COURAGE COMPASSION SENSITIVITY INTELLIGENCE VITALITY
Our Lower School AssemblyBefore the break, we had an
exciting assembly in the Lower
School. Everyone gathered in thelobby of the school. Mr. Page, our
new principal, explained about the
ESLR tickets. We get ESLR tickets by
showing our ESLRs. Our ESLRs are
Vitality, Courage, Sensitivity,
Intelligence, and Compassion. We
get Vitality tickets when we try our
best to do a new thing. We get
Courage tickets when we are brave
to try new things. We get Sensitivity
tickets when we are nice to each
other. We get Intelligence tickets
when we are thinking and learning. We get Compassion tickets when we
are caring about each others
feelings. Many classes got many
ESLR tickets already. Mr. Page was
impressed with all the classes!
Mr. Page also showed us a film
that showed what to do in QISS and
what not to do. Like how to walk in
the stairs and how to not to walk in
the stairs, how to enter the library
and how to not enter the library.
Everyone was an excellent actor in
the film. They had so much fun being
in the film! Almost everyone was inthe film, and they acted so nicely!
The assembly concluded with two
little performances by the first grade
and the Pre-K and kindergarteners.
QISS Open House
On August 27th, we had our Open
House. Open House is when our
parents come to see our teachers and
classrooms. They talked to the
homeroom teachers and our
specialists. Now, they know more
about our school. They are also closer
to our staff in QISS.
Dr.Teston and Mr.Page made a
presentation in the auditorium. They
talked about the future of QISS and
about amazing students in this school.
They introduced all of the teachers.
Then the PTA gave a talk. Then we all
went to the classroom to talk to the
teachers. Amy, Leeann, Roy, and I
visited Mr.Bertholet in the library. I had
so much fun at the Open House. I play
outside until my parents came to pick
me up. I am sure that everyone liked
Open House.

WHATS UP LOWER SCHOOL?
Angela recently got thechance to interview our new
music teacher. Lets find out
more about Ms. Muller!
What is music?
Music is a universal
language. Music is a way for
everyone to communicate and
express how they feel. It does
not matter where you comefrom or what language you
speak, everyone can listen to
your music and understand.
How long have you been a
music teacher?
This is my third year teaching.
Before coming to China I
taught for two years in SouthKorea at Chadwick
International.
What does it feel like to be a
music teacher?
It is beautiful when a career
and a passion come together.
Teaching music to young
people gives me the
opportunity to share
something I love with future
generations.
What instruments do you play?
Depends how wellInUniversity, to be a music
teacher we were taught how to
play many different
instruments. I can play the
flute, trumpet, and piano the
best. I would love to learn to
play some Chinese
instruments as well as the
harp!
Do you enjoy singing?
I enjoy singing very much! I
love singing music from
Disney music, or sing along to
some of my favorite songs on
the radio while driving. I also
love teaching students how to
sing and singing with them.
What do you have to do to
become a music teacher?
I went to University for 4 and
years in America. I was
taught by other teachers, how
to teach, how to play different
instruments, how to sing, and I
was given time to practice
being in different classrooms.
Is it different teaching music to
International students?
At QISS, I always need to
remember that my students
are learning English whilelearning music. Instead of
some parts of the world wher
I can just say, Play louder,
here it would be better for me
to show what I am asking the
students to do. Is it different t
other parts of the world? No,
we are all here to learn, make
music, and we all progress at
different levels.
Do you have music in your
dreams?
I dont know if I dream about
music, but many times a song
that I am teaching to one of m
classes will be stuck in my
head all day. Then I will still
be thinking about it when I
wake up!
What do you wish to bring to
humankind with your music?
I wish to bring joy and
laughter. I hope to give my
students a way to express
themselves.

WHATS UP LOWER SCHOOL?
Baseball and soccer areimportant sports, but many
people dont knowthe rules of
baseball.
Baseball is hard to play. There
are many rules. For example, if
you have 3 strikes youre out. If
you dont hit the ball, you cant
score. If your 3 out your cant
hit in these.
In the 3rdgrade we are always
playing soccer, especially
Alex, Amy, Yuri, Colin, Kevinand Luke. My favorite sports
are soccer and baseball and my
favorite baseball player is
Kershaw. Im always playing
soccer and baseball!
SwimmingBy Leann Kim
Students at QISS love
swimming. Some of my friends
are good at swimming. Welearned some swimming rules
and sometimes we have free
swimming times. Last month,
we went to the swimming pool
each Saturday. It is called the
Director`s Swim. Dr. Teston
goes swimming with us.

Do you know that swimming isfun? Of course! Why not? Mr.K
is our swimming teacher. He
makes sure that we are safe and
good in the water. We learned
how to free style and do the
frog kick. In our class, we had a
swimming contest but we didntget to see the score!

Family Catches Croc!
By Mall Wang (Grade 4)
Recently, my dad had told me about a real and amazing thing. He said
that in America, somebody trapped a huge crocodile. It was an amazing
21 feet long! In the pictures, his mouth is taped and he looks tired. The
family that caught the crocodile had special things to catch it. Its really
unbelievable that they caught a 21 foot long crocodile!!!

At the 2014 Brazil World Cup, there was a biting
attack.
On June 24th, there was a soccer match
between Uruguay and Italy. The Uruguay
striker, Louis Suarez, bit an Italian defender
named Giorgio Chiellini during the match. It
was not the first time he bit someone, it was the
third time. He bit so strong that there was a
mark on the player. The referee didnt give
Suarez a red card because the referee didnt
see it.
Uruguay won the match. The score was 1-0 with
Diego Godins goal. Fifa said that Suarez cant
be in soccer matches until October.
Giorgio Chiellini said to Fifa that the
punishment was too harsh. But Fifa still gave the
punishment. His English professional team,
Liverpool didntwant him, so Suarez moved to a
Spanish team called Barcelona. And now,
people call him Vampire.
