ExpensesA recent news release highlighted amove to increase MPs expenses, particularly in relation to livingaccommodation in Wellington.

The Remuneration Authoritysets MPs salaries and expenses onan annual basis with their pro-posals being made available to allMPs before a final determination ismade by the Authority.

The current proposals, whichcould come into effect in mid to lateAugust, include an increase in theMinisterial housing allowance by$3500, taking the total figure to$41000 while ordinary MPs housingallowance's will increase by $4000 to$28000 per year.

If members of Parliament decideto stay in a hotel while in Welling-ton they can claim up to $190 pernight, up from $160 per night, with aceiling allowance of $28,000 peryear. Ministers can claim up to $240

per night in Wellington Hotelaccommodation while MPs stayingin Auckland on Parliamentary busi-ness can claim $210 per night.

The Remuneration Authorityhas also reviewed travel allowancesfor MPs spouses, partners and chil-dren with a specified number oftrips by air, train, taxi or ferrywhile accompanying the MP onParliamentary business. Twentydomestic one way trips for MPs’families and 30 trips for Ministers’families have been suggested by theAuthority as well as a similarnumber for party leaders with 25 ormore MPs in Parliament.

Once the Remuneration Author-ity's proposals are approved theincreased costs associated with thedemocratic process will once againbe a charge on the New Zealandtaxpayer — that’s the price of livingin a democracy!

BLUE BEAT

Robberies investigatedwith GRAEME JARVISCommunity Constable

The past week has seen twoserious aggravated robberies inthe town.

While these are seriousoffences, particularly happeningso close together, Levin anddistricts generally do not seemuch of this type of offending, and the likelihood of being atarget of this type of offence isvery low.

The week began with therobbery outside Te Takere lastTuesday evening, where theoccupants of a car had theirbelongings and car taken, and onThursday evening, at about8.10pm a male wearing abalaclava entered the Tiro TiroRoad dairy brandishing a knife, and demanded money.

This offender made his escapethrough properties on Tiro TiroRoad, and is believed to have hada vehicle waiting on ElizabethStreet.

The offender is described aspossibly Maori, aged between20-30 years, and was wearing agrey/green coloured jacket, lightblue jeans and carried a blackbag.

Police would like to hear fromthe person who gave chase to theoffender, or from anyone else inthe Tiro Tiro Road-ElizabethStreet area who may have seenor heard the offender crossingtheir properties, or may haveseen a vehicle in the area actingsuspiciously.

Information can be passed toDetective Morse at Levin Policeon (06) 366-0564, or alternativelyon Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,

which iscompletelyanony-mous.

Crimeoverallcontinuesto trenddownward,despite afewburglariesin thedistrict

over recent weeks. The LevinGolf Club was entered lastTuesday night and on the samenight Kathmandu in Otaki wasthe subject of a break-in, andabout 50 puffer style jackets weretaken.

Dropping crime trends is nocoincidence, but is achieved asthe result of detailedinvestigations, proactiveenquiries and road policingmade by very dedicated policestaff across all the work groupsin the district.

Just a reminder also thatwinter driving conditions arevery much upon us, varyingfrom cold frosty morningsfollowed by bright sunny days, towet and windy days. Pleaseremember to fully clear frostfrom windscreens and sidewindows before driving in themorning, and over the next fewmonths, be aware of low sun inthe mornings and evenings, thatcan cause sun strike.

In wet, windy conditions, often associated with low light, remember to drive to theconditions, reduce speed andfollowing distances and takeparticular care at intersections.

Volunteer firefightersan asset to communityBy PETER FRANKLIN

Levin Volunteer Fire BrigadeChief Officer Lindsay Walkerbelieves volunteer firefightersplay an important role both for thecommunity and in business.

“We are fortunate to have a lotof great business owners whounderstand the need to havepeople who are capable of takingon the responsibility of savinglives and property. When the sirensounds they allow them to droptools and leave work,” Mr Walkersaid.

“But they also appreciate theskills those volunteers bring totheir businesses.”

Our volunteers go through awide range of training that can beutilised in the business

community.“For instance, while having a

person in the work force with afirst aid certificate is great, avolunteer firefighter has thatextra first aid training to bringthem up to the requirements of thefire service,” he said.

Because firefighters aretrained to look for, and make safe, hazards, this skill can beinvaluable in a wide range of workplaces — ensuring staff safety atwork is a major priority foremployers. Mr Walker said thiswas another good reason toemploy or encourage a staffmember to join the volunteerbrigade.

The brigade are always lookingfor committed people in a range ofoperational and non-operational

positions. “While there is a needto have frontline firefighters, there are always opportunities formen and women to take up a nonfrontline support role within thebrigade. Every position within thebrigade is important and can givethe person a great sense ofsatisfaction,” he said.

Mr Walker is happy to talk toanyone considering joining thebrigade and explain all the skill-based benefits that come with thejob.

■ Those interested are invited tocome down to the Levin Fire Stationon a Tuesday at 7pmor leave amessage ring 368-5800, and talk tosomeone about how they could be abigger asset to your family, yourcommunity and your employer.

THIS Friday’s guests at the folk club, The Jimmies, will probably play the most variedset you’ll hear all year.

The Jimmies bringeclectic mix of musicWellington’s The Jimmies began as abarn-dance and ceilidh band back in 1986and were a core part of the capital’s Celticmusic scene with their distinctive brandof Irish and Scottish music.

But changes in the band’s lineupduring its 28 years has meant a number ofmusical styles have influenced theirsound.

As a result, their playlist showcases awide and varied repertoire. The audienceis likely to get a taste of rock’n’rollstandards from the 60s and 70s as well asCountry music, Kiwi songs both old andnew, and a few original numbers.

And while there’ll still be a good ‘beltof the Celt’ with some rollicking tunes, you can expect to hear anything from aTango to Irving Berlin.

Storytime crucial for young brains

BIG HELP: A recent study has proven reading to toddlers every day improves their language and socialskills. Levin mum Pamela Love agrees, enjoying the time spent with son Sebastian, 3, reading together.

By TANYAWOODREADING SERVICESChildren’s’ Reading services andprogrammes offered at Te Takere:■ Books for Babies: a librarywelcome pack is provided tomothers of newborn babies, whichincludes a reading list of bookssuitable for newbabies andtoddlers and a story board book tobe read to baby.■ Toddler Time: held once aweekat each of the HorowhenuaLibraries, these are interactivesessions that involve a social halfhour of stories, rhymes, music andmovement.■ Early Childhood Outreach Visits:between 20 – 30 outreach visits aremade to early childhood centresthroughout the Horowhenua by thechildren’s librarian, similar toToddler Time sessionswith actionsongs, rhymes and carefullyselected books read to the children.■ Holiday Reading Programmes:two reading incentive basedreading programmes held eachyear, designed for children frompreschool to teens, to encourageand stimulate children to enjoyreading, and parents to becomeinvolvedwith their children’sreading at home.

Reading to toddlers every dayhelps improve their languageand social skills, according tofindings from a recent study.

However, New Zealand’sleading national reading charity, the New Zealand Book Council,is concerned by the statistics thatalso reveal approximately one-third of toddlers are still not readto daily.

“A growing body of research[in New Zealand and the UK]shows it’s extraordinarily goodfor a toddler to have books readto them daily,” said New ZealandBook Council chief executiveCatriona Ferguson.

“Early and regular exposureto books supports languagedevelopment, lowers stresslevels and creates an intimatebonding opportunity. Readingand a love of books have beenshown to improve children’soutcomes, both socially andeconomically.”

A study by the University ofAuckland, tracking 7000 NewZealanders since birth, Now WeAre Two: Describing our first1000 days, found 80 per cent ofNew Zealand two year olds hadwatched TV or DVDs on a givenday, but only 66 per cent had oneor more books read to them on aregular daily basis.

“For everyone’s sake thatfigure should be much nearer to100 per cent,” Ms Ferguson said.

Levin mum Pamela Love hasread to son Sebastian, 3, since hewas a baby. “Every day and atbedtime we read a story togetherand I have noticed Sebastian’svocabulary and comprehensionis really good for his age as aresult.”

As well as being entertaining,Pamela said many of the storieshave actions and consequencesso her son is learning life lessonsand empathy with characters.

“When he was younger and hewould see a sad face on the page

he would cry, it was amazing tosee.”

She said everyone should readto his or her children. “Pick apile of books from the library andread one a day, it doesn’t have totake long. I love it, it’s our quiet

time together.”Te Takere Children and Teen

librarian Deborah Macdonaldsaid the children’s libraryprovides a wide selection ofbooks to suit all ages.

“Reading aloud to children

encourages them to read on theirown and to become betterreaders.

“It helps them buildvocabulary and language skillsand gain knowledge of the worldaround them.”

She said children learnquickly that reading isimportant and fun.

“It helps developcommunication, creativity andself-esteem. We believepassionately that reading is thebest way to give all children thebest start to their education.”

Following on from last month, now is a good time to elaborate on arthritis. The cold, damp conditions that come with winter can often lead to aworsening in the pain and discomfort felt by our elderly pets.

One in every five dogs may be affected by arthritis at some stage in theirlife. Does your dog have any of the following signs?

• Stiffness or difficulty getting up after rest

• Difficulty with movements such as climbing stairs or getting into the car

• Limping on one or more legs, which may ease after your dog has‘warmed up’

• Tiredness – sleeping more or slowing down on walks

• Changes in behaviour – irritable, ‘snappy’ or depressed and withdrawn

• Weight gain

• Licking, chewing or biting at painful areas, which may cause hairloss andskin irritation over joints

Cats with arthritis often stop jumping up onto chairs or benches, and canbecome ‘grumpy’ when sore. Some cats will often eat less when in pain, resulting in weight loss.

If you have recognised any of these symptoms in your dog or cat, then it istime for your pet to have a check-up with your vet.

Osteoarthritis (Degenerative Joint Disease, or DJD) in dogs and cats isalmost always a progressive and irreversible condition; if left untreated, astime passes your pet’s pain will worsen. Fortunately, there are many waysthat we can manage this condition and help most pets to maintain a goodquality of life. After an examination, your vet will recommend a treatmentplan that will best help your pet.

Options include:-

• Prescription diets

• Chondroprotectants (supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitinthat promote cartilage repair)

• Anti-inflammatory medications

• Pentosan injections that improve joint health

• Weight loss, as excess weight causes an increase in the ‘wear-and-tear’on joints

If in doubt, check it out! Our friendly team at Levin and Horowhenua Vetsare here to help – give us a call.

Summerset Animal Rescue FundraiserSummerset by the Ranges once again came forward to help animalsby raising funds. ‘The residents at the care-centre of Summerset arepassionate about animals and for their wellbeing’, said DiversionalTherapist Val Franklin. ‘It is the residents who pick a charity andit is always the animals.’ Raising money for a good cause is a yearlyevent that residents get behind, through hard work, knitting dog coatswith random pieces of yarn, inviting family and friends to high tea andthe good old raffle, which raised the princely sum of $250.

Cindy Puketapu from Animal Rescue in Levin thanked everyone involved.‘The money will certainly come in handy’, said Mrs Puketapu.

Mrs Puketapu has worked for animals for decades, giving comfort anda kind human touch. It is a sad fact that animals get neglected but with a lotof TLC most animals can get re-housed with loving families.

Students out and about to learn about Levin

FIELD WORK: Year 5 Koputaroa students swapped their classroom for a week at Te Takere to find outmore about Levin’s business community. Putting their presentation together are, from left, JessicaLeota, Alec Strydam, Emma Zussino, Nate Salton, Caitlin Burbery and Seth Robinson. PHOTO: TANYA WOOD

RESULTSTop findings from the week-long study by Koputaroastudents:- Many people believe Levinneeds more shoe shops—there are no children’s shoeshops apart from TheWarehouse.- 34 per cent of the shopsalong the CBD are foodoutlets— not includingcafes, which make up anadditional 8 per cent.- The most popularsupermarket from peoplesurveyed was Countdown.- Many people wish Levinhad a greater variety ofreasonably priced clothingstores.- Business owners enjoyedthe community aspect ofworking in a small town.- Business owners agreedthat it was harder when newstores opened up, creatingcompetition in a smallcustomer base.- Some Levin businesseswere increasing theircustomer base by sellingtheir products online.- Business owners thought itwas possible to make areasonable living in a smalltown such as Levin.- The Horowhenua DistrictCouncil EconomicDevelopment officer istrying to get businesses inthe area to work closertogether.

By TANYAWOOD

It seems Levin doesn’t haveenough clothes and shoe shopsbut we’ve got plenty oftakeaways.

These were just some of thefindings by Year 5 students fromKoputaroa School who swappedthe classroom for Te Takere lastweek, to undertake a weeklonginvestigation into Levin’sbusiness community.

It is part of a larger project tolearn more about Levin and thediversity within the community.

Teacher Jacqui Coogan saidthe students spent the weekinterviewing locally-owned andnational franchise businessowners, members of the publicand council to find out if Levinhad the right type of businesses, what were the advantages anddisadvantages of running abusiness in the town, what wasbeing done to support smallerbusinesses and where peoplepreferred to shop.

“It’s providing an authenticcontext for their learning sohopefully they are moremotivated, talking to real peoplein the real world. The studentshave had to incorporatestatistics, graphs, language andinterviewing skills, technologyand research skills as part of theweek-long survey.”

Emma Zussino, 9, said hergroup arranged to interview staffat SportsWorld, as well asstopping members of the publicon the street, to ask how theythought Levin could be changed, and what they thought was goodabout the town.

“They said Levin neededmore clothes and shoe shops. Ithink Levin has a lot of shops so I

was surprised to learn that quitea few people go shopping in otherplaces because they don’t thinkwe have enough variety.”

Emma said it was “kindascary” stopping people theydidn’t know to ask questions.

“Everyone was nice thoughand we were able to record theiranswers.”

She said working in TeTakere for the week was great.

“There’s plenty of room to walkaround and find places to sit. Itmade learning a lot more funthan it usually is.”

Ms Coogan said the studentsfound businesses and councilvery supportive of the projectand of the idea working out of TeTakere. It was the first time theschool, and any other school, hasspent a full week at Te Takere.“It’s just such a fantastic

resource with the researchfacility, recording studios, computers and being in thecentre of town,” said Ms Coogan.

Each group presented theirfindings to the rest of the class andparents at Te Takere on the lastday. The class would be goingback to Te Takere one day a weeknext term for students to follow upon individual interests from thesurvey.

Composts better than potting mixes

WORMS do great work in the garden, and with compost.

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

Part 2For those that are interested in

this method here is how I do it.Firstly choose the largest plasticrubbish tin you can find (about 76litres). Avoid black plastic ones,as they can cook the roots if instrong direct sunlight.

Drill about 40-50mm wideholes in the sides of the bin about100mm up from the bottom fordrainage. This leaves an area atthe base, for surplus water in thesummer.

You can partially dig into thesoil and if you want the roots toenter into the soil, place aboutfour holes 40-50mm wide in thebottom as well as four at thecardinal points on the sides (Ifyou move you can easily wrenchthe tree and container from theground).

I have used this part-buriedmethod in the past, for my citrustrees and passion fruit vines toavoid root rots in winter.

Now for a growing medium tofill the containers, don't wasteyour money on potting mixes asthey lack the long-term goodnessthat a tree needs.

Instead use a manure-basedcompost. There are organicmulches and composts availablefrom most garden centres, thatare made of bark fines, compostedwith animal manures. Add to thisa few handfuls of clean top soil, mixed or layered through. I also

add in worm-casts and wormsfrom my worm farm. The wormshelp keep the heavier compostsopen and also supply acontinuous source of nutrients.

You add in sheep manure pelletsand Rok Solid.

Plant up your tree so that thesoil level is about 100mm belowthe rim of the container. This

allows for easy watering andfeeding. I mulch the top of the mixin spring with old chook manureand apply Fruit and FlowerPower (magnesium and

potassium) once a month duringthe fruiting period.

Other foods can be applied asneeded. If the roots are notallowed into the surrounding soil, you will need to lift the tree out ofthe container every 2-3 years androot prune by cutting off thebottom one third of the roots witha saw. New compost and a bit ofsoil is placed in this area vacatedand the tree put back in thecontainer. This is best done inwinter when the tree is dormant.

Another interesting thing totry is making a grape vine into acolumn or weeping vine.

I saw these a few years back, where grape vines had beengrown in containers and prunedso that they were just an upwardsgrowing pole-like plant (when cutback in winter). These grapesstood about 2m out of thecontainers and had trunks up to100mm in diameter. The newlaterals would appear off thetrunk in the spring and with theweight of the grapes made a nicelooking weeper covered ingrapes.

To achieve this, simply obtaina grape vine that has a reasonablytallish trunk and leader.

Secure these to a suitablestake and remove all otherlaterals while its dormant.

The following winter pruneside laterals to two or three budsand repeat every winter.

As mentioned before, gardencentres now have their range offruit trees in. If you can’t find aparticular specimen there have alook for nurseries on the internet.■ For gardening problems ringmeat 0800 466-464 (Palmerston North357-0606), [email protected]

PROUD HISTORYHorowhenua Obedience Dog Training Club has over half a centuryof history behind it. On July 20, 1960 Cliff and Betty Wilsonhosted ameeting in their Levin homewith Don Ransom, KathleenKnox (now Ransom) andMr R Burns to discuss the formation of adog obedience training club.A meeting held a month later sawMr Ransom elected presidentwith Miss Knox secretary/treasurer. Being among the firstobedience clubs in New Zealand, a set of rules had to be obtainedfrom the Auckland All Breeds Dog Training Club which was thefirst in the country, formed in 1955.MrWilson arranged for the new Horowhenua club to lease landbeside Lake Horowhenua, which is where it still meets everyweek. The Club has a role of honour the envy of any club inobedience, agility andmore recently canine good citizens. Lifemember Rosemary Cleator brought fame to the club winning thetelevised TuxWonder Dog series some years ago.The club has always been community focused with weeklyclasses open to anybody and attracts a variety of dogs andhandlers, who are made welcome whether competitive or purelypet focused.

All dog lovers are invited tocome and watch some of NewZealand’s top obedience dogs inaction at Mauapoko Park, alongside Lake Horowhenuatomorrow and Sunday.

Dogs from throughout thecountry will take part in theHorowhenua Obedience DogTraining Club Championshipshow starting at 9am.

Obedience classes wrap upfor the day around 1pm, but theshow doesn’t finish there.

As soon as the obedience isfinished for the day, CanineGood Citizen (CGC) assessorswill be putting CGC candidatesthrough their paces.

The CGC dogs have been seenaround the Levin business

district on Wednesday eveningswith distinctive blue jackets inpreparation for their exams.

They are required to pass aserious of tests in order to gaindistinction from Foundationthrough to Gold.

All Judges, stewards andhelpers have donated theirtime, expertise and covered alltheir own expenses as this showis a fund raiser for a NationalDog Obedience Assembly beingheld over Labour Weekend atManfeild.

While many clubs andorganisations struggle forsurvival, not so the HODTC.

Membership stands at morethan 100 and continues to grow.

This weekend’s show is opento public, there is no admissioncharge.

MEMBERS of the Levin Gymnastics Club are ready to show thecountry what they can do.

Gymnastics club tohost regional eventBy PETER FRANKLIN

There is a real buzz ofexcitemnet at the LevinGymnastics Club as theyprepare to host a regionalcompetition next month.

Club spokeswoman LouiseMcCarthy said they wereexpecting up to 250 competitorsplus their families to be in Levinfor the competition on SaturdayAugust 2.

“What a great chance toshowcase the facilities we have, and what the district as a wholehas to offer,” Mrs McCarthy said.

The club has been operatingsince 1954 and continues to getstronger each year. She saidorganising a competition of thissize was a financial strain on theclub, so they were looking for

sponsors to help.Mrs McCarthy said this was

an investment not in thecompetition but in young localathletes, giving Horowhenuagymnasts the chance to shine infront of a home crowd.

The club is looking fordonated prizes for raffles and alittle something for the out-of-town judges or funds to puttowards the event.

Mrs McCarthy said this was abig event for the club and, doneright, could lead to hostingbigger events, bringing morepeople to the district and gettingthe exposure for local gynnaststhat they richly deserve.■ For more information about theclub or how you can help contactLouiseMcCarthy by [email protected]

Follow the ABC of winter driving

ICY: The Desert Road in winter.

Now that winter has properlyarrived, road safety charityBrake is reminding drivers tofollow the ABC of winterdriving to prevent devastatingcrashes.

That means avoiding settingoff in dangerous conditions, being prepared by listening toforecasts and having anemergency kit, and carefuldriving, by keeping a safedistance and slowing rightdown if caught in badconditions.

Brake director CarolinePerry says every year lives aretorn apart by crashes.

“We’re calling on drivers todo everything possible to avoidtragedies when winter weatherhits. Heavy rain, high winds, fog, snow and icy conditions allmake driving incredibly risky;stopping distances at leastdouble in the wet and canincrease ten-fold in ice andsnow, and if you can’t see clearly

you can’t react to hazards. Weare also urging drivers to beprepared, make sure yourvehicle is properly maintainedand you have an emergency kit.If you get caught out by theweather the most critical thingis to slow right down and keepyour distance so you have timeto stop in an emergency.”

Brake’s ABC advice:■ Avoid driving in treacherousconditions. Avoid driving in badconditions like fog, heavy rain,ice and snow. Consideralternative modes of transport ifavailable, delay your journey oravoiding going out altogether ifpossible.■ Be prepared. Make sure yourvehicle is well maintained, andtyres have a tread depth of atleast 3mm. Check forecasts andplan your route to avoid roadslikely to be more risky, andallow plenty of time. Carry anemergency kit with an icescraper or de-icer; torch; cloths;

a blanket and warm clothes; foodand drink; first-aid kit; spade;warning triangle and high-visibility vest. Always take afully charged phone in case ofemergencies, but don’t betempted to use it when driving.■ Careful and cautious driving. If you do get caught out drivingin treacherous conditions, youneed to slow right down toincrease the distance betweenyou and the vehicle in front. Inrain, your stopping distance is atleast double what it is in the dry,so keep a four second gap. Insnow or icy conditions stoppingdistances increase by as much as10 times so you need to dropright back. Keep a careful lookout for people on foot and bikeswho may be harder to spot.Avoid harsh braking andacceleration and carry outmanoeuvres slowly and withextra care.To support Brake, go towww.brake.org.nz.

Wolves tamed in finalsbut happy with seasonBy PETER FRANKLIN

A big challenge faced theLevin Wolves rugbyleague under-15s andunder-17s, after workinghard through the season tomake the finals.

They faced thepowerhouse of Manawaturugby league, Kai Ora inthe finals held inPalmerston North.

Wolves under-15smanager Jim Gunningsaid, as far as he wasconcerned, the under-15sdid not play to their fullpotential in their 49-4 loss, while the 17s did betterbut found it hard tocontrol a Kai Ora side thatwere pumped up andhungry to take the title.

Kai Ora won 40-26.Mr Gunning said Kai

Ora were a wellestablished club and had

some very talented bigplayers in all their grades.

He did not want to takeanything away from theWolves teams.

They started late in theseason, had their ups anddowns but overall did wellto fight their way to thefinals playoffs.

Mr Gunning said, whilethey did not come homewith cups, their overallperformance during theseason had beenencouraging.

“We know where wehave to strengthen ourgame, and that is apositive,” he said.

Mr Gunning said theclub was growing and theywere confident that theywould be able to front upwith four teams nextseason, under 13s, 15s, 17sand seniors.

One of the

disappointments for MrGunning this season wasthe lack of totalcommitment to the gameby some key players.

“I know these guys areyoung and want to havefun with friends but thegame can, for those whowant to take it to the limit, give them aninternational career. Butthat will only come withthe hard work they put innow as junior players,” hesaid.

He said all-in-all it hadbeen a successful seasonand having two sides inthe finals was a goodachievement.

“We can have a breakand start planning nextyear’s assault on the finalsand, with a bit of luck, play more home games, something the players andsupporters want badly.”

The besttest is thetest of time

BG Buck Ltd, your well-known elec-trical contractors, have expanded tooffer a further service into the field ofcommercial refrigeration.

Manager Barrie Buck says overtheir 50-plus years in business thishad always been an area of interestbut they had previously been toobusy within the electrical side of thebusiness to fully commit into otherareas.

Being involved with the supply, installation and servicing of a numberof manufacturers’ of heat pumps andwith the extra staff who have theexpertise in commercial refrigera-tion, it now makes good businesssense to run these together.

Barrie points out that their extraadvantages are of having a fullyequipped workshop, the ability tomanufacture their own control equip-ment to each c l ien t ’s ownrequirements and to fully install.

So BG Buck Ltd is really a one-stop shop from advice, manufactureto installation.

Barrie also points out the com-pany’s policy on training and keepingahead of this ever-changing industryof products and technology togetherwith their staff’s dedication andenthusiasm to our clients needs andoffer a full back up and breakdownservice 24/7.

“If it’s electrical contact the bestthat time has proved.”

Slick Shannon keep Old Boys at bay

LCOB second-five Vili Tia holds on to the ball but loses a boot, clutched by Shannon halfback Anthony Porima. LCOB half backRopata Matehaere, far left, and Shannon flanker Todd Shields, farright.

The maroon and white armyonce again proved too strong asShannon took the upperhandand never let up in the Premierrugby game on home turfagainst Levin College Old Boys.

Denied a try early on in thefirst half by solid Old Boysdefence, it wasn’t long beforeShannon had seven points onthe board with a try andconversion, followed inrelatively quick succession bytwo more tries, one conversionand a penalty to lead 22-0.

LCOB hit back with a try oftheir own, deep in the corner, bycentre Sani Ulu-Kini before thehalftime whistle.

The second half of the gamewas almost a repeatperformance of the first.

Shannon scored the first try, converted, followed by a tryfrom LCOB centre Ulu-Kini andconverted by first-five Lafi Salu, but then the Shannon machinestepped up a gear to notch upanother two tries and aconversion.

At 41-12, it looked like gameover but to LCOB’s credit theyfought to the end and posted alast-minute try, by loose forwardGideon Masoe — converted bySalu, before the final whistle, bringing the score to 41-19.

Shannon coach TonyRobinson said the game was agood test.

“It was a good game againstgood opposition. At times theyheld on to the ball and weredangerous but I suppose maybewe wore them down and exposedthem in a few places,” he said.

Shannon, currently leadingthe table, have done enough tosecure their place in thesemifinals at home butRobinson is aware thatParaparaumu is only two pointsbehind.

“If we win this Saturday,we’ll finish on top and play thefourth placed team, which iscurrently Levin Athletic. We’repretty focused and we’ve got agood bunch of guys who’veworked hard this season andtrained well all year. Weobviously want to continue theway we’ve been going butanything can happen in semis.”

LCOB manager Dean Thomassaid his team needed to win thegame against Shannon to securea semifinal place.

“We did quite well keepingthem from scoring during thefirst 20 minutes but those spell oftries in 10 minutes reallyknocked us back. But credit tothe guys, they came back andplayed with a lot of heart withtheir backs up against the wall.In the end it didn’t really matterbecause Athletic won and put usout of the semifinals.”

LCOB will play Paraparaumuon Saturday in their final game.

“We’ll go out and try andsalvage a little bit of pride andhopefully soften Paraparaumu

up and increase Shannon’schance of bringing home thetrophy,” Thomas said.

Revamp for Toyota series

THE Toyota Racing Series has confirmed a five-weekend 2015 series running throughJanuary and February.

For the upcoming 2015 season the ToyotaRacing Series will feature an all-newsingle-seater racing car and a new mix ofcircuits.

The calendar comprises two SouthIsland rounds and three in the NorthIsland with a return to the Ruapunacircuit near Christchurch and also to theTaupo Motorsport Park.

The five-week championship starts atRuapuna on January 17-18 and will finishwith the New Zealand Grand Prix atManfeild near Feilding. It will also visitInvercargill’s Teretonga Park and theHampton Downs track in the northWaikato.

The Toyota Racing Series pits thefastest rising stars of New Zealandmotorsport against top international

drivers in a 15 race Gold Starchampionship that offers drivers thechance to win some of the mostprestigious trophies in New Zealandmotor racing.

Category manager Barrie Thomlinsonsays Canterbury sports fans can lookforward to spectacular racing with thereturn of the series to Mike PeroMotorsport Park at Ruapuna on January17-18.

The Toyota Racing Series last includedthe challenging circuit during the2008-2009 season.

‘‘Toyota Racing Series is a uniquechance for rising Kiwi drivers to getvaluable ‘wings and slicks’ experience ina real team environment before startingtheir international careers,’’ says

Thomlinson.‘‘Ruapuna is a firm favourite with

drivers and teams, so we’re rapt to beable to race there again.’’

Thomlinson said the championship’sreturn to Taupo after a year’s absencewill also be popular with local andinternational drivers because the highspeed straights, fast turns andtechnically challenging infield cornersof the Taupo track have a strongEuropean character to them.

This track hosted the New Zealandround of the A1GP championship inrecent years and TRS last raced there in2013. Taupo will be the penultimateround of the championship.

Many young drivers who have risenthrough the ranks of TRS in recentyears are making their mark at thehighest level in international motorracing.

New Zealand and international racedrivers now competing in Europe andAsia include Brendon Hartley (FIAWorld Endurance Championship),Richie Stanaway (currently third inGP3), Mitch Evans (double TRSchampion, youngest ever Grand Prixwinner when he won the New Zealand

GP in 2011, 2012 GP3 champion and nowracing GP2) and Russian driver DaniilKvyat, now racing in Formula One withRed Bull.

This year, drivers will be racing in anew ‘wings and slicks’ single-seater car asthe championship steps up from itsexisting FT40 cars to a new FT50 chassis.

The Toyota Finance 86 Championshipwill also feature on the programmealongside TRS at the Ruapuna andInvercargill rounds and at the New

Zealand Grand Prix.2015 Toyota Racing Series calendar:January 14–18—Mike PeroMotorsport Park,Ruapuna, Christchurch,WigramCup22–25 January—Teretonga Park, Spirit of aNation CupJan 29–Feb 1—Hampton Downs, NewZealandMotor CupFebruary 5–8—TaupoMotorsport Park,Denny HulmeMemorial TrophyFebruary 12–15—Manfeild, New ZealandGrand Prix
