Otaki MP Nathan Guy haswelcomed the final greenlight for the KapitiExpressway, with theSupreme Court dismissinga final appeal.

This is an earlyChristmas present forKapiti commuters andmeans NZTA can beginwork this month, which isgreat news, he said.

The construction will

create 1000 local jobs, andonce complete it will be amajor boost to the region’seconomic development.

My spade is ready and Ican’t wait for the first sodturning, said Mr Guy.

The decision comes ontop of the Prime Ministerrecently confirming thatTransmission Gullyconstruction will beginnext year.

Once the entire routefrom Levin to WellingtonAirport is complete, it willreduce peak journey timesby 40 minutes.

‘‘The opponents of thisroad have well and trulyhad their say,’’ Mr Guysaid.

‘‘It’s now time to moveon, and for all of us to worktogether and maximise thebenefits for Kapiti.’’

Mayor defendedI do not believe that the mayor hasever written a letter in response toany of your reader comments, but onthis occasion I personally feel I mustdefend the ridiculous assertion madeby Mrs Paton that the mayor is adictator. I see it as completely out oforder for this one regular critic tomake such an absurd statementwhen she has been allowed to com-ment regularly at most council meet-ings.

I feel this is a slight on myself andmy fellow councillors as we all abideby the protocols of fairness andequity.

As set out in our Standing Orders, the mayor absolutely has the right todecide who can speak at councilmeetings and he has shown extra-ordinary leniency on many occa-sions. It would have definitely beenout of order if the mayor had knownMrs Paton was in support of whatwas proposed and had let her speak, whilst denying others that opportun-ity.

Pike RiverThe third anniversary of the PikeRiver mine disaster approaches. Thewhole of New Zealand stopped as thenews of 29 miners were declared lostbecause it was too dangerous torecover their bodies.

After visiting Reefton and speak-ing to locals, I learnt that the minehad been five years in the planning asan open cast mine, but due to pres-sure from the ‘greenies’ they were

forced underground so as to save raresnails.

The human cost of saving theenvironment seems ridiculous. Thismine could only have been seen fromthe air and would have impacted asmall portion of the wildlife. Mean-while, the local ‘greenies’ who hadopposed the mining still burn coal inthe winter for heating.

New Zealanders held a vigil of oneminute’s silence for the 29 deadminers. Their lives were tragicallysilenced in a moment.

It appears that snails have agreater right to live than mankind.Yeah right!

Swearing inRe the Horowhenua District CouncilSwearing-in Ceremony.

I was present at the recent HDCSwearing in Ceremony of the newcouncil and Foxton communityboard.

It was a wonderful and appropri-ate occasion to celebrate the end ofthe election campaign and to con-gratulate the new councillors.

The mayor, in his closing address, talked quite a bit about theappropriate and inappropriate. He found it appropriate toacknowledge and thank his ownfamily yet gave no opportunityfor the councillors to acknow-ledge and thank theirs. In fact,he said that it would be inappro-priate.

However, the most inappro-priate act of the evening was hisacknowledgement of an ex-councillor who, quite frankly, had been dumped in the elec-tion. He was called to the front

to be thanked and presented with hisname plate etc.

I felt for the two newly electedcouncillors and their families fromthe Kere Kere ward whose ceremonyit was.

I mean no disrespect to the previ-ous councillor, but this was not hisevening and if the mayor had wantedto have something special for him, itshould have been elsewhere. Justinappropriate.

Council truceRe: Horowhenua District Council hascalled a truce with Ratepayers’ Associa-tion. I am looking forward to the changeof culture around the table at councilmeetings.

In the past, the councillors have justfollowed the mayor’s lead without reallyquestioning the staff recommendations. It is going to be very interestinglistening and watching how all the newand re-elected councillors participate atquestion time from now on.

A fresh start works both ways.Ratepayers and residents in the districtneed to see value for their money fromthe representatives around the counciltable and the council staff.

The annual report for the year ended30 June 2013 show that we have 114council employees plus the chief execu-tive officer, with the 10 councillors andthe mayor plus the five members of theFoxton Community Board, whichequates to having 1 governance personper 233 residents in the district.

The district council is the biggestemployer in the district and it isresponsible for millions of dollars of theratepayers money.

It would be prudent for the council tocontinue to improve their communica-tion with the public who are literally theshareholders.

A good start was made with theadoption of the annual report onWednesday November 6 when theyresolved to include a full list of namesand salaries of Foxton CommunityBoard members in future annualreports — well done. The council islooking to start afresh and it is a step inthe right direction.

‘‘18,500 were killed and 50,000wounded. At that time NewZealand’s population was 1.1million. Over a period of fouryears we literally lost an entiregeneration. Small communitieslike us in Horowhenua felt everysingle loss of life.’’

FRIENDLY FIRE: Students from Levin School took the chance to have their phototaken with White Ribbon Ride leader Aaron Morrison, a member of the defence forcemotorcycle club, the Patriots.

Taking to road to pushanti-violence messageBy PETER FRANKLIN

It was all about leathers, big motorcyclesand a serious message — stoppingviolence against women — on Sundaywhen more than 60 riders arrived atLevin’s Adventure Park on the annualWhite Ribbon ride.

Locals gathered at the park to greetand meet the riders, most of whom hadstarted their annual week-long trek fromRotorua, picking up others as theystopped at towns on their way south toWellington.

Horowhenua District Mayor BrendanDuffy supported the cause and challengedmen of all ages in the district to take thepledge to never commit, condone orremain silent about violence towardswomen.

The riders were treated to some localentertainment, including from LevinSchool.

White Ribbon is an internationalcampaign that asks men to show theywon’t tolerate or remain silent aboutviolence towards women. It originated asa men’s movement in Canada and is nowpart of the United Nations annualcalendar. The Families Commission tooka leadership role in New Zealand in 2006and the campaign now focuses on thewhole of November, culminating onMonday November 25, White Ribbon Day.

White Ribbon national coordinator

Rob McCann said the White Ribbon is acampaign to change attitudes andbehaviours around men’s violencetowards women.

‘‘This is led by men for men. This isn’tabout finger pointing or apportioningblame. It is about recognising that this is aserious problem, accepting the fact thatabuse could be happening around eachand every one of us, and acknowledgingthat it’s critical to step from the side-lineand take action.’’

White Ribbon promotes a violence-freeculture change in New Zealand and inorder to facilitate this, organisesnationally-led projects to support localinitiatives, like the work being done byHALT.

Horowhenua has one of the worstrecords for family violence in NewZealand. Nationally, one in three womenwill experience partner violence at somepoint in their lives. Less than 20 per centof abuse cases are reported .

More than 3500 convictions arerecorded against men each year forassaults on women.

On average, 14 women a year are killedby their partners or ex-partners.

‘Technology iswhat drives ourbusiness. We areabout quality andperformance andthese are currentlythe best garmentsin the world in ouropinion.’— JASON HAIRSTON, KUIU

president and founder

Levana Textiles in Levin has produced aworld-first for wool — a merino woolfabric that pulls sweat and moisture awayfrom skin and evaporates it from thegarment.

Using the recently acquired Nuyarntechnology, Levana Textiles has created afabric that is more comfortable andlighter to wear, dries faster and is warmerthan standard 100 per cent merino woolgarments — and it’s been road tested tothe extreme by leading United Statesoutdoor apparel company KUIU, which istaking the new technology to the worldmarket place early next year.

KUIU president and founder JasonHairston personally tested Nuyarngarments from below zero temperaturesup to 35°C.

‘‘When we go on a trip to test theseproducts, we take just one shirt each for 14days straight and we never take it off. Then you know if it’s durable, if it wearswell, if it’s truly comfortable and performsthe way it’s supposed to.’’

His company specialises in sellinghunting wear and accessories, targeting aUS market of 10 million hunters as well asshipping all over the world.

‘‘Technology is what drives ourbusiness. We are about quality andperformance and these are currently thebest garments in the world in ouropinion.’’

Andy Wynne, chief executive of TheMerino Company under which LevanaTextiles operates, said the new spinningtechnique ‘‘rights the wrongs’’ of merinowool. ‘‘Merino wool is wonderful. It’s anti-

odour, it absorbs perspiration, but the onedownfall is that it doesn’t know what to dowith the perspiration it retains.’’Vigorous testing of Nuyarn againstconventional ring spun merino fabricswas undertaken by AgResearch earlierthis year, showing Nuyarn was 40 per centlighter, 35 per cent stretchier, dried fivetimes faster, was 25 per cent warmer, 16per cent stronger and held its shape.

Levana Textiles, operating in Levin formore than 50 years, is part of The MerinoCompany that has offices and factories inLevin, Christchurch and Vietnam, withretail outlets in Otaki, Ohakune andChristchurch, and online atwww.merinooutlet.com. Levana Textilesdesigns, dyes, knits and produces allfabrics in New Zealand, sellingnationwide and overseas, including toLouis Vuitton and other top Europeanfashion houses.

Family candid abouttragedy and sufferingBy SandyMyhre

CATHARTIC: The Guy family, from left: Callum,Bryan, AnnaMacdonald and Jo after the jury foundEwenMacdonald not guilty of themurder of ScottGuy. MARKMITCHELL

Scott Guy: His Parents’Story of Love, Betrayal,Murder andCourageby Tony FarringtonAntares Publishing, $35..................................................In 2010, in the early hours of a coldwinter’s day inManawatu, 31-year-oldScott Guywas brutallymurdered in ashotgun blast that sent 260 pellets rippingthrough his body. Just twomonths laterhis widow, Kylee, gave birth to theirsecond son.It took ninemonths for the police to

make an arrest and, when they did, itshocked a nation. EwenMacdonald, husband to Scott’s sister Anna, son-in-law to Bryan and Jo Guy and a partner inthe family farm, was chargedwithmurder and other offences. If these traumatic events were

sufficient, it wasn’t to end there for theGuy family of Feilding. In just three yearssince themurder, Scott’s grandfather,Grahame, died; his cousin, Jo Guy’snephew, AndrewMarshall, wasmurdered inWestern Australia; EwenMacdonald was acquitted on themurdercharge but sentenced for other crimes ashis wife, Anna, announced shewasfinishing their relationship; Greg King, the lawyer who successfully defendedMacdonald on themurder charge, wasfound dead in a street overlookingWellington Harbour.Howmuch can one family cope with?

In a new book titled simply Scott Guy, hisparents—Bryan and Jo Guy— chroniclethis multifaceted real-life story inextremis. What’s remarkable is not somuch the catalogue of convulsive eventsthe book examines, even though each inisolation could bend the brave, but thesheer openness of opinions expressed onthe page at a timewhen itwould have been easier to runfor the hills and hide in a hole.Kerikeri author Tony

Farrington seems to havebeen offered extraordinaryaccess to the thoughts andfeelings of this couple whograppled with the emotionalcomplexities of one of theirown beingmurdered by one oftheir own, an exhaustivepolice investigation and therelentless attention of thecountry’s press. Jo Guy gavethe author the intimatejournal she started a dayafter her son’s death andwhich not even her husbandhas read.‘‘I’m a gut-instinct person

and I think Tonygot us,’’ she says.‘‘But I wonderedwhether I shouldhand overmyjournals because itbaredmy inner-most soul.’’She would write

everymorning ofthe loss of her sonandwhen Ewen

Macdonald was arrested she poured herheart on to the page:‘‘Ewenmust have been sick in the

head. How could he not have thought ofhis beautiful wife, our Anna, and theirfour special children? Their whole livesturned upside down and ours alongwiththem.‘‘Two absolutely beautiful girls,

Anna and Kylee, without husbands andleft with beautiful children facedwiththings they never should even havedreamt of experiencing. Ewen haschanged somany lives forever.’’The book reflects Bryan and Jo Guy’s

editorial input and both say it was acathartic exercise. As the sub-headingstates, this is also a story of courage.‘‘In a homicide nothing is sacred,

everything is delved into,’’ says Bryan.‘‘There is somuch in our lives themediadidn’t know about and somany thingshappened in ourmarriage way beforeScott was killed that if we hadn’t madecertain choices 20 years agowewouldn’thave survived this.’’The retelling of themanifold aspects

associated with this murder could easilyhave become a relentlessmiserymemory but Farrington’s maturity andexperience as a writer is evident as hedeftly weaves a cohesive, absorbingnarrative throughout. Neither the Guysnor Farrington point to a culprit butleave readers to draw their ownconclusions.

LOOKING BACK

Now we are sevenBy PEARL FORSTERandMICHAELDALLY

LVN201113splhistory

DARFUR refugee camp, Chad, Central Africa. Forty per cent of Africans are under 15 years old.

Near the end of 2011, the world’spopulation clicked over to 7billion people. That’s according toUnited Nation’s estimates, and allthe predictors point to the 8billion mark being only a decadeaway. Like all such statistics, theimportance lies in the trend; is itaccelerating or decelerating?Historically, the planet saw itsfirst billion people by the year1804; the next billion was reached123 years later, in 1927. From thenon the pace quickened; it tookonly 33 years to reach 3 billion; 14years to hit 4 billion. Then came aplateau, or steady trend, of about12 years between billions.

The good news is that whilethe total is still expected to risefrom 7 billion to 8 it should take 13years; then from 8 to 9 billion, 16years; and 9 to 10 billion, 22 years. So, long-term, the pace of increaseis slowing down. All this, as theUN points out, does not allow forfactors such as wars, globalwarming, prosperity or poverty, and family planning; the list is along one. The bad news is thatglobal figures on populationgrowth must be viewedregionally; developed countrieslike New Zealand have slowpopulation growth rates whileun-developed countries havemuch faster rates. These poorernations have many more mouthsto feed with much less income. The really big concern is Africa;right now it has one billion peoplebut this could become 3.6 billionthis century. Wars, inequality, poverty and drought — Africa has

them all in abundance. They areseen as the justification forAfrican families to have so manychildren. Some will survive tosupport others, since our conceptof the Welfare State doesn’t existin Africa.

New Zealand’s populationfigures make interesting reading. As a nation, we are growingslowly but steadily toward the 5million mark. Health, welfare, education and income are allrelatively stable here, makingNew Zealand a desirabledestination for immigrants.Their numbers are boosting ourdeclining natural replacementbirths over deaths statistics. Thevast stretches of oceansurrounding our islands protectus from unwanted refugees likethe boat people desperate enoughto entrust their lives to thepeople-smugglers they pay to getthem to Australia and Italy.Neither do we have borders forillegals to be trucked over, norrivers for wetbacks to swimacross.

The year to June 2013 saw NewZealand’s population increase by37,700. That’s a rise of 0.9 per cent, compared with a 0.6 per centgrowth the previous year. Sothere is still an upward trend, butit’s only slight. Our naturalincrease rate, though, our birthscompared with deaths, is down.Fewer babies are being born;immigration is the factor drivingour population increase.

Regional statistics containonly a few surprises; Aucklandexpanded substantially last year;the West Coast had a dramaticdrop in population, and

Manawatu is growing faster thanHorowhenua.

The South Island’s populationis the surprise. Even though ithas a much smaller base, it isgrowing faster than the NorthIsland.

All of this means rather whateach one of us takes it to mean. One view is that fewerimmigrants might mean more

jobs for locals; another view isthat we need a certain type ofimmigrant (well-educated orskilled, willing manual workers, etc ) to keep the economygrowing.

Another perception is thatimmigrants should have alocation factor built in, forcingthem to locate in certain areas, asthe Ten Pound Pom had to.

Christchurch, for example, islooking for willing workers tohelp with the re-build.

Whatever view one holds (andthere are many) perhaps we haveDivine Providence or simple goodluck to thank for the fact that wehave been spared the extremes ofpopulation growth forced on somany countries, as we all racetoward the 8 billion mark.

New coach making a big splash

LVN061113TWswimclub3

NEW FACE: Romanian Albert Szilagyi is the new coach at the Levin Swimming Club.

By TANYAWOOD

When Albert Szilagyi says he graduatedfrom Transylvania University it generallyraises a smile. No garlic or stakes in sight,Levin’s new swimming coach comesarmed only with a bachelor of swimmingand basketball, five years’ experience inRomania coaching swimmers to nationallevel and a year’s swim coaching in TeAwamutu, in 2007.

Lured back to New Zealand by itssporting lifestyle, friendly people, community spirit and large number ofswimming clubs, Albert took over as headcoach of the Levin Swimming Club in Junethis year.

He says swimming is a long-termsport.‘‘You can’t expect to be a championwithout a good training background froman early age, about seven or eight, up to 14or 15. Younger swimmers have aerobic andendurance stamina but not the strength intheir arms for building up speed until theyget older.

‘‘To reach the top levels in swimmingyou need to start slow, slow in the first fewyears, and gradually progress until about12 or 13 years of age when you can start toreally build up the speed.’’

The 30-year-old, who also plays for aLevin basketball team, believes he bringsdifferent training skills learned in Europe.

‘‘Swimming is not just in the water. Ifyou see how Olympic swimmers prepare, alot of training is outside the water, including stretching, land-based trainingand mental preparation.’’

In just six months, Albert says he hasalready seen an improvement in hisstudents’ focus. ‘‘My belief is that if youdon’t focus your mind on what you need todo, your body won’t work. I like to explainto my students why they need toconcentrate on certain things and how itwill benefit them.’’

What motivates him is seeing studentsachieving their goals. ‘‘That’s the mostwonderful feeling when you can see in

their eyes they are happy.’’The Levin Swimming Club caters for

children of all ages and president RolandHuria says Albert brings a lot of fun totraining sessions.

‘‘Kids have got to want to swim andenjoy it, and I see a lot more smiles on facesand definite improvements.

‘‘We are always looking for newswimmers who want to be competitive butalso enjoy the sport.’’

The Levin club has produced a number

of national and international swimmers inits 101 years, including Olympians Deanand Steven Kent, 1980s CommonwealthGames rep, Pamela Croad, and LesleyParkin, national swimmer in the 1960s andlater club coach.

Albert believes the club already has ahandful of swimmers with the talent andpotential to make it to national level, butsays swimming is a long-term investment.

‘‘We are hoping to get more communityinvolvement and sponsorship so our kids

can compete at more regional and nationalevents.’’

Levin Swimming Club is holding anopen club night with competition races, sausage sizzle and spot prizes on Friday, from 5.30pm, at the Levin Aquatic Centrefor club members and any childreninterested in having a go and finding outmore about the club.

Friends and parents are also welcome tojoin the fun and support the swimmers.Entry by gold coin or $5 per family.

Luke doubles up onsilver at world champs

SILVER SUCCESS: Luke Cherrington kicked hisway to two silver medals in the team events at theTaekwondo World Champs in Spain last month.

By TANYAWOOD

Sixteen-year-old Levin studentLuke Cherrington kicked hisway to two silver medals in hisfirst Taekwondo WorldChamps last month.

Luke was part of a 40-plusstrong national team, including seniors, thatcompeted against 51 othercountries in Spain fromOctober 23 to 27.

The Waiopehu Collegestudent, now 17, helped fellowteammates to second place intwo junior team events — thepower test (breaking throughboards) and special technique(jump kicks) — againsteventual winners Poland andthird placed Argentina.

Luke also competed in theindividual junior sparringand power testing events butwas not placed.

He said the power test andspecial technique events arehis specialty, describing thechampionships not so much astough but ‘‘just more of achallenge compared tonational competitions’’.

‘‘It was a good experiencethough. I didn’t find it toonerve-wracking, I was onlyworried if I stuffed mytechnique that I’d be lettingthe team down and wholecountry down.’’

Pre-competition training involved oneweekend a month at an Auckland trainingcamp for about a year, and fundraising bythe Ohau club where Luke trains and isnow assistant coach, helped towards all histravel costs.

A national under-18 Grand Championin 2001, Luke has been sparring and

kicking since he was four years old andsays the martial art is simply part of hislife and ‘‘just what I do’’.

‘‘Going for gold in the world champs isthe next step,’’ he said.

The New Zealand team took third placeon the overall medal table behind Polandand Ireland, with eight gold, seven silverand 11 bronze medals.

Neem products have all kinds of uses

NEEDING PROTECTION: Give your rhododendrons the best chance of flourishing by keeping on top of pests.

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

I have had a few inquiries this weekabout some seasonal pests such ascodlin moths.

For control of codlin moth in apples, pears and walnuts I have learnt fromgardeners that sprinkling Neem TreeGranules under the trees at the end ofwinter can help with control.

A lot of the moths are under the trees inthe soil pupating, waiting to emerge whenthe apples have formed and conditions arefavourable.

This being the case the neem granulesthat smell as they break down will confusethem. When they emerge as moths, theywill not sense/smell the tree above.Sitting on the ground is dangerous as thebirds will find them and eat them.

What you can do at this time is place asmall container of treacle in an onion bagand hang in the tree. This acts as apheromone trap for the male moths.Check your trap every few days and whenyou see a few moths, you know that theyare active. Start spraying the youngapples with neem tree oil every seven daystill no more activity is noticed in thetreacle. If you add Raingard to the neemoil spray then the spray will not wash offin rain and you can spray every seven to10 days.

Easy, and once again inexpensivewithout harming honey bees or bumblebees.

Grass grub beetles are now active andthey can cause a lot of damage at nightwhen they feed on your garden plants andtrees.

The adults will start to emerge in mild

conditions, when the soil temperaturereaches about 10 degrees. They then mate, fly, eat and lay eggs in the short space oftime between dusk and early evening. Asthey tend to fly towards light, you aremost likely to know they’re there whenthe flying beetles hit your lighted windowpanes.

This attraction to the light has becomeone of our best weapons in controlling thepest in its adult stage. You can set up agrass grub beetle trap by placing a trough, such as the one used when wall-papering,directly underneath a window near agrassed area.

Fill the trough with water to about two-thirds of its capacity, then place a film ofkerosene on top of the water.

Put a bright light in the window, thebeetles fly towards the lit window, hit theglass and fall into the trough.

The kerosene acts as a trap, preventingthe fallen beetles from climbing out.

You can extend this method to areasaway from the house by using a glass tank, such as might be used for an aquarium.Place the empty tank into a traycontaining several inches of water (andthe kerosene), and position a light insidethe glass tank.

By adding a sheet of ply or somethingsimilar over the top of the tank, you willensure that the light shines only throughthe sides of the tank above the waitingwater and kerosene. It is better to use adome-shaped battery-powered lightrather than an ordinary torch for this jobas the bigger light makes the trap moreeffective.

If the tray and tank are raised off theground and placed on something like atable, you will get an even better result.

However you set up your beetle trap, this is a very good method to dispose ofthe pests. Simply get rid of all the beetlescaught the next morning. Run thissystem from just before dusk to about twoor three hours after sunset.

Another method is to take a torch and, after dark, go out and check the plantsthat are being eaten.

If you find the beetles then spray themwith a solution of key pyrethrum andneem oil.

The pyrethrum is a quick knockdownand like fly spray soon takes care of thebeetles you spray.

Repeat this night after night untilthere are no more beetles eating your

plants.Thrips in rhododendrons is a problem

at this time of the year. The drought last summer, followed by a

mild winter, has seen a great increase intheir populations and now lots of silveryleaves caused by their feeding.

I have a simple solution for this, nomatter how big your rhododendrons are.

Take a strip of material similar to theflannel used in electric blankets.

The strip should be about 40mm wideand sufficient in length to wrap all theway around the trunk of yourrhododendron.

Next soak the strip in straight neemtree oil and then wrap around the trunknear the base or before the first branches.Use a couple of drawing pins to hold inplace and then wrap in plastic wrap tokeep from weathering. Note the date youapply and remove exactly one monthlater, failure to do so may result in ringbarking the trunk and then the death ofthe Rhododendron.

On smaller trees where it is easy to doso spray under and over the foliage withneem tree oil. Neem Tree Granules spreadon the ground under the rhododendronwill help give longer term control after thecurrent batch of thrips are cleared.

Not harmful to bees and otherbeneficial insects (or yourself) neemproducts are an obvious, better solutionwhen compared to dangerous man madechemicals.■ For any gardening problems or questionsringme at 0800 466-464 (Palmerston North357-0606)

Horizons Regional Council roadsafety coordinator Debbie Webster isreminding motorists to leave at least12 hours between bottle and throttlefor safer roads this festive season.

“What many people don’t realise isthat alcohol can stay in your systemfor a number of hours after you havestopped drinking,” Ms Webster says.

“In one recent case, a young manstopped by Police at a checkpointtested over the legal limit of 400mgof alcohol per litre of breath, despitenot drinking for several hours.

“He advised that his last drink wasat 3am; 12 hours prior to beginninghis 6 hour journey home. He nowfaces charges of drink driving, loss oflicence and a hefty fine.”

On average, the adult body canprocess about one standard drinkper hour. However, the number ofstandard drinks someone consumesdepends on what they are drinkingso it pays to check the labels on the

backs of bottles, cans or casks forthe standard drink content.

There are also a number of myths outthere around alcohol consumption.Ms Webster says while eating beforeyou start drinking and having foodavailable throughout is always a goodidea, you cannot rely on food to loweryour blood alcohol content.

The only thing that can truly reduceyour blood alcohol limit is time.

Drivers under 20 years of age needto be aware that they can be chargedwith drink driving for having theslightest amount of alcohol in theirsystem.

Ms Webster says one way toremember is to have ‘at least12 hours bottle to throttle’. Thismeans allowing at least 12 hoursafter drinking before getting behindthe wheel of a car.

“Again, the amount of time requiredwill depend on how much alcoholyou have consumed,” she says.

Don’t get caught out– the morning after!

BLUE BEAT

Vehicles targetedwith GRAEME JARVISCommunity Constable

Once again it has been abusy week for police in theHorowhenua, dealing witha wide range of offencesand calls for assistance.

Of particular note havebeen burglaries wherevehicles have been stolen, along with a range ofhousehold goods.

A green Holden ClubSport, registration numberCEH 622, was taken in aburglary in Hobson St atthe end of last week. Therehas been a possiblesighting of this vehicleheading towards Shannon,so it is possible it has beentaken out of the district.

A burglary on RoslynRd did not go completely toplan, when the car takenfrom the property wasdriven over a bank acrossthe road. Some other itemswere taken however.

It both cases keys havebeen located inside thehouse. We are probably allguilty of leaving keys tovehicles where they can befound, so this is a timelywake up call to us all.

I would urge everyoneto take measures to make itharder for vehicles to beeasily targeted if you areunlucky enough to bebroken into.

A boat securely lockedon a driveway on SH57 hasalso been stolen. The 15foot Fyran aluminium boat

and trailer, powered with a40hp Johnson motor, has aregistration number ofD178K. The boat is paintedwith the name Huhu.

Vehicles featureheavily this week, as aNissan Safari was stolenfrom a property on BruceRd last week. The vehicleis in poor condition, has noregistration, and was notmobile, so must have beentowed from the property. And continuing the theme, vehicles are still beingtargeted in the northeastern quadrant of Levin.Sadly, valuables are stillbeing left in vehicles, sonot only is damage beingcaused during the entry, property and valuables arebeing taken, adding to theowners problems.

I received another letterfrom a concerned resident

last week that has thepotential to be anotherscam.

While much of thecontent is all too familiar, this one claims you canshare in a huge fortune leftby a benefactor. It did notimmediately ask formoney, nor bank accountdetails.

On this occasion itsimply asked to registeryour interest online, andfurther details would besent later. I have no doubtthat if anyone does reply tothis type of letter, then thenext contact will surelyask for either money toconfirm your interest, orbank account details.Either way, the outcomewill be the same — you willbe out of pocket.

My advice for anyonereceiving unsolicitedletters, phone calls, emailsor texts asking for moneyor personal details of anysort, is to ignore themcompletely.

On a final note, policehave heardunsubstantiated claimsthat burglaries are beingscoped out in advance;with potential propertiesbeing identified with asticker on the letterbox.

This is a new twist to anold problem, and while wecannot confirm thepractice, it should be easyfor householders to takenote when visiting theletterbox each day.

Family violence doesn’t take a holidayFor many childrenChristmas is not a time ofanticipation and joy, but ofstress and fear as familyviolence escalates over theperiod.

Financial stress, alcoholand pressure to spend morethan people can afford canquickly escalate intophysical and emotionalabuse. While kids lovepresents, a calm and happyhome will mean much moreto them at Christmas andthroughout the year.

This is a time when wecan all say family violenceis not ok and reach out tohelp families we know.

Let friends and familyknow that you are there tosupport them, and provide asafe place for them to come. One of the best things afamily can do is make asafety plan of what they willdo, where they will go andwho they can ask for help, ifor when the argumentsstart. It’s important toremember that family

violence isn’t an inevitableresult of growing up in aviolent home, of job loss, increased stress or a few toomany drinks. Overcomingfamily violence is both verypossible and something tobe very proud of.

There are people andagencies ready and willingto work alongside familiesto help them create thosechanges in their lives.■ Go towww.halt.org.nz tosee some of the options or ring0800 456-450.

Look out for each otherBy PETER FRANKLIN

BE ALERT: Keep an eye on neighbours’ properties tohelp stop crime.

Good neighbours provideyear round safety.

Getting to know yourneighbours and starting aneighbourhood supportgroup has so manybenefits according toHorowhenuaNeighbourhood Supportco-ordinator WendyForeman.

She says it helps reducecrime in the communityby encouraging people tonotice strangers to thearea or unfamiliarvehicles.

Having a group ofcaring people around youthat gives a reassuringsense of peace of mind inall sorts of situations.

Mrs Foreman says theimportant thing is tocommunicate with yourneighbours, if you aregoing away have someoneclear your letterbox, leavea key with them so that, ifthere is an emergency, police or the fire brigadehave access. Get them tocheck the windows anddoors and keep an eye outfor strangers going on toyour property.

The police want thepublic to contact themimmediately if they seepeople they feel are actingsuspiciously.

In the case of a naturaldisaster, help could takeup to three days to beavailable — so neighboursneed to help each other.

Mrs Foreman saysbecoming part of a

neighbourhood supportstreet group is like takinga step back in time towhen everyone knew theirneighbours and helpedwhen needed.■ For more informationabout neighbourhoodsupport or getting in touchwith members of your streetgroup, contact WendyForeman phone 366-0574.

Security ensureshappy ChristmasBy PETER FRANKLIN

With Christmas oneveryone’s minds, policeare urging people not tobecome victims ofopportunist thieves.

Police say people need toremember the basics to stopthemselves being targeted— a simple thing likemaking sure the front dooris locked when working orin the backyard.

On Monday a womanhad her purse stolen whileshe was in the garden; the

thief walked in, saw herpurse and stole it — she didnot hear a thing.

With Christmas treesbeing put up and presentsplaced around the bottom,an open door is aninvitation for someone to dosome shopping of their ownat your expense.

Community ConstableGraeme Jarvis says anotherarea of concern is thenumber of people who leavevaluables in plain view intheir cars. He said if youhave been Christmas

shopping put the items outof sight in the boot or coverthem so they can’t be seenby anyone passing by.

The most importantthing is to make sure the caris securely locked.

If you see a person actingsuspiciously in a car park, looking in or trying thedoors, do not hesitate, callthe police.

Christmas is a time to beenjoyed. If we all do ourpart, and think safety andsecurity, everyone will havea good time.

Fire chief urges care this summerKeeping safe this summermeans being fire wise.

Levin volunteer chieffire officer Lindsay Walkersaid there are a few simplethings to do.■ Summer meansbarbecues — make sure theconnections are checkedand the gas bottle is certi-fied. When in use, ensurethat there is a bucket ofwater close by just in casesomeone gets burnt, either

by a splash of hot oil orinadvertently touching thehot plate.■ Make sure that long grassaround the house, garageand fences is trimmed. Thiswill greatly reduce the riskof a spark or dropped cigar-ette catching fire.■ Another concern is theamount of Christmas treelights plugged into the onepower board. Use commer-cial powerboards rather

than domestic ones. Theyare designed to take biggerloads and are fitted withbreaker switches.■ Be aware and check withHorowhenua District Coun-cil on fire restrictions.

Mr Walker said a lot oflocals will head to thebeaches for picnics over thesummer and they mustremember that there is apermanent fire ban on allHorowhenua beaches.

Hyundai boostsrange for 2014By JOHNMASLIN

Hyundai’s has been in spring-cleaning mode, amping up power and certainly specificationacross a number of vehicles in its stable.

It has started with the Accent and hasswept up the Elantra and i40 wagon, whichhave undergone several changes ready for the2014 year.

The Accent Elite gets the more powerful1.6-litre GDI engine which lifts output to103kW, an extra 13kW on the existing 1.3-litreengine powering the Accent range.

That GDI — for gasoline direct injection —petrol engine links to a six-speed automaticwhich also offers sequential shifting. Hyundaisays the new unit has a combined fuel usefigure of 6.6 litres per 100km.

The other noticeable engineeringdifference comes in the attention paid to thecar’s suspension.

The Accent copies the suspension seen onthe Velostar and soon to be coming i30 GDI,with much of the tuning done by Hyundaiengineers in Australia and testing in realworld conditions.

They have changed to rear dampers to helpimprove handling by opting for high-performance Mando units.
