Re Students’ Vision (letters,May 21). The principal of OhauSchool, quite rightly is to beproud of her students and hope-fully the students will grow upand continue to participate inLocal Government, not becausethey want something from theCouncil, but because they havea real interest in communityaffairs. Yes, the council cham-ber may have been temporarilyfilled on this occasion by par-ents or grandparents, thatnormally happens when anorganisation wants the councilto put their hand in the rate-payers pocket to pay for a petproject.

Regrettably it was a shamethat the same amount ofenthusiasm and support wasnot given to Submission No. 178to make the road to the beachbush walkway safer by reducingthe speed limit and the widen-ing of the road. It’s diabolicalthat the Council has no avail-able funding to make the roadsafer but can find funds to do thebush walkway.

The principal should havethought twice before makingderogatory remarks about theprevious speaker.

The speaker the principalrefers to in her letter is one ofthe few residents in Horo-whenua who regularly standsup for every ratepayer/residentand the preservation of theenvironment, and is normally

treated with disdain by ourcommunity leaders. If moreOhau residents regularly wereattenders or speakers at councilmeetings they would observethe lack of decorum and respectgiven to regular speakers.

Rather than writing letters tothe editor the principal wouldbe better educating local politicsand protection of the environ-ment to her students, not justgiving them accolades for doingsomething that will only benefitthemselves.

Stuart StA complaint of a broken foot-path in Stuart St, Levin hasresulted in all berm trees felled, new footpaths and drive run-upscompletely redone, and also newstreet lighting. None of theabove work was planned orfunds allocated in the last year’sAnnual Plan budget.

But it does not end there;three days after the last piece ofconcrete was laid the engineerswere there to inspect the workand lo and behold the oneproblem that the street did havehad not been addressed (Flood-ing on the corner into ArgyleStreet) so, their best remedy wasto get out the cans of spray-paintto show the next lot of workerswhere to cut the brand newconcrete.

The total revamp of StuartStreet is still ongoing — watchthat space. A fantastic precedentfor all other problems to beremedied. It’s now looking goodfor Lindsay Road. Anyone elsegot a problem that they wantsorted out?

KidnappingOver the past month theReligion of Peace has loomedlarge in international newsagain, with the kidnapping ofhundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls to sell as slaves or be forcedinto marriages with forcedconversions to Islam in obedi-ence to the Koran.

Now we have a real twist injustice in Sudan. MeriamIbrahim, was born to a Muslimfather, raised by her Christianmother and she married aChristian. She is pregnant, hasbeen in prison since February, and told to renounce Christian-

ity or face death. According toIslamic law (Sharia) a Muslimcan only be put to death forthree reasons, two of which shehas allegedly violated, commit-ting adultery and leaving Islam.

As a technical apostate she isworthy of death; Sharia offersno other alternative. Becauseshe is married to a Christianman, which Sharia does notrecognise, she is, in theirtwisted minds, committingadultery. A Muslim man maymarry a Muslim, a Christian ora Jew (all the children born tothem are legally consideredMuslim, even if they rejectIslam), but a Muslim womancan only marry a Muslim man;she has no other choice.

The judge in Sudan gave herthree days to revert to Islam, sherefused. The verdict is that afterthe baby is born she will receive100 lashes, then after the baby isweaned she will be hung todeath. The father will not beallowed the child for it also mustbe raised Muslim.

We take for granted in ourcountry the freedom to choosewhat we believe, who we marryand what we can say, includingcriticising a twisted barbariclaw code. These are fundamen-tal freedoms, and fundamen-tally denied to all who liveunder Sharia, especially non-Muslims. We don’t want it here.

Chris proud to help othersLVN280514splchris-henry

PRIDE CONTENDER:Chris Henry has beennominated for hiscommunity spirit, that hashelped young peopleachieve and a familysettle into a new country.

Pride of NZ is a means of findingthose special people who seldomcome forward to beacknowledged for the work theydo behind the scenes thatbenefits the community.

Former police officer ChrisHenry is one of those people.

Through his good nature hecontinues to make a positiveimpact on the lives of youngpeople in Horowhenua and hasbeen nominated in the Pride ofNZ awards.

Chris grew up with a scoutingbackground, something he holdsclose to his heart.

He says the principles ofscouting have, to a large degree, made him the person he is today, and encourage him to carry onpassing on what he has learntover the years to young people, guiding them to make gooddecisions in life.

After spending 10 years withthe police, finishing his servicein Kapiti, he decided to move thefamily to Manakau and a rurallifestyle.

Chris got his two childreninto Kotokua scout group andbecame a scout leader.

But it is not just hisinvolvement with scouts thatsingled Chris out as one of thosespecial community-mindedpeople, he has made a significantimpact on a family that moved toa new country, not knowinganyone and feeling isolated.

The family of three came fromSouth Africa. Being in a foreigncountry, without any family orfriends to assist them, they werefinding it hard.

They were introduced to thescouts. Chris made them feel likepart of a family and their sonovercame many obstacles in life

due to Chris’ understandingnature and leadership.

Over a relatively short time, they managed to gain a widercircle of acquaintances andfriends as Chris involved themwith events in the community.

The family believe thatthrough Chris’ influence theirson has excelled. He is confident, well behaved, doing wellacademically, making goodchoices and has made goodfriends.

That is one of manysignificant successes that Chrishas had over the years.

He is a firm believer that if aperson does good things, then

good things will happen to them.In his current job with New

Zealand Home Loans he has theability to make huge differencesto people. Home loans can becrippling, and put enormouspressure on parents.

‘‘I’m in a position where I canhelp people achieve what theywant without the stress, thatgives me a good feeling,’’ he said.

Chris says the greatestpleasure in life is helping others, because you do make a differenceand that is important.

‘‘To get nominated forsomething is a fantastic honour, but that is not why I getinvolved,’’ he said.

SURPRISE VISIT: Wellington Community Choir testifyto the power of song at Mangahao Power Station.

Ninety members of theWellington CommunityChoir had somethingspecial to sing about earlierthis month as theyembarked on a mystery tripto one of the oldest largepower stations in NewZealand.

The mystery trip toMangahao Power Station, near Shannon in theManawatu, was part ofWellington CommunityChoir’s annual getaway, organised by local author, investigative journalist andchoir member NickyHagar.

“Every year we organisefor the choir to go on anadventure outing where wefind interesting places tovisit on the way to a finaldestination,” he said.

“This year all choirmembers knew we wereheading to an event atRegent Theatre inPalmerston North, buteverywhere we visitedalong the way was asurprise. And the visit toMangahao Power Stationwas undoubtedly thehighlight,” he said.

While there, the group ofsingers took a guided tourof the historic four-storybuilding and concludedtheir visit by joiningtogether in harmonydirectly outside.

“To honour the place, and to publicly recognise

the opportunity we weregiven, we sang an Africansong but changed the lyricsto be about MangahaoPower Station,” Nicky said.

“The original plan wasto sing inside the building, but the incredible noise ofthe turbines would havedrowned us out. It is trulyfascinating inside and weare grateful that we got tosing at such a majesticplace at all.”

Nicky said the trip wasmade possible because ofelectricity retailer andgenerator King CountryEnergy (KCE), who own theMangahao Power Station, and station supervisor PaulRobinson.

“KCE put me in touchwith Paul, who offered tocome back from holidayespecially to open the

building for us to tour,” hesaid.

Both Paul and KCEretail business managerHelen Peacock said it was apleasure to have the choirchoose the MangahaoPower Station as itssurprise destination.

“The group was eager tolisten and learn about thestation and all its features, and they went on to enrichthe visit with theirsinging,” Paul said.

“As owners of theMangahao Power Station,KCE is thrilled to see thebuilding being used notonly for its industrialpurposes, but also for theenjoyment of the public. Wewish the choir all the bestfor the practises andperformances ahead ofthem,” Helen said.

Don’t smoke and save money. That’s the simple message a group of

Maori Horowhenua College students willbe spreading as part of the SOS — Smokeor Save — initiative launched at theLevin college this month.

The brainchild of MidCentral DistrictHealth Board Maori Health AdvisorDoug Edwards, SOS is specificallydesigned to be student-led with supportfrom MidCentral DHB and BNZ Levin, which will provide financial advice.

Mr Edwards said SOS was focused onRangatahi (Maori youth), found to bedouble the percentage of regularsmokers, compared to the generalpopulation, in the latest ASH survey.

‘‘We want our young people not tostart smoking in the first place,’’ MrEdwards said.

‘‘The whole kaupapa [purpose] isabout bringing up a new healthygeneration. For SOS to be truly effectivewe need Rangatahi generating the ideasand running the programme.

‘‘Young people need to make acommitment to something, whether it’sto smoke or to save money.’’

Year 12 student Jax Gardner-Cook,heading up the leadership group, said acompetition to win an iPhone 5C for thebest poster, song, video or otherresource, to encourage young peoplebecome smokefree, is being run topromote the programme at the college. The competition is being supported byMidCentral DHB.

‘‘I would like to see a new generationgrow up healthier,’’ said Ms Gardner-Cook.

‘‘People out there are also strugglingfinancially. When you smoke you takeaway money you could use for yourfamily and we need to push thismessage.’’

BNZ Levin manager Lesley Forwardsaid students who choose to take upsmoking needed to look at the financial

cost. ‘‘Smoking a packet of cigarettes aweek for a year is burning away $1040.Smoking a pack every day for a year, which happens in some families, is $7000that could be spent on other things,’’ shesaid.

‘‘This is a conversation young peoplecan have with their families.’’

Horowhenua College acting principalSharon Moerkerk said she was excitedabout the new programme. ‘‘It’s studentstaking control and doing what they know

works for them and the message will bemore powerful because it comes fromthem.’’

The SOS programme is planned to berolled out to other colleges and schoolsin the district later this year.

Activities give youthwork opportunitiesBy BRIARMOFFATT

SOCIAL SECTOR TRIAL UPDATE

The month began with akaleidoscope of activities, from holiday programmesand youth raves to collegeballs and the beginning ofTerm 2.

With three different holidayprogrammes on offer through the SocialSector Trial, there were plenty ofactivities for young people to take partin.

Life to the Max offered twoprogrammes.

One was a week of day trips thatincluded scuba lessons at Dive HQ, avisit to Te Papa, a wearable arts creationand fashion parade, and the ever-popularpaintball session.

The other was the Amaze Dance hip-hop programme. Dozens of participantslearnt their dance routines during theweek and then performed for a crowd atthe finale performance, held at TeTakere.

The local dance crew, Gem-In-Eye,were excited to be the tutors for thisyear’s programme.

Te Takere hosted the YouthTech 14holiday programme. Young peopleinterested in information technologywere offered a week of learning withtutors from around New Zealand who are

experts in their fields. The weekconcluded with a field trip to WetaDigital in Wellington to learn where acareer in IT could take them.

I would like to thank everyone thatwas involved in organising anddelivering these holiday programmes, including the parents and caregiverswho ensured their children wereregistered and attended each day.

Youth Connections is underway. Thisinitiative asked local business ownersand retailers, who are members of theTruant Free CBD, to assist our youngpeople to obtain their first job by offeringa minimum of one-two hours of workeach week.

Thanks to the fantastic communityspirit, the team at New World Levinstepped up to the challenge by openingthat door into the world of successfulemployment.

After a nerve-wracking first jobinterview for the applicant and acceptinga job offer, they are now working at NewWorld.

SportsWorld have also offered toemploy someone.

If there are any other businesses inthe CBD and wider community that areable to join in with this project, or wouldlike more information, please contactJess Ward at Life to the Max on (06)368-8005.

COMBINING TALENTS: Award-winning playwright and director Valerie Franklin andDrama teacher/director Samantha McLean are planning to draw the potential talentout of Horowhenua writers.

Helping to put wordsinto action on stageHorowhenua has an abundance ofuntapped talent, singers, musicians, dancers and writers, according toplaywright Valerie Franklin and directorSamantha McLean.

They are now searching for writerswho have a desire to put pen to paper andwrite a play but are unsure of how to getthe best out of their ideas.

Starting in June, Mrs Franklin andMiss McLean will be holding an eight-week script writing course at TeTakere.

Mrs Franklin says everyone has a playin their head, ‘‘what we intend to do is helpthem put that idea into a script form’’.

She said during the course, thosetaking part will be guided through theprocess of structuring the script, developing sub plots and developingcharacters.

Miss McLean says, as a director, it isessential that once she has read the script, she can see the characters in her mind andwhere they move on stage, their

expressions and the way they shoulddeliver certain lines.

She says live theatre is a wonderfulexperience, to watch people interpret andwork with direction to capture, thehumorous and serious acts.

Mrs Franklin says there is a lot more toproducing a script for international agentslike Playmarket than writing furiously ona pad, and sending it off for consideration.

Over the eight weeks, Mrs Franklin andMiss McLean will touch on many subjects, including copyrights and fee payment toAPRA for music used during theproduction, lighting, sound and venues.

‘‘Once I’ve finished writing a play andsecure a venue, I start to get excited, because I know that someone is going toturn up to auditions who is just perfect fora particular role,’’ Mrs Franklin said.

The scriptwriting course begins nextWednesday at TeTakere. For moreinformation contact Mrs Franklin on 021296 8749.

Wall St’s crookedrort exposedBy TONYVERDON

CROOKS: Michael Lewis exposes faster-than-the-eye practices that are netting highfrequency traders undeserved big bucks. PHOTO: BLOOMBERG

Flash Boys—Cracking the

Money Code byMichael

Lewis Penguin Books $50FLASH Boys is a revealing andtroubling expose of theshenanigans behind highfrequency share trading on the

United States’ Wall St.It reveals a depressing picture

suggesting the ugliest human traits ofgreed and avarice that lay behind theglobal financial crisis, still thrive at thecentre of the world's most powerfulfinancial markets.

Now controlled by computer codes toocomplex for most people to comprehend, the world's money trade is being stung bya clever few who essentially use thespeed of the system to skim off hugeprofits, ultimately paid for by Joe publicinvestor.

Author Michael Lewis knows how theinternational money markets workbecause he began his career as a traderwith international brokers SalomonBrothers. His previous books haveincluded accounts of the near-collapse ofthe markets in 2009.

Merchant banks and others in Wall Stand elsewhere developed complexsecurities based on mortgages sold topeople who could not afford them.

They sold investments based on dodgyloans which ultimately led to the globalfinancial crisis.

But lessons learned seem to have beenforgotten quickly, as a new generation ofmoney traders and bankers has used theswitch to ultra-fast electronic trading tomake billions of dollars.

The advent of broadband and satellitecommunications transformed the wayshares and other commodities are tradedthrough the New York Stock Exchangeand the various Chicago exchanges.

Lewis argues the financial marketshave changed too rapidly for our mentalpicture of individuals shouting buy andsell orders across the exchange floor toremain true to life. Now the US stockmarket trades inside black computerboxes.

He says what happens inside thoseblack boxes is so complex that few caneven understand the processes let aloneexplain them to the public.

Flat-footed government regulatorshave struggled to understand how thesystems work and those who dounderstand what happens are making somuch money they have no incentive toreveal the truth.

The whole issue of high frequencytrading, in which shares are bought andsold in nanoseconds, must be one of themost difficult and potentially boring

stories a writer could tell. But Lewis uses the story of a computer

programmer's prosecution for revealingsupposedly secret Goldman Sachscomputer code to unfold his bigger story.

Flash Boys moves quickly on to theefforts of a little-known Canadian bankerworking in Wall St to unravel themysteries of the market processes.

The group the banker, BradKatsuyama, formed spent years trying tounravel the pathways used by highfrequency traders and the role theyplayed in the markets.

Taking on some of the most powerfulinstitutions and people in the financialmarkets, the group finally formedIndependent Trading Exchange, anexchange which promises clients it cansidestep the high frequency traders andtheir mark-ups.

The IEX opened for business last year, and recent reports suggest it is thrivingand gaining clients from moretraditional trading houses.

The margins high frequency tradersmake are small but the massive size ofthe US markets mean they are makingmillions of dollars a week.

Finally, United States regulatoryauthorities are launching large-scaleinvestigations into the markets, some ofthem in the wake of the revelations inthis book.

The term ‘‘best-seller'' is over-used butappropriate here. Flash Boys sold anastonishing 135,000 copies in the USduring its first week of publication.

It is a gripping read, cleverlycombining the narrative of financialmarket outriders challenging theinstitutional market makers, some ofwhom are skimming the system for theirown benefit.

No doubt Flash Boys has been a bigseller among Wall St traders, and some ofthem will be feeling distinctlyuncomfortable about their profitableenterprises being exposed.

Budget doesn’t address big issuesFROM THE LEFT

with ROBMcCANNLabour Candidate for Otaki

Budget week has been andgone and I, for one, amunimpressed. This was apurely political set-piecedesigned to win an election, not to drive New Zealandforward, or address theunderlying issues whichaffect the wellbeing offamilies, or anunderachieving ‘Rock Star'economy.

Yes, National hasadopted Labour policy byincreasing paid parentalleave, but onlyincrementally, over manyyears and has not gone farenough.

The one laudable aspectis free GP visits for allprimary school children. That praise aside: if onlyNational would look at whythese kids need to go to thedoctor in the first place, wewould all be better off.

Yes, the budget isbalanced — if you ignorethe five-year freeze on themoney spent policing, the

‘interestfree' $375millionloan giventoAuckland'swoefullycongestedtransportsystemand the

half a billion dollarreduction for theChristchurch rebuild. If youbalanced financecompanies’ books like thisyou'd be standing in thedock awaiting sentencing.

As Labour leader DavidCunliffe said, this is a‘smoke and mirrors' budget.Where is the vision for thefuture? Where is the plan toincrease our export-driveneconomy? Where are theideas to reduce inequality?Where is the strategy toreduce unemployment? What has happened to theKiwi dream of owning yourown home?

This is the budgetwritten when you're out ofideas and desperately want

to seem family-friendly. Itlacks vision and once againcaters for National’sCabinet club mates.

Most New Zealanderssimply don’t earn enough.Last year 46 per cent of NewZealanders received no rise.

These are the samepeople who are told eachyear to tighten their belts, while the wealthy purchasetheir new cars and holidayhomes.

Too many young peopleare in low-paid andinsecure service work.Currently unemploymentfor our youth (15-24) is at13.5 per cent in Kapiti and15 per cent in theHorowhenua. Shameful.

A budget must act toredress these issues, not toembed the direction thiscountry is headed, towardsa ‘have' and ‘have not'society.

Home ownership rates— one of the clearestindicators of inequality —are the lowest in 50 yearsand falling rapidly. Labourwill once again make

housing affordable by:■ building 100,000 newaffordable homes.■ restricting offshorespeculation in our housingmarket.■ lowering interest ratesby reforming our monetarypolicy.

Where National hasgiven up on creating jobsand is comfortable with 6per cent unemployment,Labour will create betterjobs with higher wages, through:■ upgrading our monetarypolicy to stabilise the dollarand make our businessesmore competitive.■ a capital gains tax andRand D tax credits toencourage investment andinnovation, not speculation.■ fairer employment lawsand a boost to wages.

And we’ll give Kiwi kidsthe best start in life with:■ 26 weeks’ paid parentalleave.■ 25 hours a week of freeEarly Childhood Education.■ a $60 per week childallowance.

Trust under scrutiny after information leakAllegations even more seri-ous than those at the TeKohanga Reo NationalTrust have been madeagainst the Te RoopuTaurima O Manukau Trust, according to JordanWilliams, executive direc-

tor of the Taxpayers’ Union.‘‘It appears that a

whistleblower has leakedmaterial which supportallegations even more seri-ous than those at the TeKohanga Reo NationalTrust. Unfortunately, like

the Kohanga Reo, it’s hardfor the public and the mediato find out more, because ofthe secrecy of these groups.

‘‘Unlike Governmentagencies, these groups arenot required to comply withthe Official Information

Act. This means that toooften taxpayer money disap-pears into a void.’’

The only opportunity tosee even a fraction of whatreally goes on is when some-one leaks documents, asappears to be the case here.’’

Horowhenua to benefitfrom Children’s TeamHorowhenua is the first of four regions toget a Children’s Team in the next year, asa way of bringing people from varioussector groups in the community togetherto work with families to help and supportchildren.

Work will start immediately toimplement the Horowhenua Children’sTeam with an expectation that the firstreferral will be received by September 1.

A children’s team is made up ofcommunity groups and professionals, brought together by local people to workin the communities where they operate.

They are designed to be flexible so theycan respond to the needs of at-riskchildren and their families and whanau, within the setting of each community.

Horowhenua, Marlborough, Hamilton, and Clendon/Manurewa/Papakura teamswere announced in this month’s Budget, and follow the successful work of twoteams in Whangarei and Rotorua, set uplast year.

The first two teams together hadsupported more than 100 children andtheir families and whanau. Another four

regions, including Wanganui, will beestablished by June 2015.

The teams are part of a widerGovernment strategy to improve thewellbeing of New Zealand children.

Most referrals to the teams will bechildren who have been notified to Child,Youth and Family but don’t need astatutory response.

Over time, referrals are likely to beaccepted more widely from schools, hospitals GPs, social workers, and fromthe wider community.

MDHB portfolio manager for child andyouth health Barb Bradnock haswelcomed the announcement of achildren’s team in Horowhenua.

‘‘The appointment of a locallyappointed Children’s Team in the regionwill be another bonus for the work alreadybeing done and planned for the region toimprove and support vulnerablechildren,’’ she said. ‘‘I look forward to theestablishment of the team, hopefully bythe end of this year, and it being involvedand supporting Horowhenua children incoming months and years.’’

Extra care needed on roadsWith winter knocking at the doorweather conditions are creatingdangerous driving conditions. Whilesnow and flooding continues to createrisky driving conditions and close SouthIsland roads, Horowhenua is starting tofeel the beginnings of the winter chillswith frosts and icy roads.

AA spokesperson Dylan Thomsen saysit is best to stay off the roads during anyextreme weather and as conditions beginto improve it’s important for motorists tocheck the status of the roads onwww.roadwatch.co.nz before they set off.

Emergency services are urgingdrivers to de-ice their windscreen beforesetting off and to keep speeds down, assudden braking will cause the vehicle toslide.

Drivers should check the tyres on thefamily car to ensure they were roadworthy and have plenty of tread.

At this time of year the biggest causeof car crashes is drivers not driving tothe road conditions, whether they be iceon the road, heavy rain fall or high winds— all of which can make drivinghazardous.

OPTIONS: Don Hutchins, 92, is now a firm believer in considering all the options when it comes to when it comes to where he spends hisretirement years.

OPENDAYON FRIDAYWhen considering residentialoptions for your twilight years, many people immediately think‘rest homes’.

But 92-year-old Levin localDon Hutchins is now a firmbeliever in considering all theoptions.

In 2013 a fall at homeconvinced Mr Hutchins he’d haveto move into a rest home.

‘‘I thought the natural pro-gression at my age was to moveinto a rest home. But everyonekept telling me a retirementvillage would be a better option. . . and they were right!”

Now, Mr Hutchins is a hugefan of Reevedon Retirement Vil-lage, by Enliven Central.

‘‘I’m really glad I made themove. I already knew many of theother village residents here, plusthe villa is just the right size forme, it’s in Salisbury Street so it’sclose to town, and it was a greatprice.’’

He said that, while his addresschanged when he moved to theretirement village, his lifestyledidn’t.

‘‘I still do everything I didbefore I moved here, I just haveless cleaning to do!’’ he said.

‘‘I play lawn bowls in theafternoon to keep active and Iwalk to the shops becausethey’re so close. I’ve also madefriends with my neighbours aslots of them have the sameinterests as me.’’ he said.

Enliven Central’s JoannaThomson, who managesReevedon Village, explainsEnliven can provide a full rangeof services and support for olderpeople in Levin.

‘‘Enliven offers a practicalhome-help service called Com-

munity Support, as well as theReevedon Retirement Village inSalisbury Street and rest home, hospital and dementia careservices over two sites –

‘‘It’s the perfect option foranyone thinking about both thesupport they need now, and what

they might need in the future. It’salso perfect for couples whoneed different levels of support,’’she says.■ For more information about

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

Is it helpful tosterilise soil?

A question that I am often asked is aboutthe need to sterilise soil in areas where acrop is grown each year, such astomatoes or potatoes.

The reason that a number ofgardeners wish to sterilise the soil in agiven area is because they believe thatthe process will clean up pathogens(diseases) that have occurred whilegrowing the previous season’s crop.

Some gardeners go to great lengths toremove all the top soil from a plot orglasshouse and replace it with fresh topsoil. (That is a lot of work and expense.)

There are also other gardeners thathave reported to me that they havegrown their tomato plants in the samearea, year after year (one said 30-oddyears) with no problems.

Some gardeners will remove theirtomato plants before they start to go off,at the end of the season and send all thematerial to a landfill to be safe.

Others let the plants die in place andeven dig the decaying material into thesoil where they are going to grow againnext season. These gardeners feel thatthe dead material contains the elementsthat the next crop needs and therecycling of the material is of benefit.

In most cases they have healthyplants year after year outside ofseasonal problems.

Another set of gardeners doing this, will find that they have diseasesattacking the new establishing crop andwill have many failures. Somegardeners do not want to take any risksand practice high hygiene standards.

If we take a situation of a tomatoplant growing in the wild from a seeddropped in a bit of bird poo, that plantmatures and produces fruit.

The fruit rots on the ground andwhen conditions are right a bunch ofseedlings will appear all in competitionwith each other.

Many of the plants will grow tomaturity and repeat the cycle, year afteryear.

Maybe some years a disease willstrike and wipe out the plants, but likelynew seedlings will appear the followingseason and do well.

The question must be asked, how cansome gardeners grow in the same areaevery year without problems whereothers must adhere to rotation croppingover a three year cycle to avoid losses?

I believe that two aspects come intoplay one of which is very interesting andis likely not to be considered apossibility by many. It is the power ofthe mind and influence your thoughtshave over plants. If we have a gardenerthat is worried about planting histomatoes in the same spot as lastseasons crop he somehow conveys thesethoughts to the new crop and maybecreates them to fail.

Another gardener may only think ofthe positive aspects and sees in hismind’s eye the seedlings growing strongand true and the delicious tomatoes thathe will enjoy in days to come.

Do the plants pick up these thoughtsat some level we do not understand andthen grow to fullfil them?

Is this the same power that weacknowledge when we say ?thatgardener has green thumbs?

Do these green thumb gardeners havea very positive attitude about theirgardening thoughts and have formed alink with their plants to the benefit ofboth?

I feel that there is some truth in thisand the closer one feels to nature thebetter the results.

On the more practical side of things, that can be measured scientifically, wecan see two types of gardeners in theirdifferent methods.

One gardener will use chemicalherbicides, fertilisers (withoutthought), chemical sprays and waterwith chlorine in it..

The damage done by these chemicalsto the soil life is great, then pathogensrun rife having no beneficial soil life tobalance them out, or control them.

Common weed killers such asglyphosate (Roundup) linger in the soilfor 22 years (half life) and plantsgrowing in those treated areas will notbe as good as plants of the same typegrown in non treated areas.

A fact of nature is if the soil life isdiminished in an area then any ensuingcrops are more likely to have morehealth problems.

Now take the gardener who avoidsthe use of chemicals and may only usevery small amounts of man madefertilisers as a boost for a crop at theright time. The same gardener will bebuilding up their populations ofbeneficial microbes in the soil byapplying natural products of animalmanures, calcium, composts and otherminerals. Their soil teems with life, including good worm populations andthe plants growing there will be strongand more able to overcome any diseasesthat may be floating around.

Many gardeners over the years haveused a product called Jeyes Fluid or inmore recent times the same but calledNatures Mate. 80mls of this productwould be added to 10 litres of water tosaturate the soil in one square metre. Many gardeners swear by this but aproblem has arisen that the product isnot so readily available.

Many years ago a gardener fromInvercargill gave me a solution tocontrol the root disease of brassicas(Club Root) It is a simple recipe whereyou take a quarter teaspoon ofpotassium permanganate (Condy’sCrystals) and 3 dessert spoons of tablesalt into one litre of warm water todissolve, then added to a further 9 litresof water. One litre of this solution isplaced in each planting hole to reducethe damage of club root. It works well forthis problem.

Potassium permanganate is a strongoxidizing agent of which the sodiumchloride (table salt) complements itsaction in soil.

Taking the aspect of how well it helpsto control club root disease (which mostother chemicals do not) then it is alogical assumption that it can clean upother diseases or reduce their numberin the soil.

I have suggested in the past togardeners that wish to clean up areas intheir glasshouse or soil where a crop oftomatoes is to be grown, to use the aboverecipe at double the rate (half teaspoonof potassium permanganate with 6dessert spoons of salt to drench 5-10square metres of area. Leave for acouple of weeks then flood the area withwater. Once the soil has dried to moistthen apply Rok Solid, Dolomite & OceanSolids (for the minerals and calcium)Cover with a layer of animal manurebased compost. Use Mycorrcin andMagic Botanic Liquid as a soil drench tofeed and promote the beneficial soil life, after which you can plant up. A numberof garden centres have 150 grams ofPotassium Permanganate available.

If you feel the need and peace of mindto sterilise a garden area and are unableto obtain Jeyes Fluid then this would bea good alternative.

On the other hand if you have theright frame of mind, looking after yoursoil and the soil food web then naturewill work for you controlling thediseases giving you healthy plants withcrops of nutritional density.■ For gardening problems ring me at 0800466 464 (Palmerston North).

Shannon are back at the top ofthe premier table, leading byone point, after Saturday’sconvincing win againstCollege Old Boys.

Despite strong winds and athunderstorm thrown in forgood measure, Shannonproved they could play wellwhichever way the wind wasblowing.

Leading 20-0 at halftime,Shannon took the advantageplaying with the wind.

Shannon coach TonyRobinson said it could havebeen a game of two halves.

‘‘It was important weaccumulated points in thefirst half, knowing it wasgoing to be difficult playinginto the wind. But sayingthat, our guys really dug induring the second half andheld on to the ball for longperiods of time, using the ballwisely.’’

Four of the team’s six trieswere scored in the secondhalf.

‘‘Our second half reallywas better than the first and areal credit to the boys playingin those conditions andretaining possession.’’

Two tries by LenonCarrington and one each fromTodd Shields, Dylan Ratana,Patrick Williams and TainuiWoodmass, along with twoconversions and two penaltykicks over the bar from SamClarke, took the final score to40-5.

The 35-point margin leftCollege Old Boys’ managerDean Thomas conceding histeam had been outplayed.

‘‘The second half should’vebeen to our advantage and wecertainly thought we were inthe game, turning with thewind behind our backs. You’ve got to give it toShannon, they took theirchances and scored wherethey could.’’

He said the team had beenhit badly with injuries in pastgames and but did not want touse that as an excuse.

‘‘The forwards were notmaking as many simplemistakes as in previousgames, Shannon just played

the wet rugby better.’’Fullback Simon Black

scored the team’s only points, one try, and was one of four

COB players to gain their clubblazer that day for playing in25 club matches. The otherswere Gerry Albert, MattJames and Chris Hirini fromthe Senior Reserves.

Union representative ToddIsaac gained his blazer forfive years in a managementrole.

Currently sharing fourthplace on the premier tablewith Levin Athletic, Thomasis determined COB will ‘‘getthings together’’ andmaintain their top-fourplacing in the third round.

Betty takes Plate off tableat veterans world champs

TOP OF THE TABLE: Levin’s Betty Thompson, 92, took the women’ssingles plate title at the World Veteran Table Tennis Championshipsheld in Auckland this month. PHOTO: TANYA WOOD

By TANYAWOOD

At 92, Levin’s Betty Thompson stillhas a mean forehand. Playing inher first STAG World VeteranTable Tennis Championships, heldin Auckland this month, Bettytook the women’s singles plateevent, in the 85+ age group, withease.

Betty overcame a first rounddefeat to a Japanese player in themain draw, to bounce back andwin in straight sets in the platefinal against her Americandoubles partner.

‘‘That was a bit unusual, to beplaying against my doublespartner. It wasn’t a tough game,’’Betty said. ‘‘I was the strongerplayer and just played my game. Idon’t know what the score was, Idon’t take any notice of scores. It’sjust a win or a loss to me.’’

Playing in the women’sdoubles, Betty and her Americanpartner lost in straight sets to aJapanese pair.

‘‘We only lost to the Japanese. They’re just so fast and theydominate the game, I can’t see who

else can beat them,’’ she said. This year’s world games

attracted more than 1600 playersaged 40-plus, from more than 50countries. New Zealand was one of25 countries to make it onto themedal table at 18th place with asilver medal in the men’s doubles,80-85 age group.

Betty, who had the distinctionof being one of the oldest players atthe tournament, the oldest personwas a 93-year-old man, has notchedup more than 70 years at the tennistable.

Levin born and bred, theveteran player took up table tenniswhile working in Wellington at theHousing Department. ‘‘They had atable tennis table downstairs and Iused to play in my lunch hours andsometimes after work with a goodfriend of mine who also workedthere. I watched others playingand then had a go.’’

Betty went on to play inter-clubin Wellington, partnering with herfriend to win provincial, SouthIsland, North Island and Nationaltitles, as well as winning thewomen’s singles national title in

her time.Betty can remember her first

national title win, in mixeddoubles in 1947, but can’tremember other dates.

‘‘I’ve won more times inwomen’s and mixed doubles thansingles.’’

There’s no trophy cabinet orscrapbook to refer to, Betty justplays her games.

Still playing inter-club tabletennis, Betty said she can beatplayers decades younger than her.‘‘People probably avoid myforehand but I can attack fromboth wings.’’

Turning 93 in October, Bettysaid she had been lucky with herhealth. ‘‘I’ve never had anyinjuries and rarely get a cold. That’s why I’ve been able to keepgoing I suppose. The only time I’vebeen in hospital is to have fourchildren.’’

The exercise and the ‘‘goodcrowd’’ at table tennis keep herlove of the game going strong. Withthe 2016 world champs in Spainbeckoning, Betty hopes she doesn’tget a reason to stop playing.

Blenheim-based teenager BrookReeve has won New Zealandmotorsport's most prestigiousyoung driver developmentprogramme.

Reeve was named as the 14thwinner of the annual SpeedSportScholarship, following a two-dayrunoff at the Manfeild racecircuit near Feilding. He is alsothe first South Island resident towin the top prize.

After making the final six lastMay, the 17-year-old put in ahuge effort of personaldevelopment over the past yearand returned to put in adominant performance.

‘‘I focused on all the things Ihad to work on from last year'sexperience and to win this isamazing. It's the best thing thathas happened for me,’’ Reevesaid.

The former MarlboroughBoys College student, this yearstudying the Motorsport courseat UCOL in Palmerston North, began racing karts when he wassix-years-old with theMarlborough Kart Club and haswon National and South Islandtitles.

His first experience of drivinga race car was during last year'sSpeedSport Scholarship andalthough that helped him to putin the quickest lap times, it wasthe bigger improvement in hisoff-track performance thathelped him clinch the mainprize.

‘‘Brook made a significantimprovement both on and off-track,’’ said co-founder DennisMartin.

‘‘He is so much moreconfident this year and cameback with the determination and

the belief that he could win it[scholarship].’’

Although Martin tutors andruns the scholarship winner inhis Sabre Motorsport team, hehas no influence or input intothe judging process and is notpart of the judging panel.

Palmerston North's Travis

Day, 17, a student at RathkealeCollege in Masterton was namedrunnerup. He also raced kartsfor 10 years before entering theSpeedSport Scholarship.

The other finalists were MattPodjursky, 14, from NewPlymouth, 16-year-olds MitchellTurner (Hastings) and Brendon

Jury (New Plymouth) and ConnorToki, 19, Palmerston North.

Michael gets to grips with gold medal

GOLD WINNER:Levin’s MichealParker produced aGold medal-winningperformance at theNew Zealand JiuJitsu GrapplersChallenge. He isalready back attraining preparingfor anothercompetition.

By PETER FRANKLIN

After only 18 months in the sport, Levin’sMicheal Parker took on the country’s bestin the white belt division under 70kg inthe NZ Grapplers Challenge, held inAuckland earlier this month, and camehome with a gold medal.

Parker said it was a great experiencefor him. The competitions, focusesground offensive and defensivetechniques, two opponents using bodystrength and technique to manoeuvreeach other into a position where they canapply a winning hold, forcing theiropponent to tap out (surrender).

‘‘It’s not as easy as it may sound aseach contestant tries to implement a

counter to every move to get theadvantage,’’ he said.

Parker said the sport was huge inAuckland.‘‘They have the population toattract big numbers, so winning a gold isa big achievement for me personally andthe club,’’ he said.

The club is part of the Southern TribesAoteroa, under the guidance of jiu jitsublack belt professor Pina Simpson andpurple belt Vaughn Antonio (SouthernTribes Manawatu) with Aaron Daveycoaching the Levin branch.

The Levin club has been going just 12months and club members are nowpreparing for a big competition beingheld in Kapiti, the New Zealand Gigrappling tournament in June.
