Australian govt maycut migration intake

CANBERRA, 27 Oct — The Australian ImmigrationMinister Chris Evans said on Sunday the governmentwould consider calls for a reduction in immigration tocope with slowing economic growth when it receivedthe mid-year economic data.

He said Australia already was seeing increasedinterest in migration to Australia from countries likeBritain which were experiencing economic downturn.

Evans said the government would also consult withindustry before deciding whether or not to alter thisyear’s migration programme.

“The programme was designed in the light of theforecasts for this year - strong economic growth, highinflation and a real skills crisis,” he told the NineNetwork.

“If those parametres are changing, the governmentwill take a sober look at those issues and make adecision when we have got proper information,” hesaid.

Evans said it was easy to call for a migrationreduction but it was important to consider migrantsactually had a positive impact on the economy.

“What we know is most migrants have better joboutcomes than Australians locally. We know that theyconsume, they buy property and they’re a net positiveto the budget,” he said.

Oil falls to $63 as investors eyefalling demand

SINGAPORE, 27 Oct—Oil prices fell to 17-month lowsat $63 a barrel Monday in Asia as investors weighedFriday’s OPEC output cut against growing evidenceof a severe global economic slowdown that would un-dermine crude demand.

Light, sweet crude for December delivery fell 32cents to $63.83 a barrel in electronic trading on theNew York Mercantile Exchange by midday in Singa-pore.

Investors brushed off a 1.5 million barrel-a-day cutannounced by the Organization of Petroleum Export-ing Countries on Friday, focusing instead on fallingcrude demand as economies across the globe reel fromthe impact of a credit crisis.

On Friday, oil fell $3.69 to settle at $64.15. Priceshave plunged 57 percent from a record $147.27 on 11July.

Oil investors have also been eyeing stock marketsto gauge sentiment on global economic health. MostAsian stock indexes fell Monday, led by Hong Kong,South Korea and Australia. Japanese shares reboundedslightly after plummeting last week.—Internet

Study finds AIDS treatmentshould start sooner

WASHINGTON, 27 Oct—People who have the AIDSvirus should start drug treatments sooner than currentguidelines recommend, suggests a large new studythat could change the care of hundreds of thousandsof Americans.

The study found that delaying treatment until a pa-tient’s immune system is badly damaged nearly dou-bles the risk of dying in the next few years comparedto patients whose treatment started earlier.

Doctors have thought it would be better to sparepatients the side effects of AIDS drugs as long as pos-sible.

The study was reported Sunday at an infectious dis-eases conference in Washington.

Powerful drug combinations available since themid-1990s have transformed HIV infection into amanageable chronic condition rather than the deathsentence it once was. But they can cause heart andcholesterol problems, diarrhea, nausea and other sideeffects. They also must be taken faithfully or resist-ance develops and the drugs stop working.

Study shows humans made fire790,000 years ago

Can smoke and mirrors ease globalwarming?

JERUSALEM, 27 Oct —A new study shows thathumans had the ability tomake fire nearly 790,000years ago, a skill thathelped them migrate fromAfrica to Europe.Byanalyzing flints at anarchaeological site on thebank of the river Jordan, researchers at Israel’sHebrew Universitydiscovered that earlycivilizations had learned

to light fires, a turningpoint that allowed them toventure into unknownlands.

A previous study of thesite published in 2004showed that man had beenable to control fire — forexample transferring itby means of burningbranches — in that earlytime period. But re-searchers now say thatancient man could actually

start fire, rather thanrelying on naturalphenomena such aslightning.

The new study, pub-lished in a recent editionof Quaternary ScienceReviews, mapped 12archaeological layers atGesher Benot Yaaqov innorthern Israel. While theydid not find remnants ofancient matches orlighters, Alperson-Afilsaid the patterns of burnedflint found in the sameplace throughout 12civilizations was evidenceof fire-making ability, though the methods usedwere unclear.—Internet

But, even though they are seen bysome as cheap fixes for climate changewhen many nations are worried abouteconomic recession, such “geo-engineering”

proposals have to overcome widecriticism that they are fanciful and couldhave unforeseen side effects.

Bumblebees Learn The SweetSmell Of Foraging Success

LONDON, 27 Oct—Bumblebees use flowerscent to guide their nest-mates to good foodsources, according to sci-entists from Queen Mary,University of London.

For any animal, find-ing food on its own canbe time consuming andinefficient; social animalssuch as bees reduce theseproblems by informingtheir peers of plentifulsites, and ‘recruiting’

them to the search.Honeybees use their

waggle-dance to tell nest-mates the distance and di-rection of a food source. But bumblebees can’tcommunicate geographi-cal information in this way;instead, they release a re-cruitment pheromone inthe nest to encourage theircolleagues to venture outin search of food. Butwhere should they look?

Voices of Labutta dwellers aboutrestoration of their businesses

I had conducted interviews with some local farm-ers and fishermen of Labutta Township in AyeyawadyDivision from 16 to 21 October 2008 to present theirliving conditions for public information.

When asked about his business and livingconditions, U Aung Myat of Kyakhmaw modelvillage said, “I have a 26-acre land and I growHsinthwelat, Manawthukha, Pawhsanyin andHnankar strains of paddy in it. The governmenthas provided me with 25 baskets of paddy seeds,12 bags of fertilizer, a Leya-22 brand power-tiller,fuel and pesticides. I lost my draught cattle in thestorm. Now I have got a power-tiller, and it is moreconvenient for me to plough my fields with it than

with cattle. I grow more paddy this year thanprevious years, and about 95 per cent of it issuccessful. The government and local and foreignorganizations have provided me with relief sup-plies including rice, edible oil and beans and pulsesthat are adequate for me to have till the completionof the harrowing of my fields. I have not run out ofthe provisions yet. Paddy will be in season in theend of this month. Regarding the growing of paddy, there is no difference between in the past and atpresent. Kyaukhmaw Village-tract has more than40,000 acres of paddy fields, and as you see, all thepaddy fields here are thriving.”
