AS the world panics over the Ebola outbreak,West Africans are reportedly fleeing their coun-tries in a bid to outrun the virus – someevenhead-ed overland for South Africa.

According to the Sunday Independent, thiscould place South Africa at considerable risk.Johannesburg-based members of the immi-

grant communities from Liberia, Sierra Leoneand Guinea, told the newspaper that there is aconsiderable number of people attempting toreach SA, most trying to reach it overland – a 5000km trek.Oneman said he alone knew of at least five peo-

ple who were on their way.The newspaper reports that it would just take

one carrier to change the situation in SA – partic-ularly in a community that is largely housed inthe densely populated city centre of Johannes-burg – an ideal breeding ground for a communica-ble virus such as Ebola. In addition, these often undocumented mi-

grants also enter the country through the porousborder at Beitbridge in northern Limpopo – anentry point that has no measures such as temper-ature radars in place to check visitors who couldbe carriers.

However, Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gi-gaba and Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledihave stated that although caution needs to be ex-ercised, it cannot be done at the expense of fuel-ling xenophobia.Motsoaledi said that he feels SA is too far away

for most people to reach by land and if they werecarrying the disease, the chances are they wouldnotmake it to the border alive, reported the news-paper.Meanwhile, as reported by News24 on Satur-

day, the UN special envoy on Ebola says thenumber of cases is probably doubling every threeto four weeks and the response needs to be 20times greater than itwas at the beginning of Octo-ber.David Nabarro warned the UN General Assem-

bly on Friday that without the mass mobilisationof the world to support the affected countries inWest Africa, “it will be impossible to get this dis-ease quickly under control, and the world willhave to live with the Ebola virus forever.”Nabarro said the UN knows what needs to be

done to catch up to and overtake Ebola’s rapidadvance “and together we’re going to do it.“And our commitment to all of you is to achieve

it within a matter of months – a few months,” hesaid.More than 4 000 people have died of the disease

since the start of the outbreak, the worst to date.Last week, News24 reported that although no

cases of Ebola have been reported in South Afri-ca, the country is ready for a possible outbreak.“It’s not that we are just starting now. We are

just ramping up efforts to fight the virus thatstarted in December,” said Motsoaledi.Aministerial advisory committee onEbola had

been appointed comprising private healthcareprofessionals.Motsoaledi said Cabinet had approved a budget

of R32.5million to support Ebola preparednessand response activities.South Africa started in March and strength-

ened efforts at major airports, especially the Lan-seria and OR Tambo International airports in Jo-hannesburg.“Private health care practitioners were also

put on alert,” he said. They were given a 24-hour number to contact

the National Institute of Communicable Diseasesif they encountered a patient who possibly hadEbola.Officials at ports of entry had been trained to

deal with the disease.According to the latest toll from the World

Health Organisation, the deadly virus has killed3 439 people in West Africa since the start of theyear. – www.news24.com

TWO young Tsolo boys told Express abouttheir horror experience when a frienddrowned right in front of their eyes in theMt-hatha River on Wednesday, last week.

Yanga Mpande (13) said his cousin, AfikaMpande (16), had tried to swim across theMt-hatha river nearNcambeleVillage shortly af-ter he and another friend, Lunga, made itacross.Yanga described Afika, who was a Grade

6 pupil at Mpindweni Junior SecondarySchool, as his swimming and fishingmentor.“It was our first time to swim across the

river, so when Lunga and I managed to reachthe other side, Afika took off his clothes andsaidhe couldnot be outdonebyus. “Butwhenhe was in the middle of the river (about 3mdeep), he struggled,” said Yanga. He raised his head and shouted Lunga’s

name three times.“When his head came up for the fourth

time, he didn’t speak and his eyes had turnedred,” he said, adding that Afika then disap-peared beneath the surface. Yanga said Lun-ga had dived into the river to try to save Afi-ka, but it was too late.Afika’s distraught grandmother Nozukile

Mpande gathered with neighbours and fami-ly at their home inMpindweni Village, about6km away. South African Police ServicesCradock K9 rescue unit member CaptainJacques Swartz and a colleague were joinedbypolice from theTsoloRural Safety andSec-tor Policing units 24 hours later.Working with a sniffer dog, Swartz

searched thewater, but called it off at variousintervals as he waited for his colleagues whowere attending another Avondale incident. The boy’s body was eventually found the fol-lowing afternoon.

The boy’s grandfather, Mncedisi Mpande,(69), the village Chief Sakhumzi ZibuzeleTswina and local residents had gathered

along the river banks to watch the search.Tswina said hot conditions and school holi-

days exposed children to the risk of drowning.

“When it’s cold inwinter theywill never comenear the water. The risk is very high in sum-mer,” said Tswina.

DR LOVE

Dear Dr Love,

My Name is Amy, please help me. I have acolleague, who is always on my case recentlyabout us going out together.

This, Doc, has been going on for the pastthree months now. Honestly Dr Love, I’m notcomfortable at all with this and I find it verydifficult to cope, with all my friends telling methat I’m sick or even suggesting that I’m evenblind not to say yes to this guy.

Lastly my friends and my colleagues evengo as far as saying that this guy may not beinterested in waiting around any longer. DrLove do you think that, I’m crazy?

Amy, firstly thank you very much for join-ing us on Couch this week with Dr Love.

I understand clearly the position that youare in and I can also assure you that a lot ofpeople in our days find it very difficult to besure whether someone is being truthful or notabout issues of love and relationships.

Secondly, I don’t think you are sick or crazy

at all. I take you as very cautious and that ishighly recommendable to anyone thinking ofgetting into any relationship.

There is nothing wrong with taking all thetime in the world to ensure that you reallydon’t say yes to this guy, because of all thepressure that you have been put under.

You need to own your decision of saying yesto this guy so that you could easily own anyfall out that could come about as a result ofbeing in a relationship with him. This is yourresponsibility and yours alone.

Lastly, Please Amy, feel free to really under-

stand the person in question and also giveyourself time in ensuring that this truly andtruly feels right to you in full.

If up until now, it’s not that clear then youneed to understand that, it’s not right. My lastword to you is to stop worrying about the issueof him leaving you because you have not madeup your mind. If he leaves then you must knowit is for the fact that he was never yours.

) Feel free to send your questions relatingto love and relationships to [email protected] or sms 083 373 1779 and joinDr Love on Facebook: Dr Love. Radio.
