Local entrepreneur Wayne Bishop con-firmed there will be changes at the oldKimberley Centre which he purchased foran undisclosed sum.

“I have only taken over the property, Iam working with a lot of ideas, I can’t bespecific at this stage,” Mr Bishop toldHorowhenua Chronicle. “I can confirmLevin’s Riding for the Disabled group havea home here for the immediate future.”

RDA is a voluntary, not-for-profit organ-isation which provides opportunities foranyone with a disability to participate insafe, therapeutic horse riding in NewZealand.

The Levin group has operated out of thecentre for over 30 years having an allweather surface, stables and club rooms.They feared the sale of the Kimberley

Centre would result in the organisationhaving to relocate. Finding somewhere toaccommodate nine horses with a suitableriding area wouldn’t be an easy task.

“We did have a plan B up our sleeve,”RDA president Rick Schimpf said. “Wewere going to approach Horowhenua Dis-trict Council for help, and possibly theLevin and Foxton Racecourses as well asHorowhenua A.P. and I Association. Weare very relieved, and grateful, Wayne hasconfirmed we are still welcome here.”

The RDA group caters for riders fromKapiti to Manawatu, the next closestgroups being Silverstream and Hawera.

Pedestrian, 75, dieson way to hospitalBy PETER FRANKLIN

A 75-year-old Levin woman died on herway to hospital yesterday from injuriessustained when run over by a deliverytruck.

The fatality happened just after noon incentral levin, when the woman apparentlywalked behind the truck that was beingreversed into the service lane behind TeTakere.

Sergeant Jeff Lyver of Levin police saidthe woman initially was treated at thescene by St John ambulance officers andstabilised for transport to the Horo-whenua Health Centre heli-pad and awaiting rescue helicopter, the injuredwoman died mid-flight to WellingtonHospital.

Mr Lyver said police have spoken towitnesses and family members who werewith the woman at the time.

The driver of the truck was in shockover the incident.

The accident will be investigated by theserious crash unit. Mr Lyver said anyonewho saw the accident who had not beenspoken to by police were asked to contactthe Levin police station (06) 366-0500.

Archaic lawsAs a driver for over 55 years Ihave long thought that the roadrules in New Zealand arearchaic.

Firstly, In 1985 themaximum speed limit wasmiraculously changed from 80to 100kph on all roadsregardless of their suitabilityfor it. No changes to the roadswere made. I would advocatethat all these roads revert backto 80kph except for thosedesignated by transportauthorities and district councilsto be safe for 100kph traffic.Justabout all rural roads in NewZealand are not designed for thehigher speed limit.

Secondly, all new driversand younger, inexperienceddrivers need to be educated that80 is the normal speed limit.

Thirdly, as I have travelledon many French and Germanroads but never as a driver as IWOULD BE A POTENTIALKILLER — A TICKING TIMEBOMB without havingextensive driver training to doso safely, I would advocate thatall tourist drivers coming fromcountries where they drive onthe opposite side of the road,should firstly show that they arecompetent to do so beforedriving in New Zealand.

Our members of parliamentdo not recognise that we have a

problem but if a few of them hadtheir children killed then wejust might see a change.

Congratulations to King’sSound Centre for all theplanning and organisation thathad gone into the event. Manythanks to Paul, Eboney, Jasonand the wonderful crew whoworked tirelessly throughoutthe day.

It was a wonderfulopportunity for the variedmusic genres (reggae, folk,blues, jazz and Bavarian weresome that I heard) and also anopportunity for people of allages to be involved.

The other positive was thatpeople were experiencing a realsocial, community activity.Let’s hope this will become aregular event.

fireworks to the public. Eachyear vets, pet and livestockowners have seen thedevastating pain and sufferingcaused to animals due toirresponsible and thoughtlesspeople using fireworks near andaround them. It isacknowledged that organisedfireworks displays areacceptable, as plenty of warningcan be given when these eventsare to be held and responsiblepet owners can therefore ensuretheir pets are safely insideduring these events.

Students wantedto test drive appNew Zealand Red Cross islooking for computer savvypeople as test pilots for a newapp.

NZRC would in particularlike the assistance of Year 9 and10 students but anyone canregister online to take part.

Feedback will be used toimprove a first aid and disasterpreparedness app forsmartphones and tablets,before its official launch inJuly.

“We want to test the app onas many different devices, andin as many differentcircumstances as possible,”

said national education andtraining manager GrahamWrigley.

Students will use theinteractive app to learn aboutgiving first aid and planning foremergencies and it has thepotential to improve schools’preparedness for emergencies.

“For many students this willbe their first contact with RedCross and their first experienceof volunteering,” Mr Wrigleysaid.

“They are not restricted toadult books, we have children’sand teen books, fact and fiction.”

New technology has meantmore and more people areaccessing talking books.

“They can play on MP3,smartphones and of course CDs,”Rosalie said.

“People can enjoy their bookwhere ever they are.”

There is no restriction on whocan borrow talking books fromHorowhenua Libraries. They areregularly updated and swappedbetween branches.

4WD club event raises $8,500By PETER FRANKLIN

Manawatu 4WD Club memberstook great pleasure infundraising for the PalmerstonNorth-based rescue helicopterwhen the club hosted round fiveof the 4X4 Nationals earlier this

year. On Sunday, March 16, 70competition four wheel drivevehicles from around thecountry arrived at MichaelDransfield’s property in HartsRoad, Turitea for the running ofround five of the nationalcompetition. The round was

voted the best central zone trialof the season.

Club president Phil Shailersaid this was a huge feather inthe cap for the club.

An estimated 1200 spectatorswatched the excitement on thecourse.

Mr Shailer said the gatetakings totalled $8,500 which hadsince been donated to thePalmerston North RescueHelicopter.

Base manager Chris Moodywas overwhelmed at the size ofthe donation and thanked all

those involved in organising andrunning the event and said thatthis was another outstandingcontribution from within thecommunity, reiterating theimportance the Local RescueHelicopter Service was heldwithin the region.

Levin mum FaithWatters, husbandKieran and their twosons Noah, 9, and Zion,4, will be shaving theirhair off on Sunday tomark a specialmilestone in Noah’s life— starting his fourthyear free of cancer.

Five years ago Noahwas diagnosed with abrain tumour andunderwent surgery atAuckland’s StarshipHospital on June 18.

The family is raisingmoney for the ChildCancer Foundation.

“I don’t know howwe would have copedwithout their support,”said Faith.

“The foundation wasamazing and shavingour hair to raise moneyis our way of givingsomething back.”

After almost fouryears of no othersymptoms, Faith saidthe family is starting torelax and feel confidentthat Noah’s cancer hasgone for good.

“At the end of nextJune his doctors willdeem him cancer free.”

Noah was chosen asa Child Cancer FoundationRegional Ambassador in March.Together Noah and Faith haveraised $483 from a street appealand other donations. Their goal isto raise $1000 for the foundation.

The shave fundraiser will be atOriginal Glamour on Oxford St,

starting at 10.30am.“Original Glamour are kindly

opening on Sunday for this eventand it would be awesome to haveloads of people there to watch andeven join in, too,” said Faith.

The salon will stay open until12.30pm for anyone who wants to

This popular programme is free and isoffered to primary school children up to andincluding Year 8.

This year’s theme is the CommonwealthGames and it will run over a six-weekperiod, starting two weeks before the schoolholidays and ending two weeks after them —June 23 to August 1. Each child will receivea special booklet. Once they have read alibrary book, they fill out a review — it maybe a poem about the story, they could design

a cover for the book, or use any one of anumber of suggestions given.

Their reviews earn a sticker for thereading map on the journey through NewZealand to Glasgow. Incentives can also beearned along the way.

There will be a children’s entertainerhalfway through the programme and it willfinish with a grand finale where a new bookwill be presented to each child whocompletes the programme.

there was a 40 per cent increasein non-residential consents.

Confidence to purchasevehicles is also riding high, withcar registrations rising by 45 percent over the past year, whilecommercial vehicleregistrations climbed by 64 percent.

Waiopehu College decided to take abreak from Stage Challenge this yearand do a full production for the localcommunity.

This was the first time in seven yearsthe college has not entered theprestigious Stage Challenge but thefantastic feedback they received fromMan of Steel far outweighed theanything they could have got at thePalmerston North event.

Man of Steel was a musical challenge,however the cast nailed it, time aftertime. The show was not only a hitmusically, but also included some greatchoreography and flowed with a lot of

well-placed jokes and puns.With a cast of 50 and a crew of 20 all

working in harmony, work on the showstarted in February, rehearsing threetimes a week.

Last week it all came together playingover three nights to an audiencetotalling 600 patrons.

And yes, even the Chronicle had aMan of Steel. Ken Clarke whose epicbattle between good and bad, when hisleading lady Linda Street is kidnappedby Vulga Olga from the Volga and herevil henchmen. Our super hero savesthe day, but not before having hispowers drained by kroptonite. He ishelped by the unlikeliest of hero, BobbyBenson the Loser.

Horowhenua bands arehoping to strike the rightchord at this year’sSmokefreerockquest regionalheat tomorrow.

Hard rockers ConcretePills from HorowhenuaCollege, metal band Gospelfrom Horowhenua andWaiopehu Colleges, andFusion, two brothers fromFoxton, will be taking thestage, competing against 15other colleges at PalmerstonNorth’s Globe Theatre.

Concrete Pills — leadguitarist Kieran Batten, leadvocalist and rhythm guitaristGeordie Parent, bass guitaristJosh Anderson and drummerJosh Rothnie — didn’t have aname or song when theyentered the competition, aboutthree weeks ago.

“We thought we had moretime and just had to throw somethingtogether for the application,” said Josh.“Rehearsals have been pretty full-onthough, with some late nights. We had ourdoubts at times but managed to get ittogether and we’ve nailed our song.”

Written by the band, They’re WatchingUs is about the GCSB, John Key and KimDotcom. “It’s kinda political, kinda anti-John Key,” said Josh.

While hoping to get through to theregional finals, Josh said the band alsoplanned to upload a demo of their songonline. “We might even send it to theInternet party,” he said.

Veterans by comparison, Gospel formedin December last year and has alreadyopened for bands in Palmerston North andFoxton. Writing all their own material,drummer Kurt Thoms and lead guitaristKaidan Downs from Horowhenua College,and Waiopehu College student TimothyTasker on rhythm guitar and lead vocals,admit there are no “light” lyrics in theirmetal-influenced songs.

With titles like Drown the Mermaid andZombie Apocalypse the group’s competitionentry, Legend Goes, about how the worldwill end, should come as no surprise.

“We just want to perform on stage,” saidTimothy. “If we win, we win, if we lose, welose.”

At last year’s regional final,Horowhenua band 66Queens, featuring

Keiran Batten, Geordie Parrent and Thoms,took the People’s Choice award.

They have packed in a lot ofadventures since then. Thegroup of nine, aged 14 to 18,have kayaked the Otaki Rivermouth, tramped overnight toMangahao Hut, beenpaintballing and took part inthe Wellington Metlink City

Safari. The Venturer’s attendedLevin’s Dawn and RetreatANZAC Day Services with otherSt Mary Scouts Sections.Cooking skills were put to thetest when they ran the kitchenat the St Mary’s Cubs and Keacamp.

Section leader ChrisRawlingson and St Mary’sGroup leader Brent Hurlimannperformed an investiture for

the unit members at LevinCenotaph.

“It was a mixture of fun andformality,” Mr Rawlingson said.

“They reaffirmed theircommitment to Scout Law, aftera bizarre hat competition atMcDonalds.”

The Unit travelled to severalcamps emphasising outdoorskills, team work and leadershipwith other Venturers from the

Lower North Island Zone.“We would welcome new

Levin Spinning and Weaving Group helda Spin-in at Levin Memorial Hall, whichthey have described as one of their mostsuccessful.

Visitors from Hawke’s Bay,Wairarapa, Wellington and everywherein between, arrived in bus loads. LevinSchool’s kapa haka group entertained inthe morning and local ukulele group,Ukuladies in the afternoon.

The usual trade stands were busy butthe day had a special theme. Visitorswere invited to make poppies —crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn fromany materials — for 2015 AnzacCommemorations.

Levin president Sue Brown is takinghandmade poppies to France next year tolay on New Zealand war graves. Anyleftover poppies will be donated to anAustralian project called 5000 Poppies.The project plans to “plant” a field ofmore than 5000 handmade poppies inFederation Square, Melbourne as avisual tribute to Australian servicemenand women.

Poppies flowered on the battlefields ofBelgium, France and Gallipoli in thespring of 1915 and have become a symbolof both great loss in war and hope forthose left behind.

Survival essential skillAquatics Horowhenua Learnto Swim co-ordinator RachaelMiller said water survival isan essential skill in life.

“All of our learn to swimprogrammes have water safetycomponents within the courseand we have done so for thepast 10 years.”

Aquatics Horowhenuaprovides both Learn to Swimand Swim to Survive holidayprogramme courses throughits Streamline Swim School,adopting a combined watersafety and learn to swimstructure within itsprogramme.

“Some parents raise

concern that the water safetyelement in the course is notbeneficial to their children andwe often find a decline in thewinter months to other sportscodes,” Ms Miller said.

“We want to emphasise themessage that the life skillslearnt in Streamline SwimSchool Programmes are lifeskills. Students who learnthese skills are far betterequipped in a survivalsituation, as the University ofOtago research indicates.”

She said water safety skillswould be added into its waterbabies/toddlers programmesearlier this year.

1. Hold your breath if possible for the first 5-7 seconds uponimmersion.2. Float first, practice regulating your breathing andmentalstrategies to combat the tendency to hyperventilate andpanic.3. Plan the best course of action for the situation i.e. stayand wait for help, find a floatation aid, swim to safety, etc.4. It is possible to get your body used to cold waterimmersion relatively quickly to reduce the cold shockresponse with 8-10 cold immersions at about 15°C for 2-3minutes.5. Learn how to tread water effectively and associatedsurvival skills; not just how to swim.

Boaties are being reminded thatdespite tips from a new universitystudy for surviving in cold water,their best protection is still a goodlife jacket.

Results released from aUniversity of Otago study lastmonth, testing the body’s shockresponse to cold water, foundrepeated plunging into10 degreewater, coupled with mental skillstraining and improved watertreading techniques, saw recoveryrates from cold shock response intwo to three minutes.

It stated that many drowningdeaths could be prevented ifpeople learned to wait out thebody’s initial shock response tocold water, characterised by agasp and followed by rapidhyperventilation.

The research has hugeimplications for learn-to-swimprogrammes as well as teachingpeople what to do in suddencoldwater situations, according toAssociate Professor Chris Buttonof the School of PhysicalEducation, Sport and ExerciseSciences at the University ofOtago.

Foxton Beach Coastguard vicepresident Tony Huisman saidalthough it was good advice, “Ican’t see boaties going to a pool tolearn immersion techniques”.

“On a fine day in winter, wecan have 40 to 50 boats out andboaties all have the mindsetthey’re not going to sink. In myopinion, they need the right safetygear.”

He said the most practicalthing for a boatie to wear,especially in winter, is a neoprenevest.

“It keeps you warm on theboat, and will at least dampen theinitial shock of cold water.”

A life jacket with pocketscontaining a personal locatorbeacon (PLB), waterproof VHFradio and water-activated strobelight that can be seen from the airand up to five nautical miles, werealso essential, he said.

“Boating accidents happen inless than 20 seconds. If a roguewave hits you, it’s all over; you’reout in the water. You don’t havetime to think, no good leavingPLBs and lights in the boat. It’simportant we can find peoplequickly.”

He said water temperature atFoxton Beach in winter averagesabout 11 degrees, sometimes aslow as nine degrees.

“Survival time will depend on

a person’s body weight, fitnessand immunity to cold. Somepeople may only survive 30minutes in cold water others up to10 hours, possibly.”

His advice is don’t attempt toswim home.

“Swimming uses up body heatand hyperthermia will set in veryquickly. Stay with the boat [boatsare more visible] and curl up in afoetal position. If there are othersin the water, get in a group huddleto preserve heat.”

The new life jackets, whichinflate automatically when theyhit water, cost about $200. A PLBcoasts about $545, a VHF radio$200 and about $10 for a strobelight.

“If boaties can spend $30,000 to$40,000 on a boat, what’s an extra$1000 or so compared to their life.”

It isn’t only your engine that doesn’t like to start in the winter.Your battery capacity is reduced by the cold weather, too. Athorough inspection of your battery, cables, terminals, and

fluid will help you make sure your car is ready for the winter.

Check over the battery cables for cracks and breaks. Theterminals should fit snugly with no loose connections. You

can check your battery fluid by uncovering the refill hole (orsometimes holes). If the level is below the bottom of the cap,

refill with distilled water.

To read the level of charge in your battery, you will need toturn the engine off. Some batteries have a built-in hydrometer

eye that tells you the amount of voltage remaining in thebattery. If you prefer, a handheld hydrometer can be used to

collect the same information.

While you’re inspecting your battery, look around for themanufacture date. Knowing how old your battery is can clue

you in to when it will begin to lose charge.

Earlier in the year I spoke toHorowhenua Breath EasyGroup, what a great group ofvolunteers doing a wonderfulwork, helping those withbreathing and many relatedillnesses that can be associatedwith this.

Understanding theirconcerns and needs is apriority, one of those being theneed to ensure that we canenhance and retain the UrgentCommunity Care project.

To support the service, thathas proved to be of great valueto the community as a whole,the group sent a petition toMidCentral District HealthBoard in 2013 asking to retainthis pilot project.

In the later part of last yearSt John, central PHO andclinical leaders worked on arevised service model, inDecember the model wasaccepted by the Ministry ofHealth, resulting in ongoingfunding.

This was a key victory, notonly for the Breath EasySupport group but for the widercommunity as well.

The key feature of therevised service model isintegration with other primarycare services based out of theHorowhenua Health centre. Theservice will operate 12 hours aday, seven days a week, outsidethese hours St John ambulancewill respond to 111 calls.

Plus with HorowhenuaHealth centre will operating anafter hours clinic from 5pm to7.30pm weekdays and 8am to5.30pm on weekends and publicholidays, giving the districtsresidents a centralised place togo for medical treatment.

They run a busy

consulting business as wellas setting up the Greenery(previously PukehouNursery).

They are taking theirtime with this part of theventure and are looking athaving more interestingplants than the usual runof the mill.

Following these talksclub members visited TheGreenery before visitingJennings farm next door.This was set out withbeautiful specimen trees,chestnut and walnut trees,a large pomegranate and avariety of fruit trees.
