(CCF-PI), in collaboration with Philippine Businessfor Social Progress (PBSP) and Department ofEducation (DepEd), recently turned over a two-storey,six-classroom school building to school officials of theYolanda-torn Marasbaras Elementary School (ES) inTacloban, Leyte, to help bring back a better and moreconducive learning environment to its schoolchildren.

Leading the turnover cere-mony were Coca-Cola Philip-pines Vice President for Public

Affairs and CommunicationsAdel Tamano and CCFPI presi-dent Ma. Cecilia Alcantara withDepEd Undersecretary MarioDeriquito, Tacloban City Mayor

Alfred Romualdez, and PBSPProgram Management Office Di-rector for Education MarylinMuncada.

During the event, Romualdezsaid he will push the local gov-ernment to adopt the model ofthe building for the citys futurebuilding projects. This is thefirst structure that Ive seen thatis not only functional but also

cost-effective, he said.The new building is the first

disaster-resilient school buildingCCFPI has built in the country.Its other features include aroofdeck for possible evacua-tion, ramps for better access topersons with disabilities, and

wider doors and windows in ev-ery room.

For Grade 6 adviser and Sci-ence teacher Helen Daaco, the

new school building is not justthe biggest project a donor hasgiven to Marasbaras ES but asymbol that their school couldfinally go back to normal.

It made us hope that wecould teach in the way that weenvisioned, she added.

Daaco recounts how, afterthe typhoon, they had to scrubdesks and dry whatever booksand records they could find justto provide a learning environ-ment for their students.

We went around differentareas and evacuation centers tofind and encourage our stu-dents to go back to school. It

was important that we could

teach them to help them feelthat our situation will get bet-ter, she said.

With the new building, Daa-co is more inspired to teachsince the rooms have biggerspaces which are more con-ducive to learning.

Im teaching Science, so forme, a spacious room really mat-ters. In Science, you dont learnthrough chalk and talk alone.

You have to let your studentsexplore through experiments,film shows and other activitiesthat really encourage them toopen their minds, she added.
