MONEY MATTERS

Choosing a financial advisorwith BERNARD LONG

When looking for a financial adviser toassist you with investing, there are some

fundamental things to look for.Are they part of a larger organisation

employing sound research with aconsistent investment process subject toannual practice audit?

And, of course, are they qualified? These attributes are ‘‘the ticket to the

dance’’; you would expect any authorisedfinancial adviser to be equipped to a highstandard. You can find this detail and a lotof other information about an adviser andtheir practice in their Adviser BusinessStatement (ABS). We are required by lawto produce and maintain an ABS,primarily for the Financial MarketsAuthority but you can ask for a copy.

I suggest the adviser’s practicephilosophy and values are as important.Mine can be summarised in one word:

stewardship. Ibelieve asinvestors we havea stewardshipresponsibility toprudently

maintain and grow the wealth we haveaccumulated or been given. As an adviserI am in turn charged with thisstewardship responsibility by my clients.Clients and advisers with similar valuesseem to find one another and this tends toresult in a harmonious relationship.

This is not always so. Take Ross AssetManagement.

Greed appears to be philosophy helduppermost by both adviser and clients, fedby impossible returns and so-calledprivileged access.

The outcome of this was never going tobe good and as in any professionalrelationship it could be said the clientsand adviser deserved each other.

YOUR VIEWS

Electricity pricesPeriodically the print media highlight thecost of electricity to the New ZealandConsumer and the problems encountered bylow income families in paying the everincreasing family electricity account.

Despite Consumer negativity towardselectric supply companies, chief executivesalaries and bonus payments continue on anannual basis. A recent example is ContactEnergy’s chief executive’s pay packagewhich has been reported at being worth$1.58 million (June 2013), the figure havingincreased by almost $280,000 orapproximately 20 per cent on the previousyear. The total salary equals around $30,440over an average working week.

The Contact Energy’s chief executive’ssalary details follow a 2012 salary package of$1.49m paid to the chief executive of MightyRiver Power with an additional payment of$500,000 associated with the first financialyear as a listed company.

In an endeavour to either reduce orcontrol the cost of electricity to the NewZealand domestic consumer, possibly theCommerce Commission, with the support ofthe particular Government Department andthe Minister in Charge, could apply pressureon the various electricity companies to placea cap on executive staff salaries anddirectors fees.

Cancer SocietyWe would like to take this opportunity torespond to recent correspondence in yourpaper that stated that the local cancersociety was not adequately serving thecommunity of Horowhenua.

This statement was made in relation toour local centre not being able to providespecific services, namely spot-checks andprostate cancer tests. Neither of these twoservices are endorsed by the Cancer Societydue to the lack of scientific evidencesupporting their practice. Random spotchecks do not reduce the risk of developing apotentially life-threatening skin cancer andcan in fact encourage people to becomecomplacent about spots that may develop

after such a check. We recommend thateveryone be aware of what their skinnormally looks like and, if they notice anychanges, see their GP for advice.

Regarding prostate cancer testing theissue is more complex. There is growingevidence that offering random screeningblood tests, without any discussion with atrained medical adviser, can lead to out-comes that are not necessarily in theperson’s best interests.

Prostate cancer is a significant issue formen and so requires more advice than canbe offered by staff in a shopping mall. Thedecision to test is not straightforward and isbest made in consultation with a doctor. TheCancer Society has always put the peoplefirst and where the evidence suggests thatcertain actions may cause more harm thangood, it will not routinely support them.

The society takes its role in the commun-ity very seriously. We have a local presencein Levin, with Winchester House providinga local place people can go to get informationand access to help. We also provide a freetransport service for cancer patients from allover Horowhenua to help them get to theirmedical appointments in Palmerston North. We have a local field officer that worksclosely with the individuals and familiesaffected by cancer. There are other serviceswe provide, but everything we do has to bein the best interests of the people we serve.

Mayoral powersFurther to David Thomson’s letter of Octo-ber 6 regarding the new powers that theHorowhenua District Council Mayor hasbeen endowed with on October 12 as per theLocal Government Act 2002 amendment of2013. Under the new changes, the Mayor isable to appoint the deputy mayor anddetermine the structure of committees andappoint committee chairs — rememberingthat the Foxton Community Board is notlegally a committee of council.

The mayor is also responsible for drivingthe setting of major plans and budgets, including the long-term and annual plans,

but he will also be more individuallyaccountable for the decisions he makes andthe decisions that those committees make.

Given that it is our money that is beingspent why is it that he still feels the need tohold closed door meetings, excluding thepublic from hearing or seeing the Mayor andCouncillors in action?

Noting also that 1080 votes for Cr MichaelFeyen for the Foxton Community Boardwere usurped with the appointment of CrRoss Brannigan to that board. Our sym-pathy goes out to Cr Brannigan as, throughno fault of his own, he will forever be seen asa cuckoo in the nest.

Cr Feyen on the other hand can becomforted that he has in effect a total of 2111votes as evidence of the combined FoxtonCommunity Board and Kere Kere Wardsupport. Democracy is therefore perceivedas a delicate flower but let us never forgetthat its roots run deep.

CHRISTINA PATONFoxton Beach

Board appointmentObviously voters’ wishes do not count.

As far as I understand it, one of theelected members of the Horowhenua Dis-trict Council’s Kere Kere ward is appointedas the council representative on the FoxtonCommunity Board.

The Foxton voters clearly wantedMichael Feyen as their representative on theFoxton Community Board (second highestnumber of votes received), but as Mr Feyenwas also elected as a councillor he could not, according to Section 88A of the LocalElectoral Act, be a member of the board.

However, I would have thought that thewishes of the 1080 voters, whose vote waswasted, could have been placated by appoint-ing Mr Feyen as the council representativeon the community board, especially as nomention was made of Section 88A on anyinformation supplied prior to the election.

Why was Ross Brannigan given theappointment? Does he perhaps bring some-thing to the Foxton community which thevoters are unaware of? Or do the wishes of1080 mere voters not count for anything?

DARKEST HOUR: Maz (Lucy Lever) comforts her dad Cam(Mark Clare) as events bode ill for the speedway’s survival.

PICTURE: ROB MILDON

Stocks and song a winning mixTHEATRE PREVIEWStockcars: TheMusicalCentrepoint Theatre,Palmerston NorthOpens tomorrowWritten by John Lepper andSimon FerryPreview by RobMildon

Long-time theatregoers mightthink they’ve seen it all, butCentrepoint Theatre isprepared to bet you’ve neverseen a musical about stockcars. Now you’ll get to add eventhat to your experience, asStockcars: The Musical openstomorrow night.

Mark Clare plays Cam, aformer stockcar driver whosebest mate stabbed him in theback on the track. Nowrunning the local tyre shop,he’s battling to save theracetrack from the designs ofbig business.

Not having been a bigstockcars man, Clare went tothe first race meet of the seasonto absorb the atmosphere.

‘‘It seems like everybody inthe family is involved in it. It’sa hugely social kind of thing. They’ve really got passion butit’s also really stoic,’’ he said. All this has to be somehowexpressed on stage. ‘‘The mainthing is showing howimportant the speedway is.’’

You can’t live in PalmerstonNorth and not notice thespeedway. Stockcars: TheMusical, written by old Palmyhands John Lepper and SimonFerry, is as much a love letterto the city as it is a drama. It’s

part of John Pheloung’s job, asone of the two Balladeers, to setthat scene, and it’s involved afair bit of research into localculture.

‘‘There are jokes aboutHighbury and Bunnythorpe,’’he says. It’s been really

important to get the feel of itright: the digs are made withlove.

‘‘They’re jokes told aboutPalmerston by Palmerstonpeople, rather than byAuckland people.’’

The show explores classic

Kiwi themes of conflictbetween old mates in smalltowns, but it wouldn’t bestockcars if there wasn’t afamily aspect to it as well. Camgets to live his old lifevicariously through his racingdaughter Maz.

‘‘He just thinks this is thegreatest thing and he’s givinghis daughter a real chance atmoney and success,’’ saysClare. But she might berealising that there’s more tolife than fast cars and enginegrease.

‘‘It’s a bit of conflict forher.’’

The songs are tailored tomatch the stockcars culture; ifyou like the music they play atthe speedway, you’ll love these, reckons Pheloung.

‘‘This is about as close to arock-band musical as you canget. We just use acousticguitars — it’s pretty strippeddown. It’s much more our styleof music that way. Simplesongs, direct, in the vein ofBruce Springsteen.’’

The Balladeers sing to movethe plot forward and perhapspoke a little fun at thecharacters — and the audience. But for Cam, his friends andhis rivals, singing is a way toexpress something they can’totherwise.

‘‘It’s for when you’vereached a point where dialoguewon’t do it anymore,’’ saysClare.

■ Stockcars: The Musical openstomorrow at 8pm and runs untilDecember 14. For times andbooking information, callCentrepoint Theatre on (06)354-5740.

Revamp of CouncilCommunicationsAs part of Horowhenua District Council’swider Communications review, the Com-munity Connection magazine will be dis-tributed next week in a new format, witha new look, as a pullout supplement withthe Horowhenua Chronicle.

When new chief executive DavidClapperton filled the role in July he setout a new direction for council’s com-munications. This included a staffingrestructure and a review of both Com-munity Connection and ElderBerries, council’s magazine for the over 50s.

‘‘By printing and distributing Com-munity Connection within the Horo-whenua Chronicle as a monthly pullout,we are ensuring that all households inHorowhenua are receiving up to datenews and notices from council, whilekeeping costs low,’’ said Mr Clapperton.

‘‘Community Connection will beprinted on white newsprint as a four-pagepull out, and will complement informa-tion produced on our website andthrough other communication streams.’’

Readers will also notice a change toElderBerries, with future copies beingprinted on matte paper. This change wasin response to reader feedback, with ahigh-gloss paper making legibility moredifficult for some readers.

From 2014, ElderBerries will alsobecome a seasonal publication, promot-ing upcoming events as well aspublicising initiatives and projects fromaround the region.

Mr Clapperton is also pleased tobe able to announce the appointmentof Kelvin Teixeira to the media andpublications officer position at council.

‘‘Kelvin is returning to Horowhenuafrom a current role as communicationsmanager at Age Concern New Zealand, and we are confident Kelvin brings withhim an excellent skill set that willcomplement the needs of council movingforward,’’ said Mr Clapperton.

Mr Teixeira will start at council onMonday November 25.

Huge Demand for Military Medals

Currently, throughout the world there is a very bigdemand by collectors for Military Medals. These

cover all wars right through from the New Zealand LandWars and the Boer War, to the First and Second WorldWars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. NewZealand Servicemen and Women first served overseasin the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and theMilitary Medals awarded for this service are neededby the buyers, as are any other Medals from early NewZealand and the New Zealand Wars.

General service medals from both the First andSecond World Wars will also be purchased, but as can beimagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers.“If a group of medals has any special award for braverysuch as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross orother medals for Distinguished Conduct or MeritoriousService, these can add great value to a group” stated MrTony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd.“Many families have old medals, some dating back toearly Imperial days, that they are not sure what to dowith. We will be happy to look at any Military Medalswhatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.

Early New Zealand Banknotes datedbefore 1932 are currently fetching

big money! This is according to MrTonyGrant, author of the John Bertrand NewZealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue.Mr Grant is in Levin and Foxton nextTuesday only on a buying trip for JohnBertrand (Collectables) Ltd and wouldbe very keen to see any of these issues.“We will pay at least $300 for anyundamaged Ten Shilling or One Pound

banknote from a New Zealand tradingbank dated 1932 or before.

Denominations of five pounds andhigher would be worth from $700. “Anybanknote dated prior to 1900 would beworth at least $1000” said Mr Grant.

Also purchased are any Reserve Bankof New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseasbanknotes prior to the 1950’s are alsowanted.

Dire weather leading up to Foxton’sSpring Fling perhaps enticed people tocome out and enjoy the day.

Whatever the reason, Main Streetwas humming. Smells of hot chips andhot dogs wafting down the streetreminiscent of the good old Spring Flingdays. Returning to the original nameandMain Street venue has definitelypaid off. Die hard ‘Fling’ goers weredelighted to have the fete feeling return. The stalls were interesting and busy, the food was stodgy just as it should beand the talent quest was proof NewZealand’s got it. It may have taken afew years to get it right but FoxtonTourist and Development Associationdeserve a pat on the back.

‘‘The Spring Fling used to be fundedby local businesses,’’ said FoxtonTourist and Development Associationpresident Paul Andrews.

‘‘The Foxton Tourist andDevelopment Association finance thewhole event now through grants, stallholders fees and gate takings.’’

Anymoney left over goes back to thecommunity for projects such as the 120hanging baskets which brightenMainStreet.
