Regular sessions of First Pyithu Hluttaw,Amyotha Hluttaw and Pyidaungsu Hluttawtook place at respective halls of Hluttaw Buildingin Nay Pyi Taw the other day.

Representatives to hluttaws concernedall attended regular sessions. It was the dayMyanmar saw resurgence of parliamentarydemocracy system, which represented awatershed in Myanmar’s political trend.

A hluttaw (parliament) is a body in whichthe people vest legislative power. It is fair tosay that a hluttaw is an organization thatreflects the life of the public. The government, the administrative body, and the judicial bodyare responsible for bringing parliamentaryresolutions into operation.

So, the responsibility of the parliament isvery formidable. The major duty of MPs is tomake laws and amend existing laws. In addition,it has to practise executive and judicial powersin line with the constitution. In Pyithu Hluttaw, these sovereign powers are exercised accordingto the procedures.

MPs irrespective of party have to servenational interest as the common task. They alsohave to be harmonious with one another incoordinating tasks, putting public interest inthe fore.

It is therefore mandatory for MPs toshow a sense of duty and remain loyal to thepublic and the nation without dogmatism, personality cult, sectarianism and racism inorder to shape the future of the nation.

Running-related injuries on the rise in US kidsNEW YORK, 1 Feb—The number of running-

related injuries suffered by American youngstersaged 6 to 18 increased 34 percent between 1994and 2007, according to a new study.

During that period, there were an estimated225,344 such injuries treated in US hospitalemergency departments, an average of more than16,000 per year.

The majority of the running-related injurieswere sprains and strains to the lower extremities.Falls accounted for one-third of the injuries andmore than half of the injuries occurred at school, said the researchers at the Centre for Injury Researchand Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital inColumbus, Ohio.

Youngsters aged 6 to 14 were more likely to be

injured as a result of a fall and while running atschool, while teens aged 15 to 18 were more likelyto be injured while running in the street or at a sportsand recreation facility.

“Encouraging children and adolescents to runfor exercise is a great way to ensure that theyremain physically active,” Lara McKenzie, principleinvestigator at the centre, said in a hospital newsrelease. “However, the findings from our studyshow that formal, evidence-based and age-specificguidelines are needed for pediatric runners so thatparents, coaches and physical education teacherscan teach children the proper way to run in order toreduce the risk of injury.”

A Super Bowl loss can kill youLOS ANGELES, 1 Feb — A loss for the home team in the Super Bowl

has been linked to a higher death rate — especially among the elderly,US researchers suggest. A study, published in the journal Clinical Cardiology, shows theLos Angeles Super Bowl loss of 1980 was linked to a 15 percentincrease in all circulatory deaths associated with the Super Bowl loss inwomen there was a 27 percent increase in all circulatory deaths linkedto the loss, while in older patients, there was a 22 percent increase incirculatory deaths associated with the Super Bowl loss.

There were an extra 2.6 deaths per 100,000 people age 65 and oldereach day during two weeks following the loss, but for those age 65 andunder, the increased death rate was 0.11 per 100,000 people each dayfollowing the loss. However, the Super Bowl win appeared to reducedeaths more frequently in older people and in women, the study says.

related offenses after detaining a total of 12suspects in separate raids on two hijacked shipsrecently. Five Somalis captured in the ArabianSea were brought Sunday to South Korea, wherethey could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

The seven other Somalis arrived under tightsecurity at Malaysia’s key western harbourMonday aboard the MT Bunga Laurel, whichthey attacked 20 Jan in the Gulf of Aden.Malaysian naval commandos stormed the shipand rescued 23 Filipino crew members less thantwo hours after the pirates boarded it.

Authorities will interrogate the Somalis in a“thorough investigation” before deciding whatcharges they could face, a federal police officialsaid on condition of anonymity because he wasnot authorized to make public statements.Malaysia’s plan to charge them could becomplicated because the vessel attacked wasPanama-registered, even though it was charteredand operated by a Malaysian shipping firm.

None of the crew was Malaysian, and theship’s cargo was being transported to Singapore.

But officials have said the pirates could stillface unspecified charges because the ship hadMalaysian interests.—Internet

Study says phone counseling canhelp cut heart disease risk

NEW YORK, 1 Feb—A greater percentage of people at highrisk for heart disease keep up their exercise and diet programmeswhen they get group telephone counseling, according to astudy.

Everyone in the group of nearly 700 patients in the study, published in the American Journal of Cardiology, saw doctorswho evaluated their health and got advice about making goodlifestyle changes. But some also got group counseling sessionsby phone on — and that helped more of them stick with thesuggested changes.

The message itself is nothing new — eat more fruits andvegetables, cut back on salt, exercise more, and stop smoking.“It’s more of a question in how you can deliver it. We all knowwhat’s recommended for lifestyle change,” said lead authorRobert Nolan, a psychologist who studies heart disease at theUniversity Health Network in Toronto.
