Dennis has always known about Tropic Isles since living here, vis- iting Snead Island, and boating on the Manatee River. Dennis and Rosa were looking for a safe place to live with things to do in a 55+ community. They liked Palmetto and decided to find a home in Tropic Isles. We know you’ll love it here in our little piece of paradise! Please welcome HAL and DENISE DONNELLY at 138 Bahia Dr. They will be part-time residents from Irmo, SC. They have a blended family of six children and nine grandchildren. Hal is a retired Professional Electrical Engineer and he and Denise own a travel company. They are offering their neighbors discounts on River Cruises worldwide. They enjoy the warm winter weather in Florida. While vacationing each year in Sarasota, they visited with Denise’s father, at a condo- minium nearby and recently discovered Tropic Isles. That’s when they decided to buy a lot and move their 5th wheel to its current location. They both enjoy boating in the warmer weather, while traveling worldwide during the year. Please give Hal and Denise a warm, Tropic Isles’ welcome. Published by On Trac Publishing, P.O. Nancy Barango and Randy Nemetz rode off with Cap-tain Jim Teeter to Tampa Bay catching numerous grouper, mackerel, and snapper. Ten were kept in the freezer. 8 AM to noon was the perfect time for the trip.

Fish on! Sherry Novak caught this black drum in the northern end of Terra Ceia Bay on Memorial Day. She says, “I’m always so excited when I catch something that I can actually keep and eat.”

aluminum Cans The Boosters have decided to stop collecting cans to recycle until the “climate” improves with the Coronavirus. The aluminum can collection box is closed, and you can simply throw your aluminum cans in your blue recycle bin at home. They did not think it was a good idea to continue bagging cans that came from everyone’s households during this time. Thank you for your cooper-ation in this matter.

terra Ceia aquatic Preserve Terra Ceia Bay has been designat-ed as one of Florida’s 42 Aquatic Preserves. These exceptional estu-aries and state-owned submerged lands were set aside by the legisla-

ture to be preserved in their essentially natural or existing condition. Seagrass, mangroves, and salt marshes are historically productive habitats that benefit from this designation. The Aquatic Preserves support a great diversity of fish, shellfish, birds, reptiles, and mam-mals, and are protected through resource management, research, monitoring, and education. Only through careful management can these resources be preserved for the enjoyment of future genera-tions. Protect Terra Ceia Bay!

What Do You Know about snead island?

snead island is a small island near Bra-denton, Florida. Emerson Point Pre-serve  is a365acrepreserveoperatedby Manatee County on the western end of Snead Island. It includes several Na-tive American mounds in the Portavant Mound Site. The first officially recorded non-native settler to Snead Island was Edward Sneed, who established a homestead in 1843 under the Armed Occupation Act of 1842. The island was named for its first settler. In newspapers and other documents, the name can be found spelled as both Sneed Island and Snead Island, as well as Sneed’s Island and Snead’s Island. Eventually the misspelling became the official name of the island. Despite its name, it was not much of an island. Snead Island was only separated from the Palmetto mainland by a shallow mudflat that was home to many oysters and mangroves. It was frequently used by small sailing vessels as a shortcut to Terra Ceia Bay, but it was nearly dry during low tide. In 1900, the channel, called the “Cut-Off” was dredged deep enough to allow steamers to pass. This dredging solidified Snead Island’s status as a legitimate island, and a barge-ferry had to be used to connect the island to the mainland before a bridge was built. In 1920, the Davis Toll Bridge which connected the towns of Manatee and Palmetto was disassembled and its pieces were used to create the Snead Island Bridge.

Have You Visited the Portavant indian Mound in emerson Point

Preserve on snead island? The Portavant Indian Mound is an archaeological site on Snead Is-land within the Emerson Point Preserve, just west of Palmetto, Florida. On December 23, 1994, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Portavant Mound (or Snead Island Temple Mound) is one of fifteen or more “temple mounds” produced by the Safety Harbor cul-ture (900–1725) found in the vicinity of Tampa Bay. The mound is four meters high and has a flat top. Unlike other “temple mounds” around the Tampa Bay area, the Portavant Mound does not have a ramp to the top of the mound. There is a lower platform that abuts the main mound. The Portavant Mound was made from soil mixed with debris from middens. (A midden is an old dump for domestic waste which may consist of animal bone, human excrement, botanical material, mollusk shells, sherds, lithics, and other artifacts and ecofacts asso-ciated with past human occupation.) Several other mounds, also consisting of soil mixed with midden debris, are near the “temple mound”. The Portavant Mound site has been the target of a stabilization project to protect the mounds from damage from river erosion, looting, foot traffic, and exotic vegetation.

Frazzled? From an article written by Clara Parker as seen in the

North River News When the final shock of this global crisis starts to reside and we are faced with our “new normal”, we will need to find ways to feel empowered, to reclaim a sense of stability and security. The pandemic has affected each one of us and created unwanted stress, leaving us frazzled. To keep stress symptoms from becoming chronic, we need to take care of ourselves the same way we take care of others. If you have 5 SECONDS…BREATHE! This is the quickest way to interrupt the body’s stress reaction. Increased heart rate and blood pressure are not under voluntary control. Changing your breathing pattern from fast and shallow to slow and deep signals the body to calm down. Practice belly breathing. Breathe in…out…and pause. Repeat 10 times. If you have 5 MINUTES…MOVE! Physical activity burns off adrena-line that floods your body when you are overwhelmed. Best: Dancing which restores a stress-relieving sense of control. You hear the rhythm of the music and know the next beat will follow. If you have 5 HOURS…PLAY! Set aside time to do whatever helps you feel renewed. Once a week is ideal. These breaks promote emo-tional and physical health and give you more energy to tackle what lies ahead. Change your internal dialog. Every time you catch yourself thinking “I should…”, substitute with “It would be nice if I could…” Then follow with “It’s ok for me not to…”. With practice, you’ll start to believe it!

National anthem lyrics(clip and save)

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly sworeThat the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,A home and a country should leave us no more!Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slaveFrom the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall standBetween their loved home and the war’s desolation!Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued landPraise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

safety tip of the Month If You See Something, Say Something!

Please be alert to your surroundings and any strang-ers in the park. If there are people in the pool or in the park who do not belong, please contact the Office AND

call the police. You do not need to confront the person, just place the call. There is a phone on the outside wall of the Yacht Club on the pool deck and inside the Yacht Club and Auditorium that can be used for emergencies or to call the police for any trespassers. Call the Palmetto Police Department with any non-emergency information at 941- 721-2000, ext. 4, OR 911 with an EMERGENCY! If in doubt, CALL. We ALL need to do our part to keep Tropic Isles a safe place to live! Palmetto Police -local Number 941-721-2000, ext . 4 . Many Tropic Isles’ snowbirds have headed north and as our population decreases, the incidents of pool trespass-ers, theft, and vandalism may increase. Please remember that our local Palmetto Police are very prompt in their response time IF we call them. Please add the local Palmetto Police number to your cell phone and do not hesitate to call and report suspicious activity in our community.

Dorothy sparling passed away on May 17 after turn-ing96onFebruary1,2020.SheandBudwerelong-timeresidents of Tropic Isles on 13th St. W. Bud’s parents lived in the park first. Dorothy was an organizer and an excellent secretary who took perfect shorthand. Dorothy was an inspiration to so many of us. She was involved in all of the park functions, always took the lead to plan and help carry out park events, gave freely of her time to serve on Boards for various park activities and festivities including the Boat Club for years. She also served as Secretary of the Activity Board serving under Rich Van Wicklen for at least a decade. He said she was the best! She served as TIPOA secretary for several years. She performed in all of the Tropicaires shows when she was healthy and able to do so. Dorothy was the sunshine reporter for Saturday Coffee Hour for a long time. Dorothy had a huge impact as a worker and giver to make Tropic Isles a wonderful and better place to live. RIP Dorothy. Your work on Earth is done. We thank you, Lord, for people like Dorothy.   Our friend and neighbor, tony latella, of Marina Dr. unexpectantly passed away in May. We give our deepest sympathy to his dear wife Lucy, Ms. Love, and his family. Tony was a very interesting fellow and was often called our “park mayor”. Tony stood up for what he believed in. He will truly be missed in the park. Tony, may you rest in peace.

tropic isles’ July 4 luncheon – CaNCelleD Hello, friends and residents. We hope everyone is social distanc-ing and staying safe. In this spirit, we will not be hosting the annual July 4 lunch at the Yacht Club. Over the years, our TI July 4 event has continued to grow in attendance, and we feel it would not be in anyone’s best interest to gather in such a large group. Please enjoy your own personal July 4 celebration or small group gathering and we look forward to celebrating in 2021!

The Entertainment Committee

~~NeW tropic isles’ July 4 Celebration NeW~~

Friends and residents of Tropic Isles, It’s a challenging time for all. With hope and prayer, all will become more normal in the future. Although we will not be having a TI July 4 luncheon at the Yacht Club, we would like to invite all to a July 4 dusk celebration – “SPARKLE our PARK” with prayers and light. We will be distributing sparklers on July 3, under the Auditorium canopy from 10 AM-11 AM. At sunset, JULY 4, (approx. 8:30 PM), stand at the end of your driveway and light your sparkler to celebrate our nation’s birthday and our love for each other.

Activity Committee

Sparkler Precautions will be included with every bag of sparklers:

· Light only one sparkler at a time.· Don’t hand a lighted sparkler to another person. Instead, hand over

an unlit sparkler and then light it.· Use the six feet distancing rule while using sparklers.· Never throw a lit sparkler. Do not throw spent sparklers in our basin

or marina waters.· Remain standing while using sparklers, hold them at arm’s length,

and never run while holding them.· Don’t hold a child in your arms while using sparklers.· Wear closed-toe shoes to prevent foot burns.· Drop spent sparklers in a bucket of water because they can remain

hot long after the flame has gone out. Do not throw hot sparklers in the trash. Let them cool off first.

ANNA mArIA cItY PIEr rEOPENS Nearly three years after Hurricane Irma destroyed the historic Anna Maria City Pier, the rebuilt, popular landmark partially reopened on June 19. Initially, Anna Maria City Pier will be open for all visitors, sightseers, and anglers from 8 AM to 5 PM Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only, and there will be no food, beverage, or bait and tackle service available. Alcoholic beverages won’t be allowed at the pier, but visitors and anglers may bring sandwiches and a cooler. There will be seating available for fishing and sightseeing. Visitors will need to practice social distancing and face masks are optional. An unfinished bit of business is completion of the interiors of the restaurant and bait shop at the far end of the pier. Negotiations with a new potential tenant — The Ugly Grouper Restaurant from Holmes Beach — for the pier restaurant concession operation is in progress. A grand re-opening will be held at some point in the near future.

to Venture out or Not to Venture out, that is the Question?

Because our community is reopening, can we safely ven-ture out? The answer depends on where you live and what precautions you want to take. Regardless of your feelings about reopening guidance, you’ll likely encounter more people outside the home than a few weeks ago. So here are strategies from public health experts to reduce transmis-sion.  Guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on reopening emphasizes the importance of cleaning any facilities that haven’t been open for a while.

at Restaurants In some states,  restaurants are allowed to seat patrons at 25% capacity. But THE CDC stressed the importance of still opting for takeout or delivery whenever possible. If you choose to sit down, then:•Wearafacemask,andonlyremoveittoeatyourfood.•Don’teatwithyourhands.•Bringyourownmaterials todisinfectyourseats, table, utensils,

menu, etc.•Sitoutside.•Optforquieterrestaurantsasloudtalkingcanprojectgermsinto

the air.•Skipbarsifthere’sahighcasecountinyourarea.•Keepyourgroupseparatefromthosearoundyou.

at Hairdressers and salons Depending on your risk of severe illness from the coronavirus, consider forgoing appointments at places that require close contact. Otherwise, you should:•Callaheadtofindoutaboutwhatprotocolthey’refollowing.Hand

hygiene for people providing these services is crucial.•Onlygo toplaces that spaceout timingof appointmentsand

physically distance customers.•Ask your stylist to wear a face mask, and wear one yourself. Try one

that goes around the ears, so your hair is still accessible.

at stores While essential businesses have stayed open, other retailers are opening their doors. In general, follow the same guidance you would at a grocery store, like minimizing time spent, social distancing while in the store, and practicing hand hygiene as soon as you leave. Also:•Wearafacemask.•Goduringoff-hours.•Takeadvantageofoptionsthatreduceyourtimeinthestore,like

curbside pickup.•Payonlineoroverthephoneaheadoftime.•Prioritizestoresthathaveprocessestoreduceinfection,suchas

limiting the number of people inside and spacing out lines.•Considerorderingonlineorwaitinguntiltheoutbreakhasslowed

outdoors In general, the outdoors have a lower risk of transmission than indoors, but they’re not completely safe, so try to follow these mea-sures:•Practicesocialdistancingandavoidcrowdedlocations.•Don’tparticipateingroupactivitieswithpeopleyou’renotquar-

antining with.•Wheneveryou’renotabletomaintainsocialdistance,wearamask.• Iftheparkinglotofyourdestinationiscrowded,considergoing

somewhere else.

Gyms Many gyms have restrictions in place to limit transmission in their facilities, such as taking visitors’ temperatures, but there’s still a risk from close proximity to people breathing heavily. Follow these prac-tices:•Callaheadandaskstafftoexplainindetailnewsafetyprotocol.•Keepatleast6feetofdistance,butpreferablymore.•Wearamask.•Don’texercisenexttoorbehindsomeone.•Bringyourowntowelandwaterbottle.•Wipedownequipmentyourself.•Prioritizevirtualclassesandtraining.•Stayawayfromotherpeopleinswimmingpools.•Skipthegymaltogetherifyou’rehighrisk.

General Guidance To be as safe as possible, especially if you’re at high risk of devel-oping severe symptoms  from the coronavirus, don’t change your behavior because your state is reopening. Here are some other measures to follow whenever you leave your home:•Wear a face mask, especially if youcomewithin6 feetofother

accurate reading, triple the reported case count. Lastly, think critically about the consequences of leaving your home for a nonessential activity. (Excerpts taken from an article written by Maura Hohman, editor for Today.com.)

submissions to the Breezes Newsletter

Submissions to the Breezes should be sent to Cindy Shaw at [email protected]. The deadline is the 10th of each month for the following month. If you are unable to make a submission using email, please bring a paper copy to the Office or call 941- 722-4037. Residents, please be patient with your Block Captain when waiting for delivery of your newsletter. They will deliver the Breezes to you as soon as they can, once they have been notified by me. Be sure to thank your Block Captain for the volunteer work that they do, especially in the heat of the summer.

tropic isles’ Cookbook Friends and fellow “safer at home” residents in Tropic Isles! If you’re as bored and tired of your own cooking and recipes as I am with mine - experiment with a new

recipe! The TROPIC ISLES’ COOKBOOK is still available with over 50 wonderful recipes to try and enjoy. If you’re interested in a Tropic Isles’ Cookbook–[email protected] and I will place a cookbook in a baggie for you on our carport table and you can stop by and pick it up. No socializing! The cookbook and baggie will be sanitized, and the baggie will be labeled with your name. I will keep a journal and collect payment this fall/winter when we are no longer under such extreme concerns with handling cash.

Reading Material for Vets We continue to collect reading materials for Vets. Magazines are great (for men or women), as are books. The Library at Tropic Isles will be donating any books that are duplicates and those books that are too old to shelve. It may seem like

a small thing to do, but it is always greatly appreciated. If anyone is heading to the VA and you would be willing to deliver the reading materials, please give Irene Casey a call.

Boat Club NewsI hope all of the Tropic Isles’ Boat Club members

are well and staying healthy. Michigan is finally starting to open up, little by little, and it is so very needed by so many. Members in other states, as well as Florida, are starting to get outside and enjoy nature and just be active again. We are looking forward to next year when things open back up completely, and we can all enjoy the beautiful park we live in. One of the ongoing issues you should be aware of is the Boat-yard maintenance. Most of you are probably aware that over the last many years the Boatyard has been maintained by volunteer members of the Boat Club. The Boatyard Committee has made some recommendations to the Co-op Management, with regards to keeping the yard in top shape after all the work that went into it this year. The trees and brush on the north and west sides of the yard were trimmed back and the old inoperable trailers were removed, as well as quite a bit of “junk”. This was all done by volunteers. There is some misconception that the Boat Club leases the ground for the Boatyard, and this is not true. The lease is held by the Co-op and the Co-op is responsible, as noted in your license agreement when you sign to store your boat or trailer. All decisions are ultimately made by the Co-op Management and they should be your main contact. Hopefully, Management will work with the Boatyard Committee in maintaining the yard so additional expenses will not be passed down to the members. A lot of work goes into keeping the yard mowed and in good shape and to hire an outside firm to do this would be quite expensive. Once again. if you have any questions about the Boatyard license agreement or operation of the yard, you should contact the Tropic Isles’ Management. In closing, I would like to pass along condolences to the Frystak family in the loss of their granddaughter. Jerry and Karol have been active, long-time members in the Boat Club and we wish them well. Stay safe and enjoy your summer.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN)

NHN will continue throughout the summer to help with any resi-dent needs as the circumstances will allow.  Our volunteers will aid residents with various jobs including weeding, yard work, power washing, clearing carports, simple maintenance jobs, and compliance issues. Specific reasons for our help include illness, aging, financial difficulties, or just to lend a helping hand. We have compiled a list of vendors and various agencies that can also offer help and guidance. Check out our bulletin board in the Auditorium where we list them. Call the people listed below or the Office personnel for help.

think about this! When I wear a mask in public:

♦ I want you to know that I am educat-ed enough to know that I could be asymptomatic and still give you the virus.

♦ No, I don’t “live in fear” of the virus. I just want to be part of the solution, not the problem.

♦ I don’t feel like the “government is controlling me.” I feel like I’m being a contributing adult to society and I want to teach others the same.

♦ The world doesn’t revolve around me. It’s not all about me and my comfort.

♦ If we all could live with other people’s consideration in mind, this whole world would be a much better place.

♦ Wearing a mask doesn’t make me weak, scared, stupid, or even “controlled.” It makes me considerate.

♦ When you think about how you look, how uncomfortable it is, or what others think of you, just imagine someone close to you - a child, a father, a mother, grandparent, aunt, or uncle - choking on a respirator, alone without you or any family member allowed at their bedside.

♦ Ask yourself if you could have sucked it up a little for them.

Her favorite holidays are Christmas and Easter. Miley opens her presents at Christmas. On Easter, we have an Easter egg hunt with the neighbors. She loves popping open the eggs for a treat.

This is Yeti Smith. She belongs to Mark and Phyllis Ann Smith at 1304 28th Ave. Dr. W.

This is Daisy May, the spoiled little girl who owns Jon and Becky Hiester.   She was rescued as a puppy 7 years ago and stole our hearts.  Many of you will see her doing one of her favorite activities which is riding in the basket of Jon’s bike all around Tropic Isles.

This is Koji, their little pirate. He is a Pomeranian mix who belongs to Mike and Joan Cloutier of Bimini Dr. “Every-one who meets him, loves him.”

This is Auggie Doggie. He is our 10-year old miniature wire-haired dachshund. He feels as comfortable on the boat as he does in our motorhome and loves to be wherever we are. He lives to hunt geckos, squirrels, and anything else that dares to

enter his territory. He loves people and other dogs and loves to jump into golf carts to see what treats may be available. He rules the roost at Cindy and Bob Shaw’s house at 275 Nassau Dr.

This is Herman and Lilac Miller, the furry friends of Ann Miller of Bimini Dr.

Abby and Mar-low are the furry grandchildren of Cathy Marshall of 28th Ave. Dr. W.

This is Bolt. He is a toy Fox Terrier mix and is approximate-ly 3 years old. Jamie and Patty Meade personally rescued him on Terra Ceia Dr. on 5/19/2018 and after multiple attempts to find his original owner, they

decided to keep him. He is a fantastic dog! He loves golf cart rides, sunning on the deck, chasing boats that pass by, and best of all he rarely barks.

Stella is a 3-year old French Bulldog owned by Lisa and Mitch Barribeau of 28th Ave. W. This little Frenchie loves attention! She stalks lizards, rolls to scratch her back in driveways, and snores like an old bear.
