THE Department of Health will be distributing 167ambulances and forensic vehicles throughout theprovince to fast track service delivery.

The official hand over by Health MEC Dr PumzaDyantyi took place at Tsolo junction recently.Dyantyi said theDepartment ofHealth is planning

to respond to cases within nomore than 40 minutes.“We want to change the norm of patients having

towait for ambulances or forensic vehicles and limitit to a reaction time of no more than 40 minutes, while taking into consideration the challenges ofroads in our rural areas,” said MEC.She added that jobs have also been created

through this programme.“More than 500 staffmembers have been recruited

to manage these ambulances. To ensure that theseambulances are not subjected to any sort of abuse, tracking devices have been fitted,” she said.Tsolo resident, Sizwe Mlungwana, said he hoped

the additional ambulances would help ease the situ-ation as many people have actually died while wait-ing for ambulances.“Getting anambulancewasahassle, especially for

us in rural areas.“Many times you will be told that the ambulance

is still attending to another case in an area far fromyours. From there they come to you with the othersick patient in the ambulance who might die on theway to hospital,” said Mlungwana.Health spokesperson SizweKupelo said the ambu-

lances would improve the quality of emergencyservices in the provincewhich has been getting neg-ative publicity due to delays in the transfer of pa-tients as well as delayed response times to emergen-cies.

SENIORmembers of theMpondo Royal fam-ily have forbidden the appointment of Prin-cess Wezizwe Sigcau to succeed KingThandizulu Sigcau as they believe her to beagainst the Mpondo custom.

According to them she wasnever appointed as the right-ful successor and it was alsonot the prerogative of theQueen to choose a successor.“It is the Royal family that

is entrusted with the respon-sibility to identify a succes-sor, according to Mpondocustom. The Act on Tradi-tional Leadership in SA (Tra-ditional Leadership and Gov-ernance Act) also supportsthis,” said Princess StellaSigcau II a senior member ofthe Mpondo Royal family. The family also claims thatNkosi Zanozuko Sigcau hadnever had any legitimateclaim to the Kingship of amaMpondo, as hisfather Nkosi Zwelidumile’s claim that hewas entitled to Kingship, was invalid, be-cause he was a child born of ungeno – hisfather, King Nelson Sigcau, married PrinceMandlonke’s widow. She said King Thandizulu was uncustom-

ary and unconstitutionally deposed as King.He challenged this all the way to the consti-tutional court. He won posthumously in theConstitutional Court and his Kingship wasposthumously reinstated. The rightful suc-cessor of King Thandizulu – according to

Mpondo custom and next in line to succeedKing Thandizulu, who is the current cus-tomary head of the House of King Jongi-lizwe – is Nkosi Nzululwazi Sigcau, a SeniorTraditional Leader: Lwandlolubomvu Tra-ditional Council. He is the son of the brotherof King Thandizulu and grandson of son ofKing Botha and Queen Mamjoli Sigcau.

“Nkosi Nzululwazi’s fa-ther is the lateANCstalwartand liberation activist, Nko-si Ntsikayezwe Sigcau. There are absolutely noplans to appoint PrincessWezizwe as Queen. King-ship succession in theMpondo Kingdom as itstands does not allow prin-cesses and children born ofungeno to ascend to thethrone. The status quo re-mains. This has never evertaken place in the history ofKingship succession,” saidPrincess Sigcau. However, she said the

princesses had a significantand important role in the Kingdom, but rul-ing the Kingdom was not one of them.AmaMpondo had not expressed interest inchanging this custom.“This must not be mistaken for us having

anything against Nkosi Zanozuko and Prin-cessWezizwe. They are family, but we don’tsupport their claim to the throne and thewrong precedence they are trying to createon Kingship succession. As custodians ofamaKhosi custom, we are entrusted with aresponsibility to defend our custom againstdistortion,” concluded Stella.

SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE

THE King of AbaThembu, King BuyelekhayaDalindyebo, has declared that WinnieMadikizela-Mandela is according to customthe rightful head of the late Nelson RolihlahlaMandela’s homestead in Qunu.

This despite the divorce between her andthe late former statesman.

Buyelekhaya stated this during a mediaconference held in Bumbane Great Place inMthatha last week.

The King’s utterances follow a letter writ-ten by Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyer to one ofMandela’s estate executors, chief justice Dik-gang Moseneke, claiming that Nobandla –which is Madikizela-Mandela’s matrimonialname – should be the rightful head of Mande-la’s homestead in Qunu together with herchildren and grandchildren. During his ad-dress the king was accompanied by Madikize-la-Mandela’s lawyer, Mvuzo Notyesi.Dalindyebo

said that even though they were legally di-vorced, the status of the marriage remains

customary, because during their divorce theMandela family were never approached aboutthe matter. Therefore, according to the cus-tom, Nobandla is still Madiba’s wife unless le-gal changes were made during the divorce.

The first wife of Mandela, Evelyn, remar-ried and was buried with her new husbandmaking her not eligible as head of the home.Dalindyebo said, according to custom, evenEvelyn’s children belong to Nobandla.

“And mum Winnie will be buried atMadiba’s place because she is the head of thatfamily,” said the king.

Dalindyebo revealed that in 1989, Winnierequested a plot from him and after confer-ring with the elders, handed the plot to Win-nie. When tata Mandela was released fromprison, he visited the plot and was satisfiedwith it.

“So I support mum Winnie one hundredpercent. She is on track and she has no compe-tition,” said Dalindyebo.

He lambasted a comment of Chief Daludu-mo Mtirara who recently said WinnieMadikizela-Mandela was no longer the wifeof AbaThembu, claiming he was speaking on

THE King of AbaThembu BuyelekhayaDalindyebo, has stated publically that hefeels threatened following the revelationsthat he defaulted on the orders or conditionsof his appeal application.

Dalindyebo was addressing the media at

his residence, Bumbane Great Place, in Mt-hatha last week.

He got emotional during the media confer-ence while talking about his fear of being ar-rested.

He confirmed that the National Prosecut-ing Authority (NPA) had issued a warrantfor his arrest, but that the registrar in theMthatha High Court was refusing to sign it.

“Solemnly, I am shaking and feel threat-ened, because if I am arrested my bail will berevoked. Even though they said the defaultis on my side, I believe my appeal is in order.I made my application to the registrar in theEastern Cape, but they did not forward it tothe Supreme Court of Appeal.”

He said he is prepared to follow all meas-ures the court is instructing him to follow, be-

cause he does not want to be regarded asa defaulter. “There may be consequencesfor it being late, but it is not a default onmy side,” he said.

Dalindyebo was convicted of 10 counts ofculpable homicide, arson and kidnappingin 2009 and was sentenced with an optionto appeal, which he did against his convic-tions in the Supreme Court of Appeals.

AbaThembu king fears arrest

behalf of Royal family.“They are trying to drag ‘pumpkin politics’

into family matters, misleading people. Theytake advantage of this matter even thoughthey don’t understand the depth of it. They areconfusing the public. With regard to the issueof Nobandla. I’m ready to cooperate, becauseI know what went on from the beginning,”concluded King Buyelekhaya.

Madikizela-Mandela, who was the formerstatesman’s second wife for 38 years, was leftout of Mandela’s will, which was released inFebruary following his death on December 5,2013.

Madikizela-Mandela’s legal team is confi-dent that they would win the case and theywill be gathering all the facts from the Kingin support of their claim. Moseneke reported-ly acknowledged receipt of the letter and saidthe claim would be discussed tomorrow.

THE Engen KlevaKidz campaign, which edu-cates rural and township communities aboutthe safe handling and storage of paraffin, con-tinues to grow at a significant rate.

The initiative was launched six years ago,and by the end of 2013 had reached more than80 000 learners in close to 250 schools, locatedin areas where the household use of paraffinis widespread and paraffin-related accidentsare common.

“Over the next two years the campaign is

set to reach 90 000 learners aged 8 to 13 yearsin 300 schools,” said Tasneem Sulaiman-Bray,Engen’s General Manager: Corporate Affairs.

This year’s KlevaKidz campaign kicked offat Mankurwane, Kimberley, in the NorthernCape, followed by, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Na-tal, and ended off AT Palmerton Junior Prima-ry School in Lusikisiki on August 29.

As the name suggests, the KlevaKidz cam-paign delivers an empowering messagethrough edutainment about safe handling andstorage of paraffin, and what to do in an emer-gency.

It is aimed at children aged between 8 and

13 years old.“Over the years of involvementwe have be-

come aware that children of this age are oftenthe primary daytime caregivers of theiryounger brothers and sisters. It is with thisinmind thatwe target themwith themessageof safety,” said Sulaiman-Bray.

TheKlevaKidz production is an interactiveeducational stage drama that raises aware-ness of the dangers associated with handlingand storing paraffin and how to prevent acci-dents from taking place. The production usesa television quiz show environment as a vehi-cle for relaying the message, which is com-

bined with a jingle.“We have found edutainment to be a pow-

erful medium to stimulate children’s imagi-nation.

What is even more rewarding is to hearchildren of four years old still singing theparaffin safety jingle afterwards,” said Su-laiman-Bray.

Research commissioned by Engen in 2011,which benchmarked the before and after ofthe first KlevaKidz campaign, illustratedthat awareness improved from 24% to 90%andchanged thebehaviourofmore than80%of participants.

ASpart of its commitment tomakingbankingmore accessible to all in South Africa, Ned-bank launched its first “Branch of the Fu-ture” in Lusikisiki recently.

The launchof thenewbranch is yet anotherstep of many, in a nationwide roll-out follow-ing the opening of several branches in Gau-teng, KwaZuluNatal, theWesternCape,Mpu-malanga and Limpopo.

The “Branch of the Future” concept was in-troduced in 2012 as part of the bank’s client-centred approach, to continue delivering achoice of distinctive experiences and chan-nels of choice for its personal and businessbanking clients, enabled through state of theart technology.

Dave Schwegmann, Nedbank’s ManagingExecutive Branch Network at Nedbank, saidthe newbranchwould serve the local individ-ual andbusiness communityofLusikisiki, in-cluding Ingquza and surrounding areas, byproviding full banking services.

“We are delighted to bring the ‘Branch ofthe Future’ concept to the Eastern Cape, building on our presence in the province. Webelieve this will go a long way in enablinggreater financial inclusion and contributing

towards economic growth and social devel-opment in our society.”

Schwegmann pointed out that, while ac-cessibility to financial services remained akey driver, more andmore clientswere look-ing to do banking in aunique, convenient en-vironment, where all their needs are met.

“Listening to andunderstanding theneedsof our clients, are vital pillars in ensuringthat our strategy is agile enough to adapt tofast-changing client needs, in order to im-prove the client experience and efficiency ofthe branch network.

Certainly technological advancementswould continue to be a catalyst in enhancingthe experience; however, the role of a per-sonal touchby our staffwhobring the bank’svision to life in their daily interactions withnew and existing clients, is a key differentia-tor for Nedbank,” said Schwegmann.

Thiswas evidenced byNedbank’s achieve-ment of first prize for a second consecutiveyear in the Banking category at the annualSouthAfrican Service Awards, which recog-nise leaders in customer-centred serviceacross five industries (banking, short terminsurance, telecommunications, securityand travel).

In keeping with its values of giving backto communities,Nedbankconducted a seriesof consumer education and sustainabilityworkshops in Lusikisiki leading up to thelaunch, to share financial fitness principleswith the community and to create awarenessfor preserving the environment.

The bank also donated soccer kit to theKwaNompumelelo and Mavela Junior Sec-ondary Schools.

“Community and youth development is abusiness imperative in our quest to build Af-rica’s most admired bank. We look forwardto partnering with the community of Lusik-isiki, aimed at empowering people here tobuild financial fitness and achieve their as-pirations – to truly ‘Make Things Happen’,”Schwegmann concluded.
