptable and immediately pros-ecute farms that behave in such amanner.

If Mr Guy was actually seriousabout ensuring animal welfare, hewould not be attacking the cameracrew for bringing the atrocities tolight, but rather, showing concernfor the welfare of the animals andstamping out this cruel and des-picable behaviour.

Shame.KATY HARDY

Cold spotI wonder who had the idea to move thebus stop from outside the Farmers storeto Bath Street.

This is by far the coldest spot inLevin as it is exposed to the southwesterlies.

At least the bus stop in Shannon hasside panels to shelter from the wind.

As far as reported damage to theroad surface: what is the difference inthe road structure in Bath Street from

that outside Farmers?CARL MOOYMAN

Cost to ratepayersOver the last week as chair of HDRRAI, Ihave attended two very important meet-ings that could affect all ratepayers inthe District and Region (HDC extra-ordinary meeting on Wednesday even-ing and Thursday an economic Growthand Development Business luncheon).

We have to ask what the hell’s goingon in Horowhenua.

Things backfired on the HDC moneygrab re zoning plan and they had toinstitute a new rates remission policy toquell the uprising from the affectedratepayers.

This new Rate’s Remissions policywas unanimously supported by the ninecouncillors present and the mayor withconditions that these rural farmers orresidents don’t expand or diversify theirexisting farming practices.

Now the HDC is supporting a Gov-ernment plan to look at how we canincrease production from our Districtand Region.

Thank God this is only a plan to“study regional economy” and focus ongrowth rate.

It looks like a positive move, or is itjust National Party campaigning?

The Horowhenua and the widerregional districts have been, for manyyears, producing horticulture, meat andmilk products without much increase ingrowth or population and finding itdifficult to maintain our Region’senvironmental obligations.

Now the Ministers of EconomicDevelopment and Primary Industrieshave come up with this 10 year plan toquadruple our region’s exports.

However, all this is going to do is putmore pressure on the A grade soils andour environment.

Yes, any study is a good idea. But it’sgoing to cost the ratepayer more moneyin the Council’s Economic Developmentbudget.

Don’t we all pay enough in Counciland Regional Rates now without theGovernment wanting us to pay more?

LVN160714pjfexhibition

FANTASTIC: Norm Behrent admires some of the artwork on display by local artistKerry Wales.

Local artist showswork at Te TakereBy PETER FRANKLIN

Local artist Kerry Waleshas a stunning exhibition, consisting of 32 paintings, currently on at Te Takere.

The exhibition on thelower floor is attracting alarge number of admirersand is a must-see for allart lovers and aspiringartists.

Mr Wales’ paintingscapture his deep love ofthe natural beauty ofrural New Zealand and itswildlife.

He loves the humour tobe found in the gleam of ahare’s eye, the cockystance of a young magpie, the comic shape at the endof a spoonbill’s beak.

In the tradition of theold masters, Mr Wales can

turn his hand to paintinganything, fromlandscapes to portraits. His technique is so finethat it almost feels likeyou could walk into hispainting of a street inVenice.

His bush and riverscenes remind you that, despite the humdrum ofour daily lives, it’s abeautiful world out therejust waiting to be exploredon your next day off.

As a young artist, MrWales lived in Italy for anumber of years andstudied art at the BreraAcademy.

He now has a studio inLevin at 217/A OxfordStreet (two doors north ofthe BNZ) which is open tothe public every Tuesday

from 9.30am to 3.30pm.Mr Wales has recently

started teaching oilpainting to those whohave always wanted togive it a go. He has fourclasses per week with upto four students in eachclass.

There are a few placesleft for either completebeginners who wouldlike to try it out orstudents who alreadyhave some experience.

Mr Wales has a motto— it’s never too late tobecome what you alwayswanted to be.

If you have always hada secret desire to be an oilpainter, you have a greatopportunity to learnfrom a master bypainting alongside him.

Playwrights need more supportHorowhenua appears to bea hive of live amateurtheatre with three activetheatre groups putting onregular performancesthroughout the year.

In recent years FoxtonLittle Theatre, Levin LittleTheatre and the LevinPerforming Arts Societyhave cemented their placein the annual Globeawards, being recognisedin a wide range ofcategories, including best

New Zealand plays, bestmale and female leads andsupporting actors.

Even the colleges haveexcelled in their stageperformance, challengingsecondary schools fromaround the country in veryintense stage competitions.

However, while thetheatres go from strength tostrength, local playwrightsstill struggle to get theirwork on stage.

Multiple award-winning

playwright ValerieFranklin said it wasfrustrating at times thatlocal theatres reject playsthat are taken up byanother venue and wellreceived by the audience.

She believes thatamateur theatre is a goodavenue for newplaywrights, and theyneed the support from thetheatre groups as they, themselves need thesupport from the public.

Fair puts toy dogs in spotlight

LVN160714pjfmolly

MIGHTY MOLLY: She may be small but she is big on character.

Do you like small dogs or justwonder what they are all about?

Come and meet them and talkto the exhibitors and breeders andwatch 110 of them strut their stufffor judges at the Toy Dog Fair atthe Events Centre, Victoria Street,Levin this Saturday and Sunday.

Every breed was created for areason and the companion dogsare no exception. Their job thesedays is to keep people company, perhaps the most important worka dog can do, but they also providemany benefits over larger dogs.

They can adapt to a smallerspace and most need less exercisethan the larger dog breeds. Theytend to shed less, eat andeliminate less, and arelightweight, making them easy topick up and travel with. Manyaccommodation places will accepta small dog but not a larger one.

Some are miniaturisedversions of working dogs, andsome were created solely asbeautiful lap dogs.

Without exception, they are alldog.

The tiniest of them have noidea that they aren't as big orstrong as other dogs, and theyhave the heart and courage of amastiff concealed in their smallbodies.

That's an endearing quality butit also means they need to beprotected from themselves. Oftenthey'll take on bigger dogs or even

human intruders and can easilybe injured or killed for theirtrouble.

In size they range from a tiny2kg to sturdier specimens. As agroup, they're housedogs, unsuited to living outdoors. Theirmain goal in life is to be with theirpeople, and they'll wilt if left to

themselves for long hours dayafter day.■ The Toy Dog Fair will be at theEvents Centre, Victoria Street, Levinthis Saturday and Sunday, starting9am both days

Please don’t bring along yourunvaccinated dogs and all dogsmustbe on a lead.

Crime writers get towork for good causeOxCrimesCompiled by Peter andMarkEllingham, Introduced by IanRankinAllen &Unwin, $28.99..................................................In the UK, Oxfam is one of the biggestoutlets for secondhand books. Crimestories are themost popular turnoverthere. The previous two anthologies,Ox-Tales andOxTravels, have raised over£250,000 ($491,000) to support the work ofOxfam. It is now the turn of the crimewriters. Here in New Zealand, crime stories too

dominate the secondhandmarkets.Probably likemost crime readers, andmuch as I enjoy a really good crime novel, there are very few I would keep to read asecond time. However, I would perhapsreread those by AlexanderMcCall Smith,a gentle sort of crimewriter, but more forhis whimsical style of writing than thecrime content. In his introduction toOxCrimes, Ian

Rankin states “it is a testament to thehigh regard in which Oxfam is held that somany authors of international reputesigned up toOxCrimes”.This is true. The authors read like a

Who’sWho of crimewriters.

Who else butMcCall Smith couldwrite a short storytitled: “Trouble atthe Institute for theStudy ofForgiveness”?There is an

absolute gem byFred Vargas, whichby itself is worththe price of thebook. A delightfulstory by Ian

Rankin, once again about the old and thenew; amacabre story by Stella Duffy, born in England, but brought up in NewZealand; a killer meets his just deserts byMaxim Jakubowski and 23 other stories. There is a rich variety of short storieshere. In the afterword, Mark Goldring, the

chief executive of Oxfam states: “Crimefiction has always reflected the humaninstinct to face down injustice, and thatinstinct has been at the heart of Oxfam’swork, too.”He goes on to state that their staff use

different methods but aremotivated by asimilar determination to identify anderadicate injustice. It would be hard to be anything but

positive about a book published for such agood cause. — Margaret Reilly

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

George Clooney – FromBachelor to Bethrothedby D.H. BarkleyAmazon/Kindle..................................................A rather disappointing little book, this. Ittells us what we already know— thatClooney is a ladies’ man yet one of theboys, is a talented workaholic, is liberal, generous, with tolerant andhumanitarian views, andwasmarried fora couple of years in his early 30s.

Since then he has been in a successionof relationships, most lasting from a yearor so to two or three, with a series ofbeautiful women. We learn a bit aboutthem all, which is reasonably interesting, but the rest of the book is just the author’sspeculation onwhy none of theserelationships ever graduated to anengagement— like his present one tohighly regarded Lebanese London lawyerAmal Alamuddin.Clooney fans might enjoy this.

Restoration Centre boosted by Masons

LVN090714pjfrestoration

HELP AT HAND: Levin’s Restoration Centre Trust gets helping hand from Free Masons, from left: Davey Hall (trustee), Andy Rutherford(trustee) Ryan Taylor (Free Masons lodge master) and Grant Carline (trustee).

By PETER FRANKLIN

Levin Free Masons have takenon another community projectthat will enhance Levin’sRestoration Outreach Centre.

Lodge master Ryan Taylorsaid, with the number of parentsarriving at the centre with theirchildren, it was decided toexpand the workable area. TheMasons agreed to raise fundsand build a deck on the back ofthe building.

“We see the work that isbeing done here with childrenand their families, helping them(children) make the rightdecisions in life,” Mr Taylorsaid.

The decking, once complete, will give the parents a place togo to talk among themselves, while knowing that theirchildren are safely inside.

Mr Taylor said the lodgerecognises the positive effortsbeing made by the trustees —Grant Carline, Davey Hall andAndy Rutherford.

The Restoration Centrestarted after the three trusteesexpressed their concerns to eachother about the very poorstatistics relating to Levin’syoung people, the sixth worst inNew Zealand for violence anddrugs, and worst for teenpregnancy.

Andy Rutherford saidbetween the three of them theystarted Bootcamp, an outreachto the poorer areas of Levinwhich they ran in Levin ScoutHall on Tuesdays.

“We were getting over 100kids each week providing anevening of exercise, games andcompetitions from 5pm to 6pm,from 6pm till 6.30pm strong

dissertations, based on theBible, on how to live right andimprove their lives and theircommunities, change a life, change a destiny, change acommunity,” Mr Rutherfordsaid.

Mr Rutherford said, giventhat level of involvement andcommitment, they needed toform a trust, purchase abuilding and buy a bus so theycould do more.

Now, they use the bus for

pickups (50 to 70 children and afew parents) for Tuesday nightbootcamps 5pm to 6.30pm where60 to 80 children with a fewadults attend.

On Sunday mornings theyhold a Super Sunday School

10.30am to noon — this attractsabout 80 children and a growingnumber of parents.

The new deck will be afantastic addition that will beenjoyed by both the children andtheir parents.

When it comes to funerals many of us don’t like tothink about them.Today, more andmore people arechanging the way they think and find that it makes alot of sense to pre-arrange their funeral or join a pre-payment plan. Throughout our lives we plan for almostevery financial eventuality wemay face - pre-arrangingand pre-paying our funeral can also help to relieve yourfamily of emotional and financial worries when thetime comes.

Thinking about your own funeral plans may seem oddto some but it is on the increase as a practice. Moreandmore people are realising just how helpful it will befor a grieving and stressed family to know the funeralwishes of their loved one.

• According to the Australian Funeral DirectorsAssociation, about 15% of all funerals are nowplanned.

• In the United States, the numbers represent over 40%.

• Here, the Funeral Directors Association of NewZealand (FDANZ) advises that around 5% of funeralsare planned by people who want a say in their ownfuneral, and this is increasing each year.

Interview byDave Hare

“Simon and hisfamily will be atthe ManawatuIdeal HomeShow, showingthe public justhow easystripping canbe”Coopers Restoration wasstarted by Simon Cooperin the early eighties. Atthat time, Simon was acabinet maker with aboutique shop inWellington making andrestoring fine furniture.Disillusioned with thestandard of current paintstrippers and with a flairfor chemistry, Simon setabout making some-thing that was easy to use and actually worked. I asked him, what on earth possessed you to try and change the norm?

I was sick of not only how difficult it was to use the currentstrippers, but I thought it was a complete waste of time tohave to sand”Simon said, “Why sand when the person whomade the item sanded it in the first place”“I was determinedto make a system that was easy and made sanding obso-lete, saving my valuable time”. Simon is kiwi born and bredand as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age towork things out rather than to accept things as they are. Athigh School he developed a passion for working with woodand his love of fine furniture began.

Once Simon had developed his own brew and methods theword got out and he started to get a demand for hisamazing stripper. Today, over 30 years later, Simon’s ‘brew’

has become the‘Cooper’sStrip Club’, a completeDIY restoration system, family owned, availablethroughout NewZealand and Australia.“Cooper’s is different toconventional strippers inso many ways” Simonsays,” the main one beingthat it will strip any finishfrom any surface, whether the finish is onthe inside or outside ofyour home”“I am veryproud of it and theresults it hasachieved.”With Cooper’shaving been used onwell over 70,000 homes,Simon says, “anyone caneasily strip anythingcovered in paint orvarnish, even weather-boards and windowsbaked by the sun forover a 100 years, for thatmatter.” I asked Simon

about the current problems related to safe lead removal.“Because there is no dust or heat vapour generated”. Hesaid,” lead poisoning is not a concern”.

Simon with his wife Dorri and sons Lance and George willbe at the Manawatu Ideal Home Show, showing the publicjust how easy stripping can be. He says ”if you have aproject in mind you owe it to yourself to check out just howeasy it can be”. I asked“What about stripping all the otherstuff out there”, Simon simply says “Any paint or varnish, from any surface, such as enamel, acrylic, two pack andpowder coat paints as well as polyurethane, lacquer, varnish, shellac, oils and stains from cedar weatherboards, veneers, ply, composite boards, lino glues, metals, concrete, brick, plaster and glass”. “So it does it all then!” I said, Simonsmiles at me and says, “I wouldn’t have made it if it didn’t”.

Mitchpine Products building for future

Building good customersrelationships has been the keyfactor in Mitchpine Productsgrowth over the past fiveyears.

To ensure they have thetechnology in place to main-tain that growth, the companyhave moved into their newadministration office, built inthe later part of 2013.

The company expectsgrowth to continue and thenew office complex has beendesigned to be one step ahead, allowing better orderprocessing.

The new office complex isthe fourth the company havehad since they started oper-ations in 1985. The originaloffice was a small caravan, work increased and so did theneed to expand the office, nowthey have the administrationspace to future-proof thegrowth.

Jan Mitchell said the pastfive years had been fantastic,to have had this sort of resultduring an economic recessionwas confirmation that theywere doing everything right.“`We have always prided our-selves on delivering the bestcustomers service possible, and building on the relation-ships with all our customers.”

Employing over 30 staffand providing the best serviceand competitive prices,Mitchpine Products are defin-itely a cut above the rest.

First of all it's a familybusiness, started by Keith

Mitchell 35 years ago.The company is run by

Grant (Butch) Mitchell, and hisson Lee, so with three genera-tions of local knowledge theyknow what they are talkingabout when it comes to sup-plying local farmers, tradesand the handyman or women.

The personal touch startswhen you arrive. You dealdirect with staff who will dojust about anything for you.

There's a big range of hand-graded posts, battens, polesand gates on site and timber injust about every size andgrade.

In fact there's over 300products on site.

For the home gardenerthere's a big range of timberfor retaining walls, fencing, sawn posts and a new range ofbollards.

It's all cut, dried and treatedon site then the company'sfleet of trucks will deliver it toyour place.

With a new mill at their 13.5hectare site just 10km north ofLevin. This mill has been speci-fically designed to cut 7.5metre lengths of timber, a rareproduct with an ever increas-ing demand.

Business is looking goodwith consistent sales across allmarkets. Mitchpine is a familyrun business with old-fashioned values on qualityand service and a hands onapproach. As the staff say,``Big enough to supply andsmall enough to care.''

Electronic stability control to become mandatory

ESC has drivers avoid losing control of their vehicle.

The New Zealand TransportAgency is welcoming theannouncement that electronicstability control (ESC) will bephased in as a mandatory featurein new and used light vehiclesentering the New Zealand fleet, starting with new vehicles fromJuly 2015.

Transport Agency RoadSafety Director Ernst Zollnersaid changes to mandate ESCwere identified as a priority inthe Government’s SaferJourneys — Road Safety Strategyto 2020.

“The Safer Journeys strategyaims to create a transport system

that is increasingly free of deathsand serious injuries by lookingacross the entire road system toimprove safety by creating saferroads and roadsides, saferspeeds, safer road use and safervehicles,” Mr Zollner said.

“Having more vehicles on ourroad equipped with ESC willgreatly reduce the risk of crashesresulting from a driver losingcontrol of the vehicle. Researchcarried out by the Ministry ofTransport and the NZ TransportAgency indicates that once ESCis mandated in New Zealand, itcould save an additional 22 lives, prevent 102 serious injuries and

prevent 400 minor injuries overthe next 20 years.”

Associate Minister ofTransport Michael Woodhouseannounced the Government’sdecision to introduce mandatoryrequirements for ESC. TheTransport Agency, inconjunction with the Ministry ofTransport, carried out publicconsultation, which ran for sixweeks in April-May this year.

Okunui Hall willbe gone butnot forgottenAn old hall is to be removed and will bereplaced by a commemorative sculpturefeaturing the names of the families wholived and worked in the area where the hallwas their community hub.

Horowhenua District Council togetherwith members of the Okunui communityare working on a project to dispose ofOkunui Hall, just south of Shannon and theinstallation of a commemorative feature, celebrating and recognising the history ofthe Okunui area.

A further project will see the legalreserve status of the underlying landremoved in order for the land to be sold inthe future, with funds to be returned to theParks and Reserves Fund for futurecommunity projects, as required by theReserves Act 1977.

Councillor Ross Campbell said theproject was exciting because when thefeature was in place people would be able toread the names of those who made up thesmall community.

Work is due to start preparing the hallfor sale and removal. This includes thedisconnection of power, thedisconnection and demolition of theseptic tank and the removal of the watersupply.

The building will then be placed forauction online.

As part of the discussions, a rich anddiverse history of the hall and its role inthe Okunui Community has been heard.

Capturing this unique history andcelebrating its once critical role in thecommunity has seen the development ofthe commemorative feature.

The feature seeks to capture the localfamilies of Okunui and the area’s richflax history.

The cost of the commemorative featurewill be paid for from the proceeds of thesale of the hall.

Buddies makea differenceFinding time in a busy day to be a ‘bigbuddy’ has its own special rewardsaccording to Dave Key.

“It really doesn’t take much and thekids get a lot out of having a malearound to talk to and spend ‘bloke’ timewith,” he said.

“I really believe the big buddyprogramme benefits young males somuch.”

Earlier this year Big Buddy launcheda new foundation aimed at securingfunding for the continued mentoring ofthe nation’s fatherless boys so that theyhave good role models to guide theminto adulthood with true self-worth,purpose and meaning.

The Big Buddy Foundation willultimately provide a mechanism toguarantee the independent future of theBig Buddy programme, and to allowfinancial stability for its nationalgrowth, says Big Buddy Foundationchairman, Jeff Meltzer.

“The Foundation will also ensurethat the values of Big Buddy can bemaintained independently, regardlessof changing investment, supportcriteria and capability of the funders,”he said.

The priority of the funding will be tosupport core activities and expand thenumber of branches to areas wherethere is a clear and established need.

The long-term goal is for returnsfrom the foundation to provide themajority of operational funding for BigBuddy, underpinning its financialstability and increasing the reach of theorganisation.

The foundation has VC recipientWillie Apiata among its supporters. As arole model, he inspires many of us forthe courage and bravery he hasdemonstrated throughout his lifeincluding growing up without a father, says Meltzer.

Big Buddy mentoring works on thesimple philosophy that boys need goodmale role models in their lives tobecome good men.

PRESCHOOL

What makes a good preschool?

But above all, trust your instincts: What was the atmosphere like? What were the staff like? How did they treat your child? Your firstimpressions are extremely important.

Here are some questionsworth considering whenvisiting preschools in yourneighbourhood:• How many staff members are

there per child? The more, thebetter.

• How high is staff turnover?A low turnover can be an

indication that the staff arehappy.

• Are staff trained in earlychildhood education; do theyhave specialist skills?

• What are the surroundingslike, indoors and out?

• Do I, as a parent, have anyinfluence, and how?

Introduced species mess with natureDiggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

HOW much difference would one butterfly make if prevented from living and dying as it originally did?

‘The early settlers inNew Zealand

introduced a wholerange of plants, insects

and animals fromEngland because theywanted to make NewZealandmore like

England.’

Many years ago I read a sciencefiction story about a couple whoinvented a time machine andtraveled back to prehistoric time.

While in the past, a large, beautiful butterfly fluttered byand they caught it as a specimen. When they traveled back to theirown time, the world had changedgreatly, different government, different weather conditions, different species etc. How muchdifference would one butterflymake if prevented from livingand dying as it originally did?

Mankind is the problem, messing with nature and thenatural order of things for eithergreed or their own ego.

For instance the early settlersin New Zealand introduced awhole range of plants, insectsand animals from Englandbecause they wanted to makeNew Zealand more like England.

Rabbits, hares, gorse, hedgehogs, numerous birds, deeretc.

Some have adapted to ourconditions and not caused toomany problems where otherintroductions have become acurse. Rabbits for instance haveno natural predictors in NewZealand and our pastures andcrops suit their ability to breedmassive populations, destroyingfarms.

Even when the settlers cutand burned native bush to createpaddocks the grass plantedbecame a massive food source forthe native grass grub and porinacaterpillar making real problemsfor gardeners and farmers eversince.

Likely the natural enemy of

the two natives would haveincluded moa and kiwi alongwith other native birds. Thescales of balance disappearedwith fewer native birds forcontrol and massive numbers ofthe pests.

If we take a plant out of itsnatural habitat where it iscontrolled by climate andpredators and plant it in anenvironment which it can thrivewith no natural controls, we arecreating a noxious weed.

Ecological systems haveevolved over thousands of years, all with their balance andcounter balances but we as aspecies can in no time at all

disrupt the natural order ofthings and cause immenseproblems for hundreds of yearsto come.

This is why we now have far

stricter controls on our borderswith Bio-security.

If a predator insect or abacteria is going to be introducedto control an introduced pest

problem, a lot of research is doneto find out if beneficial life formswill be unduly affected as well.

M is for magical machines

BMW has upgraded its Motorsport range.

By COLIN SMITH

Among the colour choices for the newBMW M3 and M4 are Silverstone,Austin Yellow, Sakhir Orange and

Yas Marina Blue. The Formula 1-flavoured palette is one

more reminder that M stands forMotorsport and can only be worn by themost highly developed of BMWs whichcombine race track capability witheveryday usability.

M has powered back into the spotlightwith the arrival of the M3 and M4 siblings. The big news for the fifth generation is ashift to turbocharged six-cylinder power forcars which have a 28-year bloodline of high-revving four-cylinder, six-cylinder and V8naturally aspirated engines.

The M cars also get caught in the recentreshuffle of BMW model namingconvention. BMWs newly orderednumbering system, with odd numbers formainstream bodystyles and even numbersfor coupe and convertible style cars, makessense until you get to these M cars.

Two doors have been a constant sincethe M3 launched in 1986 while four doorshave been an on-and-off-again part of theM3 story — offered in second, fourth andnow fifth generation cars.

It could take enthusiasts some time toadjust to M4 as the new designation for thetwo-door bodystyle which has the unbrokenpedigree.

BMW NZ launched the latest M duo lastweek. The cars share every technical andequipment specification with a smallweight advantage in favour of the M4.

The M engineers have developed thehighest output version of the BMWs 3.0-litrein-line six-cylinder with twin turbos and allof the strengthened componentry, lighterrotating parts and improved coolingcapability required to dial up 317kW from5500-7300rpm and a muscular 550Nm oftorque between 1850-5500rpm.

Twin mono-scroll turbochargers, directinjection and a 10.2:1 compression ratiomean a very different style of powerdelivery from the 4.0-litre V8 whichpowered the previous M3. Maximum powerincreases only slightly but the torqueincrease is a substantial 40 per cent on thepeak figure and even more at lower enginespeeds.

Running at just 1850rpm, the turbo sixalready has its 550Nm peak torque availableor roughly double what the V8 could offer.

During wet weather track sessions atlast week’s M launch, BMW’s drivinginstructors were keen to impress that usingthe third gear thrust out of the slow corners— and even experimenting with fourth gear— was the way to find effortless responseand also keep the car pointed straightwithout placing complete reliance on thetraction and stability electronics.

The M engine goes most of the waytoward duplicating the high-revvingcharacter of the previous naturallyaspirated units.

By synthesizing the engine note whenSport Plus mode is selected there’s a throatysix-cylinder growl to accompanyacceleration that, traction allowing, willdespatch 0-100km/h in 4.1secs.

For the Kiwi market the secondgeneration of the M dual clutch seven-speedtransmission is standard with steeringwheel paddle shift and driver adjustableshift programme selection. All that torquemeans fifth gear is directly driven withsixth and seventh gears overdriven.

Helping to deliver all that musclethrough the rear wheels is the Active MDifferential.

The influence of this electronicallycontrolled multi-plate clutch limited slipdifferential could be felt at work in low-

speed manoeuvres on a drenched HamptonDowns skid pan exercise.

Out on the highway the prime appeal ofthe M cars is the direct, informativesteering feel, the sure-footed turn-in andcornering grip of the Michelin tyres and theeffortless response that comes with just alight increase in throttle opening.

Weight-saving is an important part ofthe M cars and a carbon fibre roof isstandard, saving 5kg for the M4 and 6kg onthe M3. The lightweight carbon fibrereinforced propshaft saves 5kg and thereare further savings in the bodyshellconstruction and suspension componentswhile the M4 bootlid is made from carbonfibre.

It adds up to a 63kg weight saving overthe previous model and the M4 is 23kglighter than the M3.

Some drivers believe the weight makesa difference between the way the two carsdrive but a more obvious separationbetween sedan and coupe is the lowerseating position and slight reduction inheadroom behind the wheel of the M4.

BMW New Zealand is keen to tell avalue story for these new M cars, pointingout the $159,900 starting point for the M3 isa 1 per cent increase while the enhancedspecification delivers nearly $20,000 ofadditional equipment.

The M4 price is $169,900 with the carsharing the specification to the M3 withthe sole addition of the Adaptive LEDheadlight system for the M4. The M3 hasbi-xenon headlights with the anti-glareheadlamp beam assist system and the LEDlights are a $2000 option.

The main added value ingredients ofthe standard specification include the7-speed dual-clutch transmission — a six-speed manual is now listed as a no-costoption — along with a move to 19-inchferric-grey alloy wheels and MichelinSuperSport tyres.

Adaptive M suspension system withComfort, Sport and Sport Plus settings andBMW’s head-up display with unique Mfeatures including gear display, shiftindicator and tachometer are also new tothe standard equipment list.

The carbonfibre roof is new for thesedan.

Highlights of the standard equipmentacross M3 and M4 are a rear view camera,Harmon Kardon 16-speaker/600-watt audiosystem and 8.8-inch display withprofessional navigation and with 20GBhard drive storage. Push button enginestart, alarm system, cruise control withbraking function, rain sensor wipers and

LED rear lights are standard.Visually the M cars have plenty of

differentiation from standard BMW modelswith a kidney grille insert, lower frontapron with three enlarged air intakes, sharper aerodynamic detailing and a powerdome bonnet which creates the space forthe intercooler.

The carbon roof, M door mirrors andmore aggressive rocker panels are furtherhighlights and the rear of the car features arear diffuser with four tailpipes. The M3has a subtle bootlid Gurney lip and the M4has the spoiler shape fully integrated intothe carbon fibre bootlid.

The cabin highlights are an anthraciteroofliner, carbon fibre trim inserts and theheated and electric adjustable sports seatswhile the multi-function M leather steeringwheel includes gear shift paddles.

The option list for both M cars includes aSurround View Camera ($1800), LaneChange Warning System ($1300), DrivingAssistant Lane Departure Warning andCity Braking function ($1300), ParkingAssistant ($950) and TV function ($3500).

A sunroof is a no-cost option but itdeletes the carbon roof while woodgrain oraluminium interior trims can replace thecarbon fibre at no cost.

There are eight exterior colours — twowhites, a black and dark grey being theadditions to the quartet of Grand Prixvenue colours — and also four interiorleather choices for the new M cars.

Once again there will be a open top Mexperience with the M4 Convertible, featuring a folding hardtop roof, being thethird bodystyle option to complete the latestM car lineup.

It was almost a case of deja vu for Premierrugby teams Athletic and Waikanae, withjust one point separating the teams at thefinal whistle.

Facing off on Saturday at PlayfordPark, the teams made each other workhard for every point.

The Levin boys in blue appliedpressure from the start, keeping the redand black jerseys firmly back in their ownhalf for the first 15 minutes. Athleticmissed a penalty early on but were quickto take advantage of a fumbled ball byWaikanae to score their first try, that wasconverted.

Leading 7-0, Athletic continued to takethe game to Waikanae and a good defenceheld off Waikanae for a time. However, theKapiti team came back with two tries anda conversion to lead 12-7. Undaunted,Athletic pushed a try over the line, notconverted, to level the game at 12-all at thehalftime whistle.

The scoreboard continued to swingback and forth in the second half.

Athletic notched up three points from apenalty kick to take an early lead but a tryfrom Waikanae saw them leapfrog aheadby two points.

In a thrilling finish a second penaltykick from Athletic nudged them pastWaikanae by one point, to take the finalscore to 18-17.

Prop Chris Braddock and winger ScottAnderson scored Athletic’s tries, whilehalfback Aaron Taiapa kicked one penaltyand a conversion and first-five MattEaston the second penalty.

Athletic manager Carwyn Millard saidit was a good battle on both sides. “It wasthe exact same score we beat Waikanae byin our second round meeting,” he said.

“We dominated the scrums for sure butour lineouts were 50/50. The wet weathermade ball handling difficult and both

teams struggled.”He admitted Waikanae dropping the

ball in Athletic’s red zone at one pointduring the game gave the team “somebreathing space”.

Athletic have kept their grip on fourthplace on the points table but had alreadyput in the hard yards from previousmatches to secure their place in thesemifinals.

Millard said the team went out to playhard and give it everything they had.“We needed to make sure we were intune for our semifinal. The mood in thechanging sheds after the game was

fantastic so, as far as the mental side of thegame goes, it’s definitely given us a boost. We’ve got a battle [ahead].”

Athletic will meet Shannon at ShannonDomain in the semifinals this Saturday.
