Smallpox vaccine mayserve as firewall against

May— People who arevaccinated with thesmallpox vaccine called“vaccinia” may havegreater resistance againstHIV infection, a newstudy finds.

The notion stemsfrom recent work byresearchers at theUniversity of California,Los Angeles, and GeorgeMason University inManassas, Va. Thefindings were publishedin the May issue ofImmunology, a journal ofthe British MedicalCouncil (BMC).

If true, the findingcould link the rapid, late20th-century spread ofHIV to the simultaneousvanquishing of smallpox

disease and the removalof the smallpox vaccinefrom worldwidedistribution, experts say.

The vaccine forsmallpox was graduallyremoved from usebetween the 1950s andthe 1970s, followingglobal elimination of thedisease.

“There have beenseveral proposedexplanations for the rapidspread of HIV in Africa,”Dr. Raymond Weinsteinof George MasonUniversity said in a newsrelease. These include“wars, the reuse ofunsterilized needles andthe contamination ofearly batches of poliovaccine,” he said.

trading rules proposedON Tuesday that areaimed at avoiding marketplunges like the one thatstunned Wall Street on 6May.

The rules would takeeffect in mid-June undera six-month pilotprogramme agreed to bymajor US exchanges andthe Securities andExchange Commission.

Under the plan, trading of any Standard

& Poor’s 500 stock thatrises or falls 10 percentor more within a five-minute span would behalted for five minutes. These rules, known as“circuit breakers,” wouldbe applied if the priceswing occurs between9:45 am and 3:35 pmEastern time. That’salmost the entire tradingday. On 6 May, about 30stocks listed in the S&P500 index fell at least 10percent within fiveminutes.

Importantly, the newcircuit breakers wouldapply to all USexchanges. Most of the50 or so US exchangesregulate themselves anddesign their own toolsfor slowing or haltingtrading.

During the recentplunge, the New YorkStock Exchange slowedtrading according to itsrules but the orders thatcouldn’t be executedmigrated in a torrent toelectronic exchanges, industry officials said.
