THE South African Police Services (SAPS) metwith young people of the Fleyi andMdumazulu lo-calities in Lusikisiki where the incidence of vio-lence are very high, owing to the high unemploy-ment rate.

The meeting was held to raise awareness on thedangers of being on the wrong side of the law.Concerned parents called on the SAPS to inter-

vene as the young people of these two localitieswere fighting, raping and killing each other, be-cause they had nothing else to do to keep thembusy.Speaking on behalf of parents, AyandaVundisa,

said more government departments should inter-vene and educate children on the consequences ofunlawful acts.“We need young people that will better them-

selves towards a better future and not destroytheir dreams. I’m sure some of them have bigdreams that they can achieve if they are motivat-ed.”The parents of Fleyi and Mdumazulu said they

had tried everything as parents to discourage vio-lence in their communities, but it never workedbecause the youth was vulnerable which resultedin themending up in shebeens drinking anddoingdrugs.SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mduduzi Godlwa-

na, said the purpose of the event was to identifyweaknesseswithin the community and to comeupwith possible solutions suggested by the youngpeople.“We encouraged the youth to take part in youth

activities like sport, music andother engagementsthat will keep them busy while getting an educa-tion and looking for jobs,” added Captain Godlwa-na. The day was concluded with a prayer by pas-tors and bishops who prayed for a better futurefor these two communities.

THE MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cul-ture, Xoliswa Tom, called on the community toassist with putting an end to damage and theftto Heritage sites donated for educational pur-poses.

Tom was prompted by a burglary that tookplace at the East London Museum in the earlyhours of April 10, when thieves gained entry in-to the museum by damaging the palisade fenc-ing and breaking a window.

“We need to stand together in protecting ourheritage assets and preserve the history of ourland for our children and our grandchildren toappreciate. Let us stop the harmful damage toour precious artefacts and put an end to non-

sensical crime,” said the MEC.Tom said this should raise awareness to

small towns aswell, to take care of their gov-ernment properties including newly openedlibraries and other sites that are there tohelp members of the community to gainknowledge. Akhona Dikiso from Flagstaffsaid that the MEC should not worry aboutthe information centres and heritage sitessituated in small towns, because small towncommunities know how to work together toprotect things that would help their chil-dren gain knowledge.

“I wish that all communities would seethe importance of theMEC’s message, sincethese sites are not there tomake the govern-ment look good, but to assist with educatingour children,” concluded Dikiso.

THE King of the AbaThembu, BuyelekhayaDalindyebo, has announced that he had giventhe controversial land situated between theHoliday Inn and the Ultra City at Mthatha tothe Democratic Alliance (DA) to use for itsown benefit.

The controversial King made this an-nouncement during a DA rally held at theWalter Sisulu University’s Zamukulungisacampus last week. The King recently joinedthe DA and lashed out at the ANC and Presi-dent JacobZuma forneglecting theAbaThem-bu Tribe and its grievances.

Dalindyebo said no one could claim thatland, since it belonged to him and him alone.

“I am giving that land to the DA to dowhat-ever they want with it, because I can see thethieves of the ANC want to steal it. That landbelongs to me. I see Tata’s billboards (refer-ring to the late tata Nelson Mandela) erectedthere. I need them to remove those boards assoon as possible from my land,” said KingDalindyebo.

The DA leader who was present during theannouncement welcomed the gift from theking. “I thank you,” whispered Helen Zille, hugging the King after the announcement.

This piece of land has in the past few yearscaused tension between the communities ofZimbane, (lead by Chieftainancy of NosizweMaxhwele), KwaLindile (led by Nkosi Ntabo-zukoNjemla) and the King Sabatha Dalindye-bo Municipality. As a result the two commu-

nities took the legal route. The constitutionalcourt ruled in favour of the communities in2013 and the municipality had to stop all in-tended development for which they had al-ready given the go ahead.

The two communities went to court afterthe announcement and the sod turning by themunicipality for a huge construction project, including a casino. At the time, the licensingprocesses regarding the casino had alreadybeen finalised. Court processes compelled themulti-million rand project to come to a haltand the landhasbeendeserted ever since. Thecommunities took legal action since they be-lieved that some portions of the land belongedto both communities.

Responding to the King’s announcement,Nkosi Njemla said it was just hearsay, as the

Kingnever told them that hewas going to givethe land to DA. He said the two communitiesand the municipality came together andformed a joint venture to develop the land andthey had also engaged the department of LandAffairs in their process to pursue develop-ment on the land. According to him the proc-ess is in an advanced stage and that construc-tion was expected to start soon.

The DA’s leader in the Eastern Cape, AtholTrollip, said he had not yet met with the Kingwith regard to the land. “We are still goingto contact our legal team to advise us regard-ing the land. We don’t know anything aboutthe history of the land and the joint ventureformedby themunicipality and the communi-ty.” Trollip said they would look into themat-ter after the elections.

THEDepartment of Human Settlement (DHS)representatives visited the people of Chitwacommunity in Mount Ayliff recently in an ef-fort to resolve problems facing the communi-ty regarding the issuing of RDP houses.

In a story that appeared in Express lastweek, the community was complaining about

having sleepless nights because of a war overRDP houses. When the MEC for Human Settlements,

Safety and Liaisons, Helen Sauls-August, vis-ited Ntabankulu last week she was madeaware of the problem by angry communitymembers and she promised to provide a fastintervention to resolve the matter.Phumzile Mbotho from the DHS who visit-

ed the community said they had a list of the

rightful owners of the houseswhichwould fixthe problem. People were told to go and lookfor their names on the list. Those who were not on the list were told to

leave immediately, before the police werecalled to intervene.“We also investigated complaints where we

saw that the cause of havoc in Mount Ayliffwas the fact that people were illegally sellingand renting out their RDP houses,” he added.

The community was also given a chance toask questions and raise their concerns andwere told to apply for RDP houses at their lo-cal DHS before May 14 if they had not yet ap-plied.One of the Chitwa residents, DuduzileMab-

indisa, thanked the quick response by theMEC’s office which ensured that they wouldnow live in peace with the rightful owners intheir homes.
