SHOWBUZZ FRIDAY, MAY 31, 20134ROMEL M. LALATA, Editor

    From journalistto filmmaker

Dingdong is all praise for Ce-sar as director. Very true to thesubject! Dong gushes. His

view as a journalist is very in-fluential in his narrative.

    Dongs portrayal of an angst-

ridden dancer/inmate is award-worthy. We all have demons tofight. Steel Bars will get youin the groove to break free.

    Heres my tte--tte withDirek Cesar:

What made you do Danceof the Steel Bars?

I conceptualized Dance of theSteel Bars (DOTSB) in late 2007[when] the dancing prisoners ofCebu became a YouTube sensa-tion. I got inspired when I sawa feature about them on 24Oras.

Later that night I wrote thefirst draft of Indak ng Rehas, theoriginal title of DOTSB. I alsocame up with the sequencetreatment and characters

I was then about to completemy debut film Banal withMarnie Manicad as line pro-ducer Marnie and I were talk-

    ing about doing a film

again and she said shewanted to direct her ownfilm after a few days Isat down with Marnieand two other peopleand developed the story-line and some dialogues

What message didyou want to impartthrough the film?

DOTSB for me is a dif-ferent kind of film, tack-

ling not only the changein the prisoners them-selves but also the reha-bilitation of the wholeprison system.

As filmmakers wewant to remind the audi-ence that walang taonglikas na masama...We

want to show that peoplewho commit crimes, nomatter how awful, [can]change...that while theyare in prison, the prisonsystem should give themhope by treating them aspeople, without passing

judgment. Our societyneeds to give ex-convictsa chance to [return to]the fold.

The film also showsthat, aside from stricterrules and political will, dancing [helped] a lot inrehabilitating the 1,500men and women accused

    of rape, drug offenses,

murder and other crimes. What were the truths you

    discovered inside the Cebuprison?

Marnie, her husband JiggyManicad, a fellow reporter andanchor, and I talked to the pris-oners before filming started.

The exchange gave us insighton what to expect during theshoot that, when it comes topeople, we are simply going tofilm like in any ordinary set.

At Cebu Provincial Detentionand Rehabilitation Center (CP-DRC), inmates embraced the artof dancing, which led them toembrace discipline and self-re-spect. Hats off to Gov. GwenGarcia and Byron Garcia forthe program that has become a

    worldwide phenomenon.After the seven-day shoot, I

was sur prised to learn that theydid not only dance well butthey were also brilliant actors.

What was the hardest part offilming inside the penitentiary?

The only problem was thelimited time to film inside theprison. It was no joke making afilm in seven days.

What was it like directingDingdong Dantes?

    When I thought of Mando

    the character, I knew Dingdong

would be perfect since he wasan artist who could act, danceand deliver English lines flaw-lessly. We consider him one ofthe best actors in the businesstoday.

Youre from news and cur-rent affairs. In Dance of the

Steel Bars youve sort ofcrossed over to show biz. Howwas the adjustment?

I did not really have to ad-just as I had done this beforewhen I did Banal, which wasan entry in the 2008 MetroManila Film Festival. One of thethings I really couldnt get usedto was the fact that I was rub-bing elbows with some of thebest in the film industry Imagine, directing PatrickBergin, who is one degree awayfrom rubbing elbows with JuliaRoberts! We also had EdWhite, our composer who wason the set Ed is based inLondon and was mentored byHans Zimmer and he did liveperformances withSir Andrew Lloyd Webber then our head choreographer,Cindera Che, a Taiwanese-born,Los Angeles-raised performancecoach, was Michael Jacksonsmuse in his Smooth Criminal

    music video.

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

WE at the Cinema EvaluationBoard gave an A rating to Ce-sar Apolinarios obra maestra,

Dance of the Steel Bars (in theaters onJune 12). Top-billed by Dingdong Dantes,

the film explores the inner workings of prisonersminds. The story is told in a way to make the audienceempathize with the characters.

    Husband cheating on wife

at the moment I cant.I dont see Gerard

the way I used to. Hewas my life, my bestfriend and everythingthat meant so muchto me. Right now, Isee him as someone

who brought me suchmisery and pain. Iknow this will pass, but how do I start?Where do I start? Joe,Im badly hurt. Idrather spend the restof my life withouthim than see him ev-ery day and feel thepain all over again.

    Please help me.

    Therese

THERESE, I cannotblame you for feelingthat way. You have ev-ery right to . This is

probably one of thegreatest adversitiesthat you would everencounter in yourmarriage. All relation-

ships are put to thefurnace and tested bythe fire. This is the ul-timate measure of ourresolve to stay on and

fight for somethingthat we have workedhard for.

It is true that some-times the person whohas taught our heartshow to love will be the

very same person whowould break it. Yourhusband played a

    game and used you as

a bet for somethingthat he probablywasnt prepared to

face. Go d had a p ur-pose for revealing ev-erything to you . Heknew it would hurt sobad that you wouldwant to curse thembut he still showed youeverything.

Therese the thingsthat make us cry are

    the same things that

    can make us

strong. Youhave been de-liberately hurtby your hus-band but youmust not carrythe burden of

his mistake all yourlife. We sometimeshurt the people welove because of ourown selfishness butthat doesnt mean that

we cannot be capableof change, that wecannot be capable ofmaking up for ourmistakes and mend allthat we have broken.

Therese the greatestgift that you can giveyour marriage now istrust. Without it , youwill be haunted by

your husbands pastforever. If you love himthen give him a chanceto make up. If he is

sincere with his inten-tions, he would do ev-erything to gain theconfidence that lost.

Therese, believe me,a relationship is notalways about laughterand good times. A re-lationship is alsoabout hurting and get-ting hurt. It is aboutunderstanding others

when they step on ourfeet. It i s about for-giveness when we havebeen hurt. It is abouttrust when we havebeen betrayed. Andmost importantly, it isabout love when we

    feel like giving up.

    DEAR Joe,

Im 26 years old. I recently got mar-ried and Im desperate for advise.

My husband and Iwent out for fouryears before we de-cided to get married. Our relationship wasmade in heaven aspeople would say. Thepast 4 years werespent with such joyful

bliss. We had fightsbut we made it apoint to fix them.Getting married camenaturally and wethought of a happilyever after. But that

    wasnt the case.November last

year, I was called toattend a seminar out-side the country for a

week, Not knowingthat this would be the

start of the miserywere both into rightnow. While I wasaway, Gerard foundcomfort in the inter-net. He met a coupleof people and enjoyedsuch discovery.

When I came back, everything was thesame with us, or so Ithought. He chancedupon Marianne, a Fil-

ipina living in theU.S. Marianne was di-

vorced with a fouryear old kid. Her lifewas such a mess thatGerard somehow un-derstood and becameher friend. From thenon without my knowl-edge, they exchangede-mails. I dont know

when or how but theyfell in love.

The day before thewedding, he asked aclose friend to callMarianne and tell herthat hed be out ofreach for a couple ofdays because of the

wedding. Mariannecried and wrote himan e-mail saying howshe wished she wouldbe the one walkingdown the aisle withhim. While I was busy

being happy, some-bodys heart was insuch misery and pain.

    O n m y w e d d i n gday, just before I ar-rived at the church, Igot a text from hims a y i n g w a l a n gatrasan, Ill be waiting

    f o r y o u d o w n t h eaisle.Joe, if Id known

earlier what was hap-pening, I might havenever shown up.

On our weddingnight, his phone rangat 1:30 a.m. It wasMarianne on the oth-er end, as I learnedlater on. They talkedfor half an hour, ofthings that I will

probably never knowfor the rest of my life. The next few days

were the lowestpoints of my life.Somehow, I learnedabout Marianne andthe things that werehappening to them. It

was hard not to react.I confronted him andall he told me wasthat its nothing. Mar-

ianne came back toManila for a vacationand they decided tomeet. I saw them Joe,and all I could do wascry. How can some-body show you thebeauty of life andhurt you that much? I

    wanted to die at thetime.

It came to a pointwhen the three of us

met and talked. Theyreassured me that itwas nothing, it wasjust a game theyplayed. Joe, as muchas I wanted to believethem and pretend, Icant. Marianne wentback to the US andpromised that she

wont be communicat-ing with us anymore.I would like to believethat, Id loved to but
