AmongthevictimswerefiveRhodesUniversi-ty women students. At time of going to print apolice task force, which was established to hunt
down the suspects, were still searching for someof the suspects. One of the suspects (28) were in-jured in crossfire with police who arrived at thescene after a panic button was activated.
According to Neil Clayton of Amapondo Back-packers, a number of the backpacker guests, to-gether with some local visitors, were occupyingthe bar and restaurant area. Some of the guestswere in their rooms. There were approximately60 people on site.
“At about 11pm, eight armed robbers enteredthe property on foot and quickly disbursedthroughout the property to gather all the guestsinto one central location at the bar. It was laterdiscovered that only one robber had a live fire-arm,whilst theresthadfakeguns,”saidClayton.
According to Clayton, the robbers demandedcash, car keys, phones, laptops, and wallets. They did manage to steal a number of phones aswell as cash from the guests and the Amapondo
staff. They also stole alcohol, cigarettes, cash, and laptops.
According to Police spokesman in the Port StJohns cluster, Captain Mduduzi Godlwana, someonemanagedtoactivateapanicbuttonandwhen the police arrived on the scene they foundthe suspects still on the premises.

Capt. Godlwana said the police also discov-ered a 9 mm pistol on the scene.
“Thus far, the police have apprehended two ofthe robbers, located several phones, and are cur-rently following up on several important leads,”said Clayton.
Clayton said Amapondo has sought traumacounselling services for all the staff involved.
“All guests were helped to contact their fami-lies, friends, and in some cases their country’sembassies. Amapondo also offered money tosome guests for onward travel expenses, and ar-ranged free accommodation in a ‘safe house’ atthe owner’s parent’s home in East London.Manyguestshavetravelledtherewheretheyarestaying for a few days with peace and quiet andhome cooked meals, internet access, and lots ofsupport whilst they recover.”
Clayton said this incident was an isolatedevent, and is not something common to the area.“Port St Johns is a safe place, and in a recentonline newspaper publication, it was even de-scribed as SA’s third safest place to live,” saidClayton. He said the owners at Amapondo are“utterly shocked to have had this happen, andare saddened about how this could affect the rep-utation of their business and also Port St Johnsas a travel destination”.
Amapondo now plans to increase its securitylevels by employing additional security staff, putting up a large fence and gate, installingCCTV cameras, and installing an alarm systemwith panic buttons.

AMAN from Beaufort West, who is resid-ing in Cape Town, is blaming MthathaCentral Police Station Officers for failingto givehim information about hismissingfirearm.
Simphiwe Ntlabathi claims that hisfirearm has been kept by this Police Sta-tion since 2005. He said that the firearmhad belonged to his uncle (Velile Ngxawe-ni)whopassedaway.Ntlabathi thenalleg-edly asked Ngxaweni’s wife to give himthe firearm, since she said she did notwant it.“My aunt refused to give it to me, be-
cause I did not have a firearm licence atthe time. She then took it to Mthatha Cen-tral Police Station,” said Ntlabathi. He said he got his licence in 2011 after
his aunt had also passed away. When hewent to the police station to collect thefirearm, he was asked for a SAP 13 NU,which he brought to the police station. That was when he was told that his fire-arm had been taken by the National TaskForce to Pretoria.“But the problemwas that there was no
name, persal number and rank of the po-liceman or woman who took the firearmwhich was registered in the occurrencebook. That iswhy I amsaying this firearmis missing.”Ntlabathi said he had tried several
times to findhelp.Hehad evenphoned theprovincial office to ask for help. They toldhim that according to their records thefirearm was registered in his name.He was advised to open a case, but he
said the case was not being investigated. He said hewasworried about his firearm, because if something happened, he couldbe in trouble because it is registered inhisname.“I can end up in jail because of it. I am
appealing to anyone who can advise meon which steps to take now to please as-
sist. I had tried all the offices which Ithought would have been able to help.”Police Spokesperson for the Mthatha
Cluster, Warrant Officer Denoe Koena, saidNtlabathimust goand report themat-ter to the branch commander if he feelsthat his case is not being investigatedproperly.“He followed the right path by getting
a licence and that the gunwas taken to thepolice for safety. But if it is now missing,he must report it to the police,” said Koe-na.She said they appeal to the community
to hand guns in to the police if the ownerhas passed away.

weeks ago, on October 7, caused angeramongst community members, particularlythe young people. They demanded that the family of the 18-

locality commenced a massive hunt for the
mother of the baby. All the women in the lo-cality were called to ameeting and eachwom-an was milked and and their private parts in-spected.During that inspection an 18-year-old wom-

A MAN who is herding Mandela’s cat-tle at Qunu farm near Mthatha deniedthat the cattle who died during recentmonths were neglected.
MgcineniWisemanQingana said thecattle were not neglected because heand fellow herdsmen were looking af-ter them and they also have a supervi-sor to oversee the whole process on thefarms in Qunu and Ncise. Both farmsbelong to the late statesman, NelsonMandela. The man, who has been working on
Mandela’s farmsince 2000, saidheusedto share jokes with Tata Mandela
whilst they were on the farm, inspect-ing his livestock with him.He described him as somebody who
loved livestockwholeheartedly.Qinga-na’s utterances follow reports that Nel-son Mandela’s cattle at Qunu farm aredying from neglect. He revealed that the only thing that
hampers them was the late delivery ofthe feed to the farm. Delivery some-times takesmonths. Due to grass beingdry in winter, they depended on lu-cerne for feed.He said the lucerne supply ran out
some months ago and was only deliv-ered on Tuesday, October 21. “About200 bales were delivered. If it was doneaccording tomywishes, lucernewould
always be available at the farm be-cause there is no grass and the size ofthe farm is not enough for somany cat-tle.”Qingana confirmed that 10 cattle
died this year and he believed that itwas because of hunger and draught. Hesaid he and the other herd boy reportedeverything to the supervisor who is al-ways at the farm.He said the supervisor reports to the
manager, namedMimi, who is based inGauteng and Mimi reports to Makazi-we the eldest daughter of Mandela. The Qunu farm now has 1 790 cattle
plus many calves. Attempts to get holdof the supervisor, called Siya, as wellas Makaziwe, were fruitless.

NONHLANHLA Ndziba had a problem withheadaches and she decided to go to the Gate-way Clinic where she was attended to andgiven tablets to take at home.
She left satisfied with the service she hadreceived, but little did she know that she hadbeen given tablets that would make her sick. When she got home she drank the tablets,
as instructed, on September 9, 10 and 11. OnSeptember 11 she started bleeding throughher nose and the headache was not gettingbetter and she decided to call her husband toreturn since he was on leave and she wasalone with her child at home.“Every time I am sick I go to the clinic and
am given medication, which after using it Iget better. But this time instead of getting bet-
ter I became worse since my stomach waspaining.“When we checked the tablets that were
given to me at the clinic we discovered thatone batch had expired in June 2014. I wentback to the clinic to show them that they hadgiven me an expired batch.”She said the person who gave her the tab-
lets instead of apologizing took back the tab-lets and gave her the other batch and neverapologized - instead shouted at her.She decided to keep quiet and apologised
to her before she went to the police stationto lay a complaint but not to open a charge. The police advised her to go back to the
clinic and ask to see the manager and on thatday the manager was in a meeting. She went to the doctor since her stomach
pains were getting severe and the doctor ad-vised her to go and ask for the expired batch
of tablets from the clinic so that he could seewhat type and how he can treat her. The staffmember at the clinic told her to go and tellthe doctor to come to her.The management of the clinic told her that
if the tablets had expired they arenot danger-ous within the period of six months.“We would like you to give us a chance to
speak to her and ask her to apologise to you.If you lay a charge it would not affect her on-ly but the whole department will be affect-ed,” said one of the managers of the clinicin a recordedmessage. They also agreed thatthe staff member was at fault. The spokesperson for the Department of
Health, Sizwe Kupelo, said there is a toll freenumber which is 0800032364 that is availablefor 24 hours where people can lodge theircomplaints.Kupelo said the affected person needs to
phone this toll free number and complainabout the shouting and the alleged expiredmedication that was given to her so that thematter could be investigated to establish thefacts.
