This is what research suggests, adding that regular grape consump- tion may play a role in eye health by protecting the retina from dete- rioration. "In mice, the grape-enriched diet provided substantial pro- tection of retinal function which is very exciting," said lead author Abigail Hackam from University of Miami, Florida. Grapes promote eye health from signaling changes at the cellular level to directly countering oxidative stress, he added. The researchers investigated whether a diet supplemented with grapes could protect the photoreceptors in mice with retinal degen- eration. The retina is the part of the eye that contains the cells that respond to light, known as photoreceptors. Mice were either fed a grape-supplemented diet corresponding to three servings of grapes per day for humans or one of two control diets. The results showed that retinal function was significantly pro- tected in the mice consuming the grape-enriched diet. They also exhibited thicker retinas. Grape consumption also protected retinal function in an oxidative stress model of degeneration. Further analysis revealed that the grape diet resulted in lower levels of inflammatory proteins and higher amounts of protective proteins in the retinas. SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME FOR THE SUMMERSummer is a great time to add some pizzazz to your decorating.

The key to summer decorating is to lighten and brighten. Trysome of these tips to transform your rooms and get your home

ready for summer:Remove layers: Just as we pack away our heavy sweaters

once the snow is gone, we can do the same for our rooms. Warm, fuzzy throws draped over the sofa bring warmth to a room in thewinter, but can add too much visual heat once the hot weatherarrives. Replace heavy throws with lighter, airier fabrics for amore summery feel. Do the same for large area rugs and thesmaller runners in the entry way and kitchen - replace themwith lighter rugs (look for any of the following: jute, cotton, bamboo or sisal), or even remove them completely for theseason.

Tablecloths and table runners can also be replaced withlightweight versions. A white runner really lightens up a darkwood table. This is a great time to go sheer with windowtreatments as well. It can really make your space feel moreopen. Cover up: If you have a dark, heavy sofa or chairs, aslipcover in a lighter colour and fabric can dramatically changethe appearance of your room. This trick also works in thebedroom - slipcover your headboard for a whole new look.Look for lighter, cooler fabrics in a summery pattern like a

light stripe or floral print. For a more casual feel, try a whitecanvas. Throw cushions can also benefit from the slipcovert rea tment . Use sheer fabr ic ( fo r added de ta i l , t ry anembroidered sheer) to make covers for your dark throw pillows.Even easier - take a sheer scarf and tie it around the pillow foran instant no-sew cover. For pillows that really say summer, try thiseasy DIY project: Sew two standard-size towels together along threesides to make super soft, comfortable pillowcases. Smaller towelscan be used to cover throw cushions.

Add some artwork: Replace your heavier artwork withl igh te r p ieces - go fo r summer l andscapes , f lo ra l andbotanicals, shells and water scenes. White picture frames canhelp to lighten things up as well. Gather up outdoor photos offamily and friends (beach shots are great for this). Put them incoordinating frames and hang them in a grouping to create aphoto wall that's sure to be a focal point.

You can also fashion your own summer artwork in a fewsimple steps - pick a few flowers and leaves from the garden, press them in a book for a week or two, then place them in apicture frame (for those that share my fear of bugs, check flowersbefore pressing to avoid any unpleasant surprises!). Any of thesetips will brighten up your home for summer and give you a freshnew look.

SAVING WATER THIS SUMMEROn any given day, each Ontarian uses around 260 litres of

water - nearly twice as much as other countries with similarstandards of living.

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment reports that pumping anddistributing water to homes and businesses, and treating water andwastewater accounts for almost one-half of a city's electrical use. Whatmany people don't realize is that residential water needs account forover 50 per cent of total usage. In the summer, between watering lawns and gardens, washing cars, andfilling and backwashing pools, demand for water increases by as muchas 80 per cent. According to Phil Dorner, president of the Ontario RealEstate Association, saving water is one of the easiest ways to improveefficiency in the home during the summer months. To Dorner, "Homeowners should know that when it comes to savingwater, every little bit counts. So get that leaky faucet fixed, make sureyour sprinkler is properly adjusted and pay attention to the weatherforecast - you may not need to be watering your lawn."The City of Toronto has some great tips to save water this summer andall year long:Year-round water saving ideas for homes:o Install water-efficient toilets and low-flow showerheads in yourkitchen and bathroomso Keep a jug of drinking water in the fridge to avoid waiting forcold running watero If you have a dishwasher, only wash full loads and use the

energy saver or shortest cycleo Whether you are preparing food or brushing your teeth, don'tlet the tap runo Fix leaky taps and toiletso Use a high-efficiency front loading washing machine, and runonly full loadsSummer garden watering tips and tricks courtesy of the City of Toronto:o Water your lawn in the morning to reduce water lost toevaporation. Avoid night watering -leaving grass wet overnight canpromote fungal disease. Before turning on your sprinkler, check theweather - if it's going to rain, no need to start watering.o Slow down the sprinkler to let water soak in to your lawn. Ifwater is running off your lawn, it's time to stop. Make sure your sprinkleris aligned so you aren't watering the sidewalk or driveway.o Disconnect downspouts from the sewer system and userainwater for grass and gardens.o Know your soil type and the amount of water this soil canhold (sandy soils can't hold much water, while clay soils require slowwater application to soak in).o Use a rain gauge to measure the amount of water your lawnand garden receive each week from all sources, including rainfall.o Use the right tools: For lawns, use a sprinkler that directs thewater close to the ground and roots. For trees, shrubs and flowergardens, use a watering can or drip hose that provides slow and steadyamounts of water. Fix your leaking garden hose and connections.

MAKE YOUR SMALL KITCHEN LOOK SPACIOUSKEEP THE COLOUR SCHEME LOWCONTRASTThis trick is like an optical illusion. When the difference between thecolours of the walls is marginal, theeye tends to glide over surfaces with-out a break. This movement deceivesthe mind into thinking that the room isbigger than it actually is. So, paint thewalls, flooring, cabinets and furniture ina low contrast colour scheme. Thismovement tricks you into thinking thespace is larger than it really is.HAVE GLASS DOORS FORCABINETSAnother way to fool a guest's eye is toreplace wooden or metal doors of cabi-nets with plain glass. This idea worksbecause the eye goes beyond thecabinet's frames into its depths. Ensureyour cabinet is clutter-free and colour-

coordinated from the inside and out, though! You don't want guests to peekinto messy storage.LET SUNLIGHT STREAM INNatural light makes any space appearlarger and brighter. If you don't have largewindows to let loads of sunlight in, keepthe window embellishments and treat-ments to a minimum. For privacy, drawan opaque shade so the light is notblocked but you're still safe from pryingeyes.CREATE SPACE FOR STORAGERecessed shelves that sit between thestuds in thekitchen have the dual valueof providing storage without eating intoair space or floor space. Even better ifthey are matched to the wooden furni-ture, since they would blend with thedesign. Don't have a spot for recessedshelves inside your kitchen? Make

room in the passageway.USE SMART FLOOR COVERINGSWhile printed wall and floor coveringsmake a room look busy, the reversealso holds true. For instance, floor cov-erings with huge diamonds create di-agonal lines that create the illusion ofwidth so the room looks much wider.USE SLENDER FURNITUREChoose lightweight stools, tables andchairs that are light in weight. Buy furni-ture with clean lines so that your eye isnot distracted. Buy an open table sothat the floor and walls are visible.EMPLOY STRIPESThis is a fashion trick that applies tohome decor as well. Horizontal stripesmake a person appear wider, and aroom too. Pick broad striped flooringthat runs horizontally to stretch thefloor space.

DECOR TRICKS THAT YOU CAN USE TO MAKE A SMALL KITCHEN MORE SPACIOUS
