THE learners at Majali TechnicalSchool in Majola Port St Johns vowedthat they would make that area uncon-trollable and close down all the schoolsin the area if the department of educa-tion does not respond to their de-mands

Learners of the school allegedly setfire to the school last Tuesday night(April 12) Onlyone classroom and staffroom is left of the school It is allegedthat they also held hostage an educa-tion official and her delegation whowas at the school to address thelearners

Learners embarked on a violentstrike on Monday after they were dis-satisfiedoveravaguereport-backfrommembers of the schoolrsquos governingbody who visited Bhisho to inquireabout the repairing of school after itwasblownawaybywindonNovember2 2015

It is said that the SGB was unableto give a clear explanation after theyreceived no attention from the depart-ment when they went to complainabout the delay of installing prefab

classrooms at the schoolLearners of the school embarked on

a strike demanding that the depart-ment of education build the prefabs forwhich material was delivered to theschool last November after the schoolswas damaged by wind during a storm

The leader of the learners Mziwe-khaya Qoyi said they are battling be-cause they donrsquot have classrooms andit seems as if the department has dis-carded them because there was no ac-tion to repair the storm damage ldquoWeare studying in roofless classroomswhich compels us to sometimes stay athome when it is raining

ldquoThatrsquos why we decided to embarkon the strike because it seems as if youneed to act before this governmenttake consideration of what you want-ed You have to toyi toyirdquo he said

Qoyi said they have already closedsome schools in the area and they willcontinue to close all the schools in thearea of Majola

The SGB Vice Chairperson Nkosina-thi Majali said they had exhausted alltheir powers as SGB trying to stop

what was happening at the school Butall has been in vain because the de-partment never responded to their ap-peal of adding prefabs to the school

Instead the department deliveredold prefabs from another school andthey did not erect them stating that itneeded the order form to be signed be-fore the contractor can start the jobrdquosaid Majali

He confirmed that they had visitedthe education department in Bhishoseveral times trying to sort this prob-lem out but they had not received anyhelp

ldquoWe have been trying to stoplearners from embarking on a strikebut now it is out of our handsrdquo he said
