The Eastern Cape (EC) government closed down its only sugar company, North Pondo- land Sugar, which faced a number of challen- ges emanating from local social unrest. Provincial Treasury instructed the Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA) to close down the sugar company. Part of the is- sues was matters relating to land claims. There had since been efforts to bring back sugar production in the province. Speaking during the meeting with SASA, MEC Qoboshiyane said he wanted to maxi- mize the province’s benefits from sugar pro- duction to transform the province’s under performance in commodity production. “I deemed it appropriate that we touch base with this institution as part of our efforts to revive sugar production in the province. We want to revive productive sectors of our econ- omy. We have land in the province and we have a duty and responsibility to cultivate about 300 000 ha of productive land in the province and create jobs to contribute to the 1 million jobs target we have set in the nation- al development plan,” said Qoboshiyane. SASA Vice chairperson, Bongani Linda said they welcomed the MEC’s commitment to reviving EC’s sugar production, as this will bring the province positive economic bene- fits. “The association has been worried by the stopping of sugar production in the EC. We will work with government in its efforts to re- vive sugar production. SASA has been look- ing at having an input in the economic growth of the EC through the sugar industry,” said Linda. When the EC produced its last sugar cane in 2008, it produced more than 100 000 tons per annum which today would earn the province about R40 million per annum in profits. SASA data reveals that local sugar cane growers in Mbizana were losing more than R60 million per annum in revenue. Qoboshiyane added that working together with SASA, rural communities and tradition- al leaders, they are going to develop ideas on sugar production, resolve community chal- lenges regarding land ownership. Linda said they had been engaged in efforts to revive sugar production in Mbizana but were discouraged by the local social and polit- ical unrest facing the area. “What we are saying as the sugar industry is that the community is going to benefit from the production of sugar. We need to ensure that they capture the revenue that they should be earning from sugar production,” said Linda. Illovo’s Corporate Affairs Director, Sbu Hlela said they were ready to provide the mar- ket for the cane produced from the province and technical support to growers or extension officers provided by the government for the area. Linda added that Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal were the only two provinces that had sugar production after the EC stopped production. SASA data show that the local sugar indus- try, which contributes about 6% into the agri- cultural output, was making about R12 billion per annum, with R2.5 billion from export earnings, average sugar cane production was about 7.7 billion, with about 1 million rural people depending on the sugar industry which created about 137 000 direct jobs and 110 000 indirect jobs. Qoboshiyane said that government was working on ironing out challenges faced by the local Mbizana community where the North Pondoland Sugar company was situat- ed. He said he would mobilize the govern- ment, community and traditional leaders to sort out problems once and for all so that the province can revive sugar production to bene- fit the local community. ECRDA, in partnership with Sappi, had been supporting local communities helping them with forest production, which they sell to Sappi. “We need to constitute a high level visit to the Mbizana area to engage local com- munities and traditional leaders to inform them that we want to resolve their problems so that we bring back sugar production,” said Qoboshiyane, adding that government would invest in social transformation for the pro- duction to create much needed jobs for the lo- cals. Qoboshiyane said to end hostility amongst communities, there was a need to preach the end of hostility for development to triumph. Sweet prospect for EC agriculture MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane, green house farmer Derik Baird and Dube Trade Port Executive Mlibo Bantwini looking at the cucumbers grown at the Dube Trade Port’s AgriZone green houses during the MEC’s benchmark visit to learn best practices in KwaZulu Natal. THE Portfolio Committee on Basic Educa-tion had called on parents to become in-volved in the elections of school governingbodies (SGB) which had started on Fridayand continue throughout the month ofMarch

Chairperson for the Committee Noma-lungelo Gina said the governance ofschools is one area where South Africanscannot compromise

ldquoThe SGBs are crucial for the smoothrunning of schools and the provision of ed-ucation as they ensure accountabilityfrom all stakeholders including educa-torsrdquo said Gina

She said the committee urges parents tobecome involved in the elections and notto think of SGB elections as a futile exer-cise for a few individuals

Meanwhile the committee had received

a briefing from UMalusi and the Depart-ment of Basic Education (DBE) on learnersand teachers involved in group copyingduring the 2014 matric exams the scholartransport draft policy and the forthcomingSGB elections

ldquoWhile the committee appreciates andacknowledges the work the DBE is doingand the support it provides to schools inthe lower quintiles it is crucial that thelack of a scholar transport system doesnot jeopardise the good workrdquo

The DBE told the committee that theprovincial departments of transport infive provinces performed the scholartransport function while the provincialDBErsquos provide the service in the otherfour

The committee heard that once thefunction has been transferred entirely tothe Department of Transport the DBEwill still be responsible for identifyinglearners that need scholar transport

And that incident shocked everybody andprompted many people to go to court to seethis woman ldquonine-ninerdquo

Whilst others rebuke her of her deeds to theinnocent souls three men who were on thesame seat with the gossip team in the court-room were seeing otherwise

They were praising her beauty not consid-ering what other community members wereseeing in the woman They were crazy the

way she is structured OW AmandodaThe other one stressed that he would look

for her because he wants to marry her or togive her the love she deserves

As evidence stated clearly Melice was en-during an abusive relationship from her lateboyfriend in all these years

Eyi ivakele isithi ldquoHow can you harm sucha beautiful angel instead of giving her whatshe deservesrdquo Hayi umfana kuti he was inlove of the woman Hoping that he will meether any time soon because the court grantedher bail
