RIP Donald BedfordAs we were going to press with this issue of Wendover News, we heard the sad news that Donald Bedford had died. Dr Donald Bedford founded Chilterns MS Centre, which has now blossomed into a charity providing comprehensive and holistic care such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, oxygen therapy, acupuncture and massage to 300 people each week.

A large number of Centre members will remember Donald with great affection as he was the Centre Manager for many years. Tragically, Donald’s wife, Irene, died just a few days before Donald so there was a joint funeral for them.

The funeral was on Friday 18 December in Hughenden Church (St Michael and All Angels), High Wycombe.

New Manager at Wendover’s Florence Nightingale Hospice ShopWendover’s Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop has a new manager - Brigitte Russett. She was born in Lyndhurst, Southampton and is a fully qualified pharmacist having worked previously for Lloyds Pharmacy. She has two sons, one of whom lives in Australia. Her hobbies are gardening, eating out and spending time with her family. Her holiday destination of choice is Cyprus.

Brigitte moved to Aylesbury 10 years ago, and her first charity job was with the Helen and Douglas House shop in Thame. Prior to coming to the Wendover shop, she had no connections with Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity and she is delighted to find herself surrounded by a wonderful team of volunteers. She is completely overwhelmed by the number of donations coming through the door. This makes her proud

to be working for such a great charity with strong local roots and managing a recognisably vibrant shop. Brigitte wants to thank everyone for their generous support.

Happy 10th Birthday (see ad page 7)Cornelli Sugarcraft SpecialistTen years ago, aged 32, and my daughter not quite 2 years old, a long time ambition was realised as I took over the keys to a little cake supplies shop at the bottom of Wendover High Street. Previously called the Cake Factory, I renamed it Cornelli Sugarcraft Specialist after a piped cake decorating design, and began a new and exciting chapter in my life.

The plan was to sell cake decorating supplies and equipment from the shop, make cakes from home and teach new skills to budding cake decorators in the evening, while all the time being a hands- on mother to my daughter Eve.

I had no idea the profound effect one little shop could have on my life and the lives of so many of my customers. Ten years later, dozens of Wedding Cakes have been designed, created and delivered, hundreds of Birthday Cakes have made people’s

day, and countless other celebrations have passed with the cutting of one of my cakes.

Ten years later, so many people have attended our courses, learnt skills to make their own wedding cakes, birthday cakes and family celebrations and had fun exploring a new hobby, starting their own business or just making new friends on a fun evening out.

Ten years later, Cornelli has made its mark on Wendover High Street, bringing customers from far and wide to our wonderful town to enjoy everything it has to offer. We built a website, but have taken the decision not to trade online. We like to talk to our customers, and we have truly become an Aladdin’s cave, offering a hugely comprehensive range of cake craft supplies and the inspiration for so many projects.

The vision behind Cornelli was to encourage people to have a go at cake decorating, and have a go you most certainly have.

Ten years later, the dynamic of the shop is very different. We have more stock, more staff, more exotic window displays, more internet presence and while my capacity to take cake orders has declined, my teaching commitments have grown

out of sight. Cornelli has evolved and is looking to the future.

Like all businesses, I couldn’t have done it without the support from my wonderful staff, friends and family: my Dad, who sorts out my paperwork, my Mum, who is always on hand for childcare

duties (and anything else), my partner Steve, who listens endlessly to the traumas of my days (and much more besides) and my daughter, now nearly 12, who is the reason behind my drive.

Most of all, I couldn’t have made Cornelli a success without each and every one of my customers, and so this January I would like to say a huge thank you for the past ten years and here’s to the next ten!!!

Wendover Youth CentreIn the last Wendover News, page 31, we told you all about our project Fruity Calls, where we are working in partnership with Budgens to take left over fruit and turn it in to delicious fruity bites. As you read this, production will be underway as our crowd-funding campaign was successful and we were able to raise the £1000 we needed. We could not have done it without you: a big thank you to all individuals that pledged and to Wendover Rotary and Sweeney’s Budgens for supporting us as organisations. Visit our page on www.crowdfunder.co.uk/fruity-call.

We also had the privilege to help out at the Rotary’s Let The Chilterns Sing: Wendover Remembers concert and two of the Youth Centre’s very own Elves helped Santa at the Christmas Lights Switch On. It has been really good for our young people to give back to the community.

Sharon Bolton Visits LibraryBestselling author of nine crime novels, Sharon Bolton entertained a packed

audience in Wendover Community Library on Monday 30 November. The evening included an interview-style format, which was led by Sharon’s publicist from Transworld Publishing, Alison Barrow, and concluded with an interactive Q and A.

This was Sharon’s second visit to Wendover Library since her first book, “Sacrifice”, in 2004. She gave an honest and grounded insight into her life as a writer, the inspiration behind her work, her approach to plot and how her characters are born. Sharon’s most recent book, “Little Black Lies”, was introduced to the audience with a short reading by her, to give a flavour of what’s to come. Waterstones brought along several titles for sale, which were snapped up ready for signing by Sharon afterwards.

The evening was a great success, and more author visits are being planned for next year with Transworld Publishing. Also, Lucinda Hawksley is due to visit again in April 2016.

JANUARY 1916The withdrawal of the Allies from Gallipoli was completed in January - amazingly without a single casualty. By the end of 1915 the flow of volunteers into the British forces was failing to keep pace with the casualty numbers and in January 1916 the Military Service Act introduced Conscription - initially for single men and childless widowers. Zeppelins continued to bomb England.

In January Halton Camp suffered its own bomb explosion. The Bucks Herald of 15 January reported that: “An inquest was held on Friday evening, January 7th, into the death of Private George Cecil Brock, of the Essex Regiment, aged 18. The deceased was killed during a lecture explaining the construction of hand grenades. In his lecture Lieutenant F. Dickinson had taken a grenade to pieces and had put the separate portions on the table which was between him and the men. He went among the men for about ten minutes showing and explaining a diagram. He told the men how to put it together again but he gave no instructions for this to be done and ‘it would be contrary to custom and practice for anyone to do so without permission’. The deceased who had recently come out of hospital was seen sitting by the fire well away from the table but suffered 10 penetrating bullet wounds from the explosion.” The report is silent on how exactly the explosion occurred.

The January 1st Bucks Advertiser and North Bucks Free Press reported the proceedings of the Aylesbury Petty Sessions: “Supt. Wootton stated that about two o’clock on Christmas Day a man named Haynes employed by Mr A. Seaton, Aylesbury, called at the Marquis of Granby, Weston Turville, with a horse and cart. As he entered the house two soldiers left, and directly afterwards Haynes’ attention was called to the fact that the two soldiers were driving off with the cart as fast as they could in the direction of Aylesbury. A motor car came along and Haynes obtained a ride in it but failed to trace the soldiers or the horse and cart. On the same afternoon P.C. Dillow saw the defendants on the Lower Stoke Road in charge of the horse and cart. The constable stopped them, but in consequence of their conduct he considered it wise to obtain assistance. Fortunately he met the Military Police who at the time were also making inquiries. They overtook the accused, who were from Halton Camp, and arrested them. Because their Regiment was ordered to leave the following day an officer from the 24th Middlesex Regiment asked the magistrates to hand the men over to the Military Authorities for punishment”.

The bad winter weather and the heavy traffic played havoc with the roads of Wendover. The surveyor from Wycombe District Council attended a Wendover Parish Council meeting to answer a complaint about the amount of mud left lying on the roads. The

surveyor stated that it was impossible to cart away mud in such a liquid state and it must be left for water to drain out. The Clerk for the Wendover Council replied, “regretting that the surveyor could not keep abreast of the work in the same way as it was carried out by surveyors of other towns, but that it should be thought necessary to leave mud as a trap to the unwary”.

At noon on Wednesday 26th of January the Trustees of the Almond’s, Bradshaw’s, Hunt’s, Menning’s, Mallison’s and Saunderson’s charities distributed bread and money to parishioners in the Parish Room. The report in the Bucks Herald noted that the Vicar received 6s 8d from the Almond’s Charity for preaching a sermon in Wendover Church on the Wednesday of Easter week and that rent from Thomas Mallison’s ground was used to buy Bibles and Prayer Books and provide bread for the poor of the Parish.

There were no reports in January 1916 of local Wendover servicemen being wounded or killed as a result of actions at the Front. It was a situation that was to change dramatically as the year progressed.

Wendover Remembers Wall HangingCongratulations to Deb McGuire and the Plainstitch Workshop www.plainstitch.co.uk for all their hard work on bringing the Wall Hanging project to fruition. They like to embark on a piece of work for the local community each year and their effort in 2015 was huge.

Wendover Remembers is a loose grouping which encourages any section of the local community to express their feelings and discoveries about what happened in Wendover during World War One. They approached Wendover Sewing Bee suggesting a textile commemoration would be a suitable lasting memento and so the project began, detailed in Wendover News print editions, http://www.wendovernews.co.uk/print-editions:

2015 Mar p 9 introduction2015 Aug p 9 individual poppies2015 Nov p 1 Remembrance Parade

As planned, the wall hanging was introduced to its local public as part of the annual Remembrance Parade. The Wall Hanging has

now been photographed by the Clock Tower, Coombe Hill Monument and as people gathered by the War Memorial for the two minutes silence at 11am on Armistice Day, 11 November 2015.

Later in November, the Wall Hanging was suspended from the ringing platform in St Mary’s church to provide a backdrop to the Wendover Remembers concert organised by Wendover Rotary on Saturday 21 November.

The next contributing group to display the Wall Hanging was Cherry Tree House in Dobbins Lane as some of the residents had sewn individual poppies. After that it continued its journey through John Hampden Infant and Wendover CofE Junior Schools where the bulk of the individual poppies were sewn. St Anne’s Church will also display it as all three local Christian congregations inspired some of the blocks.

A booklet is being written explaining the meaning of the blocks and identifying everyone who was involved with sewing and each one will receive a copy. Eventually it will be hung in Wendover Community Library for all to enjoy.

The Wendover Remembers Project is slowly seeping into the consciousness of many locals, including young people, for whom the World War I period of history seems extremely remote.

Following on from the successful completion of the Wall Hanging, see page 10, some young people who attend the Wendover Youth Centre Wednesday Drop In sessions are relating normal 21st century activities to how they happened a century ago. The lads are fanatical about the football related cross bar challenge and remembered the Christmas 2014 TV advert reconstructing the famous Christmas

Day Football match so they are using those ideas to create a video. Sam Winter and Toby Hulcoop said, “When we started, it was about the football, but as we thought about what happened in 1915 we couldn’t ignore what they went through.”

Similarly, the girls love inventing street dance routines but know that a hundred years ago dancing in couples was all the rage so they are creating a video to explore those fashions. Livia and Caitlin Purnell said, “We enjoy dancing and this contrasts with the horror of war - how lucky we are not to be in that situation.”

Last month I suggested we may hear Wendover’s fate in the Additional Provisions being published– tunnel, barrier or . . ? Well apparently it will not be in AP5, it is in Supplementary Environmental Statement 4SES. including environmental effects of changes that are new, but within the existing powers and limits already being sought under the Bill. More importantly if you wish to object then you have to deposit your petition by 8 January.

SES4 (SES4-010-001) describes the work as additional noise mitigation provided by:• extending the green tunnel southward by 100m• a 6m high noise fence barrier approximately

780m in length along the eastern side of the HS2 route, between the Small Dean viaduct and the new location of the south portal, replacing the previously proposed 4m high noise fence barrier

• a 6m high noise fence barrier approximately 340m in length located within the cutting at the northern portal of the Wendover green tunnel

Earthworks would be constructed alongside the Wendover green tunnel south portal to reduce the visual impact of the noise fence barriers and the extension of the green tunnel. Has the Select Committee already decided against a bored tunnel for Wendover despite our petitions which I thought

were very powerful? It also does not give us a great deal of time to respond. Please petition if you do not want to be surrounded by 6m high barriers.

The Select Committee are being strict on Loci standi challenges – that is you have to be directly and adversely impacted by the proposed change compared to the original scheme. Obviously this amendment will be much worse visually than the original scheme. It was bad enough before with trains on embankments and now they have added 6m barriers to the embankments. There is also the consequential impact on tourism and business. Think how it impacts you and put it in your petition. The Parish Council website has details.

The Wendover petitions I saw or watched were great and all delivered powerful messages to the Select Committee. There can be little doubt that they certainly got the message that they have to do something for Wendover. Whatever is offered will be reflected in Additional Provisions or SES. As a community we all need to review this and respond once we have the detail.

We must also on protect the community during the construction period, eg Code of Construction Practise which has been issued and will be policed

by the local government structure. In terms of noise, dust pollution and working hours this will be AVDC. Our local district councillors – Steve Bowles, Andrew Southam and Peter Strachan - have been supportive of our efforts on HS2 and their role will become more important. As the Local Environmental Plan is developed to protect communities in Aylesbury Vale our voice needs to be heard. Equally on traffic we need to liaise with BCC to ensure our concerns and issues are addressed. We expect our County Councillor Chris Adams to ensure Wendover is protected. Similarly, we need to engage with the Environmental Agency to ensure the hydrogeological issues we have identified are correctly mitigated in the design to ensure both the Wendover Arm Canal and the Weston Turville SSSI site are protected.

Assuming we do not get a fully bored tunnel though the Chilterns, and the project is not cancelled because we cannot afford it, then we will eventually have the opportunity to petition the House of Lords. For those of you fresh from the House of Commons Select Committee hearings, we may have more luck with the Lords.

Bacombe Hill is a precious fragment of chalk grassland, scrub and woodland. More than 100 years ago it was identified by Sir Charles Rothschild as a site to be protected. Subsequently, it became one of the original Rothschild Reserves.

Bacombe Hill is a clear example of how much of the Chilterns scarp has changed during the 20th century. Once open chalk downland with little or no scrub, with changes in farming techniques, livestock farming was given up in favour of arable production. If not possible to plough, much of the steep scarp of the Chilterns was abandoned and so the process of succession took hold. By the end of the 20th century the upper slopes were dominated by mature hawthorn scrub.

In recent years Buckinghamshire County Council has carried out a lot of work to reverse this trend. In late 2015, Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust took on the long-term management of Bacombe Hill Nature Reserve on behalf of BCC and the Trust will continue

to restore the chalk grassland across the site with rotational scrub clearance as well as coppice work to keep invasive trees in check.

We began the process by putting a small herd of 15 Redpoll cattle on the hill during October and November and then in

December we mowed back a lot of the invasive scrub that the cattle could not deal with.

As part of our management of this fabulous chalk grassland reserve we have set up a monthly volunteer work party to help us to control the scrub and weeds on the site. If you would like to join us, we meet on the second Thursday of the month. Please contact Steve Keene, volunteer warden, email [email protected] or ring 07544 576854.For more information about this reserve and Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust please visit www.bbowt.org.uk/reserves/bacombe-hill.

Hearing Loss & Social Occasions• Try to arrive early and check out the room.

Hearing aids don’t like echo, so acoustically anywhere with hard surfaces is bad news – the best environment would have carpets, curtains and soft furnishings.

• If it’s a sit-down occasion, ask the host/hostess not to put you next to someone who speaks very quietly! If you have better hearing on one side than the other, let them know. Also, when you take your seat, do mention to your neighbours that you have a hearing loss and you are not being rude if you don’t respond when they speak. You’ll be surprised how many people say they do too!

• Try to avoid poorly-lit areas. If you keep your back to the light it will be on the face of the person you are speaking to which will help with lipreading.

• If you wear a hearing aid with a directional programme, switch it on. This focuses on the speech of the person in front of you and cuts out background noise. Also, if you have

a volume control turn it down – everyone will be shouting over the noise anyway!

• In restaurants ask for a quiet table, away from music sources and the kitchen.

• The concentration required in noisy situations is very tiring, so take breaks somewhere quiet if you can. Enjoy your food – don’t try to eat, speak and listen at the same time!

• Lastly - make a New Year’s resolution to join a lipreading class!

Judy Perry offers classes in Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss at Wendover Library on Fridays. Next term starts 8 January. Contact [email protected] for further details or call or text 07837 993923. See advert page 4.

Chilterns Cycle Challenge Returns!Saddle Up! Ride through the beautiful Chilterns countryside and raise money for Rennie Grove Hospice Care in the charity’s popular annual Chilterns Cycle Challenge, Sunday 20 March 2016. Choose from a 75 mile, 35 mile or 10k route, which all start and finish in Aylesbury town centre. The event promises to be a fabulous day and Rennie Grove Hospice Care is encouraging people of all ages and abilities to join them to take on the challenge.

Online registration is now open and hundreds of residents will be taking to two wheels to support the charity, which provides care for patients diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illness and their families.

Last year’s event saw over 500 people come together and tackle the Chiltern Hills and cycle paths, raising over £30,000 in sponsorship.

It’s hoped that the challenge in 2016 will raise even more for the charity, helping it to meet the increasing demand for its services.

Gillian Barnett, Director of Fundraising & Marketing at Rennie Grove Hospice Care says “The Chilterns Cycle Challenge is a well-loved event, and much of its popularity is down to the fact that there’s a choice of three fantastic routes so there’s something for everyone.”

Entry fees will depend on the distance you choose to take on. An adult (aged 18+) Early Bird entry for the 10k route is £15, for the 35 mile route it’s £17, and if you’re up for the ultimate challenge it’s £27 to cycle 75 miles. Child entry is £7.50 (aged 5-17 incl) and children under five can enter free of charge. From Friday 1 January, those wanting to take part will pay the full price, and the charity is encouraging both past participants and event newcomers to sign up early and start fundraising.

Appeal for History HelpPupils at Perth Academy in Scotland are working on a project to honour the 168 former pupils and staff who fell in the Great War, and who are commemorated on the school memorial.

One of the fallen is Cecil Moir Stewart, whose family has ties to St Michael’s Church, Halton, under the family name of Cameron.

The questions raised by the school are: Do any of the family of Neil Cameron still live in the area? If they do, do they have any family records? If not, are they able to provide details for someone who might be able to provide some information? Please contact [email protected] if you have details.

Poppy Appeal ThanksThis year’s Poppy Appeal has again been very successful thanks to the generosity of the people of Wendover and RAF Halton. The appeal this year has already grossed nearly £8000.00. Thanks to all shops, outlets and volunteers who helped with this very worthy and worthwhile cause. A special mention of 2409ATC RAF Halton who again this this year were most helpful with the appeal.

John Thompson, Poppy Appeal

Swimming Pool ThanksThank you to everyone who supported The Wendover Swimming Pool at the Christmas lights switch on in Wendover. We’d

particularly like to thank the Parish Council for organising the event and nominating us as the chosen charity, and all those who raised money for the pool - especially including our neighbours-on-the-night, The Harpenden Building Society.

It was fantastic to see so many people enjoy the evening, and it was great to be able to talk about the pool. The Wendover Swimming Pool is operated by a charity - and we rely on the time and support that is generously donated by the community.

If you want to get involved, then we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’d like to train to be a lifeguard or to provide first-aid cover, provide

admin support, or help with maintenance tasks - get in touch with us via our website: www.wendoverswimmingpool.co.uk.

Wendover Choral Society ThanksWendover Choral Society held a raffle after the performance of The Messiah on Saturday 5 December for a Christmas hamper which contained over £200.00 of festive goodies. The lucky winner was Julie Chappell, who is a Wendover resident. We raised over £500 through the sales of the raffle tickets which is fabulous for us, so a huge thank you to our supportive community.

The directors and volunteers from Wendover Celebrates would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Keep checking the Facebook in January as we start to have some firm plans that we can share with you about our event, which takes place Sunday 1 May 2016.

In the meantime, we can give you a taster of some exciting things being discussed, for example, a Wild West gun slinging show to fit with our 2016 theme. We’re also in discussions with a number of local museums and theatre groups to provide day entertainment for some of our younger visitors.

The evening promises to be built on the success of previous years too, and we’re speaking to some local promoters who are able to give us access not only to a huge range of high quality local musicians but also artists who might be more household names . . . but we can’t reveal anything just yet on that!

Our next fundraising event will be on the evening of Saturday 19 March at Wendover Memorial Hall and will be a Barn Dance, again fitting in with our Wild West theme. The fundraising committee is meeting in January to discuss logistics and we’ll start sharing information and telling you how you can buy tickets once this is decided.

Thank you to all the local school children who took part in the logo competition. the judges

had great fun choosing from the high quality entries. The winner was chosen just before the end of term and is on the front page of this January edition of Wendover News. More details about the winning process in the next edition of Wendover News.

Finally, all of this is being organised and delivered by a fabulous band of volunteers, but we still need more. You don’t have to commit to a huge amount of time, you might be able to just help on the day or with the Barn Dance, but we really need more support if the event is to be everything it has the potential to be. Many hands make light work after all! So please get in touch if you think you might be able to help.

To keep up to date with developments, fundraising events and how to get involved please go to www.wendovercelebrates.com, email [email protected] or check the Facebook page by searching for ‘Wendover Celebrates’.

Annual RAF Sports Board AwardsThe Annual RAF Sports Board Awards have been presented to recipients in a ceremony at Halton House Officers’ Mess at RAF Halton. Awards were presented by Air Chief Marshal, Sir Andrew Pulford, Chief of the Air Staff with over 100 guests and sponsors attending. Sir Andrew paid tribute to the standard and professionalism of all the recipients.

Sports Team of the Year went to the Air Force’s male rugby union team, who defied history and the odds this year to pick up their first inter-services title in over two decades. Sportsman of the Year went to Flight Sergeant Kevin Johnson, who has dominated clay pigeon shooting in the RAF for the past four years. Sportswoman of the Year was awarded to Squadron Leader

Joan Cawthray, who has enjoyed runaway success at service level since retiring from international canoeing more than 20 years ago.

Sqn Ldr Cawthray said: “I was very pleased to be nominated for the award, not only as an individual but also pleased that the

sport of canoeing is recognised at such a high level. I was completely surprised when my name was read out as all of the citations were of a high standard. It was a lovely occasion to be able to bring my parents to, as they were the ones many years ago who

ferried me around the country to canoe competitions and spent countless hours on cold river banks watching a young teenager realise her dream of representing her country in the canoe slalom discipline.”

Changes to the doctor teamWe very much regret that Dr Nighat Arif will not be returning to the practice after her maternity leave. She has made this very difficult decision because of her son’s health needs. Dr Kate Jewell will continue to cover her work. Sadly, Dr Anna Milward will be leaving the practice at the beginning of February 2016 to move to another post. Arrangements for cover of her patient list will be advised as soon as possible. Our new website Our new website (www.westongrove.com) is now live, with lots of new functions and advice for patients. The actual switchover happened quicker than either we or our supplier anticipated, bringing with it a few technical hitches which have now been rectified. We apologise for the frustration this caused and thank you for your patience. We have had some feedback regarding the repeat prescription ordering system. There is a built in security element that requires patients to type in the medication required each time it is ordered. We appreciate that for some this may be frustrating, but the design is to protect patient confidentiality. To order your repeat prescription online, please click on ‘prescriptions’, then click ‘order your repeat prescription online’, fill in the form and click submit. The details are then sent securely to the practice for processing. Minor mistakes in spelling will not normally cause any problems, but if there are any queries about your order we will contact you. We recommend you register for “Patient Access” via the website which allows you to access certain aspects of your medical record, such as immunisations .webGPOn 6 January 2016 we will launch the new digital front door to the practice, webGP, which will be accessed via our website. It will enable our patients to access information on about 100 common health conditions, including advice on self-help treatments and what symptoms might indicate a serious problem. webGP will also give you the opportunity to consult electronically with a member of the doctor team by completing a special form on-line. webGP can be accessed anywhere where the internet is available using a computer or a mobile device such as a smartphone. It will be available at all hours and will avoid the necessity of having to wait for an appointment.

HS2 CommitteeAs chance would have it, I appeared to give evidence to the HS2 Select Committee on 25 November immediately after the presentation from the Wendover HS2 Group. You can read the full transcript of what I said or, if you are a glutton for punishment, watch the video via my website www.davidlidington.com. Follow the link to ‘campaigns’ and then to HS2.

I deliberately used this appearance to talk about Wendover and the case for additional tunnelling. The gist of my argument was that a deep tunnel, either mined or bored, would protect residents of Wendover from noise, safeguard Wendover Dean, London Road and Dunsmore by doing away with the need for viaducts and embankments. An extended green tunnel, while an inferior option to a deep tunnel, would at least give additional protection to St Mary’s Church, Chiltern Way Wendover Campus and the southern end of the village.

We know already that the chief objection to a deep tunnel has always been the cost, estimated

by HS2 Ltd at around £350 million. I was able to highlight a new analysis of costs (known as the T-BOW scheme) which suggests that by making a number of relatively modest changes to HS2’s assumptions, changes that reflect actual experience in other major tunnel projects, that cost could be reduced significantly to a net cost of between £50 and £212 million.

I am not an engineer or an expert on tunnels, but the people responsible for the T-BOW scheme are. I hope that their case influences the Committee.

I shall be going back to the Committee in the New Year, to make the strongest case I on non-tunnel issues, not only in respect of Wendover, but also for my constituents in Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury and Fairford Leys.

CompensationI responded to the Committee’s call for evidence about problems with compensation schemes. You can read my letter on my website on the HS2 page.

There are a couple of important points that I think are worth sharing. First, HS2 Ltd has said openly to the Committee that they will now accept, in lieu of the need to put a property on the market for months, written evidence from estate agents that they would refuse to market the property at all without being paid a fee up-front.

Second, the Committee has encouraged people to present their case where appropriate in terms of someone’s life plan, involving a house move at a certain stage, being wrecked by blight from HS2. While I can’t give any guarantees of success, it is also my experience of local cases that framing the argument in this way is likely to be helpful.

I remain, as always, willing to discuss individual cases in confidence with the constituents concerned. Rt Hon David Lidington MP www.davidlidington.com

Deb McGuire is the mother of Lara (12), Finn (11) and Isla (7) and has sewn all her life. In rural Leicestershire, her lovely Nan taught her to sew. After a spell living in London and abroad she moved to Wendover with husband Peter, and young family 10 years ago and her parents followed them here. She now runs The PlainStitch Workroom in Back Street, a modern sewing school and shop.

Deb started making quilts when it wasn’t at all fashionable as a hobby. But since then she has attempted to convince almost everyone she meets that they too should make a quilt. She says, “I didn’t really tell people about my hobby, which is ironic as now when anyone meets me they usually say, ‘Oh you’re PlainStitch Deb, the Quilt Lady’”! She started teaching friends and neighbours in her front room. Others also asked her how to make a quilt and eventually Christopher Pallet Ltd took pity on her repeated enquiries for a “little outbuilding or garage to rent to teach sewing in” and turned their first floor over to

her. She opened The PlainStitch Workroom, in March 2014, and never looked back.

The first floor of the lovely Georgian building on the High Street has been transformed into an oasis of sunny colourful fabric fun (look up next time you walk past the estate agents and you’ll see their cast iron sewing machine sign, entrance through the shiny blue front door in Back Street). The two classrooms and shop are always buzzing with amazing people making amazing things! Deb says, “It’s a joy to be in the heart of Wendover with a sunny south facing view looking over the rooftops of the Red Lion and across to the hills beyond. People pop in as they visit the market and The PlainStitch Workroom is a community as much as a shop.” Deb has now taught well over 150 people in Wendover to make their first quilt in their Simple Sampler class and has shared such special times with these wonderful students. She says, “Each quilt and its maker have a special place in my memory. I remember

every block! The roots of quilt making are deep in history and modern makers feel that same desire to make something meaningful for their families, to reuse precious fabrics, and to put a little bit of their personality into something that will be passed through the generations of their own family. In the modern hectic world taking time out to make something precious with your hands has so many well-being benefits and is such a nurturing hobby, as the thriving Wendover Sewing Bee attests.” See also page 10.

PlainStitch has come a long way in the two years that the shop and workroom have been open with over 50 different classes for all age groups from Miss Stitch for 7-11 year olds, teen sewers, embroiderers, knitters, dressmakers and so many more. Visitors are always welcome so ring the doorbell and come up for a browse. The shop is open Tues – Sat 9.30-1pm (2pm on Sat). All the classes are online at www.plainstitch.co.uk/spring classes. Christmas Event 2015We hope that everyone who attended enjoyed the Friday 4 D e c e m b e r Christmas event on the Manor Waste and would like to thank the staff who worked hard in organising the evening and made sure everything was packed up and tidied. Also thanks go to everyone else who helped make the night such a marvellous event. All feedback has been very positive.

Empty ShopsYou will be aware that there are currently two shops vacant on the High Street, a number of residents and retailers have expressed concern about the type of businesses which may take on the premises. Please be aware that the Parish Council has no powers regarding retail property and is not given prior notice about which business will move in. The only time the Parish Council is involved is when a planning application is made for ‘change of use’ or for new signage.

New Bus Shelter Following a request from a bus user, the Parish Council is working with Bucks County Council to look at installing a bus shelter at the current bus stop near the junction of Aylesbury Road/Chiltern Road. We are also continuing to speak to BCC about changes to the stop outside the George and Dragon. Once the County Council provides us with its plans for improving the layout of the stop, we can then replace the bus shelter.

Heron Path We are pleased to report that the work to the Heron Path railings has been completed. The Canal and River Trust, who are responsible for the fencing, contributed the materials and the Parish Council funded the installation. We hope that perhaps,

in the new financial year, the Trust may be in a position to carry out replacement of an additional stretch of railings.

Works to Manor WasteImprovements to Manor Waste are expected to go ahead between January and March 2016. This will include a new surface, drainage, power points, lighting and street furniture. There will be some disruption in the immediate area, so please bear with us while the work is being carried out. We are currently considering the situation with the weekly and local produce markets while work is going on and will put out notices about this nearer the time. There is encouraging news from AVDC, that following our application for a grant to the District Council, there is a strong possiblity we will receive a substantial amount to help fund the works.

Street lightingThank you to all who report defective lights in Wendover. We manage all lights except for those on the main roads through Wendover and work with our contractor, SparkX, to repair faulty lights reported to us. Although some fixes are quite quick and just need a new bulb, others are more troublesome and caused by problems with the power going into the lighting column. These require work by UK Power Networks, who only commit to carry out repairs in 28 days and have no system for reporting to us once the fault is fixed. If you have reported a defective light to us, in some cases it could be repaired the next day, others may take over a month.
