EDITORIAL

Dear Partners and Friends,

The end of 2015 is lurking just around the corner, and we hope that it has

been a successful and a happy year for you. The coming to an end of another

year does not only encourage reflection, but also lends itself to

looking ahead and setting new goals.

2015 was yet another busy year for us. In addition to our daily endeavours to

find partners for Austrian companies and to inform Austrian enterprises about

opportunities in Australia, New Zealand as well as the Pacific Islands, it was a year packed with

participations in trade show and networking events in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. We are proud

to say that we have played a part in the development of many new business connections between the

markets on this side of the world and Austria.

After saying good-bye to my deputy of many years, Hannes Scheiner, we are very pleased to welcome

Miss Shanay Hubmann as the new Deputy Trade Commissioner at Advantage Austria in Sydney.

Shanay joined us mid-November after holding previous posts at our New Delhi and Lagos offices. With

her positive attitude and engaging, bubbling personality she has already added a spark to our team.

She is looking forward to meeting you in the weeks to come.

The start of 2016 will see further personnel changes: After 8 fantastic years in Sydney, I sadly have to

say good-bye to this extraordinary country that has grown very close to my heart and become my

second home, to many wonderful friends and business partners, and to my great team. I really wish to

thank you all for your ongoing support and fruitful cooperation over the years.

My successor Karl Hartleb - currently Deputy Head of Advantage Austria - will hit Australian shores

mid-January. New people generally bring fresh ideas with them and 2016 will, therefore, also be an

opportunity for the team at Advantage Austria Sydney to think anew outside the square and focus on

new challenges. Please have a look at our event calendar on page 10 to get a bit of a feel on what lies

ahead. Stay tuned for detailed information about these events and other initiatives in the coming

issues of this newsletter.

There is no time more fitting than now to say ‘Thank

You’ for your continuous interest in Austrian

products and businesses. All of us at the Austrian

Trade Commission in Sydney wish you and your

beloved ones a wonderful festive season and a

happy, healthy and prosperous New Year

SMART TECHNOLOGIES FROM AUSTRIA FOR THE CITIES OF THE FUTURE

In recent years, the term “Smart City“ has been used to describe a range of holistic approaches to

urban development. Aimed at making cities greener, more efficient, more caring and more

technologically advanced, these design concepts embrace technology-based innovations as well as

economic and societal change in urban environments. One thing common to all these technologies is

that they improve quality of life and make our cities more intelligent and environmentally friendly

through smart resource management.

With many dynamic and highly specialised companies contributing innovative solutions to help

conquer the challenges of the 21st century, Austria has become one of the top nations in the field of

digital technologies for Smart Cities. Their achievements and reliability have earned them an

unparalleled reputation for bringing innovative products and services to market.

You can find out more about the range of services provided by the Austrian Smart City/Smart

Technologies sector in the latest edition of FRESH VIEW, the industry specialist magazine, which

showcases more than 160 Austrian firms from the ‘Smart Mobility’, ‘Smart Energy and Environmental

Technology’, ‘Smart ICT Infrastructure’ and ‘Security’ sectors.

Enhancing liveable cities and communities will also be the center

theme of next year‘s World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems

hosted by the City of Melbourne from 10 to 14 October. Advantage

Austria is planning to participate in this major event with an Austrian

group stand. Further details will be available on our website early 2016. If

you are interested in participating together with your Austrian business

partner, please do not hesitate to contact us.

MELBOURNE’S CHADSTONE GETS MODERN GLASS ROOF

Chadstone is the name of Australia's “fashion capital” in Melbourne’s suburbs which with 530 stores,

cinemas and many other attractions is also the largest shopping centre on the Australian continent.

Currently, RTKL and Atelier One Engineers are adding thousands of square metres of retailing space

to the centre. The challenging project also includes the construction of an exciting steel-and-glass

roof with a total area of 7,080 m². The building contract for this grand roof was awarded to the

Austrian branch of Seele group - a globally active, leading façade building contractor specialiced in

architecture which uses the materials glass, steel, aluminium and membrane.

Two key features of the design are its open style, with a gallery

-type second floor, and the high, dome-like glass top that

allows plenty of daylight to reach both floors. The glass roof

has to follow the line of the shopping malls below and

consequently the result is a free-form gridshell spanning up to

35 m, in varying shapes, geometries and a dramatic pitch at

the centre.

Owing to its dimensions and form as well as the logistical

challenges involved, the Chadstone roof is yet another struc-

ture that demonstrates the wealth of skills available within

Seele. To read more on this project, please visit our website. © novion - Chadstone project

SKIDATA IMPLEMENTS FIRST TICKETLESS PARKING SYSTEM IN AUSTRALIA

The Austrian company SKIDATA is one of the world‘s leading providers of access solutions and visitor

management systems. Currently it is represented in 73 counties. Over 10,000 installations provide

quick and secure access for people at shopping centres, major airports, cities, sport stadiums, event

precincts and commercial car parking sites.

SKIDATA Australasia, the subsidiary of SKIDATA Austria, has recently implemented an innovative

solution at Westfield Miranda Shopping Centre. This cutting-edge system replaces traditional ticket

based parking access control by a ticketless parking solution which ensures much higher convenience

for shoppers.

The system was developed in Australia and relies on license plate recognition technology. The

customers’ number plate details are recorded on entry, logging the time of entry against the number

plate which becomes the key identifier in lieu of a paper ticket.

Furthermore, a purpose built digital eco system was

implemented to support the overall shopper journey; e.g. users

can check elapsed parking time from their smart phones. After

user registration an SMS notification is received on entry and

payment can be processed via a linked credit card. The flagship

site at the Miranda Shopping Centre is the first large scale high

transaction deployment of its kind globally.

AUSTRIAN BREAKS RECORD AT GRUELLING CROCODILE TROPHY RACE

For the 21st time, cyclists from all over the world competed in the Crocodile Trophy in October this

year. The legendary nine-day mountain bike stage race took place in Tropical North Queensland and

with a stellar elite line-up of some of the best marathon and endurance athletes in the world, the

majority of the rider field again was packed with amateur mountain bikers who every year seek an

adventure on their bikes. Among them – was again – the Upper Austrian Martin Wisata who made

Crocodile Trophy history with a record-breaking sixth participation in this gruelling race.

The Crocodile Trophy was founded and is still run by his fellow Austrian, the ex-Tour de France racer,

Gerhard Schönbacher. It is known as the oldest and most iconic mountain bike stage race in the world.

The stage plan is the most versatile of its kind - the approximately 100 competitors race for nine days

from the jungle in Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands and via bush single tracks to Irvinebank in the

unique Australian Outback. The finish after more than 770km and 17,000m of elevation then takes

them onto the breath-takingly beautiful Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas.

Martin Wisata grew up in Ried/Innkreis in Upper Austria and has called Australia home since 2003.

"You get to ride with cyclists from all over the world and whether you're an elite rider or an amateur

rider, everyone is in for the same distance and the same conditions each day", explains the 38-year

old, who owns a mountain bike racing business near Sydney, Rocky Trail Entertainment. Wisata runs

the business together with his wife Juliane who has been the Press Officer for the Crocodile Trophy in

Australia for the past few years.

What keeps him coming back, adds Wisata, is

the cameraderie that develops among the

riders. This year he brought a team of four

riders from Sydney and Canberra with him.

"Most riders have known this race since their

childhood, following it on TV and in the news,

just like me", Wisata explains the fascination

of the race. "The riders tell me they come for

the adventure and to cross the finish line after

nine days with a smile - it's an incredible

feeling to be a part of this very exclusive group

of cyclists from all over the world who can call

themselves 'Crocodile Trophy finishers'." © CROCODILE TROPHY / REGINA STANGER - At the finish line

GLOBAL LEADERS IN PLASTIC-RECYCLING

Plastic has been the most common material of modern life for a long

time. At the same token, the material poses a threat to the global

environment and to human health due to its longevity.

Realizing the worldwide demand for effective and innovative solutions for plastic-recycling, the

The Martogg Group - Australia’s largest privately

owned plastics compounder - chose EREMA as its

partner for branching out into recycling. Martogg

operates several EREMA systems at different

locations all over Australia, claiming EREMA’s

technologies represent the state-of-the-art in the

plastics-recycling industry in Australia.

For over 170 years, the Austrian company Schmid Schrauben Hainfeld GmbH has specialised in manu-

facturing timber construction screws and special parts that keep together even the largest wooden
