Is it the latest mobile phone, a new laptop, peace in the world (or just at home), or me to spend with those we love? The adverts on the television will be trying to tell you that happiness can be bought, at their shop or on their website, and that it is all about giving giſts in order to feel close to each other. Even when the other person is on the moon! Of course, it is nice to give giſts and it is also very nice to receive them. It is really special to see a smile on the face of the other person when they open the wrapping and you can tell that they really like whatever you bought or made for them. And those mes when we receive a really thoughul giſt we experience that warm glow of knowing that someone is thinking of us, we are remembered and loved. It doesn’t have to be a big giſt; it really is the thought that counts. But somemes in the countdown of “Shopping days to Christmas” we can forget that the real reason for the season is the giſt that God has given us. Somemes it might feel like God is a million miles away, perhaps further than the moon, but Christmas is the reminder that God wants to be close to us. When we remember the birth of Jesus all those years ago, and we remember that he came to earth to be one of us because he loves us so much, we might start to understand how valuable we are to God. And when we realise what it is we have been given, and the love that is behind the giſt, then we understand the reason for the celebraons and the joyful songs that tell of the wonder of the birth of God’s son. My prayer is that this Christmas you feel closer to God when you realise what a special person you are and how important you are to Him. May you know about His love for you through the giſt of His son. Amen. Rev Remco van den Heuvel Wendover Free Church We hope you are in the mood for a festive sing-a-long. Aylesbury Vale District Council is asking local residents, businesses and community groups to have a voice in the future of housing, jobs and key policies, as part of consultation on the next stage of the Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP).

Following approval by councillors, a document setting out the issues and options for the VALP has been produced and is available to view at www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/valp. Residents have until 4 December to view this document and give their views and ideas on what the plan should achieve, how new homes and jobs should be distributed, and what new policies could be introduced to manage development between now and 2033.

Councillor Carole Paternoster, Cabinet Member for Growth Strategy, said: “We need to build another 31,000 new homes in Aylesbury Vale by 2033 and the new Local Plan will provide the framework for how the Vale will grow and develop to accommodate this. It is really important that people take this opportunity to get involved by letting us know

what they think about the different options we have identified and by raising any issues they feel need addressing.”

The Local Plan will, once finalised, provide firm guidance on how planning applications should be considered and say where new development should or should not take place. This is the second public consultation stage in the new Local Plan’s preparation and it includes nine potential options for distributing new development. The options include developing urban extensions at Milton Keynes/Bletchley; using land more efficiently by raising the average density of new development; creating a whole new settlement somewhere in the Vale; and a combination of these.

You can view the consultation and give feedback via www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/valp. The responses received will inform the development of a draft local plan. There will be two further consultation periods prior to the Local Plan public examination in 2017.

Tree threatened with destruction by HS2 project wins title

The Cubbington Pear, a 250 year old tree directly in the line of the proposed HS2 rail link, has beaten some of the most famous and historically significant trees in the country to become the English Tree of the Year 2015. It will now go forward, along with the winners of the equivalent Woodland Trust competitions in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, which were also announced in late October on Countryfile on BBC1, to compete for European Tree of the Year in February 2016.

Over the last few years, the Cubbington Pear Tree in Warwickshire has become the poster-boy for all the trees, which according to HS2 Ltd themselves includes 97 ancient woodlands, that are under threat from the

HS2 project. Campaigners believe that the fact the Cubbington Pear beat so many historically significant trees shows the strength of public opposition to the natural destruction HS2 would wreak.

The competition, run by the Woodland Trust, was decided by the public voting for a

shortlist of ten finalists. The Cubbington Pear Tree, which was the only finalist under threat from felling, took over a third of more than 10,000 votes cast by members of the public.

It received more than twice as many votes as the second-placed Tolpuddle Martyrs Tree, which is recognised as the birthplace of the international trade union movement, and more than three times as many votes as the 2000 year-old third-placed Ankerwycke Yew at Runnymede, which was once worshipped by druids and was witness to the signing of the Magna Carta 800 years ago.

December 1915The Gallipoli Campaign was acknowledged as a failure and the allies began to withdraw. The Battle of Verdun ended with 550,000 French and 450,000 German casualties. General Sir Douglas Haig replaced Field Marshal Sir John French as Commander in Chief of British forces in France. Strict instructions were sent from both the British and the German Headquarters forbidding a repeat of the Christmas 1914 fraternisation, but that did not stop some minor gatherings in No Man’s Land on Christmas Day. As a result, two British officers appeared in front of a Court Martial, but, because of their good service records, received only light reprimands.

In Wendover efforts were made to entertain the troops who were billeted locally. The Parish Church Record noted that: “Teas were served on Xmas afternoon and again on Boxing Day afternoon to nearly 400 soldiers. There were two ‘sittings-down’ each afternoon and everything went without a hitch in spite of the fact that not a single piece of bread and butter had been cut at 1 o’clock. Supplies had been most generously sent in by almost everyone in Wendover. Mrs Sharp acted as head organiser and she was ably assisted by a band of other ladies and also by as many men as could be induced to leave their

own fireside. One of the most amusing events of the evening was the singing competition judged by the vicar”.

Mr Oliver Beeson, bootmaker, of the High Street, Wendover, advertised in the Bedfordshire Times of 31 December that he would teach injured soldiers to repair boots. The offer was open to men who had lost a leg or a foot in the war and preference would be given to men from Bucks or Beds.

The Aylesbury Court report in the Bucks Herald of 11 December carried a piece

with the heading: “A Lady’s Dilemma”. It read: “Ethel Lyndon Robinson, Cedar Vale, Wendover, was summoned for quitting a motor car without taking precautions against it being started in her absence. The defendant pleaded guilty. Sgt S G Bennett said that he saw the car standing in the Market Square in Aylesbury for a quarter of an hour unattended. The engine was running the whole time. When the lady returned he pointed out that an offence had been committed. The defendant said that her chauffeur had enlisted and she was really afraid to stop the engine lest she should not be able to start again. The bench ordered payment of 5s 6d costs, without a conviction.”

The saga of the newly erected Public Convenience in Back Street continued. A report at the December Parish Council noted that the Convenience had suffered “wilful damage” and that “steps are being taken to find the culprits and prevent improper use of the premises”.

If the rumours are true then sometime after the end of November the Select Committee will finally make a decision on the mitigation for Wendover. By then most of the Wendover petitioners will have been heard, including our MP David Lidington. Now whatever the mitigation is the details will be contained in what is termed Additional Provisions – AP5. These changes will go out for consultation and those who are impacted will have the opportunity to petition again.

So what is likely to be in AP5? We know what HS2 Ltd. would like it to be, because they have published a summary – an extension to the green tunnel to the south by 100m and a whole load of 6m high noise barriers. Now when I first read this I thought that it was completely undemocratic that it had been decided while the Select Committee were still hearing petitions from Wendover. However it was pointed out to me that this was just HS2 Ltd. trying to get ahead of the game by doing the work on the minimum changes they thought

the Select Committee would tell them to do. Now as I write this the Select Committee have not heard the detail about TBOW – Tunnel bored one way from the south. Neither have HS2 Ltd., so it is not surprising that they have not mentioned it. That being the case we can only hope that on the 25th November Hilary Wharf put up a good technical case for it, that Wendover HS2 have strongly supported it and David Lidington has thrown his support behind the proposal. We should know soon.

So AP5 could contain the changes necessary for a tunnel, could be extensions to the green tunnel or just a collection of barriers. So we should all read AP5 with interest. Now people adversely impacted by AP5 will have the opportunity to petition against it. However I need to mention that HS2 Ltd. are taking a tougher stance on AP petitions. Their argument is that it is not sufficient that you do not like it, you have to be specifically adversely impacted by the Additional Provisions compared to the original scheme.

In the case of Wendover if it was just barriers for example it probably means you could not claim it is noisier, however you could claim it was more visually intrusive.

I said earlier that HS2 Ltd. have not mentioned the TBOW tunnel because they are at this point unaware of it, however even if they did know about it they would still continue their stance of denying us a tunnel as not necessary. They have not listened to the petitions, and only pay attention to the Select Committee. So it was not surprising that they were continuing this mantra on the 7th November when they turned up in Wendover for an information day. Despite the horrible weather the turnout was excellent. I have to say I did not learn anything new. The HS2 Ltd script was the same as ever – their scheme is wonderful, you have no real problems, you do not need a tunnel.

Lets hope the Select Committee put them right.

Sharing PavementsWendover News has been asked to pass on that unpowered scooters and skateboards may not be used on footpaths, pavements or cycle tracks, as they have no right-of way (source - The Independent, 12 Oct 2015). Cycles are only allowed on pavements where they are designated as shared use. Mobility scooters are only allowed on pavements if they travel at or below 4mph; otherwise they should use the road.

Although the above information is all correct, enforcement of a ban on scooters and skateboards on pavements is very difficult, and they are also not allowed to be used on roads, leaving little choice for their riders. Please share the pavement, and don’t ride if the pavement is crowded.

Every ticket bought helps someone in our local community, and provides essential funds for HLP’s partner hospices to ensure that they can continue to provide their services to the patients and families that benefit from them.

Wildlife Trust Appeal to Extend Nature ReserveThe Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust launched a new appeal in November to extend Yoesden nature reserve near Bledlow Ridge to give rare plants and butterflies more habitats. Christopher Williams, head of conservation & education for Buckinghamshire, is leading the appeal to raise £105,000 to buy three plots of land that adjoin the nature reserve.“If we’re successful we will increase the size of the reserve by about a third, helping to boost its biodiversity and encouraging the

wild flowers and butterflies to extend their ranges across the area of restored grassland.”

It’s a year since the Wildlife Trust bought Yoesden nature reserve, which is located in the Radnage valley. The south-west facing chalk bank is rated by Butterfly Conservation as one of the top sites in Berks, Bucks and Oxon for butterflies; and this summer volunteer surveyors recorded a very impressive 28 species of butterfly including healthy populations of small, chalkhill and Adonis blues.

The land that the Trust hopes to buy includes a chalk bank which is so steep that it’s never been cultivated; for this reason it has huge potential for wildlife. Below the chalk bank is a small wooded area of 1.5 acres that forms a natural extension to the woodland that the Trust already owns. It includes beech and ash trees for which this part of the Chilterns is renowned, and is dotted with holly and yew trees providing food and shelter for birds, hibernating butterflies and other insects.

The third area that the Trust hopes to buy is probably the most interesting because there are so few wild flowers there now. A three acre triangle of pasture criss-crossed with public footpaths has been grazed so hard that only a few chalk grassland plants and flowers have survived.

“This would be a perfect site for wild flower restoration through carefully harvesting grass and flower seeds from the land we already own and then broadcasting them into the prepared land,” said Christopher Williams.

Sheep and FencesWendover News has received an appeal for help from one of Wendover’s well-known residents, farmer Edward Mogford. If you can help with this, please contact [email protected] and we will pass on the message:

Someone has been deliberately cutting the sheep netting and barbed wire in more than one place. We’ve had this problem behind Castle Park and Moor Park along with dog attacks for some time now, but I’m determined to get on top of it rather than throw the towel in, as plenty of farmers have done.

As your readers will well know it’s hard enough to keep sheep in at the best of times, let alone when someone is cutting the fences. I would ask your readers for any information that would help me track the culprits.

Can I also urge dog walkers to please keep

their dogs under control and, when sheep are in the field, on a lead, as dog worrying and attacks are on the increase. This is especially important now as the sheep are heavily pregnant. Thanks, Edward Mogford.

Ellie BEx Wendover resident Nigel Crawley has just had his first novel, Ellie B, published. Nigel was born in Wendover in 1965 and lived here for 25 years before moving to Wing and eventually Perth, Western Australia where he currently resides. He has happy memories of playing pool with his mates in the Two Brewers in the High Street and drinking at The Red Lion. His parents still live in Wendover. Some of his early ideas for the book came from standing at the monument on Coombe Hill looking out over the Aylesbury Vale, which he still describes as stunning.

Ellie B has been many years in the making and has been the realisation of a life long ambition for Nigel. Set in the fictional village of St Peter’s Port in Cornwall it tells

The Trustees of The Wendover Swimming Pool are delighted that Wendover Parish Council has nominated the pool as this year’s charity at the Christmas Evening on Friday 4 December. We will be there on the night, so please visit us and let us know your thoughts on this valuable community asset. We are seeing increased numbers of swimmers at all times, whether mid-morning, evening lane swimming or weekend family splashes. Are you coming to any of these sessions? Is there anything else you would like to see at the pool? Several swim schools offer lessons for every age and ability, from babies to adults, as well as a swim club and fitness classes. Have you or your children signed on yet? We are always interested in hearing about your swimming experiences.

Over the past two years we have set up a charity to take over the management of the pool and we have shown that we can successfully run it for the community. This has only been possible with the significant help we have received from grants contributions (particularly the Lionel Abel Smith Trust), and the time given by our amazing team of volunteers. Without our volunteers, the pool would have shut. On that note: We need more volunteers. Our volunteers cover all sorts of areas – from tidying the pool area to front desk administration for our public swimming sessions. Many of these roles do not need detailed training, nor are they a fixed long-term commitment: even a couple of hours a month could make a tremendous difference. Come and chat to us at the Christmas Evening and find out how you can help keep this pool open for the community. Alternatively, contact us via our website www.wendoverswimmingpool.co.uk. From the author of Christmas Carols comes a new guide to English Church Music, O Sing Unto the Lord.

Andrew Gant’s compelling account traces English church music from Anglo-Saxon origins to the present. Along the way we encounter the people who made, sang and listened to it and discover the role

church music has played in ordinary lives.

We learn why church music remains so popular and frequently tops the classical charts - and why the BBC’s Choral Evensong remains the longest-running radio series ever. We follow its history from the mysteries of the Mass to the elegant decorum of the Restoration anthem, from stern Puritanism to Victorian bombast, to the fractured worlds of the 20th century as heard in the music of Vaughan Williams and Britten.

Out now in hardback, this is a fascinating read and makes a perfect present. Visit www.profilebooks.com for more information and follow them on Twitter @profilebooks

Macmillan Fundraising 2015I am delighted to report that this year’s fundraising has reached another record total of £7.341.00. Thank you so much to everyone who got involved and gave me such fantastic support this year. This money will help make a difference to many people and their families who are facing the toughest battle of their lives. Once again my very grateful thanks.

“Voice for Esmé” Concert ThanksThank you for the support that the local community showed Saturday 7 November for the “Voice for Esmé” concert at St Mary’s Church. Listeners enjoyed the acclaimed Weybridge Male voice choir and soloists performing an array of pieces which included remembrance pieces with Remembrance Sunday the following day. Colonel James Barnett from RAF Halton, accompanied by 2 other officers in full dress uniform, helped raise awareness of Esmé’s condition and raise funds for her future needs and training.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who this year has helped us to raise money and awareness for Rett syndrome and Esmé’s Allstars. We’d especially like to thank all the runners for One True Grit including The Wendover SparrowHawks, members of MS Centre, RAF Halton and locals. If you’ve been to one of our quiz nights, curry nights or cake competition, our Black Tie or Concert for Esmé or even run a Marathon (Anna B), we thank you all for your care and support. Next year we will be hosting even more events to raise vital funds and awareness for Girls with Rett Syndrome and Esmé. If you’d like to help us, then please get in touch on [email protected] or www.facebook.com/esmesallstars or Twitter @esmesallstars.

Ethical Produce?I bought a box of Medjoul dates from the Wendover market. They had a prominent label in Arabic: Jordan River. There was a tiny trade mark HADIKLAIM. No stated country of origin. On browsing the web, I found that this is a deliberate ploy by the Israeli exporters to conceal the origin of their produce. Some may be grown in Israel proper, but most is from the occupied West Bank, where the only employment available to many Palestinians is minimum-wage work for the illegal Israeli settlers in dangerous conditions. Children are routinely taken out of school, illegally, to pick the dates. The exporters mix a llittle Israeli produce with a lot from the illegal settlements and sneak it into our shops, even those which try to be ethically conscious.

Before anyone accuses me of anti-Semitism I would like to identify myself as an anti-Zionist Jew, one of many who believe that Israel will never stop grabbing Palestinian land and provoking violent resistence without external

pressure, including an economic boycott. There are differing opinions as to how far such a boycott should go: arms sales, West Bank produce, all Israeli produce, sporting links, cultural organisations that serve the settlers, all cultural and sporting links, educational exchanges? The road to peace is long and full of obstacles, but the first steps on it require Israel to recognise that it cannot ignore international law and continue pushing the Palestinians into ever smaller enclaves with impunity.

Editor’s note: Sinfield Fruiterers have been supplying quality fresh fruit & vegetables to the public of Wendover for over 20 years and are very concerned that they have been accused of allegedly selling illegally imported produce. All produce is checked by UK Border control whose duty it is to check all imports for legal infringements. The matter is undergoing further investigation.

As we hurtle towards the end of the year, all at Wendover Celebrates HQ are trying to get a few things tied up before we break for Christmas. We’ve achieved a lot since the new Directors joined at the end of the summer.

So far we’ve created a new website, www.wendovercelebrates.com and contact email address [email protected] – so now you know how to get in touch with us! Feel free to drop us a line with any ideas of what you think would make a good edition to the 2016 event or anything you loved from the last few that you’d really like to see again.

The event itself will be held on 1 May 2016 at the Wendover Campus site, which is the same location as in 2012.

The logo competition has been running to support the 2016 theme of Wild West and we’re really excited to see what our

local school children come up with and announcing the winner in January.

We’ve also been busy organising fundraisers in order to ensure we have enough money to put the event on next year. By the time you read this we will have just had the Wendover Celebrates Quiz at the Memorial Hall on 28 November and we hope to follow this up with a Barn Dance in March (more details to follow).

Finally, we’ve been very busy recruiting volunteers, thank you very much to those who have expressed an interest so far. We’re still very keen to hear from people who would like to get involved in the marketing committee and also the logistics committee (who are in charge of site management). Wendover Celebrates is entirely run by volunteers, so if you could spare any time to help please do get in touch at [email protected] or via the Facebook page - www.facebook.com/wendovercelebrates.

Should I, Could I...Learn to Play a Musical Instrument in My Senior Years?Ever heard a piece of music and thought…I’d love to be able to play that…I wonder if I could play that? Could be any genre - pop, jazz, classical - whatever you fancy. Well, maybe you could learn to play it and - for maintaining your mental health - perhaps it’s time you gave it a try. Whatever age you are.

For many decades there has been a focus on physical health and wellbeing but what about our mental wellbeing? It’s recently been discovered that the brain is more “plastic” (changeable) than was previously thought. The brain can still change and produce new connections or “synapses” if given the right kind of stimulus, even in later life. It’s all about giving your brain the right kind of exercise. Learning a musical instrument, in particular a string (violin, viola, cello) instrument, has been found to exercise both left and right sides of the brain simultaneously, and this means that learning a string instrument provides the unique ability to give your brain a good all-round workout whilst you’re having fun playing music that you love, so isn’t it worth a go? It takes some commitment to regular practice but it’s worthwhile, as many musicians will tell you.

Norman Weinberger, a neuroscientist at University of California Irvine who has done pioneering research on the auditory system and the brain, says that while it’s harder for the mature brain to learn an instrument, it’s not impossible, and it brings many advantages in later life. “A lot of people believe the brain isn’t very plastic after puberty. In fact, the brain maintains its ability to change,” Weinberger says. “Is it as easy to learn something when you’re 65 as it is at 5? No. But can it be done? Yes.”

Throughout your musical journey, having the right teacher to support and nurture your progress is vital, but there are advantages and compensations to being an older student. For example, adults find it easier to concentrate than children and often are able to commit themselves to longer, more focused practice, so if some of the physicality of learning an instrument is tough to master when you’re older, it’s the discipline and drive that adults have which keeps them achieving. Likewise adults tend to have goals and expectations and find it easier to master musical concepts.

I’ve been teaching children for over 10 years now and this continues to be a rewarding experience, but I’ve also been fortunate enough to teach adults in that time. When teaching adults, I’ve felt more relaxed and flexible as a teacher, adapting to the differing needs of my students and providing a range of challenges to suit their tastes. I’ve learnt to be more flexible about the kind of music I use, often making my own arrangements. I’ve taught Frank Sinatra standards as happily as Handel or Bach.

I’m looking forward to teaching older adults with the introduction of my “over 50’s senior strings club” (email [email protected]), a daytime group run weekly during term time for those who would like to learn violin (later possibly group viola and group cello classes). Lessons will take place in a relaxed environment offering free tea/coffee and cake! One of my goals for the class is that students will, one day, not only play the music they’ve been enjoying listening to, but also meet and play alongside other string players in a local senior strings club orchestra. Interested? Look out for posters at local venues or contact me by email.

A Merry-kick-mas from all at Wendover FC!What a seat clutching few months it has been for the club! The newly promoted 1st Team are top of the ADL Premier Division for the first time in many years and the Reserves team who too were promoted this season are going from strength to strength with only one loss seen in their first 7 games in Division Two.

Leading up to the festive period we have some challenging yet exciting matches to be played which will heavily influence the position of both teams for the rest of the season. With a home match every week leading up to Christmas we encourage new and current supporters to come down and cheer on our boys in black and gold. Each game kicks off at 14:00 and the clubhouse is fully stocked to keep you both warm and refreshed during and after the match.

The club is not just all about the match, it is also about us building a strong task force in a new committee to help the club, and

the Wendover Juniors family, to grow into a new era focusing on our professionalism and stability and most importantly our community. With the financial backing of our sponsor Sweeney’s Budgens, we have been able to start making plans for the refurbishment of our clubhouse to include the changing room facilities.

It has been a truly great 2015 and we await the new year with anticipation of league success, club growth and some top secret events. Thank you to all the Wendover FC players, committee members and fans for their support which if we didn’t have we believe we would not be anywhere near as excited for 2016.

We would like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and fantastic New Year from all at Wendover FC.

News from Wendover FoGAt the recent Wendover Friends of Guiding meeting, we agreed to take a step forward in the process to get us a new Guide Hut. Whilst

this is a long way off and we have a very long way to go to raise the monies we need, the first step is for to have a think about what we actually want. The unit leaders have been surveyed and a preliminary visit to a local outbuilding supplier took place in November.

£239.24 was raised at the BBQ in September - a small step, but a step forward. Thanks to all who attended this very successful event!

Aston Wine ClubInterested in wine and want to know a little more? Taste wines from every corner of the world. Come and enjoy an evening of relaxed fun and tasting. We meet monthly, usually on the third Friday, at Buckland Village Hall, HP22 5JB. Check our web site www.astonwineclub.co.uk for more details.

Cricket Club UpdateWendover Cricket Club enjoyed another successful 50/50 Auction on 14 November and they wish to thank all those who provided goods to sell and who attended on

the day, or provided other support. As ever, there was a wide range of prices and the top price paid was £190 for a small chest of drawers, whilst £65 was realised for 5 folders of Royal Mail postcards.

Whitchurch Morris Men – Exhausted!Friday evening’s arrival dinner was finally ready for 9 p.m. and we all ate too much and true to the forecast the weather had turned. 48 men and musicians set out by bus and our first venue on Saturday, Wendover Manor Waste, was dry and attracted a good crowd.

On to the Bell at Hardwick, which offered shelter from the inimitable rain. The White Swan at Whitchurch provided a warming chilli lunch with space to dance it off under the gazebo in the garden. This led to a first in Aylesbury. The 2:30 venue was Friars Square by kind permission of the Centre Manager. No sooner had we arrived at the Market Square entrance then we were dragged into Metro Bank and asked to perform. Two sides formed up and danced The Rose Tree inside

the Bank. That was fun. So, on to the first ever procession in Aylesbury; led by the musicians and the Squire of the Morris Ring, we formed 2 columns, danced the Winster Precessional up the ramp to the area outside New Look and Top Shop. It was nice to be in the warm and dry with an appreciative audience - many of which joined in the dancing.

After a quick coffee stop, we danced outside BB’s cafe before returning to the bus and continue the Tour. Wingrave found us in the Rose and Crown where the Leicester Men danced inside and though a dad and daughter refused to join in, they were soon dancing. The final stop was our home base of the Half Moon at Wilstone and the Feast in the village hall. My knees and legs ached after all of that.

Friars Square was a big success for us and we potentially have a new man out of it. The Squire was most impressed too, so thank you once again to the Centre Manager. If you want to join in with the fun, our practice nights are on Tuesdays at 8:15pm in Wilstone

Village Hall, so all you men and boys have to do is come along and join us. You can also contact us through our web address:- www.whitchurchmorris.org.uk.

More Link Trainers ArriveTwo more flight simulators, known as Link Trainers, have been brought from the Netherlands to the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre (JMFHC), at RAF Halton. Most significantly, the D2 (ANT 18) which was actually used by RAF pilots during World War 2.

The Link trainers came into widespread use during World War II when over 10,000 “blue box” trainers were used to improve safety and shorten training time for over 500,000 pilots. The trainers were used as a step preceding actual flight training and as an opportunity for experienced pilots to sharpen their skills.

The two trainers were brought to RAF Halton via Immingham by members of 2 Military Transport Section based at RAF Wittering near Peterborough. All of the airmen who made the journey recently graduated from Recruit Training Squadron at Halton.

Bats and Owls at RAF HaltonHere at RAF Halton not only do we have the barn owl that lives and hunts around the airfield but also the tawny owl that can be heard in most of our woodland, but especially around Halton House.

The tawny owl is a medium sized bird of prey found mainly throughout European woodlands and in some other parts of the world. It is one of the most widespread owls throughout Europe and is most certainly the most common bird of prey found in the England, Scotland and Wales.

RAF Halton is recorded as having one of the biggest bat roosts in Europe with over 90% of our buildings being occupied, especially Halton House, and they do on occasions cause a few problems with building works, repairs and renovations. All bats are protected by law and if disturbed or handled (even when dead) can lead to a criminal conviction leading to imprisonment or a very hefty fine; and although a military establishment, we are not exempt from prosecution!

Party time? No, project time! There are some great projects on at WYC!

One group of young people hopes to develop a fruity social enterprise and product that has both a positive impact on the environment and on the community. With great support from our local supermarket, Budgens, who are donating the fruit that they can no longer sell, we hope to make tasty and nutricious dried fruity bits/jerky. If successful, we will work with Budgens, the Youth Centre and the Youth Forum to make the fruity bits and sell them back to the community via the Centre, the local schools and (if we can meet the standard required) back into Budgens. However, we cannot do it without you.

We need £1,000 to buy a dehydrator and packaging materials to get our project to market. This is a great opportunity for us to learn how to run our own business and in the process to make a difference to the health of the local community. We have some great rewards for pledges and any over-funding

(along with any profits made from fruity sales) will be donated to the Wendover Youth Centre charity, which has been nurturing the young people of Wendover for 30 years. Check out our video on how to get involved: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/fruity-call.

As part of Wendover Remembers, marking 100 years since the end of the 1st World War, our Youth Café group are working on some short films with Jane Larkham and Ellice Evans from Wendover News, who have been joining us on Wednesdays. The aim is to take an activity that interests them now and compare it to what it was like 100 years ago. The young people are filming and will edit their short films, which we aim to showcase in the new year. This project is enabling our young people to discover their creative talents and to work with some professional people in the process. It is also an incredible opportunity to connect with local history.

There is still time to get involved in both projects, so if you are 11-18 and interested please email [email protected].

On 12 October 2015, Wendover lost one of its most caring and charismatic residents Thomas Ronald Welch, Ron to everyone who knew him. He was born in Lincolnshire in 1928 and settled in Wendover with his family in 1970.

Young enough to miss fighting in World War 2, he was determined to forge a successful life and career, though circumstances made his academic path difficult. However his determination and strength of character won through and after studying at night school he qualified as a Chartered Chemist in 1952. He worked in Road Research from 1946 and developed a new surface first used on a street in Lydney, Gloucestershire. He was admired for his conscientiousness, thoroughness and determination. He always succeeded in achieving anything he set out to do. He joined BP in 1956 and stayed for 31 years, retiring in 1987 after an extremely successful career.

He met Marian in 1949 at a dance and they bonded over their shared love of music. They married in 1953. Sons Colin and Peter arrived a few years later. Marian passed away in 2008.

Recently I read through his recipes for all manner of fruit wines from the 1950s to the

80s. The elderberry was the best and I recall a potent tasty drink of about 15% alcohol. I have fond memories of picking the berries around Wendover in my schooldays in the 70s – it was an excellent use of this free fruit that usually goes to waste. His orange wine went into his famous punch, which made for much merriment at many summer parties held from the 70s to the 90s at Garden House in Wendover. I hope some readers will recall these times.

He played football in his 20s and headed the winning goal in a local cup final for Uxbridge. He became a keen tennis player and joined Wendover Tennis Club in 1970. In 1981 he was inspired by the ‘running boom’ and at the age of 53 did Abingdon marathon in a time of 3h54. He got down to 33m30 at the Hillingdon 5mile and 16m10s at Gunnersbury 2.5m, plus a 1h33 Reading half-marathon. Extraordinary

performances I can’t get close to now I am a similar age. I enjoyed many wonderful weekends going to races with Dad in the 1980s.

He had a deep interest in a music (favourites were Bruckner and

Wagner) and poetry (Emily Dickinson and Thomas Traherne).

Since he retired in 1987, he entered a remarkable and wonderful phase of life in which he completely changed focus from his corporate career to helping people in pain. He studied hard and qualified in Alexander Technique, Cranial Sacral Therapy and Vortex Healing and built up a detailed knowledge of human anatomy. He explored the human energy system and became a powerful and much sought-after healer.

He developed an integrated, eclectic healing approach that focussed on his clients’ well-being, adapting techniques to find what worked best. He helped many people recover from serious injury. One long-standing client

told me only Ron could relieve his shoulder pain; no other conventional or alternative methods worked.

In parallel to his new healing vocation, a spiritual quest and in particular heart energy became central to his life. From 1998 he was drawn to the Heart Healing run by Jill and Joe O’Carroll from Vancouver, Canada. He came to radiate a cheerful love and kindness which was very striking to people he met in the village and elsewhere. I am sure all those who remember him will do so with great fondness.

Amanda has lived in Wendover for virtually all of her life – she was born in Aylesbury and lived in Wendover throughout her childhood where she attended each of the Wendover schools.

Little did she know that at the age of 15, Amanda would meet her future husband, Matt! Despite Matt moving away to Devon, their relationship continued until Matt eventually moved back to Wendover and they married in 1997. They moved to Aylesbury for a few years when they both worked at Trusthouse Forte and in 1999 their first child Sam was born. Not long after, they returned to Wendover and Sam was soon followed by Rebecca, Charlie and Joseph. Family plays a huge part in Amanda’s life. She has happy memories of Sunday lunches with her Grandparents, who also lived in Wendover. Today this continues as her parents, Neville and Rosemary Morton, and sisters, Julia and Claire, meet regularly, giving the children a chance to spend time with their cousins.

Aside from her duties as a mother of four, Amanda juggles the busy life of family and friends and is an active member of St Mary’s church where she also finds time to sing in the St Mary’s music group.

Amanda’s day job is as the Church Administrator of St Mary’s and she can be found in her office at the back of the newly refurbished Just on the High Street. The role of the church office is to manage the administration of St Mary’s Church

here in Wendover and St Michael’s Church in Halton. In light of the variety of activities that take place in and around St Mary’s this is a significant role.

Amanda Ryan is the face behind the emails and the phone calls who enables all these activities, from baptisms to burials, and from concerts to classes, to run smoothly. Her friendly and efficient approach enables the ministry and outreach of St Mary’s to function well. Amanda is ably supported by a team of volunteers who work alongside her, but as the main lead in parish administration Amanda holds the reins. As Mark Dearnley (Vicar of St Mary’s) told us, “Having a well-run parish office is such

an asset. It frees me, and the members of our ministry team, to tend to other aspects of the life of our church family. Amanda and those who assist her do an important job in our community, for which I’m very grateful.”

View from the ChairAs we enter the season of goodwill to all men (and women), it’s very sad to note the devastation caused to the Florence Nightingale Charity shop by some lowlife who were intent on thieving cash from the ATM. They must be very stupid people if they believe they can get their mitts on other people’s property and get away with it in this day of Internet banking and CCTV. I really hope that in a few weeks time when the Constabulary have done their work they will be brought to justice and made to face the people whose property they have damaged.

It is also sad to note that in the last few weeks there has been an incident at St. Mary’s Church. The ‘key safe’ has been wrenched off the wall and stolen.

Because of this the Church will be locked during the day while the security system is reviewed.

The HS2 Select Committee are still hearing petitions from Wendover folk. A really huge thank you on behalf of the community to all who have presented to the Select Committee. Aside from the hard work in preparation there is also the mental anguish in presenting to such an organisation. For most it’s the first time they will have had to present their views in such a way. In my mind it has certainly raised the issue of whether we do live in a democracy and whether the people’s views really do count. We now move forward to petitioning on Additional

provisions as and when they arise (but note the short timescales) and then trying to get the House of Lords to hear our cases.

It just remains for me to wish everyone in Wendover a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and to say thank you for all your support in 2015.

Robert Duggan, Chairman.

Manor Waste Christmas TreeThis is a picture of the Manor Waste Christmas Tree for this year. It is being donated to the Parish by the Harpenden Building Society who generously donate the tree every year. Melanie Masson, X Factor finalist and Queen Rat from Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s pantomime Dick Whittington, will be here to switch on the Christmas Lights on Friday 4th December. The little Christmas trees outside the shops in the High Street have been dressed with the new energy

saving LED lights and will, hopefully, look even better than usual.

The Question of GrantsIn the near future the Parish Council will be taking over a range of services from Transport for Bucks. Grass verge cutting, sign cleaning, footpath edging and some enforcement tasks, will become the responsibility of the Parish.

This change will be costly and as a result the PC is reviewing its expenditure priorities. One area of spending that has grown over the last few years has been grant funding to locally based organisations. The awarding of grants has gone from a few hundred pounds

each year to thousands. That poses the question does the Wendover electorate support the PC being a grant giving organisation?

It is essential that we have your views on this matter and during the next few months we shall be asking for your opinion. Please show your support for the Parish Council by helping to answer this most important question.

Clock Tower Opening HoursThe Clock Tower will be open as normal during the Festive

Season apart from Christmas Day, the Bank Holiday on Monday 28th December, New Year’s Day and an early close on New Year’s Eve.
