NASA telescope finds elusivebuckyballs in space for first time

WASHINGTON, 24 July — Astronomers using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescopehave discovered carbon molecules, known as “buckyballs,” in space for the first time,NASA said Friday.

Buckyballs are soccer-ball-shaped molecules that were first observed in alaboratory 25 years ago. They are named for their resemblance to architectBuckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, which have interlocking circles on thesurface of a partial sphere. Buckyballs were thought to float around in space, buthad escaped detection until now. “We found what are now the largest moleculesknown to exist in space,” said astronomer Jan Cami of the University of WesternOntario, Canada, and the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. “ We areparticularly excited because they have unique properties that make them importantplayers for all sorts of physical and chemical processes going on in space.” Camiauthored a paper about the discovery that appeared Friday in the journal Science.

Zambia warns againstadvertising breast milk

substitutesLUSAKA, 24 July — The Zambian government

has warned manufacturers and traders againstadvertising breast feeding substitutes, saying thiswas against the law, the Times of Zambia reported onFriday.

The Ministry of Health has since warned that itwill deploy a team of officers to inspect shops andother selling points where breast feeding substituteswere being marketed and advertised because this wasagainst the law, according to Times. Ministry ofHealth Spokesperson, Dr Reuben Mbewe said duringa press briefing on Thursday that there was need forthe manufacturers to stop marketing of breast-feedingsubstitutes because it discouraged mothers frombreast-feeding which was the recommended sourceof nutrition for infants.

He said the government in 2006 bannedmanufacturers, traders and other dealers fromadvertising breast milk substitutes, adding that themarketing of break milk substitutes should notinterfere with breast-feeding by portraying a wrongpicture that healthy children were those who fed onbreast milk substitutes.

“In May 2006, Zambia through the Ministry ofHealth promulgated regulations to monitor thenegative practices in the marketing, sale anddistribution of breast milk substitutes. Theseregulations aim to support, promote and protect breast-feeding by regulating the practices in the marketingof infant and young child feeding products,” DrMbewe was quoted as saying by the paper.

Agricultural development is given first priority forfood sufficiency as well as emphasis is being placedon industrial development which plays an importantrole in transforming the nation into a modern anddeveloped one.

Human resources are required for buildingmodern, developed and industrialized nation. A na-tion would not be an industrialized one without hav-ing human resources—technocrats and labours.

Industrial development, major stridetowards modern, developed nation

Article: Maung Tway Htet, Photos: Kyemon

Establishment of industries on a large scale isa main driver behind the development of the industri-alized countries. It is widely said that today is Informa-tion and Communication Technology Age. Needlessto say we cannot reach ICT Age without industrialrevolution. Only with industrial development have wepassed better ages one after another.

Although Myanmar is rich in land and waterresources, she could not exploit and utilize them effec-tively due to lack of technology. During the rule ofcolonialists, Myanmar lagged far behind other globalpartners in terms of technology.

During the post-independence days, the coun-try lagged behind in industrial sector compared with

other countries due to lack of peace and stability andgood policies. The country encountered unemploy-ment and relied on neighbouring countries for house-hold goods due to lack of industrial development.

After 1988, the government promoted indus-trial sector while implementing 12 objectives.
