    LOVE.LIFE.

    By: Celest Flores-Colina@CFColinaINQ

THERE is nothing easy about being a mother. It isthe toughest job in theworld. The difficulty isfurther amplified when

     you factor in running thes p o r t s c h a n n e l o f t h ecountry’s most respectednews website. It is likeraising two kids of thes a m e a g e a t t h e s a m etime—only both live inseparate houses, separat-ed by a long, patience-testing commute.

You rea lly have to love andbe in love with both to make itthrough one day.

Every day is a circus act; Inavigate tightropes on tiptoestrying not to fall but end up fail-ing anyway. I try my hardest tonever fail at both, but some-times I tend to trade the crazi-ness of one for the solace of theother. The sides are interchange-able, but there is always thatheavy feeling of guilt whenever Ifind comfort in the chaos of chasing deadlines on a franticnews day than dealing with my

fuzzy, inconsolable daughter. Itis easier to doll yourself up casu-ally than to settle for the en-dearingly disheveled look of motherhood. While those mo-ments are few and fleeting, theguilt always finds a way to creepup on me.

I guess that happens when you become a mom at 25, whenI’ve been everything but pre-pared, when just a few monthsbefore I stared at a stick bearing

two faint lines, in total shock, allI had thought about was my ca-reer.

    That’s my life there. And thisis my story: Getting pregnantearly threw me for a loop. I hadbeen careless at a time when Ihad been nothing but carefree.My bank account wasn’t ready for costly pedia visits, let alonef o r a s e c u r e f u t u r e f o r m y  daughter. I wasn’t able to steelmyself for years of soiled diapers

    and incomprehensible crying be-

cause it really wasn’t part of my plan. I didn’t think I was evergoing to be ready for the enor-mity of raising a child.

But you never really know what life-chan ging truly meansuntil you’ve held an infant in yourarms and have someone so deli-cate and innocent depend on youfor survival. Being a motherchanged me, and the landscape of my life. In a snap, I went from acareer woman full of dreams tosomeone willing to throw all thataway just to be at my daughter’sside when I’m needed, which isbasically all the time.

Months after I’ve come toterms that I was indeed givingup chase for the life I wanted forthe life I was dealt with and ulti-mately accepted, an opportunity for me to enjoy best of both

     worl ds—t o conti nue livi ng my dream as a sports writer—pre-sented itself. I couldn’t say no,e v e n i f i t m e a n t t h e e n d o f  morning playtime and afternoonnaps with my little princess.

Yes , I re en te re d th e wo rk-

force because I still wanted it. I

craved for the rush of the meet-ings, the thrill of covering asporting event. But this time, it

wa sn ’t ju st ab ou t th at. Wh en you’r e a mothe r, i t’s neve r justabout you anymore. I said yes tothe job, to the long hours, to thebehind-numbing commute toMakati because I wanted to beable to provide her the kind of life I didn’t have.

But every time I would bury myself in work , t imes that I

would be so swamp ed that my daughter doesn’t even cross my mind, an uneasy feeling settlesin my gut: I’m a horrible mother.

And when you spend more timea t y o u r o f f i c e d e s k t h a n a thome, that feeling is magnifiedby the littlest of things. When Ifind her rolling over with suchease and I don’t even have aclue when she started doing it.When I miss doctor’s appoint-ments, or when get home to my daughter already fast asleep, seemingly bigger than the lasttime I saw her, and knowingthat there is no end to the late

    nights unless I quit—that’s when

    that horrible feeling is multi-plied a thousand-fold.

B e c a u s e e v e n a f t e r I ’ v e wrapped up a challenging cover-age, successfully presided a bigmeeting, or got a pat on theback from the bosses, seeing my daughter get up on all fours forthe first time, smiling happily atme with her infectious smile andexpressive eyes, will always bethe highlight of my day. Hermilestones will always trumpmine. I take pride in everythingshe does, be it as small as hersucking on hands or as big asher eating solid food for the first

time. Yes , I kn ow. Th er e wi ll be

overwhelming moments when I wo ul d wa nt to pa ck my ba gsand just go. Maybe I will alwayshave those few minutes when I’drather be at work. But when

your love for something runs sodeep, like how my love for my daughter does, you will alwayschoose to come home. After along day at work, nothing beatsthe warmth seeing my daughter

    smile in her sleep brings.

     A mother’s job is never done,much less a working mom’s. I

just have to keep on remindingmyself that everything I’m doingis for her, that I’m striving to do

wel l bec aus e I wan t her to beproud of me, and that I’m jug-gling two hats to give her a bet-ter future.

The natural Nadine Lustre,‘super close’ with James Reid

Highlighting this supersti-tious belief, Viva Films comesup with a suspense-thriller,

Adolfo Alix Jr.’s  Chain Mail(opens today), which gathersthree of today’s hottest youngstars,  Nadine Lustre, Shy Carlos and  Meg Imperial.

    It delves into the mysteri-

ous and tragic deaths of sever-al people who have receiveda cursed e-mail. Watch itand watch out!

    Here’s my  tête-à-tête with Nadine:

What makes your love team with JamesReid differentfrom othertandems?

We’re just be-ing ourselves. Asfor other tandems, each one of us isunique and

    different naman.What’s the craziest thing

    that you’ve done withJames?

It’s not really crazy, but Icould say that it was one of my best experiences withJames: Driving through theGolden Gate Bridge in a top-

down car. What stage is yourfriendship with

    James in?Super close.

How do youfeel when peo-ple say that you look likeKathrynBernardo? Is itan advantageor a disadvan-tage?

It’s an ad- vantage and adisadvantage atthe same time.I’m used to itso it doesn’tbother me asmuch as be-fore.

What do you find hardto understandabout boys?

    Their emo-tions.What’s your

    guilty pleasure?Shopping!What turns you

    off?Bad attitude.If you could be

a guy for amonth, who would you want

    to be and why?Johnny

    Depp. He’s the

    best.Do you believe in chain

    letters?We all get chain mail.

Thing is, it’s not always real.

What’s the worst rumorabout you? How did youhandle it?

That I had my nose done. That I had my face enhanced. It

wasn’t really the worst, but that was silly. People use those ru-mors against me all the time.

Where do you see your-self 10 years from now?

As much as possible, I don’t want to plan my future. I want everything to be sponta-neous.

What’s the best part of being Nadine?

Everything. I love beingme. All the experiences, allthe memories, all thepeople in my life, even allthe hardships, all obsta-cles that I’ve gonethrough.

I don’t regret anythingbecause it made me whoI am today. It made me abetter person. I love the

cret formula behind itssuccessful TV programs,

which have recently post-ed high ratings, boostingthe network’s overall au-dience share?

Kapamilya network president and chief exec-utive officer  Charo San-tos-Concio attributes it

to content that pays trib-ute to Filipinos’ ad-mirable qualities.

“It’s not about us any-more. It’s about the in-spiring nature of the Fil-ipino,” said Concio dur-ing her speech at theFifty Shades of Marketingconference held at SofitelPhilippine Plaza Manilarecently.

“Be Careful With My Heart” and “Forever-more,” she said, were

loved by viewers becausethese shows highlighted Fil-ipino values and mirrored truestories. She said that one of the things that Filipinos trea-sure the most is the integrity of the family, which inspiresthem to persevere throughhard times.

To the Fil-ipino, family iseverything. “Allsuccesses andfailures are al-

ways appreciat-ed in the con-text of family,”she elaborated.

    Concio point-

    ed out that“Forevermore”showcased the

     value of com-munity in the

fictional La Presa. “‘Forever-more’ acknowledged the good-ness of the Filipino,” she said.

Affirming the Filipino identity also makes ABS-CBN’s content“a source of inspiration andstrength to recharge” one’sfighting spirit.
