stories in The spotlightAs told by Joanne Miller

These pictures are of our lake, where we live near the dam (our address is Dam Road) in Deruyter, NY so this is right in front of our house.

The dam has a leak in it and if it breaks, it would flood everything for 50 miles around. It was a feeder for the Erie Canal. They are fixing it now.  First, they let the water down to repair the dam.

They set up cameras to watch the dam in case it leaks more. The lights come on and the cameras take pictures. The pictures go to a screen where someone is watching it all the time. An engineer is there 24 hours a day.

Those mounds out there are muskrat houses that remain after the water was let down. There used to be trees all along the back side of the dam. They have removed a bunch of the trees already, but they have to remove all of them. Everywhere they remove one, they have to refill the hole with the same material as soon as they pull up the roots. This is a picture of the overflow of the dam.

They are pretty sure they will get it fixed without any problems. Jack and I were watching their operations very closely.

letter From The editor Welcome back to the next wave of snowbirds! The season got off to a great start with the Halloween Dance and there’s more fun to come this season. In the months to come, there will be many activities taking place. Check your copy of the Breezes to see what’s going on. The new catch phrase is r-T-B—read the Breezes to find out what’s happening! More and more residents will be returning in the coming months and once you arrive you will notice some changes and improvements to the park to help make your stay here more enjoyable this season. I encourage you to support the wonderful activities Tropic Isles has to offer. Find something you enjoy doing and invite a new resident to join you. New residents! Come out and get involved in the activities—as a volunteer or participant—there’s something for everyone! Try something new! Take a leadership role. You’ll meet lots of people and make new friends. Get ready for a great season! Let the fun begin! I am always looking for pictures of residents, group activities, and events taking place in Tropic Isles. Send in your photos to [email protected]. If you have photos to submit, the deadline is the 10th of each month for the following month’s newsletter. Photos that are submitted after the 10th, will miss the deadline and will be used in the next issue of the Breezes, when possible. If you have vacation photos to share, please send them. Thanks to everyone who sent in pictures this summer. This month, we celebrate Veterans’ Day to honor all members of the Armed Forces who served this country. They served and fought to protect us, to keep our country safe, and to preserve our way of life. Veterans gave their time and risked their lives for you and me. In some cases, they made the ultimate sacrifice. This holiday originally was called Armistice Day and was first celebrated in 1921. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed it to Veteran’s Day, in honor of those who served and died from all wars. Remember to thank our veterans for their service. November also reminds us that we have a lot to be thankful for—new friends, family connections, each new day, good health and healing, and the little things in life.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Please Keep Our canals Free of Debris!

In 2012-13, the canals in Tropic Isles were dredged at a cost exceeding $150,000. That dredg-ing provided deeper water access in places where there was little to none. Since that time, we have tried to keep our canals clean and free of any type of debris. YOu caN HelP BY NOT blowing grass clippings/lawn debris into the canals or streets and making sure your lawn maintenance provider is aware of that as well. If you are mowing lawns for residents in the park, please do not allow grass clippings to end up in the canal or the street. They eventually get washed into the canals. More importantly, reMeMBer aNYTHiNG THaT YOu allOW TO GO iNTO THe sTreeTs (lawn clippings, sand, gravel, dirt, stones, debris, etc.) will get washed into the street drains and end up in the canal with the next rain or lawn irrigation system that isn’t monitored correctly. The canals will start to fill in and then more dredging will be needed at a cost to the residents. Please DO YOur ParT! eVerY liTTle BiT HelPs!

New 2020 resident Phone Directories

The new 2020 phone directories will be distributed this month to residents by the Block Captains, one per household, if you are listed in the directory this year. If your residence looks vacant, it will be returned to the Office. Then you may pick up your copy from the Office at your convenience. Once you receive your new directory, please check through the new directory to see if your information is listed correctly. Remember to check ALL the sec-tions of the directory, including the street listing in the back. If you find an error in the directory or you are not listed, please contact me by calling 941-722-4037 or send an email to [email protected] with your correction or addition. I will be happy to print the correction or addition in next month’s issue of the Breezes in the interim and make the change in the directory for next year.

architectural review committee“arc”

“ARC” is the Architectural Review Committee that makes architectural and landscaping decisions serving in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors. The responsibility of the ARC is to oversee all improvements on the exterior of the Dwelling and the Unit/Lot, excluding maintenance items. All requests for any work being done to the outside of your home or yard must be made in writing by way of the standard ARC process and approved before any work can begin. iF iN DOuBT for anything you are doing, file an arc request. ARC application forms are available in the Office and on the website www.tropicisles.net . The ARC approval process begins with a preliminary review by a 3-person team, referred to as 3-COR. Simple improvements and replacement issues may be approved by this group and not require a review by the full ARC committee. The full arc committee meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, as needed. The meetings are held at 9:30 aM in the Pretty room of the Yacht club. You will be notified when you are placed on the ARC agenda and whether your request is approved or denied by the committee. No work should begin on your project until your final approval letter from the Office is received. If you fail to get ARC approval for your project before you begin, you may be asked to deconstruct it. If you have any questions, give me a call at 941-705-4485. Thanks!

architectural review committee (arc) Procedure

ARC approval is needed for any work that is done on the outside of your home or lot. When in doubt, complete an application. It is better to be safe than sorry. The ARC procedure is as follows:1. Fill out an ARC application and submit it to the office. Make

sure to include diagrams, drawings, or photos as needed. If possible, please show the neighbor’s homes and the distance from each. Include the labels N, S, E, and W on your diagrams.

2. All applications must be logged in at the Office and assigned a date for review by the full ARC Committee, unless approved by 3-COR.

3. The Committee needs a week to review the application and go to the lot before the next meeting date.

4. If there is not enough time to do this, you will have to wait for a future date. Emergencies may be an exception, as determined by Management.

5. You will be notified when your request is placed on the agenda for an ARC meeting. Meetings are usually held the first and third Tuesday of the month at 9:30 AM in the Yacht Club-Pretty Room. You are encouraged to attend that meeting.

6. After the meeting, you will be notified in writing, as to whether your request is approved or denied.

7. If denied, you can appeal the decision to the Board of Direc-tors, if you so choose.

8. To obtain a permit from the city, you must first receive the architectural review application approval, signed by the arc committee and the manager, Paul smith.

9. You must also provide a copy of all required permits to the Office.

~~special Thanks~~ ~~In Memory of Edward C. Van Voorhis~~

Ed and I have always been happy living here in Tropic Isles. Listening to the sounds that start the day---the train whistling in the distance as it approaches; it passes through and fades away. Much like our lives. What matters is what we leave behind—the love of family and friends. We are grateful for all your kindness, support, and love. Thank you so much, dear friends.

Mary Van Voorhis and family

Thanks to everyone for the prayers, cards, thoughts, condo-lences, and hugs. The Red Hat ladies, the ladies that I play cards with, the people at the pool and at church were so supportive with thoughts for my baby girl, Jeanne, who passed away. I can’t thank everyone enough for everything you did during Jeanne’s illness. It meant a lot to me! A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be held at a later time.

Wanda Black

Thank you to all the residents who so generously made dona-tions to the Bahama Relief of Hurricane Victims collection. Your support and contributions were greatly appreciated.

The Tropical Red Hatters

Thanks to Anne Nitti for being the sunshine/bereavement reporter over the summer at Coffee Hour. Also, a big thank you goes out to Anne for volunteering to be the new Blood Drive Coordinator for Tropic Isles.

THe crOWs are BacK…. Or DiD THeY eVer leaVe?

10 reallY WeirD crOW FacTs 1. Crows living in suburban areas require only 10% of the nesting territory that crows living in the wilderness do.

2. Crows are much more tolerant of range overlap.

3. They also will build fake nests to fool predators.

4. Crows will crush an ant and rub it all over themselves like perfume! The Formic Acid in the ants helps ward off parasites.

5. Pet crows give their owners “names”. This is identified by a unique sound they make around specific people that they would not otherwise make.

6. Healthy crows help crippled crows, but they have a dark side. Crows occasionally murder each other for reasons that mystify scientists.

7. Crows have been observed chasing sparrows into buildings in order to stun them. The result is sparrow for lunch. Don’t worry, they pick on birds their own size – mobbing crows can seriously injure hawks. Scientists suspect an eagle was even killed by mobbing crows.

8. Crows have been reported to eat over 1000 food items, including insects, worms, berries, birds eggs and nestlings, small mammals, bats, fish, snakes, frogs, salamanders, animal dung, grain, nuts, carrion, fried chicken, hamburgers, Chinese food, French fries, and human vomit. They can be weirdly picky though – an experiment showed crows prefer French fries in a McDonald’s bag over those in a brown paper bag. To top it off, a nestling can eat 100 grasshoppers in 3 hours.

9. Crows sunbathe for Vitamin D.

submissions to the Breezes Newsletter

Submissions to the Breezes should be sent to Cindy Shaw at [email protected]. The deadline is the 10th of each month for the following month. If you are unable to make a submission using email, please bring a paper copy to me or call 941-722-4037. Pictures of residents and happenings in the park are always wel-come. Residents, please be patient with your Block Captain when wait-ing for delivery of your newsletter. They will deliver the Breezes to you as soon as they can, once they have been notified. Be sure to thank your Block Captain for the volunteer work that they do, especially in the heat of the summer.

Cindy Shaw, Editor

Breezes Delivery As you may know, our Tropic Isles’ Newsletter, The Breezes, is delivered by our wonderful volunteer Block Captains. It is very hard for these volunteers to know where to place your newsletter if you do not have a designated spot by your door (rock, paper-weight, etc.) that can hold your paper. The Block Captains cannot put the newsletters into your USPS mailbox, and we hate to leave them on the stairs or near your door on windy days as the papers end up all over the park. Please have a spot that is easy to figure out for your Block Captain to leave your newsletter. If you don’t have a secure spot, they will return your copy to the Office and you can pick it up there at your convenience. Please don’t forget to thank your Block Captain for the service they do. The name of your Block Captain can be found in this issue of the Breezes and in your new Resident Directory. Thanks!

safety Tip of the MonthTheRe’s danGeR aT eveRy cORneR!

It is extremely important when driving in the park, to drive the speed limit --15 mph-- and to stay on your side of the road. Our roads in the park are narrow. Many bikers and motorists drive down the middle of the road making for a very hazardous situation. Bikers need to ride single file and stay to the righthand side of the road. Drivers need to also stay in the right lane and stop at all stop signs. Be especially careful when going around corners. When making a turn, stay on your side of the road. Look ahead to make sure that no one is coming in the other direction. The stop signs and speed limit signs are placed there for your safety and the safety of others. Do your part to put safety first!

We raise a considerable amount of money by recycling aluminum cans. The drop off box is in the Office parking lot or call for pick up if you have a large quantity. Thank you so much for con-tinuing to recycle your aluminum cans in the newly refurbished white box near the Office. This is for aluminum cans only. Please do not put plastic bags, trash, or any other food items in the box. The money collected from the cans is used on items for the park. The Big red Bus Was Here!

The Big Red Bus was here on October 11 for our first blood drive of the year. Charisse DiMain, our OneBlood representative, said “Tropic Isles did AMAZING!! We were able to collect 21 units of blood which will save up to 63 lives! That is the greatest number of donors we’ve seen in October, ever! Remember, the blood collected will go to our local hospitals, All Children’s Hospital, and all the VAs in Florida. Your generosity is giving someone life, and more time to enjoy it!” Thanks to all those people who took the time to donate blood. Giving blood is a simple thing to do, but it can make a big differ-ence in the lives of others. Every two seconds, someone needs blood. The blood donated at our blood drive was likely transfused into a patient within 48 to 72 hours. The turnaround is that fast and that constant. Please consider being a blood donor at our next blood drive on December 13. Donors will receive a fleece blanket and a coupon for a pint of culver’s custard.

Thank you to the following people for donating blood: Al MacKenzie Carla Ernewein Brigid Lundy-VittonDon Fosco Ed Baker Jan KruegerMark Smith Pat Meade Phil CookScott Hyma Dan Demers Don StottsGina Blumenstock Paul Jordan Phyllis SmithShirley Clarkson Cindy Shaw Jerry Quesenberry Norm Sparling

Can you tell why these people are sitting in such an unusual arrangement? Only in Florida would people sit like this to be in the shade.

Florida residents will understand this. The caption says it all!
