Letter From the editorIdeas for a Frugal (and Romantic!) Valentine’s Day

take time off . Take the day and spend it together. Do some simple and purely fun things that you wouldn’t ordinarily get to do. Cuddle together for a big chunk of the day and just enjoy each other instead.Make an elegant homecooked meal instead of hitting the town . Put in the time and make a wonderful meal at home. Put out a nice tablecloth, use a few candles, and make it a romantic evening at home instead of fighting the Valentine’s Day crowds out and about.if you’re going out, do something unexpected . Lots of places will be crowded on that night, so do something unusual if you’re going out on the town. Don’t go to the high-dol-lar place – instead, ask around for something quiet and secluded and undiscovered. Not only will the meal be cheaper, it will also be more memorable and distinctive.Don’t buy flowers without thought . Obviously, if your significant other would be devastated with-out flowers, pick some up, but don’t make it a requirement. Pick flowers with meaning instead of just pulling out the wallet and buying the dozen red ones.Give a thoughtful gift . It’s easy to just buy jewelry or chocolates for Valentine’s Day, but it means more (and is less expensive) if you find a gift that truly has the recipient in mind. Instead of giving a generic (and probably expensive) gift of chocolates, bake some homemade cookies instead. Take a good chocolate chip cookie recipe – and add to it an ingredient that you know your partner will like.Write a note expressing how you feel to go with that gift . A little sentimental note means a lot more than some extrava-gance. Spend some time and try to express – in your own hand-writing – how you actually feel about your partner and why that person is so important to you. No matter the gift, that note will be the part that is meaningful.Your love is about the two of you, not about other things – and enjoy it . Put on pajamas, have a drink together, and relax in the most comfortable room in your home. Give each other a massage. Hold each other. Fall asleep in each other’s arms. Get a great night’s sleep. You’ll wake up the next day physically and emotionally refreshed without spending any money at all.

idea to Ponder… .Love isn’t what you say. Love is what you do.

Long term Strategic Planning committee: (LtSP)

These are exciting times for the Tropic Isles 55+ Community! The future is here. Our Long Term Strategic Planning (LTSP) Committee is formed and weekly committee meetings are in process. Your Long Term Strategic Plan-ning committee members are: rene Belanger, John Brazil, Linda cole-man, Wayne Geoffrion, Jim Schipper, Paul Smith, and Deane Sumler. We have been developing our structure and establishing the next steps in forming a plan with “Total Community Involvement”. The first three steps are: 1. TI Residents’ Needs Assessment Survey for your input on strategic

planning.2. Town Hall meetings for direct communication on the survey results for

our priorities.3. Study Groups for the creation, development, and needs for each priority. Now is the time to “coMPLete the SurVeY”. We would like you to state your position. SurVeY—The Survey Forms have been distributed. Please review the Survey Form and respond. Your opinions, ideas, and participation are invaluable and crucial to the successful completion of a Unified Compre-hensive Long Term Strategic Plan. Open discussion and sharing of ideas and thoughts with each other is encouraged for the successful completion of the survey. This survey will be part of the foundation we will build from. When the surveys are in, we will review each category and compile the information needed to analyze and organize the data. This will take a few weeks to complete. We want your input and to hear your thoughts. the date for returning your Survey Form, to the ti office, is no later than February 10. toWN haLL--Upon placing the Survey data into a presentation format, the first TI Community Town Hall Action Meeting will be called. This is for your participation, involvement, and direction. The survey results will be discussed, categorized into priorities based on the survey, and an open question and answer period will be held. All meaningful input will be recognized and incorporated into the survey results for the development of Study Groups. SuMMer BreaK-- Have fun, enjoy family, friends, make new friends, and do whatever you want. Perhaps at some moment you will think about TI’s LTSP priorities, your needs, desires, and wants. Contact your TI friends, get their thoughts, and discuss how you want to proceed. Make your notes, get your thoughts organized, and put it in writing. STOP! The BBQ is burning, your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids are out having fun. The LTSP priorities can wait! Get back to the most important things in life.toWN haLL--Welcome back everyone! The 2nd Town Hall Action Meeting date is set for November 2017. At this meeting, we will review where we are at to date and review survey results. We encourage you to have open discussions, share overnight thoughts and new ideas. Your questions are welcome. This is when you can volunteer to be in a study group that you want to participate in. The Study Groups are where you have input and make decisions for each priority. StuDY GrouPS-- Time to go to work! The study groups will be formed for each priority project with the direction to develop, design, and pro-vide ideas and plans that consider social aspects, project estimated costs, and timelines for completing the priority project. Each study group will organize themselves, as needed. A leader, assistant, and a spokesperson will be selected. LTSP members will be connected to each study group to provide the interconnection of ideas, designs, adjacencies, and intersec-tions for each study group.

Laughter is the Best Medicine! First was the apple!

A woman ran a red traffic light and crashed into a man’s car. Both of their cars were demolished, but amazingly neither of them was hurt. After they

crawled out of their cars, the woman said, “Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days.” The man replied, “I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God!” The woman continued, “And look at this! Here’s another miracle. My car is demolished, but my bottle of 75-year old scotch didn’t break. Surely God meant for us to drink this vintage delicacy and celebrate our good fortune.” Then she handed the bottle to the man. The man nodded his head in agreement, opened it, drank half the bottle, and then handed it back to the woman. The woman took the bottle, immediately put the cap back on, and handed it back to the man. The man asks, “Aren’t you having any?” She replied, “Nah. I think I’ll just wait for the police.” (Adam ate the apple, too!)

Two antennae met on a roof, fell in love, and got married on Valentine’s Day. Their wedding ceremony wasn’t fancy. The recep-tion, however, was excellent.

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” One bright little girl replied, “Because people are sleeping.”

A mother had been teaching her three-year old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord’s Prayer for several evenings at bedtime. Caitlin would repeat after her mother the lines from the prayer right up to the end of the prayer: “Lead us not into temptation,” she prayed, “but deliver us from E-mail”.

A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” “I wouldn’t know what to say”, the girl replied. “Just say what you hear Mommy say”, the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”

homeowners’ annual Meeting Homeowners, we will meet on Monday, February 6th, at 10 AM at the Yacht Club for our Annual Meeting.  The top item on the agenda is electing a new Board and determining long range plans for the organization.   Although Homeowners do not own a share in the Co-Op, we have invested in our homes and are committed to seeing Tropic Isles grow and thrive.  TIHOA is the vehicle for speaking with one voice.  There are three openings on the Board, three opportunities to take a leadership role in the community.  See you Monday morning.

Manager’s coffee hour The Manager’s Coffee Hour will be held on February 2 at 9:30 AM in the Auditorium for an hour of casual and informative dis-cussion.  This is a great time to get to know one another. We have a new team at Tropic Isles and our goal is to help build a stronger community. I look forward to gaining a better understanding of what you want to see, have, and do in our community. See you then. Please mark your calendars for the upcoming Manager’s Coffee Hours on March 2 and April 6.

~~Special thanks~~ Thank you to all the wonderful people who started my family’s Christmas off with amazing hospitality, fun festivities, and fabu-lous food at the Christmas Eve Social. My grandkids were in awe of Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Deborah Miller-Phillips

Thanks to all those people who have volunteered to cover and uncover the pool this winter. Many of you have volunteered every year since we started the process in 2011 and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks also to Fran Bouwma for recruiting all the volunteers.

Cindy Shaw, Pool Cover Co-ordinator I would like to thank everyone who sent their condolences to me at the time of my twin sister Joan’s passing. Your thoughtful-ness and caring words meant so much to me at that most difficult time. Tropic Isles is full of so many wonderful people. Thank you!

Jean Volkens

Thank you for the get-well card from all the folks at Coffee. It was so kind of everyone to think of me and I really appreciated it!

Ann Harwood

A special thanks to Pam and Gary White for placing the beautiful lighting around the park during the Christmas holidays!

Jean Volkens

A very special thanks to Palmetto Police Chief, Scott Tyler, for his very informative talk at “Coffee ‘n Conversations”.  He is a good friend to Tropic Isles and we are a lot smarter and safer because of his interest.  Thanks also to Barbara Curtis who provided the doughnuts we all enjoyed.

Jan Vern, HOA President

Thanks to the Activity Committee for their monetary donation for the refreshments at the Yuletide Gathering in December.

Safety tips of the MonthPalmetto Police Chief Tyler

Check bank accounts at least weekly. Identity thieves often begin to access funds by taking rela-

tively small amounts from an account. If it goes unnoticed, they come back for larger amounts. So, it’s good to be vigilant and to question even very small discrepancies in your account balances. Drivers. Do NOT cross those yellow lines.  Chief Tyler noted that 10th Street at the CVS/Walgreens intersection is particularly troublesome because drivers on 10th Street frequently cross the yellow lines to get to the left turn lane to turn north on 8th Ave-nue.  Officers allow a little leeway, but have been issuing citations and warnings there because the practice of crossing the yellow lines into oncoming traffic to save a few seconds causes accidents. Be aware of strangers in the Tropic Isles’ community. If you see strangers on our private streets who look or act suspicious, old or young, please call the Palmetto Police Department to report it at 721-2000, Ext. 4. Do not confront them. Just make the call. We at the Palmetto Police Department are aware of citizens that celebrate holidays by discharging firearms into the air. This practice is far more dangerous than many people realize. A bullet fired into the air can reach an altitude of up to two miles. As the bullet falls downward, it can reach a speed of 300 feet per second or more. A bullet traveling at that speed could cause injury, possibly even penetrating the human skull. The “ danger zone” of a single falling bullet may encompass nearly two miles. Discharging a firearm in this manner is also a crime. Check out the Palmetto Police Department Facebook page for more safety tips.

tropical red hatters The Tropical Red Hatters will hold their monthly meeting Wednesday, February 1 at 10 AM in the Auditorium. This will be the last meeting for Jeanne Smith as Queen due to health concerns.  Those in-

terested in leading this fun-loving group can make their presence known and an election will be held at the March meeting.  The new Queen will select her assistant. Save the Date:  Sunday, February 26 will be the annual Ice Cream Social from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Ice cream sundaes with a variety of toppings will be served in the Auditorium. The cost per ticket is $3.00. Contact any Red Hatter or call Ann Miller at 941-729-5406.  There will be games, raffles, “feather your nest”, 50/50, and fun.  Come socialize with your Tropic Isles’ neighbors! Tickets will also be sold at the door. The Red Hatters received a thank you from Bay Pines VA Health-care System that said in part, “We would like to extend our appre-ciation to you for your donations.  Your thoughtfulness reflects the concern that you feel for our Veterans and for the service they provided to all of us while in service to our country.  Without your support, we could not provide for the smaller niceties that make hospitalization more bearable.”

Ann M. Miller, Tropical Red Hatters

Library News

One hundred twenty-one new additions were added to our library during the month of December. We received 21 mysteries, 15 large print books, 14 romances, 11 paperback fiction books, and 12 hard cover books. Other donations included inspirational and non-fiction books, games and puzzles, items for our children’s section, and 4 audio books. Our DVD section continues to expand. We received 21 new DVD’s in December. The Library Committee is continuing to work to reduce the number of VHS tapes to make room for the more popular DVD’s. If you have donations to the Tropic Isles’ Library, place those items in the return basket located beside the desk. The grey container beneath the magazine rack is used for donations made to the veterans. Magazines and books are given to the residents of the VA at Bay Pines. The veterans have appreciated our contri-butions very much. The “X” marked books on the book rack are free and do not need to be returned to the library. We do appreciate your donations. It is your support that gives our library a variety of items from which to choose. However, due to limited space, we must request that a book’s copyright date be 2010 or later.  Everyone enjoys magazines but, again, due to the limited space, we can only display the present and past month of an issue. For new residents and visitors, our library operates on the honor system.  You do not need to check out items you wish to borrow. We simply ask that you return your items to the basket by the desk.  A library helper will put them back where they belong.   We continue to accept “In Memory” books. If you would like more information, please call Phyllis Ann Smith (941-932-5654). The many snowflakes adorning the library walls were made by one of our volunteers, Muriel Van Wormer. Thank you, Muriel. As always, many thanks to all of you who have donated to our library. Our next meeting will be held in the library at 9 AM on Saturday, February 11.

calling all Fishermen and Women! Would you like to share a picture of your “catch of the day” from the nearby waters around Tropic Isles? Send it to [email protected] and it can be published in the next issue of the Breezes. Please include a sentence or two about where it was caught, what species it is, and its size. Any fish pictures will do—large or small---fish, that is!

tropic isles Golf League (tiGL) The 2017 Tropic Isles’ Golf League season got off and running on January 4th with lots of returning members, a few new folks, and a handful of return-

ees still to join the weekly fray. The season opening round was particularly exciting with three “almost” holes in one! That’s right ...3! Don Sandford set the pace by coming within inches of an ace on #11. Not to be undone, Shirley Norman took on the ev-er-challenging and difficult #13 hole by flying the creek, dodging the trap, and rolling within a foot of the cup! We are including a picture of Shirley tapping in for the birdie! Fred Whitley, who was reportedly playing with a red-hot putter, stepped up to the tee on #16 and smacked his drive right to the pin, almost dropping in, but ending up next to the cup. That must have got Fred’s adrenalin running as the very next hole, #17, was the weekly cash $ cup hole which Fred claimed with another beautiful shot, beating out Roger Maulding, who already had his hand on the purse! It was a fabulous day for Fred and a fun round for all to hear about at the “après golf” social. During other rounds, the ladies continued their dominance on some of the designated par 3’s. Lana Artimovich and Gail Stewart kept the femme-fatales smiling. The guys, not being too disgrun-tled, were finally able to make their presence known after John Collins claimed a cash cup followed by Rene Belanger grabbing a 2 week carry over pot, and then the winnings of Don and Fred as noted above. So – the challenge of the sexes continues with lots of laughs and the Par 3 prize holes being anyone’s game. Stay tuned! The league is looking at 3 fun tournaments this year – Janu-ary 18, February 22, and March 29. Each tournament will be a non-competitive, fun format where you play your best, BUT your “best” might not be good enough, as anything can happen in these events. The TIGL plays each Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Terra Ceia Golf Course. We are a friendly and sometimes rowdy group, who welcome new players and guests to come out and take on this unforgiving and ever-challenging par 62 course. The advice from all is ... “BRING LOTS OF BALLS” ... and have fun! Golf funny: A golfer says to his friend, “I’m really concerned about the new pro here. He continually tries to correct my stance.” The friend replies, “That’s OK! He’s only trying to help your game.” The golfer responds, “But not when I’m standing at the urinal! “

Guests are asked to arrive at the port’s north entrance with government-issued photo identification by 9:30 AM. tropic isles’ Marina News What a great January it was for the Marina! Our friends from the North are back and things are bustling. The Marina’s open house in December

was a huge success. 170 hot dogs were grilled and served. Many people came and saw what your Marina staff has accomplished and just what the Marina can provide for our residents. Earlier in December, the Christmas Boat Parade started at the Marina with a bang and finished there with a cold beverage. Kudos to Bob Shaw for researching and ultimately purchasing a new, much faster gas pump. 90% octane, ethanol free gas is currently available. From ice cream to tackle to live bait and more, the prices are lower at your Marina. Our hours are from 7 AM to 5 PM, seven days a week. Currently the Marina has a staff of 4 employees. If you’re interested in being part of the staff, please apply at the Marina or the Tropic Isles’ Office.

Our recent blood drive resulted in 15 units of blood. Remember, each donation can save up to three lives, so that means 45 patients could benefit from the lifesaving efforts of our blood donors. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. The blood donated at our blood drive was likely transfused into a patient within 48 to 72 hours. The turnaround is that fast and is that constant. About 5 million people need blood every year, but people donate less often in the winter months because of the holidays, travel, bad weather, colds, and flu. our next blood drive is scheduled for February 17 from 8 aM to 12 noon . Please give!

happy Birthday, Jim Kelly, Sr . My dad turned 95 years old on December 29, 2016. A party was thrown in his honor on Basin Street. Over 75 people attended. Dad has been coming down to Tropic Isles since 1978. (He might be the oldest resident and longest “snow bird” in the park.) He lost my Mom, Leila Kelly, after 66

years of marriage in 2010. He is an avid euchre player and loves his daily cocktails. When asked how it was to be 95 years old, he stated “ Don’t know yet! Just got there!”

Groundhog Day Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday  cele-brated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early. If

it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow, retreat into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks. Modern customs of the holiday involve celebrations where early morning festivals are held to watch the groundhog emerge from its burrow. The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with Punxsutawney Phil, where crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886. Groundhog Day, already a widely recognized and popular tradition, received widespread attention as a result of the 1993 film Groundhog Day. The celebration began as a Pennsyl-vania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries. In western countries in the Northern Hemisphere, the official first day of spring is almost seven weeks (46–48 days) after Groundhog Day, on March 20 or March 21. According to Groundhog Day organizers, the rodents’ forecasts are accurate 75% to 90% of the time. However, a Canadian study for 13 cities in the past 30 to 40 years found that the weather patterns predicted on Groundhog Day were only 37% accurate over that same time period.  According to the Storm Fax Weather Almanac and records kept since 1887, Punxsutawney Phil’s weath-er predictions have been correct 39% of the time. The National Climatic Data Center has described the forecasts as “on average, inaccurate” and stated that “the groundhog has shown no talent for predicting the arrival of spring, especially in recent years.”

Writer’s Group From time to time, the members of the Writer’s Group will be sharing some of their work. Below is a poem written by Lois Watson.

are you callinG me a naG?I heard you talking over there.I don’t think you’re being fair.

Were you saying I’m a nag?You didn’t take out the garbage bag.

Please stop slamming the front door. You’re dripping coffee on the floor.

You made me sound like I’m a grouch. Please keep your feet off our new couch.

What made you say those things to him?Did you wipe your feet before you came in?

Why would you say a thing like that? You’re in the house, remove your hat.

You never notice the things I do.Turn the TV down when I’m talking to you.

I’m still looking at that garbage bag.Your hat’s still on……

Yes, I’m a nag!---Lois Watson

are You ready For Some Football????????

Super Bowl Sunday has always been on a Sunday and is usu-ally the last Sunday in January. However, for the first time in its history, it was held in February on February 3, 2002. The reason is, due to the September 11, 2001 attacks, the television schedules were all delayed by one week.  The Super Bowl was shown on the Fox network and not on one of the main television stations --ABC, CBS, or NBC also. It was also held on Sunday, February 1st for 2004 and on Sunday, February 6, 2005. It is solely a United States celebration. Just like in the old days when the old king was dethroned and a new king crowned at the start of the new year, the Super Bowl determines who wears the crown in football after a long series of elimination games. The opponents are the winning teams from the AFL (American Football League) and the NFL (National Football League) that play each other at a pre-selected city (usually in a warmer climate or one with a covered stadium). Super Bowl Sunday has become more than just a championship play-off event.  In some cases, it is a national holiday.  It is said that even the criminals take Super Bowl Sunday off. In 1985, when the San Francisco 49ers played the Super Bowl in Palo Alto, CA, the crime rate in San Francisco dropped 75%. For some wives, it seems that the Super Bowl has gone on for-ever, but it actually began on January 15, 1967 in the Los Angeles Coliseum with the Green Bay Packers beating the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.

hoW The super boWl GoT sTarTed! How did the name “Super Bowl” get started?  Originally, many suggested it be titled, “The Big One” or “The Final Game”, but a Texas financier and owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, Lamar Hunt, came up with the idea of calling it “The Super Bowl” after watching his daughter play with a Super Ball - a small, high-bounc-ing ball very popular at that time.  Ironic, that it’s a woman that was responsible for naming this well-loved, beloved male annual event! The games have been identified with Roman numerals rather than numbers since 1971.  It wasn’t until Super Bowl IV in 1970 that the title, “Super Bowl”, appeared on tickets. However, on June 4, 2014, it was announced that in 2016, Super Bowl L would not be in Roman numerals.  They didn’t like the L as 50. As a result, they broke from tradition for one year and used “50” in the logo.  However, for 2017, they will return to the Roman numerals and use LI to represent 51 once again.

pre-Game shoWs It took a few years before the pre-game show became a tradi-tion.  In 1976, Super Bowl X broadcast it on television. Super Bowl XII in 1978 was the first indoor game and drew the largest crowd at that time to have ever watched a sporting event on television.  Super Bowl XV in 1981, displayed a huge yellow ribbon (bow) over the main entrance of the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans to commemorate the 52 American hostages who had just been released by Iran after 444 days in captivity. It was NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle who made sure that the Super Bowl provided entertainment on a big, razzle dazzle scale. The first pre-game show released 4,000 pigeons and continuing pre-game shows have featured top Hollywood celebrities and

jets with tailing plumes of dyed smoke of red, white, and blue.  Another tradition of the pre-game show is who will sing the “Star Spangled Banner”?  It is usually sung by a well-known American pop singer, but there have been exceptions.  More popular = more money!  The price of television advertising during the Super Bowl went from $85,000 a minute to $200,000.  By Super Bowl XIX, advertising was around $1 million.  Today a Super Bowl ad will run $2 million or more, depending on how long, and in what time slot of the game it’s shown.  As of 2016, a 30-second ad cost $5 million. Today, the ads and even the half-time show entertainment has become just as important as the game itself. Ironically, some ad-vertisers start running promos of their ads days before the Super Bowl to promote their ads because they paid so much!  Today, there is approximately 45 minutes of commercials compared to 60 minutes of actual game time. The Super Bowl, it seems, has gotten to be the premiere event for TV commercials.  Many products will wait to present their latest and best commercial during the game because they know that this is when they’ll get the most viewers. If companies aren’t buying commercials, there is still the subtle approach to getting yourself seen during the Super Bowl.  Companies put their logos on seat cushions, hats, mugs, to as high in the sky as the Goodyear Blimp!  Did you know that every year the NFL has a lottery in which 500 names are drawn out of a hat for a chance to buy a pair of Super Bowl tickets at their face value?  This happens sometimes between February 1st and June 1st.  The details for this are posted on the NFC’s official website in advance, so check it out! The Super Bowl trophy is given to the winning team and is named after Vince Lombardi, whose game plan was “Attack, Attack, Attack!”  The trophy is symbolic of the values Lombardi exemplified and the excellence he demanded of his players. Ev-eryone wins at the Super Bowl you might say.  For Super Bowl 50 (2016), members of the winning team each received $102,000, but the losing team also got paid as well.  Each losing team member received half that or $51,000.
