Superannuation increases great for regionFROM THE BEEHIVE

with NATHANGUYOtaki MP FROMMY DIARY

- Cabinet was onMonday.- The House is sitting this week.- On Saturday I plan to have myrunning shoes on at the GreatForest Run at Waitarere Beach.

The recent announcement thatSuperannuation rates have againincreased is great news for our region.

These recent changes, which tookeffect on April 1, are positive news forour Superannuants.

This increase is reflective of thisGovernment’s commitment toensuring that older New Zealanderscontinue to have access to the securityand wellbeing in life that theydeserve.

Over the past six years theseincreases have been consistentlymaintained. Over this time, all ratesof Superannuation have increased by28 per cent.

This is vital for the Otaki electorateas we have the highest number ofpeople aged over 65 years on aproportional basis in New Zealand.

In hard numbers, the increaseshave meant that since 2008, the

married rate ofSuper has goneup by nearly $250a fortnight andthe single livingalone rate hasgone up by over$160 a fortnight.

Each increasehas been muchhigher than therate of inflation. We understand

that as the cost of living increases, measures must be put in place toensure that older New Zealanders cancontinue to lead comfortable lives.

Part of this commitment ismaintaining the married rate ofSuperannuation at 66 per cent of theaverage wage and keeping the age ofeligibility at 65 years.

Lastly, a reminder to everyone thatit is that time of the year for ratesrebates applications.

The Government has increased the

rates rebate thresholds for the2013/2014 rating year.

I encourage all of those who areeligible to take advantage of thisopportunity. The maximum rebateavailable is $595. To find moreinformation and determine if youqualify you can visit http://www.horowhenua.govt.nz/Living/Rating-Information/Rates-Rebates/.The closing date for applications is 30June 2014. These latestannouncements reflect the NationalGovernment’s focus on building abrighter future for all NewZealanders.

YOUR VIEWS

Stirling workUnlike Mrs Avonne Dobson, lettersApril 2, I applaud Bill Stirling forvoicing his opinion on matters in thepublic arena. Expressing an opinion onsuch matters over the tea cups or beermug is, largely, a waste of time.

Governments and councils rule cour-tesy of public apathy so the more peoplewho speak out publicly the better.

Expressing one’s opinion publicly onpublic matters invites others to agree orargue against that opinion thereby weall become better informed.

In my case I was a regular critic ofHDC before last year’s local bodyelection. I was very pushy on cleandrinking water, safe and efficient dis-

posal of sewage and disposing of house-hold rubbish at a reasonable cost. Thepeople of Horowhenua disagreed andshowed their preference for flash whiteelephant buildings and grandioseschemes by re-electing, mainly, thesame council. That’s democracy.

I will not be criticising council againuntil the next election. Having said thatI can’t help but smile at the irony of thepresent council whacking on a massiverates rise justified, they claim, by the bigspending of the previous council whenmost of them were on the previouscouncil. The people who hold societyback are not the Bill Stirling’s of thecountry but rather the ‘don’t knows’ onthe opinion polls. Goodness knows howthey get on when going to a restaurant

with all those choices on the menu.REG FOWLES

Flag optionsWhilst the British monarch is our headof state, it is quite appropriate for us tohave the union jack upon our flag. If,like Canada, we do decide to change ourflag, I would like to see something likethe All Blacks.

A black background, with the‘Steinlager’ logo, or the logo of thehighest bidder. I think that wouldrepresent modern New Zealand verywell.

PremiumPet Foods

Levin and Horowhenua Veterinary CentreQueen Street, Levin - Phone 368 2891

Our clinic focus for April and May is Premium Diets for Catsand Dogs. The Levin & Horowhenua Vets only sells Premiumquality diets. So, what’s is the difference in a Premium Diet?Premium Foods are strictly formulated to provide 100%complete and balanced nutrition including all the essentialvitamins and minerals that pets need for good overall health. Both nutritional deficiencies and nutritional excesses areharmful. This also means the inclusion of balanced omegafatty acid content, which has been found to be increasinglyimportant for a wide variety of body systems. The ingredients are of exceptionally high quality, meaningthat they are more easily digestible and leave less residue(less faeces produced).

Did you know that cats are true carnivores, dogs are actuallyomnivores? A cat's body is designed to consume moreprotein than carbohydrates: a trademark of a carnivore.Certain digestive tract enzymes that are common inomnivores are absent in cats. Therefore a balanced caninediet is not appropriate for a cat as it does not supply all a catneeds. Cats have a very critical need for much more taurinethan dogs. Too little taurine can lead to heart andeye disorders.

Another hallmark of Premium Diets is their strict recipe. If an ingredient is in short supply, they won’t just swap it foranother. Sudden changes in recipe like this can upset yourpet's digestive system. Premium Food manufacturers go togreat lengths to ensure that your pets gets the same highquality food in every bag or can.

Come in to your local vet for more advice on what benefitsPremium Quality Diets can provide for your pet.

Students learn from military campwith MAURICE TRUECo-Director of the Services Academy

LVN110414suphoro-1

HOROWHENUA CollegeStudents at the induction

parade.

The Army works on courage, commitment, comradeship andintegrity as the building blocks tosuccess.

The same words are equallyapplicable for the students of theServices Academy Students fromHorowhenua College who havejust returned from two weeks atWaiouru Military Camp.

They had the courage to attendthis induction course, knowing that theywere in for some longdays and even longernights. The fear andtrepidation wasevident on many facesas they started thecourse, but therewards uponcompletion arenumerous and life changing.

They had the courage toparticipate in:- Early Morning Activity (wake upat 0545).- Showers (30 seconds), make beds, vacuum floors, breakfast, cleanshowers and toilets, barrackinspections.- Lessons, which include lecturebased instruction on AHA, equalopportunities, culturalawareness, team building, ethosand values, NZ Police and YouthLaw, New Zealand Defence ForceRecruiters.- Physical Training, including theNZDF Army Regular FitnessLevel test, orienteering, circuittraining, cross country.- Three-day Experiential BasedLearning, involving a trip to the

NZDF Army Museum, field craftlessons (clothes layeringtechnique, Knots and lashings andimprovised stretcherconstruction, shelter building),leaderless activities (developing aleader based upon group activityphysical problem solving andfeedback), confidence course.- Evening routines consisting ofperiods with directors, barrackinspections, night stalk, publicspeaking and preparation for thefollowing day’s activities.

Their commitmentto 12 days of militarytraining was under thewatchful eyes of theYouth Life SkillsInstructors fromTrenthamMilitary Campwho, throughencouragement, guidance and

direction, gave students theopportunity to conquer theirfears, challenge themselvesand expand their horizons.

Students had to endureliving in a barracksenvironment with six otheracademies, learning alongthe way how to get alongwith other academymembers and themselves.

Comradeship is anintegral part of teamwork. Some of the activities thatthey did this past two weekshave been extremelydemanding both physicallyand mentally and thatwithout the assistance offellow team members andstaff, students may not haveachieved all that they did.

Without integrity the team islost. The Inter Services AcademyCompetitions are an integral partof the course the trophies forSports, Longest Day and Drillhighlight the teamwork requiredto compete and win them.

It was a great effort overall byall students who achieved theirgoals in a supportiveenvironment, encouraged byinstructors and academy staff.Well done.

HOROWHENUA College dramastudent Roha Taiapa who haswon the Sheilah Winn FestivalCup two years running for beststudent directed scene.

Double, double toil and trouble, mental asylum and cauldronsbubble.

A chilling and rivetingperformance of the well-knownwitches scene fromShakespeare’s Macbeth sawHorowhenua College dramastudent Roha Taiapa awardedbest student-directed scene for asecond year running at theUniversity of Otago SheilahWinn Shakespeare FestivalRegional Festival.

Horowhenua College was theonly school from the districttaking part in the regional final, held at Otaki College onSaturday that included StPatrick’s College, Aotea College,Otaki College, ParaparaumuCollege and Kapiti College, which submitted half of the 20total entries. Each college had toperform one 15-minute teacherdirected scene and could submitany number of five-minutestudent directed scenes.

Roha said his scene cametogether in about two weeks. Itwas while rummaging throughcostumes that Roha had the ideato set his scene in a mentalasylum, ‘‘where Macbeth wouldbe a new patient and the girls[who are already inmates] wouldpretend to be the doctors’’.

‘I love directing crazy, scarystuff and I knew the girls [SierraTafeaalii, Sina Moala, VikatoliaFinau] could pull it off.’’

Last year Roha won theSheilah Winn Festival Cup forbest student directed scene withhis version of Othello in which healso acted. Each year, since firstperforming at the regionalfestival in 2010, the college has

won an award, including the cupfor outstanding performance in asupporting role and outstandingdesign.

As this year’s regionalfinalists, Roha and his cast havebeen invited to take part in theNational Shakespeare Festival inWellington, in June, wheredrama students take part inworkshops and performances, and can be selected to perform atthe Globe Theatre in London.

Horowhenua College head ofdrama Faith Perry said she wasproud of all her students, many

of whom were performing on thefestival stage for the first time.

‘‘Their talent and enthusiasmwas an inspiration and theyperformed with a polish andprofessionalism that belied theirinexperience. I would like tocongratulate them all for a jobwell done and thank everyoneinvolved for their help andsupport.’’

A scene from Romeo andJuliet, the only other student-directed entry by the college, sawdebut directors Ryan Burnelland Bailey Darwin take on the

lead roles as the Nurse and Julietrespectively. Ms Perry directed amontage of scenes from Romeoand Juliet in homage to the films

inspired by the star-crossedlovers, which involved 21 first-timers at the festival.

‘‘While it’s always lovely to berecognised and we all love to win, what is most important is thatthe students are learning lifeskills through the performingarts, which also help achieveacademically.’’

Method:

1. Chop the chorizo into rounds and set aside.Bring a large saucepan to the boil, adding twoteaspoons of salt. Cook the pasta for threeminutes or until cooked. Drain thoroughly.

2. Pour the olive oil and pesto into the empty panand gently heat before returning the drainedpasta to the pan. Add the chopped chorizoand olives to the pasta and stir until all theingredients are well coated with the oil and pesto.

3. Serve into warm plates. As a final touch to pasta, nothing beats fresh parmesan cheese. Gratesome onto the finished dish when served.

TIP: As an attractive alternative to grating yourparmesan, try using a potato peeler for larger, curly shavings of cheese.

Choosing an ENERGY STAR heatpump could save you $150 a year on running costs, compared to a non-qualified model. Some heat pumps struggle to keep up between 5 and0°C, when they are more prone to icing up. That’swhy ENERGY STAR now includes a requirement that’sdesigned to ensure a correctly sized ENERGY STARheat pump will perform efficiently in this temperaturerange.

Log Fires:Power price rises grows wood fire demandIncreasing power costs leading into winter is a keydriver for homeowners to investigate more reliable, cost effective ways to heat their homes. With around35% of the energy used in the average New Zealandhousehold being used for heating, it makes good senseand dollars to do so.According to one of the country’s largest wood firemanufacturers, Metro Fires, rising electricity and gasprices were forcing more and more “value conscious”

kiwis to go back to the tried and true heating efficiencyand reliability of a wood fire.“Ideally the temperature in our homes during wintershould be between 18°C and 22°C – and not dropbelow 16°C for bedrooms. For children and the elderlythe temperature should be a minimum of 20ºC. Bychoosing to heat your home with a wood fire, youhave protection against the elements and the selfsufficiency to cook and heat your water if the powergoes out.”“An average household uses approximately 4500kWhof electricity over winter, with around 40% beingused to produce hot water, so up to 1800kW hours ofelectricity can be used per household just to heat waterand at around 25c a kWh, that’s around $450” he said.

The Lift Off Levin Balloon FestivalThe Lift Off Levin Balloon Festivalhas become an important Easter tradition in the Horowhenua. It is also a traditionfor many Balloonists who say that the event is their favourite because of our greatweather and friendly approach. This year our Balloonmiester, Denis Hall neededheart surgery and that meant the Balloon Committee did not know if he would beavailable. As a result they were in no position to raise money for the event becausethere was no way of telling if he would be repaired and reassembled in time toactually do it. Then, literally only hours before the official cancellation was to bemade, help came in the form of well-known Levin philanthropist, Helen Blake.Mrs Blake generously provided sufficient funding for a slightly modified format. The decision was made to do the night-glow at the Levin Domain on Easter Sundayand the balloonists were invited. Twelve were still available and that’s how manywe have. We look forward to welcoming them – and the public - to anotherexciting “Lift Off Levin” experience.

US plantto becomeBMW’sbiggestproducer

THE coupe-styled X4 is the latest modelto be built at the Spartanburg, SouthCarolina plant.

News that BMW Group is expandingcapacity at its United Statesmanufacturing plant in Spartanburg,South Carolina has been accompaniedby confirmation of a new X7 model — thelargest BMW X vehicle yet.

The Spartanburg plant is BMW’sglobal centre of production for X models(other than the smallest X1 model) and aUS$1 billion ($1.16b) investment willachieve a 50 per cent rise in annualproduction capacity to 450,000, up from300,000 and making it the biggest ofBMW’s production plants.

The BMW X3, X5, X5 and X6 modelshave been manufactured so far inSpartanburg and last week the newBMW X4 Sport Activity Coupe startedproduction there.

‘‘With the BMW X7, we are developinganother, larger X model, which we willproduce at our US plant for our worldmarkets — once again underscoring ourcommitment to the US,’’ said BMW AGchairman Norbert Reithofer at aceremony in Spartanburg tocommemorate 20 years of production inthe US.

The X7 is expected to go intoproduction from 2016 and will be a seven-seat model based on a stretched versionof the recently launched thirdgeneration X5 platform.

Since the start of production in 1994,Spartanburg has built more than 2.6million vehicles for BMW customersaround the world.

The BMW X3, X5, X5 M, X6 and X6 Mare all produced at the plant.

In the near future, a plug-in hybridversion of the BMW X5 will also beproduced there. A total of 297,326vehicles were made in Spartanburg lastyear with about 70 per cent of productionbeing exported.

During last week’s ceremony, BMWboard of management member forproduction Harald Kruger talked aboutthe importance of the US to BMWGroup’s overall production strategy.

‘‘The BMW Group aims for a goodbalance of growth between all marketsand continents,’’ Kruger said.

‘‘The Spartanburg plant is animportant building block in ourinternational network of 28 productionand assembly facilities in 13 countriestoday. It makes a vital contribution toprofitable, globally-balanced growth.

‘‘The BMW plant in Spartanburg isthe best example of our successfulstrategy of ‘production follows themarket’,’’ he said. ‘‘The state of SouthCarolina has supported us as a valuableand reliable partner throughout our20-year involvement in the region andplayed a decisive part in making the USour second home.’’

GREAT FOREST CHALLENGE

The pressure is on — D DayHi, I am Tania and I am training for the10km event at Great Forest Events April12, 2014. Each week I will update you withmy progress. Hopefully I will see you atthe event tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the big day! I have had somuch encouragement this past week, thesupport from the community has beenamazing. I have come across so manysmiley faces, have been given so manywords of praise from everyone. GreatForest is all people have spoken to beabout everywhere I have been; at thepool, in the supermarket, along thebeach.

I have been given lots and lots ofadvice, coaching tips galore and I havetaken it all in my stride and cometomorrow morning I know I am prepared.

Over the past week I have not gonecrazy with my training, the last 5-6 days Ihave tried to keep things ticking over, juggling work stuff and moderate butquick exercise here and there, constantlythinking about my first big event onSaturday.

I’m excited that I will get to see somany familiar faces on the day, at thestart, along the track and definitely at thefinish line. Along with the familiar facesthere will be lots of people fromthroughout New Zealand and overseas so

it is going to be a great day.Ten weeks have gone fast, I have come

a long way with both my exercise levels

and most importantly my eating, healthyhabits are key.

I have been concentrating more on myeating this week, thinking protein andenergy food, hydrating all the time is soimportant and I can’t get enough of fruitfruit fruit.

Tomorrow I will be doing the 10kmrun and I’m going to be stoked wherever Icome over the finish line, it’s somethingout of my comfort zone, entering was abig step but it’s been an awesomeconfidence booster and it’s changed mefor the better in so many ways.

I’m already thinking ahead of theGreat Forest Events, how I will keep myhead focused on maintaining the goodhabits I have come to know over the last10 weeks.

Looking forward to new goals, but Ihave to get across that finish linetomorrow.

See you at Waitarere Forest tomorrowHorowhenua.
