MARCH 1915The first major British attack on the Western Front took place at Neuve Chapelle 10-13 March 1915 with limited success. The British, including Indian troops, had 13,000 casualties and the Germans around 14,000. The Royal Flying Corps made its first bombing raid against enemy rail centres. The British liner SS Falaba was sunk with the loss of a hundred passengers including the first American casualty of the war. Two German submarines were sunk in the English Channel. On 11 March the British government announced a blockade of German ports and issued an Order banning neutral countries from trading with Germany. Ypres, defended by the British, was under constant attack by German forces.

A Wendover man, Charles Atkins (Ox and Bucks Light Infantry), who had taken part in the Christmas Truce on the Western Front, was wounded and returned home He wrote

to his parents, who lived in London Road, that he was being treated in a hospital in Oxford. The wound must have been severe and Charles was eventually invalided out of the army. In November 1916 the Wendover Magazine noted “Charlie Atkins (whose arm is a little stronger) has joined the staff at Stone Asylum. His brother Jim is still in France.”

The Diocesan Inspector gave the Wendover School a good report in March saying: “This is an efficient school of well-taught and intelligent children”. The report praised the written work throughout the school which was “well above average”. During the last week of the month Miss Avery gave lessons in cooking economical meals. Each day seven girls from the Upper School shopped, cooked and ate a two-course dinner. The meals were planned to be healthy and satisfying and suitable for a week for a family of two adults and four children. The daily cost of the ingredients

for these family meals was, at the Grocers, 2s5½d and at the Butchers, 10d. Other costs were: flour 9d, bread 2d, milk 3d, onions 6d and vegetables 9½d. The total amount spent amounted to 5s 9d per day which, in decimal currency, is equivalent to 30p. Examples of the menu are given in the School Log Book and include Vegetable Pie and Stewed Figs; Meat and Vegetable Pie and Rice Pudding; Onion Pie and Suet Jam Pudding; Scotch Broth and Ginger Pudding and Irish Stew and Currant Dumplings. What more could you want?

The Bucks Advertiser & Aylesbury News of 13 March reported that: “The extraordinary traffic on the Tring Road made conditions indescribable. Preparations are being made by some enterprising persons for the troops, no fewer than seven coffee shops being erected between the Camp and the Town Clock. The premises are neither ornamental nor attractive, but the purpose in view is a good one.” Less pleasing was the report that six Missionary Society collection boxes kept at the Baptist Church had been opened and the money stolen.

In association with

One development from the Wendover Remembers Group is the commission of a wall hanging to mark the 2018 commemorations. This is being led by Deb McGuire and Claire Wheeler of PlainStitch and will be sewn by the members of The Wendover Sewing Bee. It will involve people of all ages from the village, primarily the mothers, grandmothers and children of Wendover in commemoration and remembrance of the sacrifice of the men, women and children of 1914 – 18.

The 100 year commemoration is both a time to look back and think about the sacrifices that were made by men and women in our village, and across Europe – but also to teach the next generation about the folly of war. This quilt will encompass both. In order to achieve this, Wendover Sewing Bee is working in collaboration with many village groups, including children from both primary schools.

Wendover Sewing Bee will make a 72 inch x 72 inch quilted wall hanging, made up of nine text and pictorial blocks designed by the various institutions and groups in the village. These will

be hand sewn by members of the Wendover Sewing Bee. Around 120 children (60 from each school) will be invited to participate by each making an individual hand sewn poppy, which will form a “sea” of poppies (each initialled in stitch by each child) which will fit around the panels. It will be patchwork in style and made up of lots

of different donated fabrics from our group to reflect the Make Do and Mend spirit of the time. It will be hung at the Library, local churches and in the schools at various times from 11.11.15 through to 11.11.18 and it will be included in the various village events that are being planned by the Parish Council.

Staff and families at a Wendover Pre-school are celebrating after Ofsted graded them an overall good with an outstanding grade in providing a provision that is highly effective and exceptional at meeting the needs of all children.

Wendover Pre-school, held at the Memorial Hall in Wharf Road, was praised for its highly skilled team of Early Years Practitioners. The inspection report states that staff interactions with the children are exemplary and that the setting provides an exceptional child-led environment.

The Pre-school was established in 1969 and they pride themselves on providing a small, family focused, child centred setting, which enables children to prepare for the school years ahead.

Wendover Pre-school’s team of dedicated and experienced childcare professionals work closely under the guidance of Sharon Tapping. Sharon is a qualified Early Years Specialist Teacher and a part time lecturer in Early Years Practice.

Sharon joined Wendover Pre-school five years ago and her years of experience and training have supported the team in making a positive difference to children’s wellbeing, learning and development. Sharon said: “The evidence that highly trained practitioners make the most difference to outcomes for young children in early years settings is irrefutable. My team are highly qualified and they understand the importance of continuing with training and keeping up to date with current research in the Early Years sector.”

Their recent Ofsted report substantiates this and identifies that the Wendover

Pre-school’s strong leadership and well-established team lead to an organised and efficient service. The report goes on to praise the impressive use of the environment both indoors and out, stating that, as a pack away setting, the Pre-school is well resourced and the staff provide innovative experiences to enrich children’s learning & development.

Sharon adds, “The Early Years curriculum values play as a necessity in order for children to develop emotionally, cognitively and physically. At Wendover Pre-school there is an emphasis on play being a vital part of the learning and development process. We provide a safe and stimulating environment that empowers children to join with other children and adults to “Love, Laugh, Play and Learn Together”.

“We are really pleased to have received such a positive inspection report. It illustrates just how, despite the challenges of being a pack away setting, we offer a very high standard of care and education that gives our children a flying start to their education.”

Exciting changes are taking place at The John Hampden School and Wendover CE Junior School as a result of the acceptance of a “bulge” class of children to the Foundation Stage at the infant school in September 2014. The leadership teams of the schools were consulted as the ‘bulge’ will travel though both establishments over the coming years. The decision to take in an extra class (30 children) will result in some County Council funded building work to improve and enhance the facilities at both schools.

Some building work and internal re-organisation has already occurred at The John Hampden School but future plans will see the school benefit from a larger brand new hall alongside improved kitchen/dining facilities to enable them to provide the free hot school meals that their pupils are entitled to. ICT capability will be enhanced with new resources and new facilities and a new library/learning space will be created.

The school had already planned to improve the Out of School Care accommodation and this will be included in the building work but it will be self-funded.

At Wendover CE Junior School, a number of planning meetings have been held to ensure that the necessary developments to the existing buildings are sympathetic and provide appropriate space for pupils from September 2017. This will include alterations to the school hall and a number of teaching rooms at the north end of the school.

The opportunity for much needed extra space to be created was too good an opportunity to miss and all pupils at both schools will benefit from the impressive improvements that are scheduled. The ‘bulge’ class are now half way through their first year of schooling and the major building work at The John Hampden School is scheduled to start in the Summer Term.

At the inauguration of the Community Library in December 2012, it was agreed we should make better use of the Library’s neglected rear garden. Therefore during Spring 2013 a team of volunteers cleaned out the area; retaining some vegetation and planting new shrubs, perennials, bulbs and summer flowers. Garden furniture was bought, and on fine summer days the garden was well used, both informally and for some planned events. In the spring of 2014 further planting took place and the tubs were stocked with bedding flowers. A gazebo was kindly loaned to offer relief, when needed, from the Summer heat.

During summer 2014, it was agreed that the volunteers would take responsibility for the two strips of garden at the front of the library, and work has started on these.

Meanwhile the area in front of the Library around the ‘Liffre Stone’ was increasingly causing concern. Overgrown with ivy

and other things it was frankly a mess. The original group of volunteers from the Community Library team therefore met with representatives of the Twinning Association and also with representatives of Lindengate charity. It was agreed that this area should become next on the list for improvement

and then maintenance, but first it had to be cleared and we were pleased that Bucks County Council agreed to this. The clearance exposed the fact that the trees had grown into the wall and the wall was therefore unstable. BCC then agreed to reduce the

height of the wall so that it was safe and this is the position we have now reached. The ‘new’ low wall will be capped and the trees will be checked to see if they present a danger and need to be cut back, but already the area looks better than the overgrown derelict site it used to be. When BCC have completed their work, (capping the wall and making sure the trees are safe), the team of volunteers from the three groups noted above will think about how the area should be planted and then maintained. The aim is to have an area in the middle of Wendover that will be attractive, and one of which the village can be proud.

We must thank those responsible for the work already completed on this area, and also for bringing the Library Garden back into use as an asset of Wendover‘s Library. We look forward to seeing the project completed for the coming Spring.

HS2 – ‘Happy Birthday’On 11 March, HS2 will be five years old. Unlike most children it’s still not communicating and is not walking! But seriously, near to £1Bn has been spent to date on this project and what has been achieved?• a business case with more holes in it than

a string bag• a route which seems to be deliberately

trying to do as much environmental damage as possible, especially in the Chilterns AONB

• a requirement for those living along the route to pay twice, once as a general taxpayer and secondly through property blight.

In all, it is a second rate idea, developed into a third rate project being implemented in a fourth rate way so not a happy birthday!

Local NewsThe POP are planning to hold a public meeting for local Petitioners on 14 March at Halton Village Hall. It is due to start at 9.30am and last about 2 hours. This has been arranged in response to request by some Petitioners. The

objective is to:• give a brief update on where we are with HS2 • allow Petitioners to socialize and network

with other Petitioners• identify training and help Petitioners need.Refreshments will be available. Tickets are available from the Wendover Parish office. Hope to see you there.

Select CommitteeThe select committee continues its work into assessing the proposed route of the project and its impact on local communities. Their work will cease at the end of March when the Houses of Parliament are formally dissolved for the election. They will start up again after 7 May and continue into the summer. The latest thinking is that the Chilterns will be heard after the summer recess and potentially towards the end of 2015.

Details about the Latest Government compensation scheme for HS2 are on www.wendovernews.co.uk/news/hs2-compensation-jan-2015.

After 2 years of hard work James and Nicola have decided that running The Russell is not for them and have left to focus on other business interests. On behalf of the Russell Arms Pub Company and the local community we thank them for the last 2 years and wish them all the best for the future.

Our search for a new tenant is now underway and we have received a significant amount of interest from some very high quality applicants, in a short space of time. We are excited by some of the conversations that we’re having and we expect to be in a position to appoint a new tenant towards the end of February. We remain focused on re-opening the pub as soon as possible, with a great new tenant that wants to embrace the local community and provide good food and drink.Matthew Porter, Russell Arms Pub Company Ltd

Harry Potter at Wendover LibraryOn Friday 13 February, 16 children and their parents and grandparents visited Wendover Library for its first ever Harry Potter night. Four older Hogwarts “prefects” were

assigned as house captains. Keeping the youngsters in check and working with them in teams, they admirably led them around our Hogwarts

library visiting Potions Corner, Olivanders, Knockturn and Diagon Alley, hunting down rather unpleasant sounding items, such as “flesh eating slug repellent” and “human toenails” to earn points.

A huge thank you to Chloe and Svetlana from Antiques at Wendover, who were kind enough to loan us some interesting objects, helping us to transform our library. Mel Greasby, Wendover Community Library more detail on www.wendovernews.co.uk

Business ForumCharity Coffee Monday, February with PACE Centre...What a wonderful way to kick off a new month AND a Monday by being part of “Coffee Monday” with the lovely No2 Pound Street. PACE took part on Monday February 2nd with such a warm welcome by Nicola and the team. All coffee donations on this day were donated to PACE and we raised a fantastic £120.00. PACE had the opportunity to meet some new faces in the community and explain our work, which is invaluable in spreading awareness to those who need our services.

PACE helps to transform the lives of children with disabilities, such as cerebral palsy. At PACE, children find their own voice, walk their own steps and discover that they can fully enjoy everyday life and become active members of society. PACE are looking forward to working with Nicola and all at No2 Pound Street in the near future. For more information on PACE please go to www.thepacecentre.org. See article page 33.

...and March with Chilterns MS CentreCome along to No2 Pound Street on Monday 2nd March. No2 will give you a FREE coffee or tea in exchange for a donation into the collecting pot in support of the Chilterns MS Centre Art Exhibition. We are hoping there will be a preview of the artwork to give you a taster of the Art Exhibition running on 7th and 8th March at the MS Centre and a chance to chat to the exhibition organisers as well.

‘Wine-Wise’ at No2 Pound StreetAfter the success of our tasting with Huia Vineyards from New Zealand, we have arranged another wine producer to visit us. On 18 March we have Jenna Bruwer from Springfield Estate in Robertson, South Africa joining us to present her family’s wines. Springfield have long been one of our favourite South African wineries, making a great range of wines which manage to balance modernity with a European sense of elegance and food-friendliness. They are still family-owned with more and more emphasis on organics and sustainability. Tickets for this event are £10 (£5 for our Wine Club members) and must be booked in advance - call 01296 585022 or email [email protected] to book your place. 7.30pm start time.

As well as this, we are continuing our focus on Sicilian wines, detailing the history and culture of this fascinating Island as well as stocking

a good range of its diverse and underrated wines. Various Sicilian wines will be available to taste throughout March, so pop in for a taste (or two..). After that, we will be turning our attention to the “Foot” of Italy, culminating in our Wine Club tasting on 22nd April - £10 entry or Free to Wine Club members - again, places must be booked in advance. So, come and join us in our journey “up the vinous leg” of Italy. See www.2poundstreet.com or follow us on Facebook or Twitter for more details.

Celebrating 50 years at Wendover Heights Veterinary CentreA familiar sight to anyone driving along Tring Road, Halton, is the blue flag fluttering outside Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre which has just celebrated its 50th birthday. On 1 January 1965, a young vet named John Parker opened his surgery in two rooms of a house in Aylesbury Road, Wendover. His work was caring for farm and working animals with little of the pet care that forms most of our work today. The practice soon expanded and John was joined by Mike Godsal in 1967. The practice became “Parker and Godsal” until the move to our current site in January 1991 when it was renamed Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre.

How times have changed! As the years passed, the practice grew with Nick Snookes, Sue Chorlton and Mike Hewitt joining the partnership. John went on to become President of the RCVS in 2004. He and Mike Godsal retired in 1995, Sue left in 2000 but the practice remains proudly independent, being owned by Nick Snookes and Mike Hewitt to this day. Mike was both “chuffed and embarrassed” to be awarded the Pet Plan Vet of the Year title in 2010. There are now over 60 people employed including six equine vets and ten small animal vets.

Our facilities at Halton include an equine clinic, canine hydrotherapy and acupuncture, puppy training and a pet shop. Several vets also treat exotic animals and Wendover Heights provides services to the film industry which has led to our involvement with the 2012 Olympics and many feature films and commercials. Out of hours care is provided at Halton, staffed by our own vets and nurses, and we also have a branch surgery in Great Missenden. Although we are a little way up the hill, we feel very much part of the local community and love providing care for the animals of Wendover and the surrounding area. Here’s to the next fifty years! The mortgage market changed considerably in 2014. Schemes to help purchase your home were introduced, such as the Help To Buy Scheme. However tighter lending rules, making it potentially harder to get the mortgage you required to purchase your home, also came into force.

However the biggest change came in the Autumn Statement with the overhauling of Stamp Duty meaning that Stamp Duty for residential properties has been cut for 98% of homebuyers who pay for it. The new stamp duty rules now operate on a similar basis to income tax, whereby each percentage rate charged will only apply to the part of the property purchase price that fills within that tax band. (source HM Treasury, Autumn Statement, December 2014)

So for example, on a purchase price of £275000, previously the total stamp duty payable would have been 3%, which equals £8250.

Under the new rules, the total stamp duty payable on a purchase price of £275000 would be £3750 - A saving of £4500

One thing that hasn’t changed is the Bank of England Base Rate. At the time of writing, the Bank of England announced that the Bank of England Base Rate would stay at 0.5% for the 70th month in a row. This is also having a knock on effect in the residential rates being offered to homebuyers and remortgagers alike. With 2 year fixed rates available below 1.4%, and 5 year fixed rates available below 2.4%, now is a great time to review your current rate and see what saving you can make.

After what seems like an endless wait, it is great for the wellbeing of the village that the Hamnett Hayward advertising board has finally gone up at Brook House. This will be a really positive step forward for Wendover as it will tidy up an eyesore right in the centre of the village with the provision of three beautiful individual homes.

This story started way back in the 1950s when an ex RAF bomber pilot and former prisoner of war by the name of Ian Kirk bought the property. Ian lived there for fifty years, in which time the house steadily deteriorated. Ian never had the budget to maintain the house and it gradually fell into disrepair with poor Ian just living in a couple of rooms.

For anyone who knew Ian they would know he was stubborn and determined. No amount of persuasion was going to persuade him to sell his beloved Brook House and move into something smaller and more comfortable. As a trained architect he always had dreams of restoring his imposing but crumbling home, but sadly had not the funds to realise his vision.

As he said to me shortly before he passed away in 2009, “I’ve always been house rich and cash poor”.

A tragic accident on New Year’s Eve 2007 finally forced Ian’s hand. There had been several fires in the building over a period of time, and another fire caused a blaze that all but destroyed Brook House, finally rendering it uninhabitable.

By this time Ian was virtually blind and sadly, he moved into Winterton House. Brook House was now clearly beyond salvation, and it was with a heavy heart that Ian asked Hamnett Hayward to sell his home as he finally recognized that he could never return there.

We wanted to get Ian the best possible price, so with his blessing we decided to ask for sealed bids. As you can imagine, there was a huge amount of interest. We needed to not only obtain the best price but also find a buyer of the right experience and calibre to take on such a contentious project. The successful buyers, V & R Homes, have come up trumps in all departments.

After protracted and complicated negotiations, initially with AVDC Historic Buildings and then through the planning process, they have come up with a scheme that the village should be proud of. Plots 1 and 2 will emulate the original façade of Brook House and a substantial detached house is positioned at the rear of this 0.7 acre site. The original vehicle access will be utilised for all three. Prices will range from £850,000 to £1,700,000 and completion is expected to be Spring 2016. To register your interest please call Hamnett Hayward on 01296 625050.

Housing MarketWendover’s housing market has hit new highs following two years of sustained growth after the lows of the recession, swiftly followed by the initial body blow of the announcement of HS2. However, thanks to tireless campaigning the impact of the latter all but disappeared with the introduction of the green tunnel.

We are now starting to see the real effects of the stamp duty reforms of last December, which has put back on average +/- £4000 into the pockets of buyers in the middle sector of the market. In addition the increasingly competitive mortgage market is now delivering the lowest fixed rates mortgages ever seen, with headlines in the national papers now claiming “It’s the best time ever to take out a mortgage”. Few housing developments demonstrate this growth more clearly than ‘Barlow Grove’; released last October at prices from £274,950, all but three have now been sold or reserved off plan.

Interestingly the diversity of buyers has changed significantly over the last few years, which has been largely influenced by the re-development of the old Princess Mary Hospital site. With a large percentage of this development aimed at the first and second time buyers, it has brought new

and younger blood into the village. The longstanding attraction of out outstanding local schools is still a huge draw, as is the Chiltern Line which still offers one of the

best and most reliable commuter services in the country.

Brown & Merry first opened its doors in Wendover fifty years ago, in what is now Sally Turner Antiques, before moving to the recently refurbished offices in Woollerton House some ten years later.

We now offer the complete property service, incorporating Residential and Country House & Farm sales, Lettings, Surveying, Mortgage Services and the largest Land & New Homes operation in the Vale of Aylesbury.

Our experienced staff are on hand six days a week to guide you through the house buying process, providing practical and professional advice.

We can be found on Rightmove, Zoopla and Primelocation, still the three largest property portals in the country. Telephone 01296 624444. www.brownandmerry.co.uk.

Property Demand

Wendover News March 2015 Please mention Wendover News when responding to adverts22

Demand for properties in Wendover and the surrounding villages continues to grow, both within the community and from p e o p l e wishing to be part of this highly sought after area.

The mainline station, central school campus, health centre and excellent range of shops, restaurants and cafés make Wendover a sought after place to live for all ages and once here, people tend to move within the area depending on their needs and time of life.

We are therefore being approached more and more to value properties where vendors want to move but are concerned that the ideal property they are looking for

is not available. It is the chicken and egg scenario but demand is high so without

a buyer lined up on your own property, if your dream home becomes available, the chances are, you will probably miss out on the opportunity to secure it to a buyer who is either under offer or in rented accommodation.

The staff at Tim Russ and Company have been working extremely hard to help local buyers to put these chains together. Due to the lack of properties available in

the area we have found that prospective purchasers are prepared to be patient

and we have found that as long as buyers have been made aware of a possible delay and kept up to date with p r o g r e s s ,

generally, they are prepared to wait for the owner to find a property.

We have been able to secure buyers for several clients on this basis recently which has then allowed them to secure their dream home when it became available.

For further information please call Nicky Stottor or Tony Defriez at Tim Russ & Company on 01296 621177.

The group has been successful in agreeing a 21 year lease with Bucks County Council, who own the land where the Wendover Guide Hut is located. FoG is investigating the possibility of replacing the existing Guide Hut with a brick-built building and would value input from anyone that has experience of applying for grants for youth charities, fundraising or construction. a very successful New Year’s Party with fun games and dancing into the early hours with about 50% of the members attending.

The “short mat” season is now back and we have five teams involved. Two in the “two mat” and three in the “one mat”. These are league matches so all points count towards the final result. At the moment we are holding our own so let’s keep up the good work. Finally we also had one of our teams in the “short mat” John Robinson Competition which finished in January. They came third against strong competition. Well done.

We had a “Race Night “on Valentines Day and have a Game Night coming up in March, which we hope will be well attended. The Club’s Annual Pre Season Dinner, which is a four course meal with wine etc, will be held in April.

The outdoor bowling season starts in April and this will go on throughout the Summer with matches on both days at the weekend plus various mid week fixtures particularly

with the Ladies section, so we are looking forward to a full Summer ahead

The Club is open for “roll ups” on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons starting at 2.00pm, so if anyone wants to see what goes on please come along to the Club and you will be welcomed

March and the Letchworth Ale on 21 March.

In the meantime, I am finally able to confirm our summer programme which starts at 5:30 in the middle of Towersey on 1 May to dance in the summer – Yippee! This turns into a busy weekend as the Sunday sees us assisting Etcetera MM at Forte Hall and our usual 06:30 start on the bank holiday Monday with our Day of Dance. All of the details can be found on our website at:-www.whitchurchmorris.org\events

One invitation we’ve had is to assist with a re-enactment and provide suitable dances from the period of The War of the Roses c 1455-1487 and here is the difficulty. Although dancing was being performed during this period, it was mostly a Courtly dance and at this time was generally called Morisques. Alice Wetenhale of Bury St. Edmunds, a lady of substantial means provided in her will for her daughter “3 cups of silver engraved with morris dancers with a single lid for the ....” The year was 1458 and this was the first use of the modern spelling but the difficulty still

remains; what did they dance? Whilst there are references in fiction of the time and places morisque in the courts of northern France and true accounts from Rome where they danced for the Pope, no evidence of dance notation has been discovered. With the majority of the population literate, evidence comes from court, guild and church accounts such as in 1494 Henry VII’s court at Westminster “for playing of the mourice dance 40s” and from art such as the 3 silver cups. So what will we dance? Morris remains a dynamic and organic art form and changes with sides developing and adapting dances as they see fit. We will dance in the current styles of Cotswold and have a great time.

We’re always looking for new recruits so if you have an interest in the history of the people, music, dancing or just want to keep fit come and join us on a Tuesday night at the Wilstone village hall. You must be of the male gender and if possible, regardless of whatever age you are, you must bring your dad. All details can be found on our website.

Preparing For Your AppointmentDoctor and most nurse appointments are booked at 10 minutes intervals. Once you’ve got an appointment, please plan ahead to make sure that you cover everything you want to discuss.

• Before you see the doctor, write a list of problems, starting with the most important. List your symptoms and main concerns so that you don’t forget them.

• You are welcome to bring a friend or relative if you’re worried. Research shows that we forget half of what we’re told by the doctor when we’re stressed, so having someone else there with you can help.

• Be honest about what you think may be causing the problem, and don’t be embarrassed. Your doctor will have seen and heard it all before.

• Be clear about what you would like the doctor to do, such as refer you to a specialist or prescribe a different medication, and explain your reasons.

• Ask the doctor to repeat and explain anything you don’t understand. If there are words you don’t understand, ask

what they mean or get the doctor to write them down so that you can look them up later.

• If you and your GP decide you need to be referred for specialist tests or treatment, you usually have a right to choose which hospital you go to.

If you have a list of different problems it may not be possible for the doctor to deal with them all in one appointment, and he or she may ask you to make another appointment.

Before asking for an appointment please consider if you need to see a doctor or nurse at all. Advice on the treatment of many minor ailments can be obtained from local pharmacies, and if it is information you are looking for, visit the NHS choices website or patient.co.uk.

The Health Benefits of ExerciseThere is a growing body of evidence that exercise is effective at reducing our risk of getting a wide range of disorders including diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer, hip fracture and Alzheimer’s disease (dementia). Exercise is beneficial for all

ages and for some health problems, such as poor balance in older people, is the only effective remedy in most cases.

For more information about the benefits of exercise, local activities and other useful information please visit http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/healthy-living/physicalactivity/

England and Wales is one of the few legal jurisdictions where we have freedom to direct what should happen to our assets when we are no longer here. It is still somewhat surprising that the majority of the population die without leaving a valid Will.

There are many reasons people don’t make a Will – not least a sense of their own immortality. There are many common misconceptions - “It is too expensive”; “Everything I own will go automatically to my spouse or my children”; or “I don’t have enough to leave”. And it is something that can always be put off until another day – sadly that day sometimes passes and by then it can be too late.

When someone dies without making a will they are said to die intestate and their Estate will be distributed in accordance with the Inheritance & Trustee Powers Act 2014. These rules of distribution (despite being updated recently) are arbitrary - especially where there are no children of a union.

Intestacy can occur accidentally as well as when there is no Will. For instance, marriage/civil partnership revokes an earlier Will (unless the Will was made in contemplation of marriage or civil partnership). This can lead to unintentionally disinheriting children from a previous relationship, for example.

The intestacy rules do not make any provision for co-habitants. If you die without making a will, your estate will automatically pass to your surviving family (i.e. children, parents, siblings or even your estranged spouse). Your partner will have to make an application through the courts for provision from your Estate. A parent and child would need to have separate legal representation. This is costly and may take many months to resolve and could result in financial hardship for your loved ones in the meantime.

Even where an estate is modest the costs of administering an intestate estate are far higher than those incurred where the deceased left a Will. Failure to make a will could also lead to inheritance tax being payable unnecessarily.

The only way to ensure that your spouse, partner or relative inherits what you wish them to inherit is by making a Will. A simple Will may be all that is needed to ensure that your estate passes to those who matter and it will give lasting peace of mind.

Home made Wills should be avoided at all cost. The rules in relation to wills are complex and errors in drafting can easily lead to intestacy or disputes in the family. Instead, have your will drafted by a properly qualified professional. Members of STEP (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) (www.step.org) are specialists in their field and can give expert advice being able to advise in relation to simple and more complex estates including incorporation of trusts into Wills and protecting assets for future generations.

Play Parks for RAF & CommunityThree new play parks were opened in early February around the Tedder Road and Haddington Road areas of RAF Halton. One of the areas is a Multi Use Games Facility (MUGA) which is an interactive play area.

Funds were provided by the Station’s Local Investment Grant, (LIG), the Community Covenant and Section 106 Funding, which is a fund all developers pay into if they have built and sold homes. Station Youth Worker, Wilma Kingsbury, applied for the grant through Wendover Parish Council and the final total donated by the three charities was just over £480.000.

Wilma said: “Some of the land belonged to Annington Trust so we had to gain permission from them to use the space. Local people were surveyed to ascertain what sort of things they wanted to see and an open evening held for all to have their say. I quoted the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) in my funding bid, which gives all children the right ‘to rest and leisure; to engage in age appropriate play and recreational activities’, it states that play is a key element in children learning to appreciate, assess and take calculated risks, which is fundamental to the development of confidence and abilities in childhood. Children seek out opportunities for risk-taking and this is highlighted at RAF Halton by low level anti-social behaviours. It is therefore crucial that RAF Halton’s play provision responds with exciting and stimulating environments that balance controlled risks and encourage healthy lifestyles appropriately.”

Children from Halton Community Combined School attended the opening with head teacher Sue Scrimshaw, who is planning a

bulb planting event to fill in the borders of the play parks. Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns, who performed the opening ceremony, said: “The play park situated between the military and civilian housing areas reinforces the strong links we have with the local population here at RAF Halton.”

Explaining how resilient the play park equipment has to be, Trevor Lafferty, representing the installation contractor at the opening, said: “We’ve installed around forty installations around the UK military. The equipment itself is from Finland, where slow growing wood is used in the manufacture which will be good for 15 to 20 years.”

The LIG has provided a number of welfare initiatives for the Station such as furniture and electrical items for crew rooms, new seating areas for one of the recruit welfare facilities for graduating trainees and their parents, provision of furniture and furnishings for a common room within the Supply and Movement trainees’ barrack block and four large fans in the Burnett Gym.

Wendover CampusWith reference to the letter in Wendover

News February edition from Gary Regan, Head of Wendover Campus. I am encouraged to see the current head of Wendover Campus opening up the school to be part of the local community. We have already benefitted from this brilliant facility over the last year and a half through the school’s generosity in making available their playing field on a Saturday morning, to enable the boys from Wendover Junior FC Under 15’s to hold our weekly training sessions. This already demonstrates the school’s commitment to supporting the local community activities. Long may it continue.

“The Seasons of England”The imaginative idea of Barbara Courtenay-King brought together her husband, Bill McGillivray, and four other talented friends to perform in a very enjoyable fund raising concert in support of the Wendover Choral Society.

“The Seasons of England”, an evocative theme for a concert, transported the delighted audience from Spring through to Winter by way of the words and music of some of England’s best loved poets and composers.

The characteristics of the seasons were expressed by a miscellany of emotions. Some pieces encompassed pleasurable anticipation, some joyful celebrations, others wistful longing and haunting memories.

It always gladdens me to be part of the community spirit that strongly exists in Wendover and this concert, together with the plentiful supply of home-made cakes and tea, gave voice to this spirit in such a pleasurable way.

My hope is that these six talented, re-united friends will perform together again for us some time in the not too distant future.

Wendover Young People Arrange Collections for Chiltern Foodbank Over the last two months young people from Wendover organised collections of food within their schools to help feed local people in need.

Beth Humphries from Aylesbury High School, collected 63 kilos from her school - enough to feed seven people for three days.Tara Harding, Kieran Hall, Kayleigh Hampton

and Megan Davies (see photo) from John Colet S c h o o l , Wendover (class 11G) collected 84 kilos from their school. T h a t ’ s enough to feed ten people for three days.

13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK. Chiltern Foodbank is one of the four hundred Foodbanks across the country working with local people to help those in their community in need. Food is donated, collected and sorted by volunteers. Those in need are identified by front line professionals, such as GP’s and Social Workers, and referred to their local Foodbank distribution centre. Here more volunteers offer support and distribute emergency food for a limited period of three days.

Dave Worrall from Chiltern Foodbank said “These young people have made a real difference to their local community and made a real contribution to helping those most in need.”

Anyone interested in volunteering or donating food should visit www.chiltern.foodbank.org.uk.

Family SearchI lived in Wendover from when I was born until I was 30 on the Aylesbury Road. At the age of 16 I went to the registry office to get my birth certificate and Mr Uff from the village seemed reluctant to give it to me – I had to let him know I was already aware my parents were actually my biological grandparents (Norah and Ernest ‘Tiny’ Wells). I married Clive Young in 1969 and at the time, as the village was smaller, everyone knew each other. When we split up I moved away from the village but continued to come every week and visit my mother Norah until her death in 1995.

For years now I’ve been trying to find out any information about my biological father or a half sister who was born 2 years after me in October 1951 to my biological mother, Joyce Wells.

I believe my father worked at RAF Halton, possibly in the cookhouse, sometime between 1948 and 1950 (I was born November 1949). The name I’ve been given is Owen Gallagher and he had a best friend nicknamed Cornish who used to drink in The George at the clock tower.

If anyone has any information, however small it might seem, anything would be greatly appreciated. Replies to Wendover News, please.

There was very squashed standing room only, even in the entrance hall, at the Public Meeting about Brook House on Mon 16 Feb.

Kelvin Campbell explained how “rights of a community to build” applies to Brook House. The main purpose of the meeting was to check public support in order to go on trying to work out a solution. He showed

the current AVDC approved plans of the developer who claims interested buyers for one of the two houses that were to replace Brook House although at one time he seemed quite ready to sell the whole plot.

Kelvin described what could be achieved with an extension of the Clock Tower to give access to the garden by the stream and building for Parish Council offices, community use and other interests relating to Wendover. He was very careful to explain this was one possibility and more to be regarded as a trial to be explored further and nothing could go ahead without the support of the village hence the meeting.

William Avery spoke about his experience

with similar ideas. He discussed the method of raising funds in outline only and was quite sure the money could be found.

There followed a question session and the general mood was of interest. At the end I took a straw pole only 4 hands were raised against moving on and the rest of the room, at least 100, were for proceeding. A more formal referendum would be needed.

The meeting closed at 8.30pm and more conversations for quite a time, all seemed to be very positive particularly about improving the area around the clock tower and making it more significant to the village.

Local FaceMark Clay is just completing his first year as head of Fund Raising at PACE. He lives in Oxford and comes to Weston Turville every day to support a charity he believes in passionately. PACE is now expanding within our community and celebrates its silver jubilee, 25 years, in 2015, www.thepacecentre.org.

PACE started in 1990 when the parents of 4 severely disabled very young children organised three staff to administer conductive education for them in a barn in Dinton, near Aylesbury. This type of therapy had shown wonderful results in Hungary and the concept was now spreading to the UK. PACE is an acronym: “Positive Achievement (through) Conductive Education”. Since then, it has been the ambition to actively support children from as soon as possible after diagnosis in order to increase their mobility and capability as they grow. The greatest impact on developing improved motor function (and therefore life potential) can be achieved in

a child’s early years, when neuro-plasticity (the ability of neural pathways to adapt and change) is at its greatest.

Since their first move in 1997, PACE has been continuously expanding provision for children of all ages. In early 2014 a purpose-built Early Years and Independence Centre was opened on Wendover Road, Weston Turville with specialist provision for early years and training for independence, the

two ends of the age spectrum for PACE. Historic sites include Coventon Road, Riverside House and Booker Park School.

PACE has become a significant regional charity whose catchments area has extended beyond Aylesbury and Buckinghamshire to include all the bordering counties and even into North West London Boroughs.

The challenge that faces Mark and his team is to raise £1million per year to support the 100 children already benefitting from the provision and also to fund capital projects including phase 2 on the Aylesbury Road site with two more early years classrooms then phase 3 containing another classroom and offices. To support a recent event go to https://www.justgiving.com/100kmforPACE

PACE is now leading a national consortium of other providers called Action Cerebral Palsy to seek positive changes in public policy towards children with CP and their families.

Parish Council ElectionOn Thursday 7 May, elections will be held for the 13 seats on Wendover Parish Council.

Parish Councils have the power to make and influence decisions for the benefit of the people they serve. By being a Councillor you can see your community change for the better, as a result of decisions you have helped to make.

You will need to attend the Council meeting each month, be encouraged to join at least one Committee - Planning, Amenities, Staffing or Finance and spend time reading background information and meeting papers etc., but how much additional time you dedicate to Council business is up to you. All meetings are held in the evenings.

The District Council manages the elections, we expect to receive nomination packs in March, the deadline for delivery of nomination papers is 9th April. If you are interested in standing and want to find out more about the role of a Parish Councillor call or email - http://www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/election-2015/ we will notify you when packs are available.

Annual Parish MeetingReminder for your diary, 15 April will be the last APM before the election in May. Come to the Memorial Hall and see what we have achieved and our aims for the future.

New Speed Reduction Signs The Parish now has the Mobile Vehicle Activated Sign (MVAS) and it is at its first location. You may have noticed it on Tring Road, where it was reported to have visibly reduced speeding. The sign can be moved to different pre-approved sites and warns speeding drivers to slow down reinforcing the posted speed limit for the road. The unit can also collect data that can be used as evidence in persuading the Police to carry out enforcement on specific roads.

LED Street Light UpgradesWe are upgrading 120 street lights across the Parish replacing existing fittings with the latest light emitting diodes (LED). Lights which reduce energy consumption by up to two thirds and have a longer life span than traditional street lighting. The new LEDs produce a white light which allow objects and people to be identified more easily compared with the light from a traditional

lamp. The work is being carried out by our contractor SparkX who aim to cause as little disruption as possible.

Witchell Car ParkLast year the Parish Council’s Groundsmen rescued a number of cars parked on the area of grass/mud to the left of the entrance of the Witchell Car Park. Because of the need for extra spaces it has been decided to extend the car park to include this area. There are no plans to extend beyond the Club House. The project has gone out to tender and work is expected to start soon.

McCoy’s SignageAlthough we have no authority over signage and in this case no planning application was made, we have contacted AVDC, as the Planning Authority, and told them the Council does not believe the McCoy’s signage is in keeping with the rest of the Village. Please contact AVDC to make any comments.
