From the Editor As our friends and neighbors leave for their summer homes, we “full-timers” can look forward to quieter roads, less crowded restaurants, and warmer weather. We wish our snowbird friends and neighbors a safe and healthy summer. With the warmer weather, comes the “rainy season” of June-September and of course, the dreaded Hurricane Season which always runs from June 1-November 30. Please make the necessary preparations as the season approaches.

Hurricane Preparedness June 1st begins the 2017 Hurricane Season. It is important to be prepared before disaster strikes. Please pick up a copy of the Disaster Planning

Guide wherever you see one. They include maps of the locations of all shelters, as well as planning and preparation information. Here are some important things to remember:•Whichshelterstheyopencanvarywitheachemergency,de-

pending on many factors, for example the size and intensity of the disaster, etc. Emergency Management will announce, via the media, which shelters will open and when.

•DONOTgotoashelteruntillocalofficialsmaketheannounce-ment that the shelter is open.

•Pleasedonotcalltheschoolsor9-1-1-forDisaster/Hurricaneinformation. Listen for the announcements.

Please note: It is important to know that ALL persons living in Tropic Isles MUST evacuate if ANY mandatory evacuation order is given. Tropic Isles lies in the RED zone for hurricane evacuation and flooding, which means we MUST evacuate! Be prepared and be safe!

share Your Power to save Lives! The recent blood drive on April 21 resulted in 16 units of blood. Remember, each donation can save up to three lives, so that means 48 patients will benefit from the lifesaving efforts of blood donors from Tropic Isles. Every two seconds, someone needs blood. The blood donated at our

blood drive was likely transfused into a patient within 48 to 72 hours. The turnaround is that fast and that constant. Thanks to Beverly Houk, Cindy shaw, Deane sumler, Jackie Adinolfe, Jerry Quesenberry, Kathy Dingler, Patty Meade, susan Neu-mann, Bonnie stokes, Deane Corneil, Don stotts, Jan Burbie, John King, Lance Linke, and sandy Rienholtz for their blood donations.

Laughter is the Best Medicine! (an email from a wife To her husBand)

Before you return from your overseas trip, I just want to let you know about a very small incident I had with the Ford F-150 when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately, I escaped unscathed and I really didn’t get hurt, so please don’t worry too much about me. As I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent, but the Ford F-150 fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your Ferrari. Thank goodness, I missed our bikes! I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality and deep love for me that you will find it in your heart to forgive me. You know how much I love you and care for you, my dearest, dearest love. I am enclosing a picture for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again.

Your loving wife. XX  P.S: Your girlfriend phoned.

Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella.That’s FAITH. When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That’s TRUST. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarm to wake up. That’s HOPE. We plan big things for tomorrow, in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE. We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children. That’s LOVE. On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence “I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” That’s ATTITUDE.

A little boy was taken to the dentist. It was discovered that he had a cavity that would have to be filled. The dentist asked, “What kind of filling would you like for that tooth?” “Chocolate please,” replied the youngster. A couple went for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and ordered the “Chicken Surprise.” The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady, little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down. “Good grief, did you see that?” she asks her husband. He hasn’t, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and again the lid rises. He sees two little eyes looking around before it slams down. Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains  what is happening, and demands an explanation. “Please sir,” says the waiter, “what you order?” The husband replies, “Chicken Surprise.” “Ah! So solly,” says the waiter apologizing... “I bring you Peking Duck!”

A woman was sitting next to a man. When he saw her pull out her Bible, he gave a little chuckle and went back to what he was doing. After awhile, he turned to her and asked,

“You don’t really believe all that stuff in there, do you?” The lady replied, “Of course I do. It is the Bible.” He said, “Well, what about that guy that was swallowed by that whale? “She replied, “Oh, Jonah. Yes, I believe that. It is in the Bible.” He asked, “Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?” The lady said, “Well, I don’t really know. I guess when I get to heaven, I will ask him.” “What if he isn’t in heaven?” the man asked sarcastically. “Then you can ask him,” replied the lady.

tropic isles’ Marina Summer is here at the Marina. When it gets too hot and you’re sitting at the pool or just at home wanting something cool and refreshing to eat or

drink, stop by the Marina and treat yourself to an ice cream, cold pop, glass of wine, or a beer. A lot of our northern friends have left and will return next season. Too bad for them because the fish are biting.  For those of us who are still here, look for redfish on outgoing tides by channels to inlets. You can also look for them on incoming tides by oyster beds and mangroves. Chum the snook up with white bait and you will have dinner before you know it. Try some of our chum and frozen bait to help with an easy catch. Live shrimp are always available and the fish love it. Don’t forget! When you’re out on the boat and need gas, stop by the Tropic Isles’ Marina where the gas is the cheapest on the water and the conversation is free.

tropical Red Hatters summer Fun

At the May meeting of the Tropical Red Hatters, Queen, Anna Antonacci presented former Queen, Jeanne Smith, with a gift of appreciation for her years of service.

Our May activities included a trip to the Moose and a picnic at Emerson Point.  The June activities will include lunch and a movie at the Renaissance on 9th and a brown bag lunch and movie here in Tropic Isles.  In July, plans are underway to go to the Planetari-um and see Snooty, see a live theatre production, and check out waterside entertainment, but we are open to other suggestions. Members will meet Wednesday, June 7 at 10:00 AM in the Yacht Club to further complete these plans. Come join the fun!

safety tip of the Monthfrom The palmeTTo police deparTmenT

We have experienced an increase in auto bur-glaries in the City, especially in areas east of 8th Avenue West. There are some very simple things that we can all do to prevent auto burglaries. First and foremost, take the time to lock your ve-

hicle. The majority of our car burglaries are crimes of opportunity, which happen with unlocked vehicles. Do not leave valuables in plain sight within your vehicle. If possible, please remember to take your valuables, including purses, backpacks, phones, and laptops with you when your car is unattended, or lock them in your trunk. It is never a good idea to leave unattended firearms in a motor vehicle. Also, please do not leave spare keys, house keys, or vehicle fobs inside your vehicle. This year, we have investigated two auto theft cases where the owner left their vehicle unlocked, with a spare key in the center console. Thank you for your atten-tion and cooperation. Together, we can reduce auto burglaries in the City of Palmetto.

Palmetto Police Local Number – 941-721-2000, EXtENsioN 4

Many Tropic Isles’ snowbirds have headed north and as our population decreases the incidents of pool trespassers, theft, and vandalism may increase. Please remember our local Palmetto Police are very prompt in their response time if we call them, but they can be delayed if you dial 911 on your cell phone, especially if your cell phone is out of state. Please add the local police number, 941-721-2000, ext. 4 into your cell phone and do not hesitate to call and report suspicious activity.

After Hours Emergencies If you see something that requires immediate attention (i.e. broken water pipe, red light on the lift station flashing, sewer, or electrical issues, etc.) and it can be considered an emergency, but it is after the hours that the Tropic Isles office is open, please call 941-721-8888. This is the tropic isles’ Answering service for after-hours emergencies. You will be connected to an actual person who will place a call to the Manager or Maintenance Staff person on-call to handle the situation.

Kayak-ity-Yakkayak launch use reminders

both ends of the rope. Undo one side, lower the ramp, and then cleat it off.

the 2017 Hurricane season The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season early forecast, released on April 7 from Colorado State University, calls for the number of named storms and hurricanes to be slightly below average. A total of 11 named storms, 4 projected to be hurricanes, and 2 of which may become major hurricanes are expected this season, according to the forecast prepared by CSU, which is headed by Dr. Phil Klotzbach in consultation with long-time hurricane expert Dr. William Gray. A major hurricane is one that is Category 3 or stronger. One or more of the 11 named storms forecast to develop this season could hit the U.S. or none could affect us. Therefore, residents of the coastal United States should prepare each year no matter what the forecast is. A couple of classic examples of why you need to be prepared each year occurred in 1992 and 1983.•The1992 seasonproducedonly sixnamedstormsandone

subtropical storm. However, one of those named storms was Hurricane Andrew, which devastated South Florida as a Category 5 hurricane.

• In1983therewereonlyfournamedstorms,butoneofthemwas Alicia. The Category 3 hurricane hit the Houston-Galveston area and caused almost as many direct fatalities there as Andrew did in South Florida.

In contrast, the 2010 season was active. There were 19 named storms and 12 hurricanes that formed in the Atlantic Basin. De-spite the large number of storms that year, not a single hurricane and only one tropical storm made landfall in the United States.In other words, a season can deliver many storms, but have little impact, or deliver few storms and have one or more hitting the U.S. coast with major impact. Bottom line: The U.S. is due for another hurricane strike sooner rather than later, but it’s impossible to know if that will occur this season. Keep in mind, however, that even a weak tropical storm hitting the U.S. can cause major impacts, particularly if it moves slowly, resulting in flooding rainfall. No matter what the forecast is….be prepared! The National Hurricane Center will release an updated early seasonal outlook near the end of May. The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was Arlene in April, which will be followed by the names Bret, Cindy, Don, and Emily, the National Hurricane Center said.

~~~Hurricane Preparedness~~~top 10 things to Do BEFoRE the storm
1. Make your Family Disaster Plan. It’s not hard. Talk with your family. If you need help, go online to www.tampabayprepares.org and www.floridadisaster.org or call your local emergency management agency or local chapter of the American Red Cross.
2. Refer to the Hurricane Evacuation Map inside the local Disas-ter Guide. Locate where you live and your evacuation zone. Determine if and when you would have to evacuate.
REMEMBER: All mobile home residents must evacuate, regardless of location.
If you need help determining your zone, go online or call your local emergency management office BEFORE THE STORM THREATENS.
3. Decide NOW where you would go if ordered to evacuate (a friend or relative, a hotel or motel, or as a last resort, a public shelter or out of the region). REMEMBER, if you are going to leave the area or go to a hotel, do not delay. Determine your route, leave early, and travel the shortest distance possible. Think tens of miles, not hundreds.
4. Check your Disaster Supply Kit and obtain any items you need. 5. Make plans and purchase materials, such as storm shutters, to
protect your home before the storm.6. Keep your home in good repair. Tacking down loose roofing,
securing all loose outdoor articles, trimming trees, and keeping gutters clean are good places to start.
7. Purchase a battery-powered weather alert radio and a non-electric land-line phone. Even though phone service may not be disturbed, cordless phones will not work during power outages. Cell phone signals will be overburdened, so make sure your friends and relatives know where you plan to be during the storm. Save them the heartache of looking for you.
8. Inventory your property and possessions (on paper) and take a video survey of your property. Store the inventory with in-surance and other important papers in a safe place and send a copy to a relative out of the area.
9. Make sure your street address number is clearly marked on your home.
10. Whether you rent or own your home, review your insurance with your agent now.
When You Must Evacuate If you are at Tropic Isles when an evacuation order is given, don’t panic. Move at a steady pace and be sure you leave enough time to get to where you will weather the storm. Do Not take chances with your life by staying at home or waiting until the weather turns bad!• Makesureyourdestinationisnotwithinazonethathasbeen
Health Alert – Zika Virus update With the rainy season in full swing, it pays to be ever more vigilant about standing water. The Aedes mosquito is a particularly hardy mosquito, scientists say. It’s able to breed in just a few drops of water, and its eggs — if dried out — will survive and hatch in the next
rain. So, mosquito control is critical, public health officials say, especially as heavy rains move into South Florida with the rainy season. What can you do? Drain standing water from pots, old tires, or containers outside every week. Keep swimming pools clean and properly maintained. Use air conditioning, window screens, or mosquito nets to keep bugs outdoors. For the latest updates, call the state’s Zika information hotline at 855-622-6735, or go to cdc.gov/zika.
Florida’s Rainy season The wet, or rainy season, in Central Florida lasts an average of five months. It generally begins in late May and runs through mid-October. 61% of our total annual rainfall is received during these five months. There really isn’t a definitive start day or time, but there are a few signals that alert us to the fact that the rainy season may be beginning. •ColdfrontsstopmovingthroughCentralFlorida. •Frequent(almostdaily)showersand/orthunderstormsform,mainly along sea breeze collisions. •Thelowtemperatureanddewpointtemperature isconsis-tently 67-70 degrees. Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Melbourne, Florida, make the official call of when the wet season has begun for Central Florida.
If you are leaving the area, remember to take supplies with you. Move inland away from the storm surge and inland flooding, but it is not recommended that residents try to leave the region. Roads will be heavily congested and you run the risk of being caught on the highway without a safe refuge or running into the storm if it takes a different track.
hoTel or moTel If you plan to go to a hotel or motel, you will need to check for availability and make your reservation well in advance. Some hotels/motels have standing reservation hurricane programs and some relax their pet restrictions in an emergency. Again, make sure your destination is not in an evacuation zone. if you are at tropic isles when an evacuation order is issued, you WiLL be required to evacuate. Be prepared!
Reading Material for Vets This summer, we will continue to collect reading materials for Vets. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The Library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are dupli-cates and those books that are too old to shelve. There will be a collection box in our library and Don Stotts will take all donated reading items to Bay Pines over the summer. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it will be greatly appreciated. Can you help? We are looking for another full-time resident who would be willing to take our donated reading items to the vets at Bay Pines VA when Don stotts isn’t available this summer. if you are willing to help, please call Cindy shaw at 941-722-4037 or send an email to [email protected] .
Please Wear Your Pool/Hot tub Bracelets (“Passes”)
It is especially important during the summer months for Residents and guests to wear their bracelets at the pool/hot tub to prove that you are a resident or guest in Tropic Isles. If you have not yet received your pool bracelets, please check with the office. Section VII of our 2014 Rules and Regulations regarding the Pool and Hot Tub/Spa states:
7.2 Pool and Hot Tub/Spa Passes All Residents and their Guests must display Tropic Isles “pool passes” when using the pool and hot tub/spa facilities. Each Resident will be issued 1 “pool pass”. Temporary “pool passes” are available at the office for Guests. Residents must sign for the pool passes for their Guests. A proper ID is required to obtain pool passes. A fee may be charged for the replacement of lost “pool passes”.
Please Remember to shower Before Entering the Pool
Our 2014 Rules and Regulations state:7.5 Shower The State of Florida requires all persons using a public pool or hot tub/spa to shower immediately before entering the pool and hot tub/spa. (FS 64E- 9.008) No shampoo or soaps are permitted in the pool or hot tub/spa deck area. our shower at the pool is tucked behind the palm tree on the west side of the pool near the boat docks. it is disguised as a palm tree and after a minute or so gives you a nice warm shower to remove any soaps or oils on your skin which keeps the water in the pool and spa cleaner.
Marauder’s Fan Club The Tropic Isles’ Marauders Fan Club had 28 ticket purchasers attend the April 20th game.  The new center field electronic scoreboard is a great addition to this top-notch stadium.  Each ticket holder received a coupon for a Marauder’s baseball cap and a souvenir cup filled with the soda of their choice.  The first t-shirt toss went to Walt Dennis who made an amazing catch.  A couple of innings later, a second shirt toss fell into Jim Muckley’s lap.  Later, Gary and Vickie Rease had a winning number in their program booklet.  Vickie won a pair of osteopathic sandals which they gave to their granddaughter.   The visiting Clearwater team, the Phillies farm club, played some fantastic baseball.  Their 2nd baseman made the most outstanding play of the evening.  Now you know who won the game.  Fun was had by all. Ten Tropic Isles’ Fan Club members enjoyed watching the Ma-rauders win another ball game on May 11. The Marauders are in first place now. See how many TI residents you can identify in the pictures? (See picture pages.) The season ends the first week in September and if they keep playing as well as they have been, they will be in the playoffs. I will get group tickets in September for the playoffs.  Baseball is now using a clock which is visible to everyone in the stadium. They use it to time players’ batting and pitching speeds, and the preparation time to play between innings.  It does speed up the play of the game.  Contact Leonard Krueger if you are interested in attending a game.
Ping-Pong and Pool tournaments
The Ping Pong Tournaments were won by Jerry Turner and Paul Fudally. Congratulations to all who participated! The winners will receive an official Tropic Isles’ baseball cap which will be donated by Hank Vitan.
What’s on YouR bucket list?
When Nola Sanborn went skydiving to celebrate her 74th birth-day, she completed the one item on her bucket list! She said of her experience, “I wanted to do this most of my life and finally had the opportunity to do it. It was the most exciting and wonderful experience I have ever had in my life. Now there are family mem-bers and other friends who want to do it after seeing my video of it. If you would like to see the video, go to YouTubeNola 4/23/17 and it will come up.” Nola proudly wore the shirt a girl who went with her bought for her. It said, “Skydiving over 70”. Keep flying high, Nola! (See her pictures on the picture page.)
