Palali airport to be upgraded to intl level: Sri Lanka is to develop the Palali airstrip in Jaffna as aninternational airport, mainly to cater to Indian traffic. An official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation said that

they would seek Indian assistance for this venture. The development of the North is also of high priority in

the governments agenda and an international airport in the peninsula would boost its regional economy in a

big way. When fully operational, the Palali airport would also cater to the growing Indian traffic. In addition,

the government has also decided to invest on a second runway at the Colombo airport, enabling even thelarge A380s to land in Colombo. Financial assistance for this purpose is expected from Japan.

SL fast tracking China trade through Hong Kong: Sri Lanka is now trying to fast track its trade with Chinathrough the worlds most globalized economy Hong Kong. There is vast, unrealized trade potential

between Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, which we need to explore jointly. The Hong Kong Trade Development

Council with its vast network is an ideal partner for Sri Lankan companies to explore partnership

opportunities with the Chinese market, said Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of Industry and Commerce of Sri

Lanka. The arrival of Hong Kong based Shangri-La hotels to Sri Lanka is now well known. Hong Kong is the

second most globalized economy according to Ernst & Young and is Sri Lankas 1 9th trading partner in terms

of exports, which stood at USD105 mn in 2012. The bilateral trade between both countries has beenfluctuating and in 2012, it reported USD689.33 mn. Apparel, gems and tea are our main exports. We also

believe that there is vast, unrealized trade potential, between the two countries, which we need to jointly

explore. Todays seminar is an important step in this direction and I am pleased to see strong participation

from Sri Lankas private sector as well, Bathiudeen said.
