Remembering2014 has been the start of the Big Remember as the centenary of events leading up to the start of World War One rolled out and then, on 4 August, the day itself arrived.

Since the September edition, Wendover News has carried an article entitled Wendover Remembers, which relates events which happened locally a century ago. Readers are invited to contribute any local history they know to add to our communal bank of knowledge.

Meanwhile, Wendover is also starting to participate in a Buckinghamshire Heritage Trail. This involves any photograph you may possess taken locally during World War One. The idea is to take a contemporary photo of the same scene for comparison. If you can contribute a photo or can take part in any other way, please contact Wendover News.

As always, the Remembrance Parade will take place on the Manor Waste in Wendover at 2.30pm on Remembrance Sunday, 9 November 2014. It is always organised by the Royal British Legion and supported by military organisations, Local Government Councillors, the local uniformed youth organisations, churches and other organisations and many spectators. All very welcome.

NOVEMBER 1914

In mid-November 1914, the great German attack on Ypres, carried out by the Prussian Guard, failed. Trench warfare was established all along the Western Front from Dunkirk in the North to the Swiss Alps. The war started to spread to other parts of the world. Turkey joined forces with Germany and Austria and consequently Great Britain, France and Russia declared war on Turkey. The conflict spread to East Africa, the Far East and Mesopotamia. Sea battles took place off the coast of Chile, in the Black Sea and the Red Sea. British airmen bombed a Zeppelin factory at Friedrichshafen.

Nearer to home, in Wendover, there was great excitement when rumours were confirmed of two important visitors to Halton Camp.

Lord Kitchener, the Secretary for War, inspected the Halton troops at the end of October. The Bucks Herald reported: “Lord Kitchener lunched with Mr Alfred de Rothschild at the mansion, who, as usual was spending the week-end at his country seat.” The inspection of the troops in the afternoon was hampered by continuous rain but Lord Kitchener seemed satisfied with all he saw. He did not address the men but had a “round table” chat with the chief officers, when many matters of importance were discussed. He was overheard to say “These men would look better in khaki”. Lord Kitchener left the camp at 4pm to be driven back to London. Mr de Rothschild returned to town by the 4.10 train from Wendover.

Crowds gathered to greet the King when he visited Halton on 18 November. The King took a great interest in the training and in

the course of the Royal inspection, three Army biplanes flew over the camp.

Because of the very wet November and heavy Army traffic the roads throughout Wendover were in a dreadful condition. The Parish Council Minute Book recorded a letter, dated 15 November 1914 sent on behalf of the Commanding Officer of Halton Camp: “Sir, I have arranged that the Troops under my Command, shall assist in keeping clean the roads in Wendover, Aston Clinton, Stoke Mandeville and Weston Turville, and parties will be so employed from 7.15am to 8am every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during their stay in billets. If these villages be not all under the same Council, will you be good enough to pass this letter to any others concerned.”

The Buckinghamshire Advertiser & Aylesbury News 28 November recorded the effort made by the people of Wendover to assist the soldiers at Halton: “There are many agencies at work endeavouring to keep in touch with the soldiers and provide for their enjoyment, pleasure and comfort. In Mr How’s meadow there is a fair and cinema and near Clay Lane a Theatre has been installed and one of these has been in Norgate’s Meadow for some time. Mr F Caudrey has recently emptied his large store shed in Aylesbury Road, and has made it warm and comfortable and concerts are arranged”.

The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) has launched an appeal to save Yoesden, a precious wildlife site in the Chilterns, which is renowned for its variety of wild flowers, butterflies and moths on a chalk grassland bank.

Above this the ‘hanger’ woodland of beech, yew and whitebeam trees clothes the steep hillside that overlooks Radnage Valley. The Wildlife Trust has just a few weeks to raise £150,000 by 7 November and save Yoesden.

Estelle Bailey, chief executive of BBOWT, is leading the appeal. “Yoesden is a wonderful jewel in the Chilterns, full of colourful flowers and butterflies. When I visited the site in the summer I was delighted to see so many varieties of butterflies fluttering up from the pink and purple flowers of wild thyme and marjoram. “The sounds of crickets and grasshoppers and the scent of wild herbs were amazing, and the views from the top of the bank looking across

Radnage Valley are stunning. BBOWT has the opportunity now to protect this precious site for everyone to enjoy, and to look after it so that more wildlife can thrive here.”

Estelle Bailey added: “If our appeal is successful we plan to continue the careful management of Yoesden, which the current owners have done for the last 20 years, and to encourage more local people to get involved with conservation.”

There will be guided walks, workshops and events, work parties to help control the scrub, and detailed surveying of the grassland so that it is kept in the best condition for flowers and herbs that provide essential food and shelter for butterflies and other insects. HS2 continues to rumble on despite the fact that the work of collecting the evidence to help petitioners appearing before the HS2 select committee is still ongoing. We still need volunteers with knowledge or experience on the various aspects of building and operating a High Speed train.

The Petitioning Organisations Partnership (POP) are continuing to work towards gathering the required evidence. To that end experts will be commissioned to help us make the best case possible. However, if you are an acoustician, a hydrologist, a traffic planner, an estimator or a construction project manager who knows their way around Construction Codes of Practice and would like to help please contact us.

Help is at hand for all those who have petitioned and need assistance in collecting evidence to support their case. The relevant evidence that is collected by the POP will be made available to local petitioners. To make it accessible, it will be held by the Parish Council.

As you may have read, the select committee are hearing petitions starting in Birmingham and coming south. One bright spot in the process which underlines why we all need to keep going is the example of Lichfield. They had a viaduct going past them, which among other things spoilt the view of that historic town. The select committee agreed it should go in an “undercut” (not officially a tunnel) so it was not visible, so we should all take heart and keep working for the best mitigation for Wendover and district.

Carla’s Wig WeekA huge thank you from Carla and the Scruples team. With the help and support of our customers, friends, family and Wendover businesses our Fabulous Fun Week in late September and early October raised a grand total of £2307. This has enabled Carla to buy her wonderful real hair wig and head wear. It will also help towards the cost of her special macrobiotic diet.

Mending the towpathOn Wednesday 24 September, the Canal and River Trust started work on rebuilding the towpath from the start of the Wendover Arm, near Bankside. The method they used involves driving two rows of wooden stakes

along what will be the new edge. A bundle of coir, gripped by hessian netting, is placed between the stakes. Biodegradable nylon ties connect the bundles. the space between the eroding bank and the new edge will be filled with stone. Plant seeds will germinate in the coir and make the edge strong.

The water level has dropped from 180 on Tuesday 22 July this year to 140 on Thursday 25 September. It is still high because of the vegetation growth further down the Arm encouraged by warm weather in Spring. A contractor will remove this later in the Autumn and the water level will drop.

The Issue of SpeedingThe Community Safety Partnership plan has a number of priorities to address Crime and Disorder within the Vale. The Town and Rural Neighbourhood Police Teams, (your local officers and PCSOs) focus on these priorities.

One of the priorities in the plan is working with communities to address the issues of speeding. Speeding is an issue that local

communities can take ownership of by creating local Community SpeedWatch Schemes. Other data can be supplied by areas that have MVAS speed signs that allow you to monitor an area of concern and gather data. This data can then be supplied to your local Neighbourhood Police Teams, who analyse the data and where necessary can then conduct Speed Enforcement activities.

HRH the Countess of Wessex unveils new names in SM Hall of FameHer Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex has today (Wednesday 8 October 2014) unveiled David Weir CBE, Margaret Maughan, Eva Loeffler OBE, and The Hon. Mark Vestey to the Stoke Mandeville Hall of Fame. The four legends have a deep connection with Stoke Mandeville Stadium, WheelPower and the Paralympic movement and are acclaimed for their extraordinary contribution to British wheelchair sport. Six time Paralympic gold medal winner David Weir said: “It’s a great honour to be here and be named with great athletes and Sir Ludwig Guttmann himself.”

Community OrchardThe Parish Council propose to plant a Community Orchard in Rope Walk Meadow, which is already planted with wild flowers. The Orchard will consist of sixty heritage fruit trees, one for each name on the War Memorial from the Great War and two names which can be found in the register

held at St. Mary’s church, of people who were not Wendover residents at the time.

The trees will be apple, pear, gage and cherry plus two each of mulberry, quince and medlar. They are all trees that used to grow in the Vale but are now rarely found. Details of the named varieties of the trees are held in the Clerk’s office in the Clock Tower.

It is hoped that members of the Community, or organisations, will ‘adopt a tree’ and volunteers will form a Management Committee which will, together with the Parish Council, manage the Orchard. Planting is expected to start early in the spring.

Wendover Arm Trust – Grand DrawThe Trust would like to thank the Wendover residents for their support again this year for the Grand Draw. A sum in excess of £4000 was raised for the restoration fund. The prize winners have all been notified and the prizes distributed. There were many local winners and the detailed list can be viewed on the Trust’s web site – www.wendoverarmtrust.co.uk .

The winning tickets were drawn on Sunday 7 September in the churchyard at St Mary the Virgin, Drayton Beauchamp, nr Tring. Mr James Griffin of Wyvern Shipping Co Ltd. Leighton Buzzard drew the tickets from a very full tombola drum. The Deputy Mayor of Tring, Mrs Roxanne Ransley, attended, and spoke at length in support of the Trust and the restoration of the Wendover Arm Canal.

The Draw formed part of an Open Day held to welcome several hundred members of the public, with a tour of the work site at Bridge

4A on the canal. Mr Roger Leishman, the Trust’s Restoration Director, spoke to groups of visitors from bridge 4A to explain how the work is being carried out.

The restoration work continues with monthly working parties. For those interested in joining the restoration working parties, details are given on the Trust’s web site.

Community Information OfficeThe Parish Council has realised there is a lot of similarity between the services provided by the Clock Tower Community Information Office and other places in the High Street. Now would seem to be an appropriate time to consider the future of the CIO and look seriously at relocation and integration with another organisation. For the moment the CIO is closed but we hope the service will be continued in the near future.

Who’s Doing the Dishes?This is a new daytime show that’s a cross between “Come Dine with Me” and “Through the Keyhole” that sees ex-Westlife member Brian McFadden escorting four blindfolded civilians (us!) to a celebrity’s home. While we had a nosey round the house for clues, the celebrity in question prepared dinner, embedding cryptic hints to their identity in the names of each course – literally, a signature dish. If we managed to correctly identify the host we won some cash and the celebrity had to do the washing up. If we got it wrong we had to do the scrubbing!

The filming days were really long affairs from literally 12noon to 12pm or 1am in the morning the next day. The best bit was getting to meet some great celebrities such as Wayne Sleep, Caprice (super model) and Anthony Worral-Thompson in the very personal surroundings of their own home. We had plenty of time to talk with them informally off-camera afterwards, too.

SchoolsNew Bank branch in SchoolHarpenden Building Society is opening another school bank, this time in Halton Community Combined School. An assembly was recently held at the school, introducing the Building Society to the pupils explaining how the savings process works. This is the fifth school bank now in operation, through the Harpenden Building Society, the others being at Wendover CofE Junior School, Aston Clinton Combined School and elsewhere. Pupils can bring in penny amounts on a weekly or less regular basis and watch how their balances grow in their accounts. This is a very effective way for parents to help young children develop the habit of saving in advance for an item rather than always relying on credit.

We will pay you a minimum of £550 per week, plus up to £50 for your travel costs as well as 3% towards a pension. All your food and board will be provided for. Why do we need a Foodbank?13 million people currently live below the poverty line in the UK. For some it is normal to go without food, for others it may be a temporary problem caused by issues such as illness, redundancy or debt. In 2013 - 14 Foodbanks fed 913,138 people nationwide, of which 330,205 were children. The Trussell Trust set up its Foodbanks based firmly in the belief that local communities are best placed to meet local needs.

How does our Foodbank work?Non perishable, in-date food is donated by members of our community through local churches and the collection point after the tills at Budgens, Wendover. All donations are taken to the Chiltern Foodbank main office in Chesham where volunteers sort and pack it into boxes ready to be given to local people in need. Our local professionals such as doctors, social workers and teachers identify people within our community in crisis and issue them with a Foodbank voucher. These vouchers can be redeemed at the

Foodbank, where those in need are given a warm welcome, a listening ear, guidance to other agencies providing help in dealing with longer-term problems and of course the much needed three days of emergency food.

Donating food and/or hygiene products gives you the confidence that 100 per cent of the money you spend goes straight to the people that you want to help.

What else could you do?The charity website (chiltern.foodbank.org.uk) has all the information you need to determine what else you could do to contribute, for example could you become a volunteer yourself? Could you/your organisation become a referral partner? Could you make a gift aid donation?

(The website also has an up to date list of the current, most needed items - at time of writing this includes fruit juice, sponge puddings, sugar and tinned potatoes).

Retiring as a GP, I consider myself very lucky to have been able to do a job that I have absolutely loved for so long. I was also extraordinarily fortunate to join the Wendover GP partnership all those years ago. In the advertisement, Wendover was described as “ a small picturesque village on the edge of the Chilterns”. Little did I know how much I would grow to love Wendover and the people who live here.

During my time at Wendover, there have been many changes. When I started in practice in 1980, I joined Drs Riley, Garrod and Leeper and I remember the whole of the back of my car being full of equipment and medication. Those were the days when we were on call at night and weekends and looked after patients with heart attacks and strokes at home. We went in to Aylesbury to supervise babies being delivered at the Royal Bucks Hospital and many of our patients had hospital treatment at Princess Mary’s

Hospital, Halton. However, those were not necessarily the good old days. It’s tempting to think fondly of those times and be nostalgic for the personal care available round the clock, but our health care has become a lot more complicated now with its strong emphasis on prevention. The days of young people dying of asthma are almost unheard of now.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have looked after a number of people from Wendover over the years and I have been impressed, and often inspired, by the bravery and stoicism of many patients when facing serious disease or the end of their life. Families and friends have dedicated themselves to looking after their loved ones and on many occasions the Wendover community has given much needed help. The Wendover Community Car has either provided essential transport or the Friends of Wendover Health Centre have collected that vital prescription.

Very often when a vulnerable person is in trouble, a neighbour will offer to help. That says a lot about the Wendover community.

I will miss the practice and patients very much, but will continue to be involved as a volunteer with a new scheme for

elderly, vulnerable patients called the Weston project. The aim of the project is to help older frail patients to live well and happily independent in their own homes. Our funding bid has been successful, three senior nurses have been appointed and we hope the service will be up and running before the end of the year.

Many people know that the Canal and River Trust, together with an army of different volunteers, is improving the path around Weston Turville reservoir. As walking is one of the best forms of exercise for your health, I have been involved in a plan to promote this as a Health Walk. The improved path around the reservoir should provide better access and allow everyone to experience that beautiful nature reserve.

Big Thanks from Wendover ScoutsYou may not realise but scouting in Wendover is funded from membership subscription and grant aid. Over the past 18 months the Group has secured several grants which have allowed us to improve and develop different areas.

New projector - The old projector was about 6 years old. We had already replaced the screen and put in speakers for sound. The equipment is a valuable training aid to all the sections of the group. We applied for two grants. The first was from from The Leslie Sell Charitable Trust. The trust was set up by Mr Leslie B Sell, who was a Scout all his life, from the age of 10 until he died in 1987, aged 87. He set up the fund to help both Scouts and Guides financially and purchased a number of campsites in Bedfordshire. He was also a personal friend of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. The second was from Bucks Community Foundation. Since it started back in the year 2000, hundreds of donors have provided grants and loans totalling £5 million to 1,600 community groups in all parts of the county. In one way or another, everyone in the county has been touched by the work of these groups and the Foundation’s support for them.

We applied to Wendover Community Trust who kindly agreed to support the purchasing of 4 new tents, which got a true test of the British weather this year with the Cubs, when rain, wind, a mini tornado and sunshine hit.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers AssociationOctober was a busy month for Honey Shows. Congratulations to all our members who entered the County Honey Show. Out of 19 Classes we won 5 and were placed in a further 10 Classes. The speaker at our meeting on 19 November will be Peter Dalby and the topic of his talk will be “Travels of a Beekeeper”. Sadly there will not be a Winter Charity Market this year, but we hope to

Wendover Tennis and Squash ClubIn preparation for the winter season all our courts have been pressure cleaned to help maintain a non-slippery surface throughout the damp weather. The Racketball and Pilates course has proved successful on Monday mornings and will continue for the rest of the year. A coach will now be joining our Monday evening Ladies tennis session; she will be focusing on a different aspect of tennis each week and supporting players of all standards. Am I the only one?I would love to know whether other Wendover residents have noticed the total absence of any speed limit signs on the Tring Road going towards Tring? Coming in the other direction there are plenty, helping us to reduce from 50 to 40 to 30 at Halton Camp. However, on leaving Wendover and heading up the hill towards the camp there is not a single sign until you are past the camp where there is a 40 sign.

I have been caught twice in the past year going past the camp at 34/35 mph and now have 3 points on my licence. Yes, it’s my own fault but if there was at least one sign I am sure it would not have happened.

The great flashing SLOW DOWN sign on South Street is very effective. Couldn’t we have one of those near the Vets at Wendover Heights or is the income from the many fines too important to the powers that be? By the way, I have never got a speeding fine anywhere else in the country!!

Wendover Arm Trust Grand DrawThe Wendover Arm Trust has recently held their Grand Draw for 2014. A record number of tickets were sold, largely owing to the efforts of Michael Wright, a stalwart member, who has taken over responsibility since 2013. All profit will go towards restoration costs for which nearly £400K is needed to complete Phase 11. The Restoration Open Day held in September was also a great success with very large numbers viewing the site and gaining knowledge of the overall project. A further length of canal is virtually complete and should be ready for re-watering - hopefully before Spring 2015 depending on water availability from the reservoirs.

Budgens and the Wendover Youth Forum donate thousands for Young Enterprise CompetitionWendover Youth Centre has received £4,000 to run the competition which Becky, the Centre’s Youth Leader, has described as “a cross between Dragon’s Den and The Apprentice”.

“We are thrilled,” continued Becky, “and so grateful to Budgens and the Wendover Youth Forum for sponsoring this project.”

The Young Enterprise Competition will see two teams of young people pitting, fundraising, wits, learning about entrepreneurialism from local business leaders and building their own enterprises over a twelve month period.

Each team will be given up to a maximum budget of £2,000 and will endeavour to turn it into £4,000 (or more) by Christmas

2015. The winning team will be given half of their total profit to run an event, treat or excursion for themselves and, if they’re feeling charitable, their opposition.

Apart from the prize money, all proceeds will go towards Wendover Youth Centre which has been caring for the young people of Wendover for over thirty years.

Dary Sweeney, proprietor of Wendover Budgens and pictured below giving Becky a

cheque for £2,000, said of the competition “We, at Budgens, are committed to supporting the local community and there is no worthier local cause than the Youth Centre.

I hope that this is more than just a competition for the young people who take part, I hope that the training they receive and the business stories they hear (I will be presenting one of these sessions) will stay with them beyond next Christmas, I hope they will want to put this on their CV’s and perhaps they will be inspired to run their own businesses when they leave school.”

Aidan Flying HighAidan Swindlehurst, aged 32, from Wendover, has just completed ten weeks of Basic Recruit Training at Recruit Training Squadron at RAF Halton. He will now go on to the Defence College at Chicksands to train as an Intelligence Analyst. He was born locally and his parents, Peter and Penny Swindlehurst, still live in Wendover.

Thirty six Recruits graduated from Recruit Training Squadron and the awards were presented by Reviewing Officer Air Commodore Martin (Sammy) Sampson, Joint Force Air Component Commander from Air Command.

Aidan said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at RAF Halton, I have learned so much and made many new friends. The highlight of the 10 weeks training was the Initial Force Protection Training and winning the Halton Aircraft Apprentice Trophy, awarded to the Recruit who shows the most effort and

determination in the physical training part of the course. I have been motivated and encouraged by my like minded colleagues and supportive Flight staff.“

Officer Commanding Recruit Training Squadron, said: “Today is a proud day for Aidan, as well as his family; achieving success in Basic Training requires mental, physical and emotional strength, because the course is far from easy, and a great sense of achievement is felt by all, including the instructors who help them towards their objective of graduating. He is more than ready to start the next phase of his career, and build on what he has achieved already. The Operational Environment poses significant challenges, and training our people optimally prepares them for these challenges.”

Aidan worked for Lumess as an e-learning developer and went to St Mary’s College in Sheffield prior to joining the Royal Air Force at the London Armed Forces Careers Office.

Local Aylesbury couple Chris and Carmel Williams, with their three children, moved to the Chandos Arms in January 2014 and all the family have really enjoyed the experience. They have been welcomed into village life and done their bit to help organisations too, including a fund raising event for the pre-school where the youngest child was a pupil at the time. U3A are regulars. The glorious summer was an ideal time for the family to get to know the increasing number of families who love to eat and relax at the Chandos Arms. Chris and Carmel both had very stressful jobs before deciding to take on a pub. Carmel was a social worker in Aylesbury and Chris worked in logistics in Milton Keynes. Their long hours took them away from their growing family so they decided that living on the job would give them all more time together. Chris and Carmel are very grateful to their supportive team of co-workers who have allowed this dream to come true.

The dream has only been achieved through meticulous planning which started 6 months before they moved in. The Chandos Arms is a Charles Wells brewery pub, established in 1842, which allows its landlords the freedom to develop their pub appropriately. While the brewery were refurbishing, the

premises, the Williams’ were fine tuning all their strategies including locally sourced meat, fish (Risborough Fish) and vegetables (World’s End Garden Centre). Once they arrived they started recruiting locals to work and making sure that all staff were undergoing suitable training, for example the chef, Holly, already has NVQ level 2 and is working towards level 3 and shift manager Stewie is very experienced but is working towards NVQ level 2.

All this careful preparation reaped success in the autumn. The first accolade won by the couple was Best Newcomer in London and the South East Region in the Great British Pub Awards earlier this year and they are finalists in the Best Newcomers section for Charles Wells Brewery (results due in late October) and in the Best Community Pub in the Aylesbury Pub Guide awards (results due in November).

Carmel and Chris both help out in the kitchen and Carmel designs the food. The food descriptions are seasonal and very entertaining. The ideas come from strong research and are helped by Carmel’s Jamaican heritage. This has led to some much appreciated Caribbean themed nights with authentic food, of course. The mutton for the goat curry (a good West Indian tradition) is, sourced from Kings Farm Shop, their regular supplier.

Locals have enjoyed the man vs Chandos Food challenges where only two people so far have managed the 48oz steak! Monday nights are famous for the Chandos Quiz, a long established tradition which is flourishing more than ever. Sylar provides mid-week magic while Friday and Saturday are the Posh Prosecco nights with exotic cocktails and discounted bottles. The Sunday Carvery is a very popular family event and morphed into a luxury Carvery for Easter and will do again for Boxing Day. Booking is essential, even on ordinary Sundays.

Wendover Parish Council PageMatters Arising

Speed monitoringRecently it was announced at the Local Area Forum that Thames Valley Police will be putting less priority on speed monitoring and relying more on Parish Councils and local groups to inform them of hotspots. Your Chair has been up to Princess Mary Gate to meet local residents and shares their concerns regarding speeding and dangerous driving – not helped by the state of the unadopted roads. The MAV (Mobile Activated Vehicle) signs, which monitor speeding, should be in use very soon.

Grant Application RequestsThe Parish Council annually set major and minor grant budgets in order to provide financial assistance to outside organisations, projects and activities which provide services for local residents. Requests for grants of over £1000 in the 2015/16 financial year must be received by 1 December 2014. For an application form and a copy of the Parish Council Grant Policy please use the contact details below.

Applications will be assessed against agreed criteria. It may not be possible to offer support to every applicant as this will

depend on the number of applications and the budget available. Urgent applications made later in the year and into the new financial year may be considered, but there is no guarantee any budget will be available.

HS2 – Evidence for Select CommitteeAn information HUB has been established at the Clock Tower for evidence, research, data etc, that may be useful to anyone in the Wendover or Halton Parishes who has Petitioned the Government regarding HS2 mitigation.

The intention is to share information, thereby avoiding duplication of effort for those called to give evidence to the HS2 Select Committee. The HUB is available on the internet in a password protected area. If you are a petitioner and would like access to the Hub, then please contact the Parish Council. You will need to provide your name and petition number you were given by the Select Committee before being given the email address and password. The password is confidential, so please do not pass it to anyone else. Information will be added to the HUB as it becomes available so check regularly. If you do not have internet access please contact us for further information.

Walnut Tree MeadowA request has been made to AVDC for Walnut Tree Meadow to be listed on the ‘Community Right to Bid’ register. The Community Right to Bid can be used to ‘pause’ the sale of

buildings or land and allows the community time to develop a ‘bid to buy’ and in the event AVDC decided to sell Walnut Tree Meadow they would have to notify us allowing the opportunity to persuade them against selling or put together a bid for the land, http://mycommunityrights.org.uk/community-right-to-bid/

Community OrchardThe Parish Council propose to plant a Community Orchard in Rope Walk Meadow, which is already planted with wild flowers. The Orchard will consist of sixty heritage fruit trees, one for each name on the War Memorial from the Great War and two names on the register held at St. Mary’s church, of people who were not Wendover residents.

The trees will be apple, pear, gage and cherry plus two each of mulberry, quince and medlar. All are trees that used to grow in the Vale but are now rarely found. Details of the named varieties are held in the Clock Tower.

It is hoped that members of the Community, and organisations, will ‘adopt a tree’ and volunteers will form a Management Committee which will, together with the Parish Council, manage the Orchard. Planting is expected to start early in the spring.
