Sri Lanka sees surge of visitors from China: Chinese visitors to Sri Lanka has surged 164% to 3,353 inNovember 2012 with total visitors in the first 12 months up 46% to 22,176 data from the tourist
promotion office shows. It is not clear how many are 'tourists' per se, no breakdown available for
business visitors at this stage. Many workers from China are in Chinese funded state projects in the
country. Sri Lanka's tourist promotion agency has been pushing for Chinese visitors with growing
affluence in the country following nearly five years of steady currency appreciation. In neighboring
Maldives, Chinese arrivals have been a lifeline to the tourism industry which has been hit by declining
arrivals from Europe. Chinese visitors to the Maldives rose 14.9% to 213,868 in the 11 months to

SLPA designs third, fourth phases: Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has designed the third and fourthphases of the Hambantota Port with more than 20 million TEU annual capacity to handle containerized
cargo with a view to cater for the growing demand in the East-West main shipping route.Dr. Priyath
Wickrama, Chairman Sri Lanka Ports Authority expressed these views speaking at the Sea Trade Middle
East Maritime Conference held recently in Dubai on the subject Modern Container Terminals. He said
the Hambantota port will provide world class infrastructure facilities for break bulk, and other service
operations. Conventional cargo presently handled at Colombo Port will be diverted to Phase I and II of
the Mahinda Rajapaksa Port in Hambantota, with the conversion of some of the general cargo berths in
Colombo as container feeder berths. Such diversion of other operations to Hambantota will create more
facilities for container handling at the Colombo Port. Airing his views on the Colombo Harbour
development he said that the new port will consist of three 1,200 metre long container terminals with
three main berths per each terminal to handle mega container carriers. The SLPA will add 7.5 MTEU
capacity after completion of the third stage of the Colombo Port Expansion Project. The terminals will be
operational by August 2013 with latest equipment. The East Container Terminal will be operated by Sri
Lanka Ports Authority and the South Container Terminal is to be operated by Colombo International
Container Terminals on BOT basis. We will call tenders for the West Container Terminal in the near
future, depending on the requirement.

Japans Production Slumps to 2011 Quake-Aftermath Low: Japans industrial output tumbled more thanforecast to the lowest level since the aftermath of the record 2011 earthquake, bolstering the case for
Prime Minister to unleash large-scale stimulus. The 1.7% drop in November from October exceeded all
27 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey, a government report showed today in Tokyo. The nation also
remained mired in deflation, with consumer prices excluding fresh food dropping 0.1% from a year
before, compared with a central bank goal of 1% and Abes desired target of 2%. With neighbor South
Korea reporting a jump in production almost double the highest estimate among economists surveyed,
Japans data may strengthen the new Abe administrations determination to drive down the yen and
force the Bank of Japan to add monetary stimulus.

according to the median of 12 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. Separately, Italian borrowing costs
stayed close to a two-year low at an auction of bills. Italys economy shrank 0.2% in the three months
through September, about a third of the contraction recorded in the previous quarter. Still, the countrys
fourth recession since 2001 is now in its second year and this quarter is marked by a very negative
context, business lobby Confindustria said in a report last month.

China Budget Gap Said Set to Widen 50% to USD192 Bn: China plans to increase the budget deficit by50 percent to 1.2 trillion yuan (USD192 bn) in 2013, including the sale of 350 bn yuan of bonds to fund
local governments, a person familiar with the matter said. The central government deficit is budgeted at
850 bn yuan, according to the person, who asked not to be identified as the deliberations are not public.
The nations leaders target about 8% trade growth, down from this years 10% goal, the person said. A
bigger fiscal deficit may give Chinas new leadership under Xi Jinping more room for tax cuts and
measures to boost urbanization and consumer demand. The 1.2 trillion-yuan total compares with an 800
bn-yuan target this year, which included a 550 bn-yuan central government deficit and 250 bn yuan in
local government bond sales. The year 2013 is the first year for the new Chinese leadership, and
urbanization will receive a big push, said Zhang Zhiwei, chief China economist at Nomura Holdings Inc.
in Hong Kong. Financial support, including an expanded fiscal deficit in the budget, is needed for that.[Source: www.bloomberg.com]
Labor Market, Housing in US Strengthen Into 2013: Economy: The labor market and housingstrengthened, signaling the US expansion may withstand the fiscal impasse. The economy is holding up
just fine right now, said head of US economics at Renaissance Macro Research LLC in New York. Folks
that are thinking there was going to be some cataclysmic economic shock to close out the year, I dont
think thats right.Applications for unemployment-insurance payments fell by 12,000 to 350,000 in the
week ended Dec. 22, bringing the average over the past month to the lowest level in more than four
years, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. Purchases of new houses rose 4.4% in
November to a 377,000 annual pace, the highest level since April 2010, according to data from the
Commerce Department. A third report showed consumer confidence slumped this month.[Source: www.bloomberg.com]
Brazil Central Bank Cuts Reserve Requirements to Spur Investment: Brazils central bank lowered bankreserve requirements to spur flagging investments in the worlds second-largest emerging market. Large
banks that provide credit for capital-goods investment can deduct as much as 20% of reserve
requirements for their so-called on calldeposits that can be withdrawn at any time, the central bank
said in a statement today. This change applies to banks with a minimum of 6 bn reais (USD2.9 bn) in total
equity, and the central bank said it expects the measure will create 15 bn reais in fresh credit. The move
signals a shift toward macro-prudential measures to spark growth in the worlds sixth-largest economy,
said Pedro Tuesta, senior Latin America economist at 4Cast Inc. On Dec. 23, President Dilma Rousseffcalled on the countrys businesses to increase investments after authorities this year cut taxes and
announced infrastructure spending aimed at making Brazils economy more competitive.
