Tomorrow is the sixth World Meningitis Day recognised in 28 countries. The day is held annually to raise the profile of meningitis. Meningitis is a disease that can affect anyone, anywhere and at any time. Infection occurs through exposure to discharge from the nose or throat of a person who is infected. You can carry and spread the disease having no symptoms yourself. Every year more than 1.2 million people globally contract some form of meningitis. Horowhenua has had it’s share of both MenzB and MenzC. The disease tends to raise its ugly head during the colder months of the year, but not exclusively. ‘‘I want to get the word out there to get vaccinated, get your kids vaccinated,’’ said Lisa Gallagher, whose daughter Tesh succumbed to MenzC in 2012. ‘‘I work in a school, I see kids taking turns to drink out of water fountains and I cringe. Kids share things, but they have no understanding of the consequences.’’ See page 25 for their story. Better safe than sorry saves teen’s life In June 2005 Horowhenua College student Louise Duncan developed a stiff arm and went to bed early. She woke at 5am and vomited. The radio news announced a flu epidemic had closed Wellington schools, and she and her parents were convinced Louise had flu. Dozing off and on, she lapped up the sunshine pouring into her room, didn’t feel like eating but drank plenty of water. At 5pm her mum noticed a rash had developed on Louise’s palms and soles. Unable to raise a GP, her parents went to Palmerston North A&E unit deciding better to be safe than sorry. While waiting at the hospital Louise began to lose the use of her limbs; within two hours she had seizured, suffered strokes, was paralysed and put into an induced coma. She remained in intensive care for more than a week. Diagnosis to enable treatment took days while a culture was grown. It was confirmed, despite having had the first vaccination in a series of three, Louise had contracted meningococcal meningitis B. Extensive rehabilitation, frequent visits to hospital during the following years and daily medication for seven years meant Louise was one of the lucky ones.

THIS stunning Easter scene was shot by Horowhenua Camera Club member GordonHenry at Foxton Beach. Mr Henry said he quite often uses a cross in his scenes to addinterest but this shot was set up a couple of weeks ago with Easter in mind. ‘‘Gettingthe right sunset is always a bit hit and miss but I always keep an eye out on the sky andthis time got lucky,’’ he said. Mr Henry uses a Canon 650D and shoots in manual andRAW.

Snapper quotaI totally agree with Rob McCann. Thesnapper quota that has been imposed on therecreational fishermen is a farce. It is not aserious attempt to limit catches for thepurpose of conservation.

It is an attempt to fool the public intothinking that National actually is makingan effort to conserve the stocks whileallowing big business to continue to overfish the oceans as ever, to our detriment.

The big businesses are the ones that arereally depleting the stocks not the recrea-tional fishers.

Council chargesIt is going to cost you more to die and havedogs in Horowhenua as the HorowhenuaDistrict Council increase charges on cem-etery fees, as well as increases in dogcontrol, parks and reserves, solid waste andwater charges. This was well explained inthe agenda for the next council meeting butmay be seen as confusing by those personswho do not apply themselves to carefullyreading the 2014-2015 Draft Annual Plan(DAP) or Council agendas.

It is to be hoped that residents andratepayers put in submissions to not onlythe DAP but also to the reviews of the WaterSupply Bylaw (with the supplied useful andproven advocacy for water conservation)and the Solid Waste Bylaw (which currentlyhas no useful guidelines for the regularpickup of electronic waste). No wonderflytipping of old computers etc. is occurringor they get smashed up into little pieces andare secreted in the domestic rubbish bagsfor collection.

A sudden surge in rates may discouragesome people from retiring or shifting towhat is promoted as the best rural lifestyleplace in New Zealand to live and retire in.

However, the public memory is oftenconveniently short and those who doremember what the Horowhenua DistrictCouncil ratified in the past will have toagree that no fuss or consideration of

subsequent inability to maintain essentialinfrastructure was made when a nil rateincrease followed by a succession of voter-pleasing low increases was struck. Well, it’scatchup time. To make it clearer for thosereaders who do not understand financialreports, ‘‘the roof of the house is leaking andwe’re now forced into replacing it’’. Further-more if this council is seen as having a wishlist then it’s up to the ratepayers to make uptheir minds on the difference between needsand wants and the only way that messagegets across is by putting in a submission and

asking for speaking rights to it. It’s no usegrumbling in the kitchen. Get out and getyour feet under the Council table as aspeaker.

Poppy Pillars attract attention

AT HOME: Levin home residents, left, Bill Starr, Ruth Starr, Bob Hyde and Levin Home staff member Vicky Close.

There’s another ANZAC focal pointin Levin. Enliven’s rest homes,Reevedon and Levin Homes havecreated Poppy Pillars tocommemorate this year’s AnzacDay.

The Poppy Pillar in Levin home’sdining room has seen residents, staff, families, local school children, and even contractors taking time toremember the fallen as they make apoppy for the centre piece.

Levin Home enrolled nurse VickiClose said that they had come upwith the idea to cover the pillarswith homemade poppies afterhearing about the RSA’s appeal formembers of the public to jointogether and knit 5000 poppies to goon a war collage.

‘‘We decided that we would do ourown twist on the idea!’’ Ms Closesaid.

She said everyone wants to takepart and we’ve had people usingwool as well as red fabric, paper andcard to put their own unique stampon their poppy.

The Poppy Pillars are filling upfast but the homes are still lookingfor more poppies to add to thedisplay.

Ms Close says if anyone wouldlike to make a poppy to add to thepillar then pop into one of the homesand they will be happy to add yourcreation.

Enliven’s Levin Home has aproud history of supporting NewZealand’s war veterans. Today thehome continues to support thosewho fought for our country, alongwith both women and children whoalso experienced the impact ofWorld War I and World War II.

If you would like to attend LevinHome’s annual Anzac Day serviceattend the home at 9am on Friday. They hope to see you there!

Watch out: Scamshurt kindly suckersBy PETER FRANKLIN

Scams are the curse of a modern world, preying on the lonely, vulnerable and thegreedy.

However, how often do we actuallyhear about the hurt they cause?Community Constable Graeme Jarvis(pictured) does and it sickens him.

Mr Jarvis said over the past couple ofyears he has heard tales that would bringa decent person to tears.

He said the modern scam is wellpresented and on the surface seems verygenuine, but people should look carefullybefore getting involved.

‘‘There is a true old saying, if it soundstoo good to be true, then it probably is.’’

Mr Jarvis said he has spoken to peoplewho have been caught out and some whohave been on the brink and for somereason not taken it any further.

Mr Jarvis said scams appear in a hugevariety of formats, including personalletters, emails and by telephone.

Where do they originate? ‘‘That is hardto pinpoint. Ghana, Spain, Holland,Canada, England,’’ he said.

One of the most common scams comesin a letter, generally from a personpurporting to be a lawyer, who has beensearching for family members of adeceased person who left an estate worthmillions of dollars. Or perhaps it’s abusiness deal from an African businesspartner who wants to develop an agent inNew Zealand to hold millions in funds forfuture investment.

The scams that prey on people’sloneliness and kind nature are the onesthat really sicken Mr Jarvis.

‘‘Two in particular come to mind — anolder woman who had been contacted by afamily in financial need, thecommunications she received groomedher for the scam, over time she sent a total

of $10,000 to help this family; and an olderlocal man who was lonely and looking forcompanionship.

‘‘He made contact with a person on adating site, and over time developed whathe thought was a genuine relationship, till the crunch came and he was asked tohelp out with a large deposit to a bankaccount.’’

Mr Jarvis said scams have one thing incommon: they all ask for an amount ofmoney to be sent before anything canproceed; the sums vary in size but MrJarvis said people will only end updisappointed and out of pocket.

‘‘My advice is, if you get a phonecall oran email offering something that isfinancially rewarding, hang up or deleteit, mail dump it,’’ he said.

All fun at the Foxton Easter FairSTORYANDPHOTOSBY FRANKIEWEBB

Call it devine intervention, fate or luck but whatever it is Foxton Easter Fairseems to have it. In 22 years it has never been cancelled. Just the same aslast year, near cyclonic conditions leading up to Easter Sunday abated formost of the day, that day dawned fine with light sea breezes. Levin battledwinds and heavy showers while Foxton fair goers were sunning themselveslistening to the strains of guest band Henpicked. The stalls seemed busy butspace wasn’t at quite the premium of last year. A number of fairgoerscommented it made getting around everything easier. Food stalls were busyand a lot of new, and not so new, trade stands doing a steady turnover. TheFoxton Easter Fair began over two decades ago as ‘entertainment’ for peoplecoming to the area for Easter holidays. A group of locals believed there wasnothing happening in the town and the Easter Fair was born. It has returnedmore than $200,000 back to the community from gate takings and profit.

THE girls of ’88 from Waiopehu College before they take on ‘the boys’ in a netballmatch, part of a four-day Class of ’88 reunion.

The Waiopehu College Class of ’88 showedthey still had what it takes on and off thesporting field at their reunion last weekend, taking on the Levin Barbarians and raisingalmost $10,00 for the Levin War VeteransHome.

What had started as a get-together of theold First XV rugby team evolved into a fullclass reunion and fundraiser.

About 100 former students from theLevin college arrived with families, from asfar as Scotland, Singapore, Hawaii andAustralia for the four-day event, whichincluded sporting fixtures, a quiz night,black-tie dinner and charity auction.

After a netball match between the ‘‘boysand the girls’’, in which the boys were‘‘soundly thrashed’’ 27-6, the lads were ableto redeem themselves in an ’80s-style rugbymatch, taking on a Levin Barbarians teammade up of Levin Wanderers, Levin OldBoys and Athletic rugby clubs in three20-minute games.

Played using rugby rules and an old stylebrown leather ball from the ’80s, the FirstXV from 1985-88, renamed the WaiopehuReunionists and kitted out in the old tealcolours, performed the original college hakafrom 1986 ahead of the match played at theLevin Domain, eventually won by theBarbarians 32-25.

Reunion organiser Jason Stewart saidthey gave it everything they had. ‘‘Therewere guys playing for their lives. We werepretty tired and sore afterwards and it’s fairto say some of us had new walking styles thenext day.’’

He said the camaraderie and bonds arestill there 30 years on. ‘‘The ’80s just seemedto be a great era and we were all great matesin and outside the college. We just allwanted to see each other again and we hadloads of fun. We’re already talking aboutanother reunion in five years’ time.’’

The event, a year in the planning, wasalso an opportunity to give something backto the community. Mr Stewart said as thereunion coincided the WW1 centenary yearand Anzac Day coming up, it seemed rightto show their thanks for the sacrifices madeby war veterans. ‘‘Quite a few of us havedirect association with the Levin war vetshome, having grandfathers cared for there, and we wanted to show our appreciation.’’

The event, one year in the planning, alsoincluded a charity auction which raisedmore than $9500 for the war veterans’ home, with additional money from collections atthe rugby match, donations andsponsorship.

THEY arrivedunannounced.Thousands of troopsfrom across Australia

and NewZealand, primed forwar.Gathered together aboard

dozens of warships, ladenwithhorses, typewriters, ambulances, provisions andtonnes of weapons, they sailedinto the King George Sound, onWestern Australia’s south coast. And for the next week, the

town of Albany— population4000— became the lastAustralian homemany of theseyoung, fearlessmenwould everknow. It was late October, 1914, and

the Australian Imperial Forceand the New ZealandExpeditionary Force— theAnzacs— had been deployed toEurope.Just days earlier, it had been

resolved theywould cross theIndian Ocean on board nearly 40ships, but they neededsomewhere to gather.Albany is the oldest

permanently settled town inWestern Australia, pre-datingPerth and Fremantle by twoyears, when in 1826 it wascolonised as amilitary outpost

as part of Australia’s resistanceto French ambitions. The 110sq km sound is

sheltered on all sides fromwindsand heavy seas— and so, wasbig enough, deep enough andcalm enough to house thebiggest fleet the Commonwealth

had ever assembled. And so they came.‘‘Here were gathered

innumerable vessels of everyline trading in the southernoceans. Not painted uniformlygrey like our ships, but taken inall their glory of greens, blues

and yellows, they rode on thecalmwater of King George’sSound, packedwith theadventurous spirits of the FirstAustralian Division,’’ wroteMajor FredWaite, author of TheNew Zealanders at Gallipoli. The equally sheltered,

secluded townsfolk of Albanyhad never seen anything like it.‘‘It was one of those things

that snuck up on the people ofAlbany, and they did not know itwas happening because ofmilitary censorship,’’ recountsMalcolm Traill, publicprogrammes officer at theWAMuseum in Albany.‘‘Theywoke up onemorning

in late October to see that shipshad begun to arrive in ourwaters . . . and the war hadstarted.’’The numbers of troops were

huge.Thirty six ships gathered—

26 fromAustralia, 10 fromNewZealand— to be joined later bytwo sailing from Fremantle. An escort convoy of six

warships and one Japanesecruiser would protect theprecious cargo— 20,000 soldiers,2000 sailors and 7000 horses.Behind the fleet command

vessel Orvieto would sail in theHymettus, the Geelong, thePera, the Omrah, the ClanMaccorquodale, theMedic, theArgyllshire, the Shropshire, anddozens of others. And for days, as the Albany

townsfolk watched from theland, the ships and themen satandwaited in the harbour, whilecoal and fresh water werereplenished.

‘‘Theywere bored, sick oftraining andwaiting fordecisions; they were told whenthey signed up their Empireneeded them and theywere verykeen to go and do their bit,’’Traill says.‘‘But they had little idea of

what theywere in for in theweeks, months and yearsahead.’’To help expend the nervous

energy and relieve the boredom, troops were ferried ashore dailyto exercise, to drill andmarch.Their impending sacrifice

was embraced.‘‘One of the breweries set up a

stall to help refuel themarchingmen, and a couple of men fromthe brewery took a keg downand encouraged themen to get atop up to send them on theirway,’’ Traill says.‘‘And the townsfolk

presented the troops with sprigsof wattle, which some placed inthe Slouch Hats and that was amemory of Albany, andAustralia, they would take awaywith them.’’Then just as quietly as they

arrived, in the early hours ofNovember 1, the troops left, headed for Egypt, theDardanelles and Gallipoli.Steaming out under the gaze

of Mount Clarence, one by onethe ships passed Breaksea

Island and its lighthouse, occupied by its keeperMr Howeand his teenage daughter Fay.And one by one, she signalled

to the departing fleet inmorsecode, becoming formany youngsoldiers, the last human contacttheywould ever havewithAustralia.Weeks later, after a second

convoy had also departed andAlbanywas returning tonormality, postcards beganarriving from theMiddle Eastaddressed to ‘‘The little girl onBreaksea Island’’, from themenwho had hung on to that finalmemory of home. This year, 100 years on from

the departure of the fleet, thememory of thosemen andwhatthey facedwill be honoured.Troops will march onAlbany’sstreets, as they did in 1914. Shipswill gather in the sound, as theydid in the days before battle. And onNovember 1, the day

of the centenary of the firstconvoy’s departure, the NationalAnzac Centre will open, perchedoverlooking the waters fromwhere the troops departed.‘‘Albany has a special place in

Australia’s history. And,hopefully, we learned our lesson, sending thousands of troops towar in one convoy knowing theywould not return,’’ Traill says.

KC Motors ready to help

In a world of throw away gadgetry andcheap and nasty products, KC Motors has aproud history of service,

experience and a top quality range forthe district since 1956.Offering solutions, not salesmen, KC Motors aims to help itscustomers keep their properties beautifulusing the best brands and the bestbackup.

This is based on its team’s extensiveproduct knowledge, KC Motors’ history inthe business, as well as great parts andservice backup loan equipment forbreakdowns, and pickup and delivery.

The KC Motors team has a great blendof older staff with a wealth of knowledge, along with younger staff who provide theenergy and drive to make things happen.Adding to the team’s experience is therecent addition of Roger Hinton, ex-LevinMotorcycle Centre, who has been in thebike industry for more than 35 years, andin the 80s held the Stihl agency.

KC Motors’ staff sees it well placed todeal with new trends in the outdoorequipment industry: including thegrowing lifestyle block market, which isonly getting stronger around the region.

Another trend in the market is themove away from cheap, buy-on-impulse-

one-year and throw-it-away-the-next typeof products. There has been a noticeableincrease at KC Motors in customersspending money on products, especiallygenerators and waterblasters, which arebuilt on quality and strength rather thanon price.

It is not unusual for staff to seecustomers who have bought awaterblaster from a big-box store oronline and have it rapidly breakdown, something that strengthens KC Motors’obligation to sell on quality, not price.Acase in point is KC’s line of WalkerMowers, rugged machines built for therigours of daily commercial operation, anddesigned to mow virtually any property.

Every detail of the Walker design hasbeen tested in the field, and as a resultevery Walker is reliable, designed toperfection, and manufactured to give topperformance.

Nothing shows the reliability of theWalker more than the satisfaction ofcustomers such as Repi Wright from Levin

Holiday Park. Proud owner of a WalkerMCGHS, Repi mows almost 2 hectares ofland at the park property.

‘‘I used to spend six to seven hours onmy old ride-on, but have now reduced thisto between three and a quarter and fourhours mowing.

Repi says a strong selling point of themowers is the service and after-salessupport received from KC Motors.

KC Motors is really accommodating andhappy to help when you need assistance. The quality range of top gear continueswith some of the best brands such as Stihl,Honda, Bearcat, Billygoat, and Hustlermowers; and an excellent regionwideservice including picking up anddelivering delivering equipment as faraway as Wellington and Taihape.

‘ It’s not clear why thebacteria passes from thenose or throat into theblood stream in somepeople and not others.’

Meningitis is inflammation of the layerscovering the brain and spinal cord andcan be caused by a virus, fungus, parasite, bacterium Neisseria meningitis, medicalconditions or some medicines. Up to 15 percent of people carry the bacteria thatcause meningococcal disease (Neisseriameningitidis) in their nose and throatwithout being sick. You may have it rightnow. In some people this bacteria goes onto cause disease, spreading through thebloodstream (causing septicaemia) or tothe brain (causing meningitis).

Humans are the only carriers of thedisease. There are about 100 cases ofmeningococcal disease in New Zealandeach year, it is fatal in approximately halfof the cases and accounts for around170,000 deaths around the world each year. Most cases in New Zealand are caused bygroup B, next most common is group C.

There have been limited outbreaks ofmeningococcal A disease, groups W135and Y are rare in New Zealand.

People living in crowded conditions, like hostels, or who are exposed to tobaccosmoke are more likely to host the bacteria.

It’s not clear why the bacteria passesfrom the nose or throat into the bloodstream in some people and not others.

Menz bacteria can be transmitted fromperson to person through droplets ofrespiratory or throat secretions, egkissing, coughing and sneezing, sharinglipgloss, cigarettes, drink bottles or cans, mouth guards, hankies, baby pacifiers(dummies) or anything that could havecome into contact with secretions.

I really am totally lost for words as faras describing how the Great ForestEvents went for me on Saturday but afew small ones would beWOW,WOW,WOW!!The weather couldn’t have been

better if we’d made it ourselves. Iarrived with my family not too earlybefore my race and there were carseverywhere, a bit of traffic leading upto the gate, which we sat in for all but 2seconds before I jumped from thepassengers seat advising my husband Iwould run ahead. I could not containmy excitement, I just wanted to get inamongst the people and start my 10kmrun. I was out of the car and across thepaddock, flew over the stile like a realfarm girl, headed for what I could onlymake out to be a very large inflatablefinish line!!I got to the event HQ and joined the

masses. The music box was pumpingloud with a really good tune and itactually helped me to relax. I rushed toget my safety pins and get my bib onmy great forest singlet (nice andstraight), I started to do little stretches, looking around at all the people, somevery serious athletes and then thenormal civilians like myself all seemedto be doing little stretching movementstoo!! It was then time for the eventbriefing. It was very good and veryinformative which I found great as I’mdefinitely one who likes to know quitespecific details especially when itinvolves putting my body on the line hehe. What seemed like thousands of

people started moving towards thegate and I’m thinking, oh no blowmedown daisy, surely they aren’t all doingthe 10km Run??? It was like a scenefrom amovie, everyone moving ever soslowly leading up to the start line, thousands of participants all pumpedand eager, but nervous. People were

everywhere; children, nanas andgrandpas, families galore. My mumtook off to the front so I was happy Ihad my husband to talk to leading up tothe start or I might of detoured I thinkwith all the butterflies in my tummy. We got away ok, over the starting

pad and it is straight into amaneuvering game, a bit like checkers, sideways, up across that sort of thing, always looking for a gap to moveforward into the clearing. I started offwell, remembering all the advice fromeveryone, pacing myself, not gettingcaught up in the fast lane with the topathletes, choosing someone (a marker)to keep up with. I ran a good strong6km before my first stop (prettychuffed with that distance), stretchedmy calf muscles a couple of times andfrom there carried on running at a goodpace, I probably walked a kilometre outof the 10 I’d say. I finished very happyand feeling on top of the world, like I’d

come first, completing it in 1hr 9mins.It was so good, I loved it and I am a

bit sad it is all over now but I amdetermined to keep training and planon doing similar events in the nearfuture, maybe further afield butdefinitely keen to sign up for anotherone. I was so proud of mymum andmyhusband for doing the GFE with me, myfriends fromWellington that came todo it also. I can not wait till next year asI can almost guarantee in a year’s timeI’ll be set to do the half marathon. It was fantastic to see so many

people from the region take part in theevent, we really do have an awesomecommunity. I not only have a nice shinymedal to show for my 10 week trainingcourse but I have lost 7-8kgs, I havesome great healthy eating habits, and Ihave increased my fitness levels by 100per cent. It proves anyone can makethe changes just by the choice to enteran event, try something new, there isplenty of activities in the community tobecome part of, it’s just a matter ofmaking the choice, taking the firststeps and setting small achievablegoals each and everyday.I’m so stoked I decided to do the

Great Forest Event and even moreexcited that I achieved what I didn’tthink I could 10 weeks ago just bymaking the choice to try!!Motivational Quote ‘‘It’s a lifestyle.

Train like there is no finish line.’’■ For results head to :WWW.GREATFOREST.ORG.NZ
