THE President of the African Na-tional Congress (ANC) and the Re-public of South Africa, Jacob Zu-ma, has called on the members ofthe ANC to be more committed in
this organization in order to save the nation.
Zuma was addressing thousands of ANCsupporters at Idutywa Stadium on Sundayduring the ANC in the Eastern Cape’s 2014manifesto rally. He said there is a need to make the ANC
stronger and follow in the footsteps of TataNelson Mandela.Idutywa has become a political battle field
in canvassing for the forthcoming elections,as the United Democratic Movement (UDM)leader, Bantu Holomisa, had conducted adoor-to-door campaign here recently. The breakaway leader from the Congress of
the People (Cope), Mluleki George, had alsolaunched his new party in the area last year.
In addition, there is also political instabili-
ty in the ANC itself in the Mbhashe area.ANC councillors were expelled from the or-ganization and by-elections will take place in12 wards of Mbhashe.Zumamentioned the pain of losing a charis-
matic leader like Mandela causing unbeara-bly agony to the people of South Africa andthe nation as a whole.
He appealed to the people to vote for theANC because it was the only organizationwhich fought against the apartheid regime inthis country and brought freedom.“On these 20 years of freedom it is the only
organization that changed the lives of manypeople in this country. It has taken peopleaway from poverty, created job opportuni-ties, built houses, improved the economy ofthis country andoldpeoplehave receivedbet-ter old age grants than during the reigns ofapartheid. We are leading and we will lead,”said Zuma.He expressed his gratitudewith the cooper-
ation his party got from its members in allthese twenty years of freedom. He revealed that they want to get rid of the
bucket systembecause thepeople of SouthAf-rica do not deserve to use buckets for toilets.
He also mentioned that as governmentthey want to centralize the issue of tendersbecause it destroys the nation. “We have al-ready established a tender board to deal withthe tenders,” said the president. He warned members of the ANC who get
involved inwrong-doings to resign before theorganization take further steps. The provincial chairman of the ANC, Pu-
mulo Masualle, vowed that they would workhard in the province to ensure that they getan outright majority in the forthcoming elec-tions.

THE Bizana community and passing motor-ists are taking full advantage of the new shop-ping centre in the Seaview locality.
AndiswaNdungane, a resident of the Seav-iew locality, said that it was a great reliefthat a stationery shop was opened at theshopping centre near the filling station, justin time for the the start of the new schoolyear.“The stationery shop is very convenient for
us as communitymembers. It saved us travel-ling money to go to town and buy stationeryfor our children,” added Ndungane. This filling station is a sister to the petrol
station which is situated at Magusheni andwas opened towards the end of last year. The owner, Ayanda Notshweleka, said its
main purpose is to bring services to the ruralareas by serving the passing motorists andtrucks and to create jobs within the rural are-as.
Mcebisi Khuzwayo, a motorist who wasfilling up at the Yaka Petroleum station onhis way to Durban, said the filling stationwas very useful to drivers using the R61route.“They can now travel with ease, knowing
that theywon’t need to go to crowded garagesin town to fill their tanks.“The filling station in Seaview helps a lot
and the service so far has been excellent,”Khuzwayo added. It looks as if Notshweleka’s vision of help-
ing the community is working. Many peoplehave confirmed that the filling station andthe shopping centre will change people’slives for the better, as it will make thingseasier and also save people a lot of transportmoney.Members of the Seaview community con-
cluded that they were hoping that more peo-ple would be employed when other shops inthe centre are up and running.

THE Alfred Nzo District (AND) Departmentof Education (DoE) is enthusiastic aboutmaking a difference in terms of educationwhile working together with the resourcingand funding sector.
This is so that the Eastern Cape (EC) cancarry on experiencing exponential growth, especially in funding for rural areas.
Statistics show that government expendi-ture investments in the resourcing and fund-ing sector have progressively grown from2009 - 2013 to R173 billion, proving that theSouth African economy is increasing slowlybut surely.Parents around the Alfred Nzo District
think that the government plays a huge partin making sure that pupils all over EC geteverything they need in terms of stationery, transport and nutritional programmes each
year so that pupils can also give back to thegovernment by achieving a good pass rate.Nopasika Nkwelo, who is a parent, said
what makes it hard for school pupils was thefact that some have to study in a very bad en-vironment. Government transport in mostareas is not available, and children are oftenforced to travel the long distances on foot.“Our children try very hard and parents
also help out by making their children go toschool. Government should also go all out in
motivating these children for education asthat is the only thing that is going to getmostpeople out of poverty,” added Nkwelo. The EC Department of Education (DoE)
said they have a lot planned this year interms of improving the nutrition system. The spokesperson for the DoE, Mali Mnti-
ma, said they would be up and about makingsure that funding goes to the right people forEC schools to ensure that it gets to theschools.

THENtabankulu community seems to be feel-ing positive again about service delivery intheir area after the appoinment of their newmayor, Councillor Vusi Mgoduka.
The former mayor of the Ntabankulu mu-nicipality, ZukoLwana, was recusedafter peo-ple got fed up with him, claiming that there
was no service delivery in their small town. One of the residents, Nomanesi Mpetshwa,
from Dumsi locality in Ntabankulu, said thatever since the new mayor was appointed, there was hope that positive change wouldcome to the town.“Last year, the mayor implemented pro-
grammes where he gave away school uni-forms and groceries to the needy. That showsthat he has a heart for people and not for keep-
ing all the money to himself,” added Mpet-shwa.Ndoda Cembi, from Ncumbe locality also
situated inNtabankulu, saidhealsohadhopesof great achievements that the municipalitywould accomplish in their town.“People laugh at our little town but we will
seewhowill be laughing ina fewyears to comebecause just like Bizana we are slowly butsurely going to be one of the places to be,” said
Cembi.CouncillorMgodukasaid that therewas still
more development to come thanks tohis excel-lent team.“With the help of the community, we as the
Ntabankulu Local Municipality, will achievea lot for our small town and we will put it inthe map for all the good reasons.”

Is BafanaBafana ‘abunchof losers’?
Aphiwe Matundu: The Minister’s statement wasout of anger and I totally support thatstatement because the South African teamalways lets us down.
; Sibulele Khuz-wayo: The statementwas a bit harsh, as Ibelieve that no onecan do a better jobwhen the wholecountry is dependingon good results; it isjust too muchpressure.
< AyandaKhumalo: TheMinister shouldstop picking onthe national teambecause they aretrying the bestthat they can, butthe other teamsare stronger thanthem.
Anga Dinwayo: The Minister was right to saythat to Bafana Bafana because it is just like aparent shouting at his or her children to bebetter and make the family proud. PHO-TOS:YANDISA DLEMBULA

Tuck intoTuck into CoolCactusPearsCoolCactusPearsPalm tree green, beach sand white, sizzlinghot pink and sunset orange... these are theshades of summer. They’re also the vibrantcolours of one of the season’s most delectablesweet treats: crisp, cool cactus pears, whichare in season right now.
There are a variety of fruits to choose fromto suit every taste, including Morado, the lo-cal favourite with its delicate white flesh andsubtle, fresh taste; Gymno with its deep suns-hine yellow/orange flesh and wild sweet fla-vour; the ruby red/pink Algerian, with itscrimson flesh and floral, exotic notes and theSkinners Court, a large, green fruit which canturn red towards the end of the season but re-tains its light green sweet flesh.
This riot of gorgeous colours means cac-tus pears make for a wonderful show onsummertime plates, especially in alfresco settings. Think salads, sal-sas, sauces and syrups with ahoney sweet kick and youget an idea of the ver-
satility of these compact little gems with thetantalising taste.
Although best served chilled, cool cactuspears are equally at home in savoury dishesas they are in sweet desserts.
Of course they can also be simply enjoyedas they are, peeled and eaten whole or sliced.Contrary to what many people think, peelinga cactus pear – also known as a prickly pear– is not a thorny issue. These ready-to-eat,convenient fruits come with most of their spi-nes removed; all you need to do is remove theskin with a paring knife and a fork and you’reready to tuck into a taste of summer; itcouldn’t be easier!
For years some cultures have claimed thecactus pear offers medicinal benefits. In
traditional Mexican folk medicine, forexample, it was used to treat diabetes.
Other cultures have used the fruitsto treat burns, stomach ailments,
cuts and bruises, sunburn andwindburn, constipation and
cold symptoms, and to reduceinflammation and choleste-
rol levels. While it remains to be
seen if these traditionalhealth claims can besubstantiated, what we
do now know is that cactuspears are naturally free from
fat; are a source of fibre, biotin, theantioxidant vitamin C and manganese;
and are a great addition to any diet.Homegrown on South African soil, cactus
pears are available throughout summer andthe start of autumn, with a season that spansfrom November to the end of May. They’re re-adily available during this time and easy tofind at fruit markets across the country.

AT the end of last year Nissan launched newmodels in its Almera and Sentra range withthe two basically switching places in the Jap-anese manufacturer’s range of models.
The redesignedAlmera is now competing inthe smaller B-segment of the market for com-pact family carswhile the newSentra takes onthe hotly contested C-segment sedan marketfilling a gap inNissan’s line-up in the country. This makes it a competitor of models such
as the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, ToyotaCorolla, Ford Focus and VW Golf and Hy-undai Elantra.According to the people at Nissan, the new
Nissan Sentra has been designed around keyconsumer requirements for efficiency, spacemaximisation, performance and features –along with high build quality and quietness. In addition it is an economical sedan, with-
out looking and feeling like an economy car.
ExteriorThe new, 13th generation Sentra has a so-
phisticated and stylish look that ismore clas-sical sedan than head-turning. The test vehi-cle was a dark red metallic colour - not myfavourite colour on a car, but it certainly didlook good on the Sentra with its roundedbody lines. My favourite part of the car asfar as looks are concerned - is its rear.
InteriorThe stylishness continues to the interior
which has a very luxurious look and feel. Itis spacious and decorated with soft materi-als, adding to the feel. The front seats are comfortable and there
is ample legroom for the backseat passen-gers. A secret hatch gives access to the bootfrom the rear seats. There are steering wheel controls for the
four-speaker CD audio system. All the con-trols are conveniently placed and easy to use.The Sentra features a high level of stand-
ard equipment. The list includes the alloy
wheels, LED accent halogen head- and taillight elements, chrome detailing, remotecentral locking, multi-function tilt and tel-escopic steering wheel, the multi-info tripcomputer, smart LED interior map lights,a radio/CD audio system with MP3, USB/iPod and aux integration, Bluetooth forhands-free cellphone use and audio stream-ing, four speakers, front and rear armrests, folding rear seats, four cup holdersand a bottle holder in each door, air condi-tioning, electric windows all-round withone-touch up and down for the driver, elec-tric mirror adjustment and auto-lockingdoors.
RideThe Sentra is powered by a 1.6 litre four-
cylinder engine. The difference in themodelsis found in the transmission and buyers canchoose between a five-speedmanual or a CVTtransmission. According to Nissan, the CVTis lighter on feel with a consumption of justunder 7 litre per 100km.The ridewas nice and smooth, the handling
quite good and it dealt pleasantly with all thespeed bumps on my daily route. You will notreally feel any g-force travelling or overtak-ing in this car, but it is not meant to impresswith power. It will get you to your destination comforta-

bly, while looking good and not worrying toomuch about the dent in the bank balance ithas made.SafetySafety features include ABS brakes as well
as six airbags.PriceThe C-segment is a very competitive one
but its roominess and comfort will defi-nitely count for it among sedan buyerswho are looking for a reliable, economicalfamily car that does not look like an econo-my car. The Sentra with manual transmis-sion costs R230 900, while the CVT modelis priced at R253 600.

THE Bizana Kyokushin Karate Club, whichwas formed by Bizana youth to help otheryoungsters with self-defence, is pleasedwiththe number of members they recruited overthe festive season.
Zukile Nala, who was speaking on behalfof the club, said the teamwas founded in 2002and had been training ever since. Thenumber of people who were in the karateclub was, however, a disappointment forsome of the members as they felt more peo-ple should be investing in karate as it helpswith fitness and with protecting them-selves.
Nala said last year their prayers were an-swered as young people attended every dayduring the holidays, showing interest in thesport. He added that Karate helps one mentally
and physically. “We are encouraging peopleto join us every weekday at the Lovelifesports ground after work and school.”“We hope that our new members who had
gone back to school, will keep fit and alwaysremember our teachingswherever they are,”said Nala.Andiswa Maswane from Bizana said that
she would try to go to the karate practicesafter work as she really wants to kill twobirds with one stone by exercising and alsolearning self-defence tricks.
