Easter Extended Project – Comparing HIC and LIC Volcanic Eruptions

Your task is to compare a volcanic eruption in a High Income Country (HIC) with one in a Low Income Country (LIC). The suggested examples are Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland (HIC) and Pinatubo, Philippines (LIC). Remember to include comparable facts You might want to include:• Location (and maps).• What is a HIC? What is a LIC?• Why are there volcanoes in these areas? • What are the tectonic plates and what type of boundary?• Diagrams of these plate boundaries and what is occurring there.• What type of volcano they are.• What these types of volcanoes look like and diagrams. • Events leading up to the eruption.• Date / Time of eruption.• Images• Primary effects and Secondary effects.• Short term and Long term responses.

Presentation Methods

You can present your case study in any way you like. It does not have to be completed on the computer and it would be brilliant to have some work to put up on classroom walls.

Some suggestions are:

• Power Point presentation.• Poster or separate posters for each volcano.• Infographics.• Mind maps.• Newspaper style reports.• Fact file reports.

You should also complete the 2 attached word documents:• One is a table of comparisons of the 2 eruptions.• The other is about why impact is different in HIC and LIC.
