FRIDAY, MAY 1, 2015 7 SPORT SDENNIS U. EROA,  Editor

Fireworks missing in final press conferenceBy Francis Ochoa

     Assistant Sports Editor

LAS VEGAS—If this highly an-ticipated bout is going to rank up there among the classics, itbetter flaunt the kind of fire-

works that was palpably miss-ing in the final press confer-ence before fight night.

Manny Pacquiao and FloydMayweather Jr. were a pictureof decorum and respect asthey spoke briefly in front of

journalists Wednesday after-noon at MGM Grand’s KA

Theater and both stayed away from the drama and verbal

jabs that fighters normally en-gage in during these pre-fightevents.

The strongest words ut-tered during the press confer-ence came from trainer Fred-die Roach, who guaranteed a

victory by Pacquiao. There was little surprise

    that Pacquiao was an epitome

of humility during the event, which was attended by ahuge throng of journalistsfrom all over the world.

    The surprise? Mayweather was too.

“First of all, I wanna thank God,” Mayweather said. “God

made all of this possible.”Perhaps Mayweather was

out to massage an image thathas been taking a hit becauseof his past record.

Even Mayweather, who hasbeen involved in some of thebiggest, highest-grossing

fights in boxing, admitted he was floored by the interestthe fight generated.

“I am amazed by theturnout,” Mayweather said.

The fight is so big and so well publicized that Bob Arum, the Top Rank chief  who promotes Pacquiao took a different tack and evendownplayed the bout’s placein the history of the sport.

“The only thing I can say in certainty is that in thiscentury this fight is thebiggest fight in the last 15

year s,” Arum told jour nali stsafter the press conference.

“And anybody who tries tosay that this fight is biggerthan any fight in the othereras, they’re entitled to theiropinion. ”

Pacquiao has vowed tomake sure this fight will rank somewhere up there amongthe classics—Duran-Leonard,Hagler-Hearns, Ali-Frazier,Hagler-Leonard and Tyson-Holyfield come to mind—buta lot will depend on howmuch the guy in the oppositecorner will cooperate.

    “I have worked hard to

help this fight make history,”Pacquiao said.

ALAGA MATAMIS ang ngiti ni Freddie Roach samantalang nakatingin sa alagangsi Manny Pacquiao na kumakaway sa mga dumalo sa huling pressconference bago ang sapakan nila ni Floyd MayweatherJr.   REM ZAMORA
