Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

Jan and Dale Burbie visited Montana this summer.

Cindy and Bob Shaw ate their share of oysters during their month-long trip to the Florida Panhandle.

Terry and Dennis Foley of Montego Dr. stayed in all four National Parks in Colorado in September. Here they are in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. They also stayed in Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain and Great Sand Dunes. On the way back East in their travel trailer, they saw the Mass Ascension of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and Carlsbad Caverns.

letter From The Editor I truly believe that gratitude can be contagious, so let’s shake off the whiney and grumpy mood we can get in sometimes and for the next 23 days until Thanksgiving, let’s become beauty seekers. Let’s train our heart and mind to look for the beauty that surrounds us, the big and the small moments. It’s so easy to complain, grumble, or not to be content with our situation, our body, our home, our kids, our food, our job, our significant other, our parents, our school, our friends, and life as we know it. In an effort to be less of that and to focus our day on the joy and beauty that surrounds us, I want to challenge myself, my family, and you to be more aware of the blessings we are surrounded with each day. My hope is that you will find beauty and blessings in the mun-dane and in the beautiful, as you: wash dishes, sit in holiday traffic, stir the pot of soup, look into your loved one’s eyes, and hold your grandchild in your arms. We are constantly surrounded by small miracles. Let’s open our eyes and embrace them. Take this challenge! The challenge is about stopping to reflect and engage in a moment of thankfulness each day this month for the 23 days leading up to Thanksgiving. Give it a try and let me know your thoughts about how you did by email-ing me at [email protected] by December 10. I will print your comments in the December newsletter. Comments can remain anonymous if you wish.

GraTiTUDE1. intentionally choose it. Gratitude will never be a result of your

next purchase, success, or accomplishment. It is available in your heart right now. You will never find gratitude in life until you intentionally decide to choose it.

2. Count your blessings. A new day, a warm bed, a loving spouse, a child in your life, a unique personality, or a special talent… You have wonderful things in your life already. Gratitude quickly sets in when we begin to spend a quiet moment each day remembering them. This practice alone has the potential to change your heart and life immeasurably.

3. stop focusing on what you don’t have. Too many people never realize gratitude because they spend so much mental energy focused on what they don’t have. Throw away catalogs and advertisements that inevitably promise you more fulfill-ment and joy in life. Those things are not sold in stores—never have been, never will be.

4. Embrace humility. Humility is an essential ingredient in grat-itude. A humble heart finds satisfaction in the gifts it already possesses and demands less from others and life. Remember that no matter what your accomplishments, your life contains no more inherent value than the person sitting next to you… no matter where you may be sitting.

5. Open your eyes to those with less. Almost half the world, over three billion people, live on less than $2.50 a day.  1.1 billion people have inadequate access to clean water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Let those facts sink in for just a moment—and slowly allow gratitude and a desire to become part of the solution to take their place.

6. Find gratitude in difficulty.  It is easy to be grateful when things are going well. It can be more difficult during the trials of life: death, disease, rejection, or failure. The truth is that no one is exempt from the trials of life, but good can always be found in even the worst of times. Embracing gratitude during those trials may be the one thing that gets you through them.

in daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.

2017 Boatyard Parking stickers If you currently store a trailer/boat in the boatyard or would like to store one there, you will need to purchase a 2017 Boatyard Parking Sticker. Boat-yard Parking Stickers are available for

purchase in the Office. The BLUE sticker is valid for the entire year, January 1-December 31, 2017. “Reserved” parking is available for an additional $50. Every trailer in the Boatyard must have a current sticker placed on the upright arm or tongue of the trailer and be clearly visible. The deadline for purchasing your 2017 Boatyard sticker is January 10. To avoid paying a late fee of $25 or having your trailer towed, purchase your 2017 Boatyard Parking Sticker for the coming year before January 10th. The Boatyard has limited storage capacity and is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so get your stickers early.

~ Boat launch Permits ~ Residents, please pick up a boat launch permit at the Office. Any resident who launches their boat from the boat ramp at the Marina needs to have a launch permit. Permits are provided free to Residents. This permit should be affixed to your boat and displayed where it is clearly visible.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) Here’s their latest success story. In September, the NHN crew spent two hours helping an elderly widow clean up her yard-- trim-ming bushes, removing unwanted plants, putting down mulch, and generally giving the yard a tune-up! The work was greatly appreciated and smiles were shared by all! (See the pictures on page 27.)

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Plant sale

Neighbors Helping Neighbors will be providing an opportunity for you to purchase (annual) flowering

plants from H and H Nursery. We will be bringing in the plants for purchase, November 12 in the Auditorium during and after Saturday coffee. There are sign-up sheets in both the Yacht Club and Auditorium to get an idea of who is interested and what plants you are interested in. The plants are $1.50 or $2.00 for a 4-6 inch pot. Plants offered would include geraniums, pentas, coleus, marigolds, begonias, and melapdium (rugged small sun-flowers). We may also repeat this sale in January. Help beautify your TI piece of paradise. Any comments or questions?? Call Jan Krueger at 262-617-0710 or Sharon Williams at 941-212-4648.

Please! We Need Your Help! Again this winter, we are in need of volun-teers to help cover the pool in the evening when temperatures go below 60 degrees for a consistent period of time. It depends on the weather, but we usually begin covering the pool at some point in December or early January. It works best with teams of two people who would be willing to do it for a week or share the week with another couple. The evening volunteers would be expected to cover the pool at 10 PM and lock the gates. We will provide a quick lesson for those who haven’t done it before. We will also need some “morning people” to uncover the pool on the weekends. The maintenance staff will uncover the pool in the mornings, Monday-Friday, between 8 and 8:30 AM or when the temperature reaches 60 degrees. For the past 5 years, the pool cover has proven to be real energy saver for the Co-op, so we hope to get enough volunteers to make it happen again this year. Thanks to all those dedicated people who have done it in past years. We are also looking to get more new people involved as well, so if you enjoy using the pool, please consider volunteering. It’s easy to do and doesn’t take much of your time. Please contact Fran Bouwma at 616-284-7087 if you would be willing to help.

laughter is The Best Medicine! This is a conversation between a man and his wife.  Woman:   Do you drink beer? Man:   Yes.   Woman:   How many beers a day?   Man:   Usually about 3. Woman:   How much do you pay per beer? Man:   $5.00 which includes a tip (This is where it gets scary!)   Woman:   And how long have you been drinking?Man:   About 20 years, I suppose.Woman:   So a beer costs $5.00 and you have 3 beers a day which

puts your spending each month at $450.00.  In one year, it would be approximately $5400.00. Correct?

Man:   Correct.Woman:   If in 1 year you spend $5400.00, not accounting for infla-

tion, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000. Correct? Man:   Correct.    Woman:   Do you know that if you didn’t drink so much beer, that

money could have been put in a step-up interest savings ac-count and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?

Man:   Do you drink beer?   Woman:   No.    Man:   So where’s your Ferrari?

--------------- A man was in the 10 item express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of him had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine his delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward, looked into the cart, and asked sweetly, “So which 10 items would you like to buy?” (Wouldn’t it be great if that happened more often?)

--------------- Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, an elderly man and his wife were told there would be a 45-minute wait for a table. “Young man. We’re both 90 years old”, the husband said. “We may not have 45 minutes.” They were seated immediately.

--------------- I was always taught to respect my elders, but the older I get, the harder it is to find one.

I look forward to gaining a better understanding of what you want to see, have, and do in our community. See you then.

reading Material for Vets

This year we made arrangements to collect reading materials for Vets. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The Library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are duplicates and those books that are too old to shelve. There will be a collection box in our library and we will take all reading items that are donated to the VA at Bay Pines. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it will be greatly appreciated.

safety Tip Of The MonthiF you see someTHiNG, sAy someTHiNG!

Please be alert to your surroundings and any strangers in the park. If there are people in the pool or in the park who do not belong, please contact the Office or call the police. You do not need to confront the person, just place the call. There is a phone on the outside wall of the Yacht Club on the pool deck that can be used for emergencies or to call the police for any trespassers. Call the Palmetto Police Department with any non-emergency information at 941-721-2000, ext. 4, OR 911 with an EMERGENCY! If in doubt, CALL. We ALL need to do our part to keep Tropic Isles a safe place to live!

Zika PresentationOn September 17, Summer Saturday Coffee had

two visitors from the CDC (Center of Disease Control) of Manatee County. Tim Matthews, the commissioner for mosquito control, as well as a local police officer in Palmetto, were able to arrange for Dr. Eva Buckner of the CDC to share her knowledge of the ZIKA outbreak in Florida. As of this date, there were two LOCAL transmission outbreaks in the area surrounding Miami and eighty-six in Miami Beach. The vector, the Yellow Fever mosquito or Aedes, likes summer. On a happy note, the Aedes are dying. The counties have traps set daily and weekly, reporting that the population is dropping, leaving a minimal danger of the disease transmission. Another happy note is that fall is here and less people are traveling with school in session, leaving Florida with fewer guests from higher risk areas of the globe. Questions were entertained at the meeting. The first question being, “What are the symptoms of Zika?” Dr. Buchner said one in five of those infected show symptoms. The etiology is much like the flu with a mild fever, headache, red eyes, pain in the eyes, and malaise. The World News reports we may hear linking it with the Guillain Barre Syndrome, an auto immune disease of the nervous system, are only applicable outside of the U.S. at this date. A fetus has an increased chance of microcephaly, a smaller brain size than normal. The CDC recommends safe travel precautions

for pregnant women in high-risk areas like Puerto Rico. Trans-mission of Zika is through blood and body fluids, so this should be treated as any blood borne pathogen. This means universal precautions: protective barriers, proper hand washing (sing the Happy Birthday song), proper disposal of hazardous waste, and proper cleaning of areas contaminated with body fluids. Another question presented was regarding the length of time an infected person can pass on the live virus. The answer is 14 days for blood and a latency of a few months for semen. More information can be found regarding sexual transmission through the CDC site. Currently, a Zika vaccination is in Stage I testing using 100 subjects. Stage II will be ready soon and the goal is a preventative vaccine for the next mosquito season. Zika does not affect pets, which made many people smile. Our duties at this point are the prevention and attention to breeding grounds for mosquitoes. in our community, this would be keeping pots empty when not used, cover garbage containers, rinse out birdbaths, and note any standing water in an area as small as a bottle cap. Bromeliads can be grounds for breeding in their center and should be flushed with water weekly. “Mosquito Bits”, a granular product, can be sprinkled in large watery areas according to the directions. Any further Zika information can be found on the website www.manateemosquito.com.

Respectfully submitted, Jan Krueger and Neighbors Helping Neighbors(NHN)

recycliNG In the past, the recycling was picked up using the two (2) blue bins, but with the new contract the new, blue 64 gallon carts are now used. There are some specific instructions when setting these carts out at the curb. The cart has arrows saying “This Side to the Curb” which is the side on which the lid opens, not the handle side. This is important as Waste Management is moving to an automated one-man operation. Some areas are already being serviced in this manner, and only the 64-gallon cart that is placed at the curb in the correct manner will be serviced. If you place the small blue bins out by the curb for recycling, expect them to be taken by the vendor as they are not serviceable containers.

Javier Vargas, Deputy Director of Public Works(Note: residents who do not have a blue recycling cart at their residence when they return, should contact the Office.)

Fitness Center Notes…

Just a few reminders as more and more people are returning and will be using the Fitness Center. Please wear safe workout footwear and not street shoes on the mat floor. Much of the dirt on the floor has come from outside. Also, please wipe down the machines, mats, or any equipment you touch with the antiseptic wipes provided. Cold and flu season is just around the corner. It is not polite to leave your sweat behind. Please use any and all equipment, but do not remove anything from the room. Some weights, bands, and radios have disappeared even though they are marked with our name. Also, any booklets and instructions on the bulletin board are for all to use and should stay in the room. Report any equipment malfunctions or concerns regarding the room to the Office. Enjoy and good health to all.

Does Your Home Have Good “Curb appeal”?

Good “curb appeal” doesn’t just mean your front yard. It also covers all sides of your prop-erty. Many prospective buyers visit our park by water and see your property from the canal view. Does your backyard have items stashed back there that need to be removed or discarded? Are the weeds growing tall and your plants over-grown? Does the back of your home have mildew growing on it? Take a good look at all sides of your property and see what can be done to improve your “curb appeal” from the canal side as well as the street side. If you leave the park for an extended stay away, please remember that weeds and plants still grow and homes get mildew on them. Don’t wait until you return in the fall or winter to address the problem. Please make sure your home and yard are taken care of while you are away! Let’s all work towards great “curb appeal”, both on the street side and canal side. Thanks for all your efforts!

Co-op Owners were more than willing to give up a little accessibility in order to more fully protect their investment.  The Directors listened and concurred. Therefore, the “HOLD OPEN” code for the Yacht Club and the Auditorium will not be given to anyone. This is considered a “Maintenance Code” and not a public code. Neither the Activities Chair nor the Directors have this code and the Office and Staff have been given strict orders not to disseminate the code to anyone. So please don’t ask them for it. Activity coordinators are encouraged to have “Greeters” at the doors during events to let patrons enter. As a last resort, they may choose to prop the doors open for the start of certain events.  The doors can then be closed once the event is in session and late-comers can then use the code to enter.  The Walk-Through Codes for the Auditorium and the Yacht Club remain public (for TI residents only). That code will cause the door to lock behind you every time it closes. During season, the front doors of the Yacht Club and Auditorium will be unlocked between 8:00 -8:30 AM and locked again between 4:00 – 4:30 PM weekdays. The doors will remain locked on the weekends and holidays. Your Walk-Through Code will get you in. Exit is automatic.  The door will re-lock as it closes.  Thank you for your understanding and for helping us provide this extra layer of safety to our community.

Veterans Day – November 11

It was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month when the armistice—the end of hostilities in World War I—went into effect in 1918. Armistice Day was celebrated in 1919, became a legal holiday in 1938, and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Fly your flag to honor our 21 million vets. Happy Veterans Day to all who served and are currently serving our country. Thank you for your service!

Flocking To Florida

Winter is on the way and it is time to prepare for the annual migration. More than a million people move to Florida for the winter each year, migrating south to flee the snow, ice, and frigid cold. Millions more travel to the state on vacation. This influx creates challenges for year-round Florida residents, not the least of which is the added traffic on our roads. Here are some tips and reminders to help you navigate “snowbird season”.BE AWARE Snowbirds who aren’t well-acquainted with our roads may change lanes without warning or drive slower than others, so always devote your full attention to the traffic around you.BE PATIENT Out-of-state drivers aren’t as familiar with the roads as residents, so anticipate slower traffic and lots of it. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination.

Why Taps is Played at Funerals?(submitted by Rita Collins)

I never knew. DID YOU? If any of you have ever been to a military funeral in which taps was played, this brings out a new meaning of it. Here is something every American and Canadian should know.  We in the United States and Canada have all heard the haunting song, ‘Taps’. It is the song that gives us the lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes. But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.  Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Elli was with his men near Harrison’s Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Elli heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Cap-tain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead.  The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permis-sion of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted. The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician. The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead son’s uniform. This wish was granted. The haunting melody, we now know as ‘Taps’ used at military funerals, was born.  The words are:

Day is done. Gone the sun. From the lakes. From the hills. From the sky. All is well. Safely rest. God is nigh. Fading light. Dims the sight. And a star. Gems the sky. Gleaming bright. From afar. Drawing nigh. Falls the night. Thanks and praise. For our days. Neath the sun. Neath the stars. Neath the sky. As we go. This we know. God is nigh.

I too have felt the chills while listening to ‘Taps’, but I have never seen all the words to the song until now. I didn’t even know there was more than one verse. I also never knew the story behind the song and I didn’t know if you had either, so I thought I’d pass it along. I now have an even deeper respect for the song than I did before. Remember those lost and harmed while serving their country. Also remember those who have served and returned; and for those presently serving in the Armed Forces.

November is Manatee awareness Month

There’s something about a manatee that makes people smile. November through March, the gentle giants move inland to warmer water—and fascinated fans can see them up close. Of the dozens of places to do that, here are 3 perennial favorites. Manatee Viewing Center – Apollo Beach The Big Bend Power Plant returns warm water into a canal that becomes a manatee spa from November to April. With viewing walkways over 50 acres, it is a federally designated sanctuary.Three Sisters Springs – Crystal River This Citrus County frequently hosts 100 manatees at a time, drawn by the constant 72-degree water. Accessible by canoe or kayak, the springs feature a viewing boardwalk on a 57-acre preserve.Blue Springs State Park – Orange City The St. Johns River refuge has a population of manatees exceed-ing 300 during the coldest months. Swimming and canoeing are prohibited between November and March. The manatees have room to frolic and visitors have unobstructed views.

adopt-a-Manatee When the thought really counts, giving a holiday gift that matters is as easy as adopt-ing a manatee from Save the Manatee Club. Adopting real Florida manatees for family and friends can be done quickly online at www.savethemanatee.org or by calling the Club toll

free at 1-800-432-5646. Funds from the Club’s adoption programs go toward their conservation and education efforts to protect the popular, endangered marine mammals and their aquatic habitat. The manatees available for adoption can be viewed on the Club’s website at savethemanatee.org/adoptees.htm. Three new manatees were recently added to the list of adoptees at Blue Spring State Park including Squeaky, the youngest manatee in the adoption program, along with Rocket and Annie. An annual manatee adoption costs $25 and includes an adoption certificate and biography, both featuring a photo of the real manatee you have adopted, a membership handbook, and subscriptions to the Club’s newsletters, which feature updated reports on the mana-tees in the adoption program and a variety of other information. Shipping is free within the United States. Gift adoptions are sent with a personalized holiday message. Or, each new member who joins the Adopt-A-Manatee Program at $35 or more will receive the manatee adoption packet plus a free manatee wall calendar featuring 12 months of beautiful manatee photos and measuring 12” x 24” when open. Save the Manatee Club, an international nonprofit manatee conservation organization, has been the “voice for manatees” since 1981, when singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett co-founded the group. Holiday gift adoptions help fund rescues of injured manatees and orphaned calves; scientific research; public aware-ness projects, and conservation programs in America and around the world.  Are you interested in manatee gift adoptions for the holidays? Adopt a manatee for your grandchildren for Christmas! They can choose the one they want. What a special gift that would be! Contact Save the Manatee Club at 500 N. Maitland Ave., Mait-land, FL 32751, call 1-800-432-JOIN (5646), OR visit their website at www.savethemanatee.org where you can also sign up for the Club’s free e-newsletter. Shop for special manatee gifts in the Club’s gift catalog at shopsavethemanatee.org.

reserving Tables for Dances There is no perfect solution for the reserving of tables for the various dances at Tropic Isles.  Because of the great demand for some dances, you will choose your table when you purchase your ticket.  Yes, one person may purchase tickets for a whole group of people who want to sit together, with the understanding that additional people may join that table.  Those dances where you will choose your table when you purchase your tickets include the Christmas Dance on December 10, New Year’s Eve Dance on December 31, and the Farewell Dance on March 25.  Reserving of tables for other dances is to be determined.  Be sure to check your newsletter for detailed information each month.

Tropic isles Golf league (TiGl) Wow ...It’s November already and things are ramping up again in our fabulous Tropic Isles’ community. Activities for residents, family, and friends will soon be in full swing. Speaking of swinging, it’s time once again to get those golf clubs swinging in preparation for another “entertaining” season of play at the ever-challenging Terra Ceia Golf Course. Coordinated golf will start on Wednesday, November 23nd at which time all golfers are asked to be at the course Pro Shop and ready to play by 11:00. Groups will be drawn at 11:00 sharp with the first grouping sent off to the no. 1 tee. Tee times for Tropic Isles’ folks have been reserved for 11:15 each Wednesday starting November 2nd for those anxious and earlier returnees or permanent folks who want to get a couple of warm-up rounds in. Actual league play will again run 14 weeks from January 4th to April 5th. Once again, your league directors are looking for new members, new tournament formats, and new ideas to keep the TIGL a social and fun way to enjoy the game of golf. If you have a suggestion for league play, we’d love to hear from you. PLEASE ...don’t be shy! League membership fee for 2017 will again be $25, used for materials, prizes, and weekly snacks. Golf course fees are last reported to be unchanged from last year, however, this will be confirmed in our December article. This is a great league for golfers of any experience level. Anyone thinking about starting or getting back to the game are encour-aged to come along. We are as interested in sun, exercise, laughter, and after-golf stories as we are in any scores ...although all golfers

do try to keep those scores as low as possible. It’s sort of what the game was designed for...LOL! Anyone wanting more info should contact Rene, Karol, or Merle. This is just a sample of what kind of crazy things can happen on a golf course. Many of us are still laughing over the report of Dawn Collins teeing off on the no. 11 hole only to smack an innocent bird sunbathing next to the pond. Shocked by the impact, the bird took a few laps around the pond and settled down only to get nailed again by husband John Collins teeing off after his wife. The chances of winning the Power Ball Lottery have to be higher than that happening. The bird was not injured, but certainly woke up in a hurry. Did you know? If golfers hit a ball and it goes to the right, it’s called a “slice”. If it is hit to the left, it’s called a “hook”. Hitting it straight down the fairway is often referred to as a “miracle”. We look forward to seeing past members, new members, and guests joining in the weekly excitement. See ya’ll soon!

To all shareholders Welcome back, Snowbirds! It is good to see our community filling up again after a peaceful and warm summer. You will notice some changes when you return. The city of Palmetto has paved 28th Ave. and Tropic Isles has completed paving the northern portion of our Co-op streets. A portion of the seawall behind the Auditorium has been replaced. The outside bathrooms at the Yacht Club have been updated and refinished. The electrical project has been completed on time and at the contracted price. As of this writing, our sewer project is weeks away from being completed at a cost below our targeted cost, in spite of weeks of very heavy rainfall. These improvements have not come without problems and challenges, but I am glad to report that the Board of Directors and our new Manager effectively worked through many of the issues. Our new manager, Paul Smith, has earned his keep over and over again. Let me give you a short list of accomplishments over the past couple of months.•Thefactthatwedonothaveleaseagree-

ments with home owners has been dis-covered. This is just not good business practice and Paul is working to define a solution. When the details of the solution are defined, he will seek the Board’s approval to implement.

• Initiatedcollectioneffortswith13delinquentshareholdersthatresulted in collecting $9200.

•Developedaworking relationshipwith thecityofPalmettoMayor, the Director of Public Works, and the city of Palmetto Planning and Zoning Supervisor which will result in relief from the bulk of burdensome Impact Fees levied by the City of Pal-metto on new homes being built within Tropic Isles. Tropic Isles’ communications, have resulted in City of Palmetto leaders proposing ordinance changes, which will go into effect, if ap-proved, in November. Initial Impact Fees were $4900 per new home and would have placed our new home development costs above costs in neighboring communities. Total impact on our community could have been $171,500 extra charges on new homes. If the proposed ordinance passes as expected, Impact Fees for sewer and water only (approximately ½ of the initial Impact Fee) will be charged based upon any increase in the size of a new home vs. the old home that was on the lot.

•CollectedreimbursementsfromSPTfordamagesdonetoTropicIsles’ lift stations for the amount of $25,000. This was a difficult negotiation because the majority of the damage occurred under our former manager’s watch and was in danger of being uncollected.

Currently, we have just completed work on the 2017 budget. We will have a two and one half percent increase in maintenance fees this year. This increase is mainly driven by the need to service the debt from our major infrastructure replacements. We have just completed a new Reserve Study (the first complete reserve study in the past four years). This study gives us a firm foundation for planning the facilities replacement costs out into the future. It has been a busy summer of change and development. Our management team has a full plate of activities, but we are also looking forward to the social side of our lives ramping up as our friends from the North return.

This winter, we have had both challenges and opportunities. I am particularly excited about the potential guidance the Board of Directors will receive from the newly formed Strategic Planning Committee. This advisory committee composed of Jim Schipper, Ladd Michael, John Brazil, Deane Sumler, and Paul Smith has a mandate to make midterm (5 year) and long term (10 year) plan-ning recommendations that will allow our Co-op to meet future infrastructure needs and Co-op challenges. Additionally, we will have to work through how we proceed with the issue of security cameras. Current regulations indicate we need a shareholder vote on this issue. To pass, the majority of the votes cast must be in favor of the issue and a quorum of eligible voters must have voted.

Sincerely,Clyde Martin, Tropic Isles Co-op President

Dave Spangler and friends were fishing at Guadaloupe Island - about 140 miles west of Baja and 240 miles south of San Diego.  It was an 8-day trip out of San Diego.  On this trip, Dave caught a 100 lb. and 70 lb. yellowfin tuna among others. They also caught wahoo and yellowtail.   It’s an annual trip he makes with a friend he’s been fishing with for 50 years and others.  While he was fishing, Trish visited friends in Indio, CA.

The men’s and ladies outside restrooms at the Yacht Club were remodeled in October. Very nice! Check it out! Men’s Ladies

Lance Linke (in red) and friends caught 85 pounds of cod, haddock, and Pollock off the coast of New Hampshire in September.
