ARMISTICE DAY Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiegne, and the cessation of hostilities ending a four year war. It officially took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 when the guns famously fell silent. Due to the limited amount of advance warning, and disruption caused by the influenza pandemic, New Zealand’s official peace celebrations were enthusiastically embraced in July 1919. A two minute silence in remembrance of those who died in the Great War was marked at the Armistice Day Observance on Tuesday at Levin Cenotaph. A hardy crowd braved the wet weather to remember those, including 12 local men, who did not return from World War I, one of the bloodiest wars in living memory. At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, four years of hostilities officially ended between The Allies and Germany. Armistice Observance Day in Horowhenua had petered out after World War II, but was revived in 2009 by the Adopt an Anzac group following the Levin Cenotaph upgrade. Standing in for Horowhenua Mayor Brendan Duffy, Deputy Mayor Garry Good reminded the crowd that 100,000 Kiwi servicemen had signed up to fight. “They endured so much that today’s society would not accept or adequately cope with, and yet they did it with an unreserved respect for country and its flag. We can today acknowledge that sacrifice.” New Zealand lost 18,500 lives, with a further 50,000 wounded. An entire generation lost over four years for a country with just 1.1 million people in 1914. “Small communities like Horowhenua felt every single loss of life,” said Mr Good. “Their sacrifice was not in vain, we will remember them.” The Lament by sole piper Murray Easton after the two minute silence was followed by individuals and service groups laying wreaths, and recital of the Ode (from the poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon) read by RSA president Les MacDonald. Levin & District’s Brass band bugler Colin Honey played the Last Post and Reveille as sea cadets from TS Tutira lowered and raised the flag. Lieutenant Chris Collings, from the Levin Salvation Army, read a prayer of dedication and benediction.

Replacement bridges overduewith NATHANGUYOtaki MP

There are some excitingdevelopments for localtransport within our regionunderway.

The future of theWhirokino Trestle andManawatu River Bridge isnow open for publicconsultation, with aninformation forum heldyesterday in Foxton.

These upgrades are part ofthe Government’s acceleratedregional roading programme,a $212 million push to advancelocally important state

highway projects, announcedby the Minister of Transportearlier this year.

These are keyinfrastructural upgrades for

our region.Both bridges are nearing

their use-by date with the1.1km Whirokino Trestlebuilt in 1938 and theManawatu River Bridge in1942. Replacement bridges arelong overdue because ofsafety concerns andconstraints carrying heavyloads.

There are four optionsproposed, and I hope peoplewent along to have their say.If you couldn’t make it, youcan get more informationfrom www.nzta.govt.nz/whirokino

These developments

coincide nicely with thefantastic progress being madeon the Kapiti Expressway andTransmission Gully. I havebeen really impressed with allof these projects, particularlywith the strongenvironmental and safetyfocus they have. Kapiti’sM2PP Alliance recently wonthe Group Safety InnovationAward for Large Businessesat the Site Safe ConstructionHealth and Safety Awards. Itis great to see this localproject being recognised forits innovation and focus onsafety during a massiveconstruction period.

Council proceduresLocal Government Act 2002 states that thecouncil must act in accordance with thefollowing principles: Local authority shouldconduct its business in an open, transparentand democratically accountable manner, and should have regard to the views of all ofits communities.

The ratepayers and residents of Horo-whenua may well ask why our Mayor is hell-bent on stopping members of the public fromspeaking at the council meetings, is itbecause there is something to hide or is it,that the Council could be embarrassed if thepublic spoke?

Horowhenua residents and ratepayershave a right to know.

DAVID THOMSONChair (HDRRAI)

Rating reviewI am writing in response to the recentlyreleased council review of rating in thedistrict.

This document falls woefully short ondetails and supporting evidence to maintain

let alone justify the significant changes putforward. It is primarily being used as avehicle to adjust the differentials, read, theamount you are charged.

It is not about equity or fairness, it is areview to shift the onus of financialresponsibility from one sector to another.

This would be more palatable if there wasequity in service provision but there is not. There is a concentration of services in urbancenters at the expense of the balance of thedistrict. This approach can be sustained bysimple majority rule. Fairness, equity pleasedon't insult us.

Locally, our domain is fenced off fromuse, less than 50 per cent of streets havefootpaths, many with open drains, we have avolunteer library, there is no transport toavail of Levin services.

Services are centralised and conse-quently restrictive. There are numerousassumptions being promoted, that certainsectors have greater discretionary incomeand hence should pay more, show us thesupporting evidence, to compare urban andrural users as if they are the same isoutrageous, service provision is not equal!

We find council proposing that busi-nesses should pay only around 50 per cent ofwhat everyone else would pay. This flies inthe face of accepted standards across NewZealand Councils, does council know some-thing they don't? Or is it simply that ourbusiness district is in such parlous straitsthat it needs subsidies from ratepayers? Myown opinion of this is to let them wither anddie. I am aware that there are numerousothers across the district that would like theopportunity to speak on this matter andwould request the Chronicle maintain an

open forum on this topic as it is of significantimportance for not only the current butfuture generations of the district.

Foxton cell coverageAt Foxton Beach, the most often heardcomplaint regards the lack of adequatemobile phone coverage to the area. In fact, Irecall reading an article some time agoabout Police concerns over lack of communi-cation effectiveness for the community.

Decent cellphone coverage is essential, not only to everyday users, but also forpublic safety. The beach and estuary areasare beautiful spots where visitors and localsenjoy the great Kiwi pastimes of fishing, boating, picnicking, playing with children, walking and exercising the dogs etc.

Unfortunately, while they are enjoyingthe place, their safety is compromised bylack of strong cell phone coverage. Riversand beaches can be dangerous places andadequate modern communications are vitalto public safety.

I am aware of the NIMBY (not in mybackyard) element of some of the older localsto modern technology, but perhaps a suit-able location for a cell tower could beadjacent to the fire station where otherservices already reside.

After a couple of years of pesteringVodafone and others, I am still unable to getany definitive answer as to when thissituation will be rectified.

Driver’s offer of ‘help’ to girl concerns policewith GRAEME JARVISCommunity Constable

Two males pushing a car

along Cambridge Street inLevin at 1.30am, Mondaymorning, drew theattention of a police patrol.

The vehicle had run outof petrol. Police wereamazed to find the carloaded with 30 bags of

potting mix, and theexplanations given by themen and the circumstancesin which they foundthemselves did not add up.Enquiries are continuingand it is possible thepotting mix had beenstolen from a local gardencentre.

Police would be gratefulfor any information frommembers of the publicconcerning a sinisterincident that took place onSunday, November 9,about 1pm in Queen StreetWest. A family, includingtheir 13-year-old daughter, were walking down theLevin road, and as thegirl’s pace slowed in theheat, she fell behind andsat down to rest.

A small four-door sedan, white or silver in colour, pulled up beside the girl. The car was driven by amale, Caucasian, agedabout 30 years, stubble onhis face, dark brown hair, wearing a baseball cap. Heasked if he could help andgive the girl a ride. Sherefused and then the driverbecame quite demandingbefore finally driving off. Ifthe description of this maleand his vehicle isrecognised by anyone, or ifanyone saw the incident, police would like to hearfrom them.

Police officers, for aslong as I can remember, getmore satisfaction fromcatching a burglar on thejob than from just about

everything else they arerequired to do. Just such acase occurred in the smallhours of Saturday,November 8, when aburglar alarm wasactivated at a disusedabattoir in Shannon. Policefound a hole cut in theboundary fence and avehicle parked inside thecompound.

On further investigation, they found a hole smashedin the wall and a 34-year-oldShannon man inside thebuilding. A search of his carfound a set of bolt cuttersand a small amount of drugsand utensils. He wasarrested and will faceburglary and drugs chargesin the District Court thisweek.

WELL WORTH THE EFFORT: Levin Intermediate School pupils’fundraising efforts were well rewarded when they spent twoweeks in Japan.

By FRANKIEWEBB

A contingent of 15Levin IntermediateSchool studentstravelled to Tokyo,Japan, andwitnessed an historicevent that forgedcloser relationsbetween their schooland Dokkyo SaitamaJunior High School.

A Memorandumof Understandingwas signed by bothprincipalsformalising a seven-year associationbetween the schools.

For LIS principalTrevor Jeffries it wasa first visit to Japanbut foraccompanyingteacher, Beth Duff, itwas the seventh.

The Kiwi studentswere billeted byDokkyo families, totally immersed inJapanese living.

“The children attendedclasses to learn Japaneselanguage, calligraphy, andmaths,” Ms Duff said.“Some students find theexchange life-changing,their first time out of NewZealand, two weeks awayfrom their families, learning how to rely onthemselves living in a verydifferent culture.”

The students visitedNikko, a historical village, then, in contrast, visitedDisneyland, Tokyo.

Japan was in the throesof an annual Japanese

Time on the track has been been a ‘buzz’

LVN121114spldstock

RACE face . . . what’s a race face?: Peter Franklin has had a couple of weeks in thefiring line and got the stockcar bug.

By PETER FRANKLIN

Two minutes of absolutely heart-pounding, adrenaline flowing, “hyperbuzz” is what you get in a 10-lap race.

Over the past two weeks I have had the

chance to really get the inside story onracing stockcars and, believe me, there ismore to it than a lot of people may think.

At the moment I have bruises in placesI did not know I had, and, no, it is notthrough old age.

Craig Rolstongave me thechance to do whata lot of stockcarfans would love todo, to drive his car331p, not just inone race but at acouple ofmeetings.

Out of sixstarts, I’vemanaged to finishfour races — withtwo trips back tothe pits swingingfrom the back of atow truck.

The aim of myadventure on tothe dirt atPalmerstonNorth’s RobertsonInternationalSpeedway was notto show theregulars how itwas done, thoughit would have been

nice to have been up the front of the pack, but that was not the car’s fault. It was to beable to pass on the experience to others.

One of the key factors to success on thedirt is listening, so sorry Craig, your lastwords of advice, “don’t use the brake” as Iheaded for the dummy grid, went in one

ear and out the other. The consequences of that is a very

broken car, bruises and theembarrassment of saying, “I didn’t listen, did I?”

No wonder he looked at me in disbelief, but hey that’s racing I suppose.

The interesting thing is the work thatgoes into maintaining, checking all thenuts (excluding the one behind the wheel)and bolts, tyres, wheels and so muchmore. Loading the spares, tools, fuel andstockcar on to the trailer, then off to thetrack, and once there getting all the paperwork done, registering for the night andgetting the car safety checked. Plusspending an uncounted number of hoursand money fixing serious damage when ithappens. All this and drivers still have aday job to do as well.

I must admit, the officials aren’t thereto hinder the process and I foundeveryone only too willing to advise andhelp.

The feeling of actually being part of thesport, being treated as just another one ofthe drivers, the friendly banter before andafter the meeting, has been fantastic.

So what have I really learnt out of allthis?

The dedication that the drivers, owners, pit crews and families have forthe sport. They are a generous, caringbunch of people whose friendship is gold-plated.

WERAROA PeaceMemorial, with gate, as itwas in 1923.

By TANYAWOOD

The Weraroa Peace Gate hasreturned to Weraroa Domainmore than 40 years after theoriginal memorial wasdismantled.

The gate formed part of theWeraroa Peace Memorialdedicated to those who fought inthe Great War of 1914-1918.

It was unveiled on April 11 1923with a line of 13 trees nearby, dedicated to a number of thetown’s pioneers who had died inthe previous 18 months.

The gateway landmark stoodfor 48 years at Weraroa Domainbefore being dismantled in 1971 toallow Oxford St to be widened.

Its gate and two marble plaqueswere put into storage, and the gatewas rediscovered in a local gardenin 2012. However, thewhereabouts of the two plaquesremains a mystery.

Since the gate’s discoveryAdopt an Anzac group was keen torestore it to its ‘near former’glory, in collaboration withHorowhenua District Council. Itwas rededicated on Tuesdayfollowing the Armistice DayObservation at Levin Cenotaph.

“We were determined the gatehad to come back to the domain,”Adopt an Anzac chairman TomHayes said.

In addition to their volunteerlabour, the group paid $3000 to

have the gate restored and planmore funding towards the project.A flag post, ‘borrowed’ for the day, will be replaced by a modern poleand individual poles representingthe 13 pioneers are due to becompleted by April next year.

“It’s very special, a huge senseof satisfaction to see it through tofruition,” Mr Hayes said.

“I just hope people respect it forwhat it is, a peace memorial.”

A wreath was laid by WorldWar II veteran Alex Fletcher, 94,who praised the Adopt an Anzacgroup for persevering with theproject. “They’re tremendous, Ican’t believe how much they’vedone. They’re all volunteers, youdon’t see that much work today.”

Parvo is extremely contagious and can be transmitted by anyperson, animal or object that comes in contact with an infecteddog's faeces. Highly resistant, the virus can live in the environmentfor months, arguably years, and may survive on inanimate objectssuch as food bowls, shoes, clothes, carpet and floors. It is commonfor an unvaccinated dog to contract Parvo from the streets, especially in urban areas where there are many dogs.

The main symptoms associated with the infection include severe, bloody and foul smelling diarrhoea, lethargy, anorexia, fever, vomiting, and severe weight loss.

Parvo can be diagnosed on a rapid test performed at the clinic.Treatment for Parvo may require intensive therapy. Most patients willneed to be hospitalised in the isolation ward, placed on intravenousfluids, given specialised nutrition, antibiotics and anti-nauseadrugs. Special gowns, gloves, footwear and other disposable itemsare used in their care. It may take several days before a patientshows improvement.

Some patients do not survive. Many pets are euthanised due to thecost of treating this disease.

It is, however, very easy to prevent Parvo. Vaccination is highlyeffective, and every dog should be vaccinated. All puppies shouldreceive their full course of vaccinations, and adult dogs vaccinatedat the recommended intervals throughout their life.

In an effort to get as many dogs vaccinated in our area as possible, the Nurses Parvo Vaccine Clinic will once again be held at Levin& Horowhenua Vets from 2 - 3pm this Saturday 15th November. The cost is $40, cash only. No appointment is necessary. Someconditions apply.

Planning for futureemployment needsHorowhenua employers aretelling it like it is, in an onlinesurvey to help develop astrategy to meet the demandsof growing industries in thedistrict for enough suitably-skilled staff available locally.

The survey is a key part todeveloping the HorowhenuaWorkforce DevelopmentStrategy.

Cameron Lewis,Horowhenua EconomicDevelopment Board chairman,is urging employers who havenot completed the survey to doso, in order to provide a realstock-take of current, emerging and futureworkforce needs in thedistrict.

Responses to date show themajority of employers arecurrently recruiting oridentifying roles, expectingbusiness to grow as well asother opportunities fortraining, development andsupport.

“The Board understands theneed to have a work-readylabour force. We alsounderstand the need for localstudents and their families to

have a greater understandingof our industries and the careeropportunities on offer here,"Mr Cameron said.

“There are Horowhenuabusinesses that could ramp uptheir production tomorrow —if they had the people.”

Once workforcerequirements are understood, the plan, believed to be a NewZealand first, is to engage localsecondary schools, tertiaryeducation and trainingproviders to roll out acurriculum in courses such asmanufacturing, engineering, retail, agriculture, inconjunction with on-the-jobwork experience.

Stevensons StructuralEngineers managing directorEvan Kroll said local schoolstudents needed to hear aboutlocal, viable career options.

Any employer wanting toparticipate in the WorkforceDevelopment Strategy onlinesurvey should contactHorowhenua District Council'sEconomic DevelopmentManager Shanon Grainger on(06) 366-0999 [email protected].

AQUARIUS: With the power to movemountains if you have to it comes down totrusting your heart and a clear sense ofwhat you do or don’t want professionally.PISCES: Venus’ return to your careersector signals that a professional lull iscoming to an end, but the focus is still onestablishing what you’re fighting for.

Getting the best out of strawberry plants

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

A couple of weeks ago I waswondering why my strawberrieswere not performing as well asthey should be for the time of theyear. I suspected the weather, toomany cloudy days and chillywinds.

I had broken up the beds inJune and replanted a lot of therunners coming off my bestparent plants, leaving a fewparent plants to preform anotherseason with lots of fresh youngplants.

While spraying the plantswith Mycorrcin, I noticed smallwhite flakes on some leaves —lots of very small aphids underthe leaves obviously sucking thegoodness out of the plants. Thewhite flakes are the spent shellsfrom their molts.

Now is a good time to check allyour plants and pay particularattention to any not doing sowell. I made up a spray of NeemTree Oil with Key Pyrethrumand Raingard in a pump sprayerto eradicate the pests. This spraymix is totally safe (unless youhave an allergy to any of thecomponents).

Neem Oil is not a poison, theactive component azadirachtinhas been demonstrated to be ofvery low toxicity, according tothe NZ Food Safety website. It isan anti-feedent and growthregulator, not harmful tobeneficial insects or bees — juston the pest insects feeding onfoliage. Key Pyrethrum is also a

natural insecticide, affecting thenervous system of insects andfish causing death. It will affectall insects that come into contactwith it, pest or beneficial.Pyrethrum is very quicklybroken down by UV so withinabout a couple of hours ofsunlight it is no longer active.

New Zealand Bee Keepers arerunning a public awarenesscampaign to educate gardenersnot to spray chemicalinsecticides over floweringplants because of the danger tohoney bees and bumble bees. This especially applies tochemicals from theneonicotinoid group, whichincludes Confidor, a systemicchemical that spreads throughthe whole plant and stays in theplant for considerable periods oftime, from seven days for onionsup to 70 days for vegetablebrassicas. Fruit from treatedgrape vines must be destroyed, with no fruit harvested forhuman or animal consumptionuntil the next season. In parts ofEurope where these chemicalshave been banned, beepopulations are recovering, goodanecdotal evidence that they docontribute to beehive colonycollapses.

Retraction and apologyMy August article headed

‘Herbicide damage’ quotedcorrespondence from a readerasserting poor results from seedmix and organic compostproduced by Revital Fertiliser andRevital Growwell. Claims werealso included alleging of recycledwaste. When I contacted thereader to ask permission toinclude the email in my article Iunderstood (incorrectly) that theclaims made by the reader werecurrent and did not verify theclaims or seek response fromRevital. The claims made in myarticle were unfounded and out ofdate. The circumstances referredto in the article concerned RevitalGrowwell only. There has sincebeen a change of ownership andmanagement of Revital Growwellbrand. The organic compost soldby Revital Growwell undergoesstringent independent testing andis certified organic by BioGroNew Zealand. I retract the claimsmade in the article and offer mysincere apology to Revital.

Mazda MX-5 the best-selling roadster

Mazda has already revealed the racing version of its new generation MX-5 sports car.

The Mazda MX-5 is the best-selling roadster in history, andalso the most road-raced car inthe world.

With the recent unveiling ofthe fourth generation MX-5, themost frequently asked questionis, “Where will it race?”

Mazda has given the first partof that answer at the recentSpecialty Equipment MarketAssociation (SEMA) tradeshowin Las Vegas, announcing theall-new Mazda MX-5 will beraced in a new Global Cup seriesin North America, Europe andAsia.

Starting in 2016, there will bemultiple Mazda Global MX-5 Cupseries around the world, allusing identically prepared cars.

Full details of the Global MX-5 Cup, including whichcountries will be involved andwhen the races will take place, will be announced as they areconfirmed.

The Global MX-5 Cup willculminate at the end of 2016 witha Global Shootout at MazdaRaceway Laguna Seca inMonterey, California, to crownthe series champion.

Among other prizes, theseries champion will receive aone-day test in Mazda’s top-levelTUDOR United States SportsCarChampionship SKYACTIVprototype racecar.

“Since the first Mazda MX-5took the green flag back in 1990,the car has been the idealplatform for both veterans androokies alike,” said JohnDoonan, director of motorsportsfor Mazda North Americanoperations.

“Because the MX-5 is

inherently such a good car todrive, it is an ideal platform tolearn basic and advanced race-craft, and this has made theprofessional MX-5 Cup seriesvery successful to date.”

While Mazda did not releasefinal specifications or technicalpartners for the car, it was

confirmed the Global MX-5 Cupracecar will be equipped with a2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G fourcylinder engine.

Beginning this winter, MazdaMotorsports will carry outdevelopment to select theoptimum tyres, suspension andpowertrain and safety

modifications. The finalspecifications will be announcedin 2015 when Mazda is ready toaccept orders for the 2016 series.

In a first for Mazda, theGlobal MX-5 Cup racecars willbe sold “ready to race” from asingle supplier.

For 2015, the third generation

MX-5 will be used for its finalseason of professional racing inNorth America. The 2015 BatteryTender Mazda MX-5 Cup,presented by BF Goodrich Tires, will kick off at Sebring in March, and conclude at the Petit LeMans Powered by Mazda at RoadAtlanta in October.
